Gracing our front page this month is nine year old Nandi Bushell. Not many drummers of her age get to jam with Lenny Kravitz at Wembly but Nandi has! Hayley Goldsmith caught up with this busy young lady at a Webby’s junior jam at The County of Suffolk on Sunday morning. You can read her interview on page 8. StephenFoz Foz has been on the radio in Suffolk for well over 40 years. His on air activities began at Hospital Radio Ipswich in 1977. During his five year spell there he began working at Radio Orwell and when Saxon Radio came on air in 1982 Foz secured a full time job working for both stations. The BBC came calling in 1990 and he’s been at BBC Radio Suffolk ever since.

It’s always good to hear a British-made blues album that stands up against recordings made on the other side of the pond. That in itself is not unusual. After all, the Brits have been making great blues albums since the early 1960s when the UK helped resurrect the careers of several American greats who at that time weren’t exactly being embraced by their homeland. Nevertheless, when a modern day release matches what our American friends are putting out I still like to shout about it. I reckon Essex-based bluesman Martin McNeill would have been in short trousers during the first British blues boom but well over a half a century later he is helping keep the genre alive and in the process breathing new life into it. Since retiring from the newspaper business a few years back Martin has concentrated on honing his craft as a musician, so much so that he is now regarded as one of this country’s very best bottleneck guitarists. Martin and I share similar tastes in music which is why I have been drawn to his various takes on the blues. He is passionate about the genre and that comes across in his playing. His is no poor imitation of what came out of the Mississippi Delta in the first half of last century. Quite the reverse in fact. He stamps his own authority on the country blues of the past and some more recent closer-to-the-mainstream material from the likes of Don Covay, Fleetwood Mac, Nick Lowe and Ry Cooder. Cat Squirrel is the title of Martin’s latest album. It’s his third and

was recorded at Rooks Yard in Southminster, a new studio run by Automatic Slim’s Tim Aves and his good buddy Pete Crisp. I must congratulate Tim and Pete on a very classy production. Martin’s beautiful guitar work is very much to the fore of course but I must also flag out some fine harmonica work and, of course, his warm vocal style. There are no fillers on this 9 track release. If I had to pick a favourite it would have to be a coin toss between I Think It’s Gonna Work Out Fine and Chain Of Fools. Martin is very much in solo mode on this album but is often out and about with various musicians in different formats. Martin’s versatility has helped him become one of this region’s busiest performers.

Check out www.martinmcneill.co.uk to find out when he’s next playing near you. Do go and see him and don’t leave without buying a copy of Cat Squirrel – you’d be nuts not to! While I’m on the subject of Rooks Yard I’d also recommend another recent release recorded there. Costa Rican bluesman Jose Ramirez laid down three of his songs there when he toured Britain earlier this year. He was backed by bassist Rob ‘Tank’ Barry, drummer Paul Lester and harmonica man Giles King so it’s fair to say he was in very safe hands. He’s called the EP The UK Sessions and it’s a release he should be very proud of. Tim and Pete spent 18 months building their studio and it’s already producing quality recordings on a regular basis. Suffolk group Goofa Dust, Essex outfit Richard Townend the Mighty Bosscats, American guitarist Mark Riley and Trev Turley’s Mojo Preachers are among recent clients while Tim tells me Automatic Slim will also be recording there in the very near future. Go to www.rooksyard.co.uk to discover more about this welcome addition to East Anglia’s recording scene.

Nandi Bushell Drummer

We sent Hayley Goldsmith along to the Junior Jam run by Webby at The County of Suffolk where she met up with Nandi and her parents, John and Lungi. If you’ve not heard of Nandi Bushell before, you will be talking about her very soon. She’s a drummer, she’s adorable and she is just 9 years old. Since being in the John Lewis advert her popularity is rocketing to the point where a clip of Nandi jamming with Lenny Kravitz is on its way to being viral with nearly 700,000 views, and it’s been reported by the BBC, ITV, radio stations and music websites across America. She’s been given a Ludwig drum kit and several other items and is already an influencer. HG: Let’s begin with how did it all start, as we all want to know? NB: I did a maths test, I passed and Daddy said I can have what I wanted. I say a toy drum kit in Toys R Us, that’s what I wanted. Daddy got his guitar out and he taught me a little, I then had a teacher and then I got better than Daddy! John: I can show you the clip… At which point John got his phone out and showed me Nandi on the toy drum kit when she was 5 years old with John on the guitar. It was more than cute.

making, you need to get back to that piano! John: We’re not professional in any way! HG: Nandi, what is it about drumming that you like? NB: I like the sound of it. I really like the sound when I do loud crashes. I don’t know how to explain it, I just like it. I like the beat and it sounds really cool. HG: What do your friends at school think? NB: They didn’t really get into it. But now I have a friend in year 2 and she’s said she’s having drumming lessons. HG: Fantastic…you could be inspiring a nation. John: She was actually invited into the school assembly to play the drums in front of everyone and I was fortunate enough to see it. The whole school went crazy. HG: You’ve been playing for 4 years already, how often do you practice? NB: Every day after school for an hour, well sometimes it’s an hour, sometimes half an hour or an hour and 25 minutes. HG: Do you have to be asked to practice? NB: If I do my school work in the morning then I can practice after school, but I put myself on the drums.

HG: John, you play the guitar then?

John: We don’t have to tell her to practice.

John: Yeah, but I’ve not had any lessons or anything. I picked it up at university. I was in a band at uni but I was singing. These days I don’t play in front of people, I don’t like it.

HG: Have you started making up tracks?

HG: There is music in the family? Lungi – what do you play? Lungi: Nothing, but I did learn the piano when I was growing up. HG: No way? This is a family band in the

John: Well, we jam. We’ve not recorded anything. Nandi will be drumming and I’ll pick up the guitar and we’ll just play. That’s how it all started on Instagram, I would record us jamming together and I noticed that I was getting a lot of likes and people were commenting on it. So I thought I’d create her own Insta account so I could track her progress and it’s kinda gone crazy.

HG: Everyone loves young talent and it’s encouraging to see. Nandi, what’s your favourite music to play? NB: I like playing ‘The Pretender’ by Foo Fighters and I like singing and playing ‘Come Down’ Anderson Paak HG: Let’s talk about the recent thing with Lenny Kravitz, what was that like? NB: Yeah, cool. I also went to the On Black Heath Festival. I met Questlove and he gave me some drum sticks and he signed my drum sticks. HG: What other musician would you want to play with? NB: Foo Fighters HG: Obviously, you’re not in a band right now, but do you have dreams to be in a band and tour the world? NB: Yeah! HG: By the time you’re ten? NB: Maybe 12!

HG: You’ve been in the John Lewis advert, anything else? NB: I’ve been on Newsround HG: Did you enjoy that? And would you like to do more? NB: Yes. I would like to do more. When we come back off holiday Newsround are coming to our house. John: They are going to do some filming for a documentary. HG: How do you feel about all the attention? NB: I like it a little bit but not too much. HG: How does it make you feel when learning something difficult? NB: Makes me feel… mmm… I don’t feel under pressure as Daddy says once you master it you’re going to love it. When I master it, I get a lot of views. HG: What other hobbies outside of music do you love?

HG: What’s your favourite subject at school?

NB: Running, long running, playing Minecraft – I play in a realm.

NB: PE, Maths & English

HG: Tell us what your average day is like?

HG: Good subjects, John, does she have her own style yet?

NB: Wake up, put school uniform on, breakfast, Kumon. Tuesdays is spelling and Kumon and breakfast. Afterschool is guitar practice and drum practice. Wednesday is guitar lessons with my brother, with Tom McCarthy. Saturday I have a drum lesson for one hour…

John: Yeah, I think so. She’s learning from lots and lots of different types of drummers and guitarists and she’s putting it all together in her own way for sure. Because she’s constantly learning her style is constantly evolving. HG: Great, still enjoying learning and she obviously has good parents to keep her grounded. Are there any brothers or sisters? NB: I have a little brother called Thomas HG: wow – you really could have a family band! John: They do play together. Thomas has just started to play the guitar, but they do have a jam. HG: Do you fancy playing another instrument? NB: I am learning the guitar. HG: I’ve seen you at the Adult Jam night, as well as this Junior Jam that Webby holds, any preferences to which one you prefer? NB: I like playing at both.

HG: Do you get nervous? NB: No.

The Junior Jam is getting into full flow now and we sit back to watch the young guys do their thing. Nandi gets up for the drums, which is incredible to watch as she can barely reach the peddles. You can tell she’s enjoying it. Later in the jam she’s up there on the guitar doing a pretty good job. Even young Thomas gets on the act too! I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Nandi and her family a little bit more. They are devoted and lovely people and I respected the fact they both let Nandi talk and be herself during the quick interview. @nandi_bushell www.facebook.com/NandiBushell

The NMG Awards 2019 For me there is only one type of music: good music. My sister-in-law also believes that there is only one type of music: country & western! As you can gather, thanksgiving dinners around her house can lead to heated discussions. As human beings we are predisposed to categorise everything. Neat little boxes in an organised, neat world. Spoiler alert – life isn’t like that! But musical genres help us find what we like to listen to, because, unlike me, music fans are tribal creatures. I have merrily listened to folk that morphed into pop, jazz that could be blues and rock that had anthemic, orchestral qualities. I pay scant heed to ‘types’ of music. All that changed this month with the announcement that Grapevine is to sponsor the “Indie” category at the annual NMG awards to be held at The Apex in Bury St Edmunds on 6th September. Suddenly I needed to take heed of

Hollowstar

‘Indie’ the one genre I have struggled with, well, that and ‘alternative’ – I mean, alternative to what? If you take the dictionary definition (not Wikipedia!) of ‘indie’ music, it is defined as “not belonging or affiliated to a major record company”. Off I go for a chat with my good friend Mr Google who tells me that Arctic Monkeys are the top ranked Indie band – forgive me, I would have said rock band. Ah but despite being signed to Domino that doesn’t count because its not one of the ‘majors’, of which there are but four or five: Warner, EMI, Sony etc. Mumford & Son, The Cure and R.E.M. all describe themselves as Indie. Ah but there is ‘Indie Rock’, ‘Indie Folk’ and lord help me, ‘Indie/Alternative’ – my head hurts! Now would be a good time to listen to all sixteen nominees in the NMG Indie category and see if that clears things up for me. {press pause}.

I’m back. But unfortunately, as I am writing this before the awards night, it would be unfair of me to express any favouritism which might influence the judges so let’s keep it generic. After a marathon session of video clips with volume at eleven, what have I learned? First up, there is an amazing amount of talent out there – this category is perfect for the likes of me who doesn’t recognise the existence of musical borders. Perfect for Grapevine too who also like just one type of music: LIVE music! The other thing I have noticed is, on this evidence, that Indie seems to be a guy-thing! I only noticed one band that included a female, is this a fair representation of the genre? Speaking of genre – I just love the way bands describe their music: Indie/Alt, Indie/Electronic, Indie/Pop – my second most favourite: Emo Indie! But topping the bill was the band who described their genre as: music – now that I understand! Back in the 80’s (before most of the NMG Indie category artists were born I suspect) Indie was all about independent charts but it also had to do with attitude and spirit. Pauline Black, lead singer of The Selecter summed up 80s Indie perfectly in an interview in The Guardian: “It was being in charge of your art: you decided what you wanted to put out, how you wanted to put it out, who you wanted to produce it.” Hats off then to the NMG awards for recognising the Indie spirit. There are sixteen performers nominated in the Indie category. Some names leaped out at me, others are new to me. Thankfully I’m not on the judging panel because its going to be a close call.

Tony Bell

The Art of Pretending GLOVE COMPARTMENT Anthony Shiels is the keyboard player with The Candle Thieves. This is his solo project and I was hooked from the first track. A wonderful collection of piano centric pop songs with hints of jazz and rock. This music could fill an auditorium or be used as background music to a romantic dinner for two.

band playing! Punk funk with added brass would be a wonderful heading for this Norfolk band’s music. They themselves describe their sound as a mix of punk, folk, rockabilly, dub, jazz, funk and ska! Is there anything they don’t do? Regardless of that, what they do they do well. Getting lots of air plays by BBC Introducing in both Norfolk & Suffolk. If the band name sounds a tad aggressive might I refer you to the scrawl on Woodie Guthrie’s guitar in the 60’s.

Bouquet MAUVE

Joyland THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS Boy did I take a wrong turning on the information superhighway when searching for videos of this

‘Remember’ is the latest single and opening track on ‘Bouquet’ the most recent EP offering from this Cambridge/London based band. A mere three tracks but enough to leave you wanting more. Of the three my favourite is ‘Shoreline’ a

fast paced number with a rhythm that ebbs and flows wonderfully. (NMG nominees: Rock)

Purple Pyramid LO-GRADE LAWRENCE Hands up who likes ambient electronic music! You might notice that I haven’t raised my hand... yet. This three track EP by Cambridge based LoGrade Lawrence was not my first choice this month but it is growing on me... those ethereal sounds and mystic beats. I dare you to play ‘Floating in the Filth’ and not become immersed in these aural landscapes. I don’t know if there are any intentions to release this EP on vinyl, I suspect not, but I love the artwork on the cover. It is so intune with what you hear, back in the day that would be hanging on my wall framed!

Salute THE GRENADIERS This is Grenadiers UK, not to be confused with an Aussie band who sound nothing like their UK namesakes. This is their most recent release continuing their sixtiesesque sound which blends Beatles with Small Faces with a sprinkling of punk. You think you know all the songs but they are all originals of which ‘Pale White Lily’ is my favourite, but its a close call.

enough to have had a copy of the CD dropped into the office. The trio fronted by Scruff will be well known to music fans in this region but this sound is somewhat different from the punkier sound of Lovejunk. This is rockier with strong overtones of beach rock - you know, what the Beach Boys would have played if they really let rip! The slow ‘Some Year’ took me by surprise but pleasantly so. Superhands will be launched at St Peter’s by The Waterfront, Ipswich and should be a gig well worth going to.

duo they create a sound above and beyond what a mandolin, guitar and kick drum should be able to create on their own. Aaron’s effortless guitar work is the perfect backdrop for Grace’s powerful, sultry voice and fiddle playing. This is a band where the whole is far greater than the sum of the parts. Oh dear, I may be turning into a WRM groupie! Music To Your Ears REVIEWS To be in with a chance of having your latest release reviewed by Grapevine Magazine here is what we need: • A link to your EP or LP - we prefer a body of work rather than singles. • A short bio - tell us about yourself.

The Uprising EP WHEN RIVERS MEET

Superhands SCRUFF MYERS This is one you will have to wait for until the end of September, the 28th being its official release date. But you can find the single ‘Other Guy’ on Spotify for a flavour of what is to come. We’ve been lucky

This is a duo I’ve wanted to see play for a long time. That chance came my way last month and I was not disappointed. Grace and Aaron produced one of the best live blues sounds I have heard recently. ‘Kill For Your Love’ is my favourite of the four offerings on this EP for no other reason than in a festival field it stopped me in my tracks and I went “Wow”. For a

• A release date - if it’s not out there already. • Cover artwork - so we can print that. • Where you are from - we cover music in Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk, its nice to know where we can find you. Blink and you’ll have missed it… with summer sizzling out, and autumn falling in, it’s time to get excited about this year’s richly diverse autumn theatre season. Cambridge is fortunate enough to have several great performance spaces. One being the Arts Theatre, who regularly host a great mix of plays and musicals of dramas, comedies and beyond. If you act fast, you might be able to grab yourself one of 2019’s hottest tickets to see Samantha Womack star in the Girl on the Train (23-28 Sept) as it comes in direct from a Summer stint in the West End. Expect to be gripping onto the edge of your seat until the last minute.

The drama continues at the Arts Theatre with another screen to stage adaptation, The Lovely Bones (4-9 Nov) – which I was fortunate enough to see in the spring and highly recommend. Another show I’ve already seen during its London premiere two years ago and can recommend is Prism (18-23 Nov). Starring Robert Lindsay, it’s a fascinating look at the true-story of Jack Cardiff, the man who made Hollywood’s greatest divas beautiful. However, if it’s laughter you’re after, What’s In A Name? (28 Oct-2 Nov) is based on the

award-winning French film Le Prénom, and is out on its first ever UK tour. Audiences are invited to take a seat for a riotously funny evening that questions whether a person’s name truly reflects who they are. If you like to keep your shows a little more leftfield – there are plenty of great options across the region. Keeping it in Cambridge, the ADC theatre and Corpus Playroom have some brilliantly quirky shows. There’s too much to highlight it all, but two Cambridge University Musical Theatre Society shows fresh from Edinburgh Fringe runs include original comedy-musical, Unexpected item in the Bagging Area (16-19 Oct) and original relevant, moving, and life-affirming musical, Rust (13-16 Nov). Cambridge Junction is also great for finding the unique, and one of many interesting shows is Jamie Wood: O No! (6 Oct), a show about reckless optimism, avant-garde art and what we might yet have to learn from the hippies.

But the unique doesn’t only live in Cambridge – over on the coast at Southend, a fringe favourite Sh*t Faced Shakespeare bring their new show.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream (27 Oct) to the Palace Theatre – I think laughs are guaranteed. Also at the Palace Theatre and inspired by Agatha Christie, Hitchcock and film noir; you are invited on a hilarious but murderous trip to a classic English Riviera retreat with Crimes On The Coast (31 Oct-2 Nov).

Remember that little 90s sitcom called FRIENDS? If you’re a fan, you can keep the laughs rolling as the Civic Theatre, Chelmsford are giving you a chance to live out all of your inner fan needs with a parody take in Friendsical The Musical (14-19 Oct). Classics reinvented seems to be the case at the Norwich Playhouse – as The Pantaloons production of Othello (1-2 Nov) is sure to have a little more mischief than usual. Ballo Arthur Pita presents The Little Match Girl (27-30 Nov), based on the Hans Christian Andersen story, this touching tale of an impoverished young street girl’s hopes and dreams is beautifully told through dance, song and original music performed live on stage. With this vast eclectic mix of shows on offer in our region – it’s difficult to know where to be! Which shows will you be seeing this Autumn? As always, we’d love to know so share the shows you’re excited about with GrapevineLIVE on Facebook. Tell us about your shows too via pressrelease@grapevinelive.co.uk. We’d love to know about the shows you’re putting on!
