GBRC MISSION STATEMENT

The Great Bend Recreation Commission is a public supported agency serving the citizens of USD#428. We are dedicated to providing quality leisure, cultural, sports, fitness and educational programs to improve your quality of life and the community.

Recreation & Parks are wondrous places to PLAY, LEARN and EXPLORE. Peaceful retreats from the pace and pressures of everyday life, they bring us family gatherings, ball games, wellness programs, afterschool programs, long walks and wildlife waiting to be discovered. To ensure our recreation programs, recreation centers, and public outdoor spaces inspire generations to come, we need your help. Support our local Recreation Commission, call 620.793.3755.

Scholarships Residents of USD#428 school district meeting certain guidelines may be eligible for scholarship assistance for their children ages 15 and younger. If approved, scholarship funds cover 50% of the program fee and applicants are asked to pay the remaining balance. Some activities are exempt from the scholarship program. Application forms must be submitted 5 business days prior to registering at GBRec Office. Recipients must attend 75% of activity. T-shirt fee not covered by scholarships.

Registrations & Cancellations We ask you to register at least (4) four business days prior to start dates to prevent cancellations due to low enrollment. Fees are due at the time of registration. We reserve the right to cancel, combine, or divide activities based upon enrollment. Information is subject to change regarding times, dates, locations and instructors. Check our website & Facebook for updates.

Refunds Refund requests must be made 24 hours prior to the scheduled starting date of the activity. Refunds not granted after that time. No pro-rated refunds. There is a $5.00 service charge on all refunds. T-shirt cost will be reduced from the activity fee if applicable. No refunds on Wellness memberships and trips. Team fee refunds will be allowed if request is made prior to the registration deadline.

Wait List If class or team has met its maximum enrollment, patrons have the option to add a name to the wait list. Should a spot open, you will be contacted. Patrons cannot be enrolled in a program and be on a waitlist for another session of the same program.

Photography/Video Great Bend Rec reserves the right to use all photographs and video of participants for promotional purposes, including print, digital, and social media promotions.

Lost & Found Items of value are kept for one (1) month and than donated to a local, non-profit agency. Water bottles are not kept.

Class Attendance Sorry, children are not allowed to attend classes with their parents. Siblings of class participants are not permitted in teaching areas.

IMAGINATION PLAYGROUND

Let your little one’s imagination go wild. This free activity is recommended for children ages 2 and older. Children must be accompanied by at least one adult. STORYWALK ADVENTURES

Join the Cottonwood District for these StoryWalk adventures. StoryWalks are books that will be displayed on white boards as children walk in the area surrounding the My BackYard Playground. SPRING BREAK LIZARD

HUNT

MY BACKYARD & VETS PARK

Are you ready to go on the GB Rec Lizard Hunt? We will be hiding 20 plastic lizards around Veterans Lake and the My BackYard Playground. No lizards will be hidden inside the Dog Park, in the water at Veterans Lake, and no lizards will be higher than 4 feet off the ground. Once you find a lizard you return it to the Activity Center between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM Monday through Friday. Each lizard will have a number on them that will determine your prize when you turn it in. The lizard hunting season will open March 14th and close at dark on March 18th. NATURE

AMAZING SPIDERS

They have eight legs and many eyes, in dark corners, they often surprise. It hunts prey both day and night, with stealth and speed, it can give a fright. SPIDERS! In this hands-on workshop, we will discover amazing facts about different types of spiders, their habitats, and their unique characteristics. We’ll explore why spiders are important to our ecosystem and how they help control insect populations. Meet real spiders up close, use the engineering design model to help a spider balloon to new locations, and create a spider craft to take home. Students will get their own spider field guides to keep.

KANSAS HUNTER EDUCATION COURSE INTERNET - ASSISTED

We will be offering a class on Saturday, April 5th. This class will meet from 8:00 am – 2:00 pm for students 11 and older at the Great Bend Police Training Facility (995 K Ave.). Students must pre-register for this course at www.safehunters.com before completing the no-cost on-line course at www.ksoutdoors.com. Students are required to bring their results from the chapter quizzes that they will take off this site. Students must print the “completion certificate” after completing the on-line course work and turn it into the instructor at the start of the Field Day class. The on-line course work could take up to 5 hours or longer to complete depending on the student’s reading comprehension skills. The class is limited to 21 participants. Students will be tested on the on-line course materials. A pre-test will be administered at the beginning of Field Day. A passing score of 22 correct answers out of 25 questions is required to proceed with the rest of the course. If a student does not pass this test, they will NOT be allowed to continue the class. BABYSITTING 101

This course gives participants the knowledge, skills, and confidence to care for toddlers through school-aged children. Topics include safety issues, preventing injuries and illness, basic childcare, and age-appropriate activities to do with children. Each student will receive a wealth of information. Students will also learn how to make a snack for kids. Participants must be 11 by the class date. Pre-registration is required by February 17th

KWEC KIDS’ DAY OUT

Join us for a day of discovery and fun. We’re going to head out to the Kansas Wetlands Education Center. It might be winter, but let’s spend the morning immersed in some of our favorite wetland plant activities! Plant a garden monster and make paper you can plant to grow a mini pollinator space. We’ll go on a nature hike looking for natural materials to make a sun catcher, and we’ll play some pollinator games! Please dress appropriately since we will be outside for some of the activities. Following the KWEC, we’ll head back to the Activity Center for a chicken strip lunch. The afternoon will be full of STEM activities and other fun. Pre-registration is required by February 17th

DILLONS NATURE CENTER KIDS’ DAY OUT

Explore nature at the Dillons Nature Center in Hutchinson, KS. During the morning, we will hit the trails and see what nature has to offer us. While we are walking, we will talk about habitats, adaptations, predator vs prey, camouflage, and anything else we may see along the way. Students will also participate in a scavenger hunt and have a chance to explore inside the visitor’s center. Please dress appropriately since we will be outside for some of the activities. All participants will be required to bring lunch and a drink in a cooler (with ice if needed). After the Dillons Nature Center we will head to The Alley for bowling and laser tag. Pre-registration is required by March 14th

We are going to head north to Hays. Our first stop will be at the Sternberg Museum of Natural History for a guided tour of the fossil gallery and live animals. The kids will receive a tour that will teach them about fossils and the cretaceous seaway that led to the types of fossils we have here. We’re also going to be learning about the live animals we have in this area with a focus on snakes. Participants will have the opportunity to hold a snake. All participants will be required to bring lunch and a drink in a cooler (with ice if needed).

Before we head back to Great Bend, we will be stopping by the Hays Rec for some time playing in the gym along with some fun organized activities with the Hays Rec staff.

Are you ready to go on the GB Rec Lizard Hunt? We will be hiding 20 plastic lizards around Veterans Lake and the My BackYard Playground. No lizards will be hidden inside the Dog Park, in the water at Veterans Lake, and no lizards will be higher than 4 feet off the ground. Once you find a lizard you return it to the Activity Center between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM Monday through Friday. Each lizard will have a number on them that will determine your prize when you turn it in. The lizard hunting season will open March 14th and close at dark on March 18th. The Rec heavily relies on parents and/or volunteers stepping up and making a difference in kids’ lives by coaching. All the training and resources are provided, we just ask for you to take the time to guide our youth towards the future! All you must do is attend a coaches meeting, pass a background check, get NYSCA certified, and be a leader during practices and games! If you would like to be a coach or would like more information, contact the Sports Department at 793-3755.

NATIONAL YOUTH SPORTS COACHES ASSOCIATION

NYSCA certification is important enough for the Rec to make the Certification Clinic mandatory for all coaches. This clinic will cover useful tips to aid you in your experience such as safety, how to organize a fun practice and tips on teaching sports techniques.

STOP THE BLEED

Seconds count when a bleeding emergency happens. Bleeding is the No. 1 cause of preventable death in any trauma injury. The American College of Surgeons Stop the Bleed program has prepared more than 2.6 million people worldwide to stop bleeding in a severely injured person. The University of Kansas Health System Great Bend Campus Emergency Department team will facilitate a free 1-hour course, in which participants can learn how to recognize life-threating bleeding and quickly implement bleeding control techniques.

This class is for any individual wanting to become a lifeguard. To enroll in this class, participants need to be 15 years old or older. The preliminary skills include a continuous Swim-Tread-Swim sequence for a total of 200 yards and 2 minutes of non-stop treading; and then a timed surface dive in 10ft. of water to get a 10lb. brick and then swimming with it for 20 yards. Provide the students’ email address for the online portion at the time of enrollment. Please bring a sack lunch and snacks with you to each class. Deadline to enroll is February 28th
