Staff from the KDWP will lead the activities for the day that will include fishing and a tour of the Fish Hatchery and Education Center. All fishing supplies will be provided by the KDWP. The fish hatchery grounds consist of 87 culture ponds and two concrete raceways. Fish raised at the hatchery include walleye, wiper, largemouth bass, channel catfish and bluegill. The Education Center is to discover the wildlife of Kansas with numerous displays, dioramas, and exhibits provide close encounters with the native birds, fish, mammals, and reptiles of Kansas. We will also get to see the Aquarium Room that contains twelve, 400 – 600-gallon aquariums: each displaying fish species native to Kansas. Participants must bring a sack lunch.

Our guide will take us down a trail pointing out wildlife and other interesting nature settings and we’ll explore caves and crevices. We will also visit Mushroom Rock State Park which is one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas Geography. Mushroom Rock is the smallest, but one of the most unique, state parks in Kansas. The last stop will be Farris Caves. These are manmade caves carved by Charles Griffe in the 1880 to house his family. Trees were scarce, Griffe had been a miner so carving the rock for a home was easy for him. Participants must bring a sack lunch.

This is your chance to step into the shoes of a nature center employee and experience that thrill of working with wildlife and nature up close. From preparing the diets, feeding, and providing enrichment to the 20 animal ambassadors, to maintaining displays that tell the Cheyenne Bottoms story, a lot of behind-the-scenes work goes into making the center a premier nature destination and campers will get to experience it all. Campers will participate in the Drop-in Nature Craft at the KWEC, making a felt bumble bee. After we’re done at the KWEC, we will head back to the Activity Center for an afternoon of crafts and organized activities. Participants must bring a sack lunch.
Join us and discover what it meant to be a guardian of the Santa Fe Trail at Fort Larned. Fort Larned National Historic Site staff will help you travel back in time with living history and activities in the original fort buildings. Discover the stories of the African Americans, Native Americans, Hispanics, and European Americans who all interacted at Fort Larned. On our way back from Fort Larned, we are going to stop by the Larned Splash Pad for a splashing good time. Participants must bring a sack lunch.
