StephenFoz Foz has been on the radio in Suffolk for well over 40 years. His on air activities began at Hospital Radio Ipswich in 1977. During his five year spell there he began working at Radio Orwell and when Saxon Radio came on air in 1982 Foz secured a full time job working for both stations. The BBC came calling in 1990 and he’s been at BBC Radio Suffolk ever since.

The Suffolk music scene is reeling from the news that one of its most popular figures – Tom Williams – has died at the age of 29. Tom was drummer with the hugely popular blues-rock trio Hot Tramp. He passed away in his sleep. It’s believed he had an epileptic fit. I heard about his death while I was abroad on holiday and the news certainly knocked me for six, as it did everybody back  home in Suffolk. A more likeable chap would be impossible to find, especially in the music business which has more than its fair share of people who have high opinions of themselves and their ability. Tom was a grounded young man who always made a point of saying hello to me whenever he saw me. That was usually at

a Hot Tramp gig but from time to time I did bump into him in town and at other gigs and he was always very sociable. Anyone who has witnessed Hot Tramp on stage will know just what a key component Tom was to their explosive sound. His rock solid style behind the kit gave singer/bassist Joshua Carr and guitarist Lewis Grey the perfect platform from which to work their magic. A few years ago a good friend of mine who lives in Australia, Richard Fugelsang, was back in Ipswich and saw Hot Tramp opening for Dr Feelgood at Venue 77. He was blown away by their powerful set, commenting to me how much they reminded him of early Led Zeppelin. That was quite a compliment and it was one I

wholeheartedly agreed with. Tom’s drumming was nowhere near as busy as that of John Bonham but he certainly hit the skins very hard and knew the importance of fleshing out the overall sound when necessary. First and foremost on stage and in the studio Tom laid down the rhythm and that should be the top priority for every drummer. Sadly that isn’t always the case but don’t get me started on that! It was a privilege to have known and worked with Tom. He graced every stage he performed on and in a relatively short space of time he made a big impact on gig-goers and his fellow musicians. All of us here at Grapevine extend our deepest sympathies to his family and many friends. This is not the time to speculate on the future of Hot Tramp but Josh and Lewis know their close friend is irreplaceable. Hopefully Josh and Lewis will continue to make music but for both of them life will never be quite the same again.

Hayley Clapperton

Read the full interview online at GrapevineLIVE.co.uk/interviews Spread around East Anglia, musical brother and sister, Lizzy and Reubes, along with guitarist Dan are Light Skies Darken. They appeared on the cover of Grapevine in December 2018 and Hayley catches up with them to see how it’s progressing. How long have Lizzy & Reubes been playing music together? What made you take the leap to create a band and start gigging? Reubes: I think we can both safely say we’ve been playing music for as long as we can remember or at least as long as we have argued (to drown each other out haha). Have you always had the same tastes in music growing up? Reubes: We were also heavily exposed to our parents CD collection, which featured a lot of rock and prog stuff, however, me and Lizzy still did have some different preferences too as she has always liked northern soul and rat pack stuff while I really found a love for Fusion and Jazz. Dan: I grew up listening to The Darkness, AC/DC and Van Halen. Any CD’s I could find laying around with good guitar playing on it. Who are your influences? Lizzy: Pink Floyd, Glenn Hughes, Deep Purple Reubes: I’d say that the ‘Light Skies Darken’ sound is an amalgamation of our individual influences. I’ve always been obsessed with the big 60s/ 70s rock giants like Zeppelin,

The Who, Rainbow and Deep Purple. Dan has always been a pop punk and metal man although is big into his Dream theatre and Lizzy loves rock but also anything from Northern Soul to Rat Pack. What types of music do you enjoy listening to when you are hanging out? Lizzy: On the way to gigs, or band outings we usually like to have something loud on to get us in the mood and ready to rock. Anything from Kansas to Black Country or Toto (not the commercial stuff haha). When you become famous, what will your rider be? Lizzy: Incense sticks, Persian carpets… a Volkswagon Beetle to chill in before the show Reubes: I like the hot pastries from the Tesco Deli Counter Dan: Galaxy chocolate, lots of Galaxy chocolate Anything unusual happened at a gig? Dan: The ex drummer from one of my favourite bands (Dragonforce) watched one of the shows on the tour we did last year which was amazing! You also play in other bands and have other musical projects/commitments, how do you juggle them? Reubes: We are quite lucky to be busy but it does mean a lot of phone calls, calendars and scheduling. Sometimes we are able to coordinate things so several of the bands we play in are at the same event/ festival (both The Pure Floyd Show and Light Skies Darken are at Cambridge Rock Festival this year).

Find us on Facebook: GrapevineLIVE

You appeared on the Grapevine Cover in December 2018, how has the band and the music developed/grown since then? Reubes: We are so appreciative to have the support of the Grapevine so early on and have been working really hard to try and keep making progress. Our first EP has had some amazing support from BBC Introducing and we’ve had tracks played on Hard Rock Hell, Team Rock and a variety of local stations. Lizzy: Since then we have had some really good gigs (opening for Nadine Coyle at Festival Too and Praying Mantis at the Brickmakers). We also had a short interview on BBC Look East to promote the opening night of our first tour (St Ives Corn Exchange). Reubes: I think musically we have really developed and grown. When writing the new originals we didn’t restrict ourselves to trying to write a number of ‘prog’ tracks and just worked with the songs that sounded the most natural and authentic. We are still very much ‘prog’ but there are some elements that could be considered almost POP/ metal and funk on the new record! Tell me about how your band name came about? Lizzy: I think Light Skies Darken was the one we all had the gut feeling to pick. We were on the way to West Suffolk Hospital one night and noticed the amazing colour of the sky and were shocked how quickly it had gone from being a warm and bright autumn day to a cold, dark night and ‘Light Skies Darken’ simply summed it up. What artist/group would you like to support? Reubes: We’ve been lucky enough to open for Praying Mantis and it would be amazing to support some of the other bands we have grown up listening to such as Uriah Heep and Dream Theatre. Which famous musicians do you admire? Why? Reubes: I really admire some of the elder

APRIL 2020

musicians on the circuit such as Sir Tom and Tony Bennett as they still go out and put on great shows with the same amount of enthusiasm and passion as they ever have! Lizzy: I’m a big fan of Frank Sinatra and Brad Paisley. I have to say though that I love the musicians in Pink Floyd as i never get bored of their music. What do you enjoy most about being a musician? Reubes: I love the connection you can generate during a live show between the band and the audience. What do you hate most? Dan: I don’t like changing strings, I really hate changing strings. What’s your biggest vice? Lizzy: Milk, I love milkshakes. Light Skies Darken had a summer tour in 2019, how did you find touring together? What’s next for you in 2020? Reubes: It was such a hilarious experience and an amazing learning curve for the three of us. We had the opportunity to play some great events and we learnt a lot about crafting and refining a good live show and it was brilliant to meet so many other musicians and people in the industry. We are now in the process of tracking our debut album which will hopefully be out in 2020 and have gig dates listed on our social media pages. Tony talks to...

Clare Teal “Holidays and time off are overrated!”

TB: Do you all travel separately or on board one big bus?

Singer and BBC Radio presenter Clare Teal is making her debut at Felixstowe’s Spa Pavilion on April 18th. I had to start with the question that Ray and his team at the Spa were curious to know the answer to...

CT: Oh, I wish we were all driving about in a 1940’s tour bus, but no. We are all from different parts of the world, so it seldom happens that we travel together.

TB: Will you be going for a dip in the North Sea after soundcheck?

TB: You have begun to tease us with the idea of a new album in 2020. Can you talk about that yet?

CT: (Laughs)...eh.. no. TB: You are bringing your Big Mini Big Band to the Spa. What is a Big Mini Big Band please? CT: It was the Ella Fitzgerald thing that created this hybrid. We have a Mini Big Band which was about seven pieces, so it really was, for a big band, quite tiny! I always felt that is was a little bit angular. The difficulty in touring with big bands is that it is so expensive, sometimes you just can’t afford to do it. So, we tried to find a sweet spot. When we did the Ella centenary stuff, we added two extra horns, a trumpet and a saxophone, and that made the world of difference. I kinda wanted it to be part big band but I also wanted it to be a bit like Jazz at the Philharmonic where you have a small group of people who are very, very good at what they do, so that the soloists could have spotlights and take flight as well. It works quite well for that; you have the intimacy, but you also have the detailed arrangements too. And you get to hear what a big band sort of sounds like!

CT: Yes, I can! There will be two. The last time we spoke we had released our orchestral album which we made with the Halle Orchestra and a big band - ninetyseven musicians on that session! It has taken a while to get back in the studio because we have just been very busy. Until that point, I had been making one or two records a year. We had some time in January, so we went into the studio, and yes, two albums are going to be coming out at the same time. One will be the more contemporary end of what we’ve been doing. Then the other is a swing record, something I’ve always wanted to make. I can sometimes find recording quite stressful. The orchestral one wasn’t because it was done live, and that’s the way I like to make them. I like the process to be like a gig which is very much how we’ve approached this project, and I’m really excited about it. TB: People who have never been in a recording studio may not realise that you may not be in the same room as the other musicians.

Find us on Facebook: GrapevineLIVE

CT: And often you can be doing vocals on a completely different day and I hate that. All the records I love were made in situ and I am so thrilled that we have done that. I want our recordings to be that vocal, at that moment, with that band. That is what we’ve been doing, it is always a risk. The closer you are to the band, there is a risk that your voice could bleed onto something and if you are having a bad day, or something goes wrong, that mistake will be there forever. We found a studio with a beautiful piano and some fantastic microphones and a lovely team and we got busy and I am so thrilled with what we have managed to achieve. I would say 99.5% of the vocals are as they were, and I am thrilled to bits with that. TB: Do you have a release date yet? CT: (pause) No! That is the beauty of being on your own label! It just happens in amongst everything else when we get a chance. (at this point we are interrupted by an enthusiastic dog barking in the background) CT: That’s Alan, he’s been on every radio station across the country, he just likes to make his voice heard TB: I was delighted to hear you feature James Taylor’s new album ‘American Standard’ on your radio show last week. CT: I love his treatment of the songs. Sometimes artists who are famous in other genres like in rock or pop, sometimes they will come across and say “Oh I’ll just make a jazz record” and they are not very good and you go ‘Oh why has he done that?’. James Taylor is one of my favourite singers so when I heard he was doing that I was like ‘Oh no, please don’t...’ But you know what, I haven’t stopped listening to it, I absolutely love it. John Pizzarelli is one of the producers - of course his father is Bucky Pizzarelli who toured with Benny Goodman, so he is in good hands. But I just love the treatments of the songs, I love the choice of material, I think he sounds fantastic - what a wonderful record to release.

APRIL 2020

13

TB: On your radio show you have a piece called “Without that... you wouldn’t have this”. What would we need to have in order to have Clare Teal the singer? CT: That’s a good question. So my chain... I would say the most obvious one would be Ella Fitzgerald. There are many, you could say Billie Holiday as well, but I would say that Ella is an absolute key influence. TB: Your touring schedule is crazy, it is busier than most musicians I know, and you find time to slip in a radio show at the weekend - which is live. CT: Yes, we do seventy gigs and fifty-two radio shows, I’m allowed to have four prerecords and that is normally because I am working in a theatre somewhere. So, when you asked: when’s the record coming out, you can probably understand why I say when we can. TB: Grapevine & I have been working a lot with young upcoming bands of late. What would be your top tip for staying sane on the road? CT: Its looking after yourself. I heard this thing somewhere, I can’t remember who said it, but it was a musician: we spend the first half of our lives trying to kill ourselves, and the second half trying to live forever! You come to appreciate that if you eat really good food, if you don’t go out drinking every night, then you won’t get bugs. It is just looking after yourself. I feel that if anyone is paying to come and see you, they deserve to see the best you can be on that day. TB: But do you ever get time off? CT: I have Monday’s off! It’s great, you go YAY! Its Monday! You ring all your friends and say do you want to go out - and they all say no, its Monday! But to be honest, this is a pretty enjoyable job. Muddy & I, Muddy is my better half, we have just got back from a long driving trip this weekend. We worked out that she had done twentyfive hours of actual driving. There is a lot of sitting in the car getting to places, we travel a lot with pianist Jason Rebello, so you tend to be laughing a lot and enjoying each other’s company. Holidays and time off are clearly overrated!

MAY 1-4 Beowulf Festival r Woodbridge r Suffollk beowulffestival.co.uk

As we were putting the final touches to our 2020 Music and Arts Festival Guide, news began to reach us of postponements and cancellations due to the current situation with Coronavirus. Some event organisers are taking it upon themselves to act, others are unable to get the necessary insurance cover to run their events. We had originally brought our festival guide forward to our April issue because of the large number of events being planned for the weekend of the VE Day anniversary in May. In the light of the current uncertainty we feel it right that we postpone the early publication of our full festival guide until the situation regarding summer events and outdoor gatherings becomes clearer. At the time of going to press these are the festivals happening in April & May that we know of. If you are planning on attending any of these events our advice is to check directly with the event organisers first. Once we have more information we plan to run the festival guide in the May issue.

Milligan who also wears the producer’s hat on an album recorder at The Sink and at The Loft in Essex. This is also the band’s first recording with percussionist James Bacon. My current ear worm from the album is ‘Lazy Day’, as the title suggests it evokes carefree lazy summer days – in complete contrast to ‘Red Hot and Raunchy’ which is straight of The Blues Brothers… I can just see Jamie and Nick in suits and dark glasses! This is another album to feature a cello. Cellos are the thing to have in 2020, no band should be without one. This time it is Naomi Poole featuring on ‘If I Met My Hero’. The track ‘Held In Your Glow’ has got

Album of the Month to be a Bond movie theme contender. Do What You Love JAMIE WILLIAMS & THE ROOTS COLLECTIVE Here we have a band I first saw at our local blues festival. The excellent StowBlues on the banks of the Gipping Delta (if you’ll excuse the poetic licence) has been responsible for introducing me to many a good band. This is the Collective’s sixth album and will be on general release from 22nd May this year on just about any platform you care to mention. Good solid rhythm mixed with unmistakable harp sounds of Nick Garner and guitar work of Dave

It is moody and mysterious and unlike any of the other tracks on this album.

‘Heartbreakers of the First Degree’ starts all funky and psychedelic like something from a 60s Grateful Dead set and includes a rare piece of Essex throat warbling from Jamie at the beginning! There are songs about the passing of time, politics, sex, life on the road, relaxing in the sun, true love and tributes to the band’s heroes and friends they have lost along the way – pretty much a reflection on life. It is obvious that the band had fun recording this, there are guest appearances by a host of friends and fellow musicians.

Find us on Facebook: GrapevineLIVE This is yet another excellent recording out of The Recording Booth in Suffolk where producer David Booth not only produces and records albums but frequently ends up playing too. On this he is credited with playing ‘Curtain Pole Off-Cuts’. One can only assume he misplaced his drum sticks again!

APRIL 2020 21 of musicians eager to play live and believe it or not they are working on a second album which, if all goes to plan will be launched in June of 2020.

Footprints in the Butter ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM In his fiftieth year Carl Scott decided it was about time to release an album which he did. This was followed up quickly by the difficult second album and here we are now with the much trickier third one. Mr. Scott and his herd of pachyderms are prolific songwriters it seems. Carl, Fern & Sam make up Elephant in the Room, the band no one is talking about. Putting aside the puns and self-deprecation with which Carl approaches his music, this makes for good listening. In places I can hear hints of early Jethro Tull. Carl’s lyrics are thought provoking and dark in places: “Broken” has everything turning strange in a world where everything is broken to the core. Whilst on “Rise” he reflects on the rise of the robots – yes, you and me, engrossed in our cell phone – yep, mobiles killed the video star! The guitar work is unmistakable Scott but given depth, not least, by Fern’s vocals and harmonies which are up front and centre or subtle as the songs require. Not to be left out of the trio Sam’s deep baritone voice can be heard. The addition of Jonathan Evans on Cello on “Another Day” is wonderful – you cannot go wrong with a good cello player!

The Mountaineer PHOENIX ROAD This album from Alley Club Records is overdue a mention. The album was launched by Cambridge based Phoenix Road last December. Described in the promo material as having a 60s vibe with a ‘mod’ern twist it certainly won’t have any issues under the trades description act. The band comprises of friends Tom Hinton and Jason Baldock with Andy Fairclough (he of From the Jam) on keyboards. Easy listening can sometimes be thought of as a pejorative term but not so in the is case, this album is very easy to listen to and very enjoyable with it. The title track ‘The Mountaineer’ is saved until the end of the album and sounds like it is one of those must-see-live tracks I keep collecting. What started out as two friends getting together to record music has evolved into a groups

Turn ‘em all on, then turn ‘em all down... SHANE KIRK Yes, its a book, not an album! But in my defence, it is a book about local music. Discover some amusing anecdotes about the local scene from someone who is out there gigging - he has even played the Grapevine stage at Ipswich Music Day. Have ever wondered what it is like to play, in the rain, at Papworth Everard Village Fete? Or perhaps you’ve pondered on how millennials might react to the concept of a thing called a B-Side… An entertaining and amusing book that you can dip in and out of at your leisure. Reading this compact volume has, at least for me, explained the one thing that has bugged me for years about Shane Kirk, where he got his Twitter handle from… and now I know.

Spring has sprung at last, and with any luck a little more sunshine will keep filtering through. Following on from last month’s feature, here’s a highlight of a few more arts festivals to keep your eye on. Laughter is something we all need a little more of, especially right now. What could be better than sunshine and laughter in the open air? The Red Card Comedy Club present a weekend dedicated to comedy with Laugh in the Park (23-26 July) at the Chapelfield Gardens, Norwich. They have already assembled a star-studded line-up including German Comedy Ambassador Henning When, Britain’s Got Talent winner Lost Voice Guy, comedy-improv troupe The Noise Next Door and Virgin Radio’s Matt Richardson to name just a handful. It’s bound to be a great weekend. Latitude (16-19 July) at Henham Park, Suffolk is one of the biggest festivals in the region, and if you’re fortunate enough to have a ticket I highly recommend a visit to the comedy

and theatre tents. This year’s comedy headliners are Bill Bailey, Jo Brand and Simon Amstell; and the line-up also features the likes of Kerry Godliman, Flo and Joan, Rich Hall and many more. The festival also features the Birmingham Royal Ballet, an eclectic mix of live podcasts, and a variety of literary, poetry and theatre performances. The beauty of Latitude is the ability to choose and make it ‘your’ festival. The relaxed and family-friendly environment makes it easy to just sit back, relax, soak up the atmosphere and get lost in the arts and music. Continuing the theme of simplicity and comfort in spoken word, The East Anglian Story Telling Festival (6 June) takes place in and around the richly historic Cressing Temple Barns, Essex this year. The line-up is yet to be released, but it’s bound to be a great family day out and celebrating good stories. Bury Festival (14-20 May) is all about the arts, and is set to host several music events alongside various dance, comedy and theatre events. This year, spoken word events and talks

feature strongly with a range of public figures, from Katie Piper to Robert Webb to Sir Trevor Nunn to name a few. It’s shaping up to be a very interesting festival this year. If you’re a fan of fringe theatre, look no further than Bury St Edmunds Fringe Festival (1 Apr-3 May) and PULSE Festival (4-7 June). The BSE Fringe Festival is new to me, and their line-up is jam packed with a variety of theatre, spoken word, comedy and more – do pop over to www.buryfestival.co.uk to see just what I mean. Meanwhile we are awaiting a full line-up for PULSE at the time of writing, but it always boasts an excitingly diverse program of events. Last, but by no means least, for the allrounders celebrating all things arts, look out for Southwold Arts Festival (20-28 June) and Chelmsford Arts & Cultural Festival (13 June-5 July) – both are hosting rich and diverse programmes of music, talks, poetry, theatre, visual art and more. It’s the perfect excuse for a family day out. Hopefully these suggestions have aided you in filling your diary over the next few months! Wishing you a sunny spring, full of great arts festivals. In light of the current situation, we recommend checking events are still running before travelling.
