Scholarships Residents of USD#428 school district meeting certain guidelines may be Rec Office eligible for scholarship assistance for their children ages 15 and younger. If approved, 1214 Stone scholarship funds cover 50% of the program fee and applicants are asked to pay the PO BOX 353 remaining balance. Some activities are exempt from the scholarship program. Registrations & Cancellations We ask you to register at least (4) four business days prior to start dates to prevent cancellations due to low enrollment. Fees are due at the time of registration. We reserve the right to cancel, combine, or divide activities based upon enrollment. Information is subject to change regarding times, dates, locations and instructors. Check our website & Facebook for updates. Refunds Refund requests must be made 24 hours prior to the scheduled starting date of the activity. Refunds not granted after that time. No pro-rated refunds. There is a $5.00 service charge on all refunds. T-shirt cost will be reduced from the activity fee if applicable. No refunds on Wellness memberships and trips. Team fees refunds will be allowed if request is made prior to the registration deadline. Wait List If class or team has met its maximum enrollment, patrons have the option to add a name to the wait list. Should a spot open, you will be contacted. Patrons cannot be enrolled in a program and be on a waitlist for another session of the same program. Photography/Video Great Bend Rec reserves the right to use all photographs and video of participants for promotional purposes, including print, digital, and social media promotions. Lost & Found Items of value are kept for one (1) month and than donated to a local, non-profit agency. Water bottles are not kept. Class Attendance Sorry, children are not allowed to attend classes with their parents. Siblings of class participants are not permitted in teaching areas. SPRING BREAK LIZARD HUNT

Are you ready to get outside and go on the GB Rec Lizard Hunt? We will be hiding a total of 20 plastic lizards around Veterans Lake and the My BackYard Playground. No lizards will be hidden inside the Dog Park or in the water at Veterans Lake. Once you find a lizard you will return it to the Great Bend Rec Activity Center between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm Monday through Friday to claim your prize. The Lizard hunting season will open Friday, March 8th, and close on Wednesday, March 13th. The deadline to submit lizards is 5:00 pm on Friday, March 15th. Look for more information on the Great Bend Rec Facebook page leading up to Spring Break and for possible hints and the number of lizards turned in. We encourage you to post photos in the comment section of you finding a lizard in its hiding spot.

Following lunch, we’ll head off to the KWEC, where we will harness the power of the sun to create art using items found on a nature hike and we’ll use solar panels for a science experiment. Join us at the Activity Center for a day of discovery and fun. We’re going to head out to Barton Community College. At the college we’re going to be learning how the sun provides energy for all of life on earth. We will even turn a pizza box into a solar oven to make yummy treats for ourselves. Following lunch, we’ll head off to the KWEC, where we will harness the power of the sun to create art using items found on a nature hike and we’ll use solar panels for a science experiment. PHOTOGRAPHY BASICS & BEYOND

This course will provide an introduction to elements of photography that are operational in every image make, regardless of the type of camera used. It is designed to take those who are interested in improving their photography, and who also have DSLR or Mirrorless cameras capable of changes being made in shutter speed, aperture, ISO, focus, and more, beyond just using the Automatic settings and into a much more thorough understanding of those factors, as well as control of them. In addition, concepts such as depth of field and the factors involved, elements of composition, modes such an aperture priority, shutter priority, “B” manual mode, live view, types of light, and other factors involved in photography, will be discussed. DROP SPINDLE SPINNING

March 22, 2024, is World Water Day. Mandy Kern with the Kansas Wetlands Education Center will give an update on the water conditions of Cheyenne Bottoms. She will also introduce a collaboration project between the KWEC, City of Hays Water Department, and K-State Research and Extension. WALK KANSAS

The 2024 Walk Kansas dates have been set for March 24th through May 18th. Teams of six form with a goal to exercise enough minutes collectively to walk across, Kansas. Individuals can also sign up without being part of a team. There is also encouragement from the website, weekly newsletters, and local Extension Staff to make healthier throughout the 8-week program. Deadline for Walk KS is March 20th. The cost to participate is $10.00.

HEALTHY WALKING WITH FRIENDS

Join your friends for this free drop-in walking program. Walking is a great way to exercise and enjoy Veterans Lake. Participants will meet at the Fit Trail Exercise equipment on the north side of the lake. This will be a 10-week program that will meet every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The first walk is scheduled for March 25th, and the last walk is scheduled for May 31st. If the weather is questionable, the indoor walking track at the Great Bend Rec will be available for walking. PAWESOME EASTER EGG HUNT MARCH 23rd - 1:00 PM VETERAN’S MEMORIAL PARK Join us for a fantastic Easter Egg Hunt for your four-legged canine family members! Easter eggs will have pet-friendly treats inside of them, and others will have vouchers for larger prizes! Field will be divided into 2-sections, Small Dog Hunt and Large Dog Hunt.
