StephenFoz Foz has been on the radio in Suffolk for well over 40 years. His on air activities began at Hospital Radio Ipswich in 1977. During his five year spell there he began working at Radio Orwell and when Saxon Radio came on air in 1982 Foz secured a full time job working for both stations. The BBC came calling in 1990 and he’s been at BBC Radio Suffolk ever since.

Later this Spring the American music legend Stevie Wonder is celebrating his 70th birthday. I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you just how much great music he has been responsible for down the years. I was very lucky to catch him at Wembley Arena some forty years ago when he was promoting one of his finest albums – Hotter Than July. Since then his visits to these shores have been sporadic, to say the very least. Stevie still has a huge following of course and that’s reflected in the popularity of a celebration of his music spearheaded by saxophone great Derek Nash. Derek has put together a show called Some Kinda Wonderful which went down an absolute storm last year at The Apex in Bury St Edmunds. It’s back in our neck of the woods very soon. Derek and his fellow musicians are at The Maritime Room in Southend on Wednesday, February 12 and then perform at the New Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich on Sunday, March 1. Derek’s expertise on the saxophone is widely recognised. He’s a long-standing member of Jools Holland’s Rhythm And Blues Orchestra and fronts a handful of his own jazz projects. His tribute to Stevie Wonder is a welcome addition to this country’s music offering and features the tremendous voice of Noel McCalla who for many years was a member of Manfred Mann’s Earth Band. Noel

has also contributed to recordings by Morrissey Mullen and Mike Rutherford among many others. Ticket sales for their New Wolsey debut have been going very well and at the time of writing the show is heading for a sell out. If you do miss out then you might like to know that the Some Kinda Wonderful experience is back at The Apex on Friday, April 17. The Some Kinda Wonderful concert is the first of two I’m presenting at the New Wolsey in early March. On Sunday, March 8 the expanded line-up of Nine Below Zero are in town. NBZ’s relatively new six piece line up has certainly breathed new life into a band who’ve been on the UK scene for more than 40 years. NBZ have always been worth seeing but I reckon the latest incarnation sees

the group at their very best. With Dennis Greaves and Mark Feltham still at the helm, the recruitment of female singer Charlie Austen, bassist Benjamin Willis, multi-instrumentalist Tom Monks and Sonny Greaves on drums has been a masterstroke. After an extensive tour towards the end of last year promoting the awesome Avalanche album, Nine Below Zero are carrying on in 2020 where they left off in 2019 and I can’t wait to see them back in Ipswich. The last time they played in Suffolk’s county town was on the tour they did opening for their close friends Squeeze. My association with NBZ goes back a long way. Along with John Butters, I used to bring them to The Lion’s Den in Ipswich in the 1990s and The Manor Ballroom in the noughties. We also put them on with Dr Feelgood at The Corn Exchange a few times and in more recent times they’ve graced The Jerwood Dance House, Venue 77 and The New Wolsey. In common with their fellow rhythm and blues legends Dr Feelgood, there are very few places in my hometown where NBZ haven’t played and I include the Ipswich Regent in that. Imagine my excitement when, as a teenager, I saw Dr Feelgood at what was then The Gaumont and then a few years later witnessed the classic Nine Below Zero line-up at the same place, firstly opening for The Kinks and then headlining their own show there. Check out the New Wolsey Theatre website for details of both my forthcoming promotions there. The concerts start at 7pm and will see both acts perform two sets.

Dynamites Rock Band

Hayley Clapperton

Four teenage lads from Dovercourt who have been in a rock band for six years and are making their mark on the rock scene as they release their first single. They have played West Cliff Theatre, The Landslide Festival and the 4Fs MCC Bike Rally as well as plenty of fetes in the local area.

HC: When did you make the decision to take the plunge and write your own tracks? Toby from We are Music suggested we should give it a go. William became inspired by situations at school and started writing.

HC: Who does what?

HC: How are you finding the process? Is there one group member who has a talent for lyrics or the melody, or is it all team work?

William Atkinson - lead guitar and vocals Jago Hepburn - rhythm guitar and vocals James Batholomew - drums and vocals Adam Oxley - bass guitar

William wrote the song and lyrics for our first song and we all added the parts for our instruments. We really enjoyed the whole experience of recording it at Hamford View Studio.

HC: How long has Dynamites been together?

HC: What made you select the current instrument you each play?

We joined the local We are Music Rock School and were put together as a band six years ago – we’re still together and doing gigs.

William & James could already play theirs. Jago joined as a singer but learnt to play the guitar and Adam could play the drums but decided to give the bass a go.

HC: How easy was it to choose your band name?

HC: When you are not making music, what hobbies do you enjoy?

The name was given to us by the rock school. Initially it was spelt ‘Dyno-mites’ as we were all small, we have now changed it to Dynamites as we’re older.

We all enjoy gaming. James like football, Jago plays golf and cricket and Adam loves being outside and walking.

HC: You guys look like you are having a great time…are you?

HC: When you become famous, what will your rider be?

HC: What do your mates & teachers think?

Wiliam - Tango ice blast James - Food and drink Jago - McDonalds Adam- A motorbike

Our mates think it’s really cool and our teachers are very proud of us.

HC: Any band member have a special skill outside of music that we don’t know about?

HC: How often do you practice together? At least once a week, more if we have time.

James is good at football, Adam loves engineering and Jago is having golf trials for Essex.

HC: Is it difficult to juggle practicing and your school work?

HC: What artist/group would you like to support?

At times it can be as we are getting close to our GCSEs.

Green Day, Fall Out Boy, Bowling for Soup or Fountains of Wayne.

It’s pretty exciting doing gigs when you see how much people are enjoying it.

HC: If you could choose any singer/musician to join the band for one gig, who would it be? William – I like our band just as it is Jago - Dave Grohl James - Jack Black Adam - Paul Stanley

was switched on when we were at a fete, he thought he was telling the band about a grasshopper on his foot but he told the whole audience! HC: Who is your biggest super-fan? Our roadies, our family!

HC: What super power would you each like to have?

HC: Thinking long term, do you all want to be rock stars?

William - Be one with the force or be the human torch James - To read minds Jago - Be really strong Adam - To fly

We would like to write more songs, we love playing gigs as well. Yes, we would all like to be rock stars but William and James would like to produce music, Jago would like to be a golf coach and Adam would like to gig enough to buy a motor bike.

HC: What challenges do you face being a new band and a young band?

HC: When is your next gig? What big plans do you have for 2020?

We would like to play more venues but are too young to play pubs! We would like to be old enough to not rely on our parents to be our roadies.

We have lots of gigs/biker festivals in the pipe line and we are itching to get out there and do as much as possible. We just had a confirmation for playing at the Spunky Monkey Bike Rally on the 13th June at Bury St Edmunds.

HC: Do you feel you have found your own style? We are trying to put our style into rock music, we’re influenced by American punk rock. HC: Which song do you most like to perform, and why?

HC: What are your social media links, where can we hear your music? Our single ‘Clone’ is being released on all the music platforms Spotify, Apple music, etc on the 18th January.

We like to perform our own song ‘Clone’ as we are really proud of it.

Dynamites

HC: What types of music do you enjoy listening to when you are hanging out?

@Dynamites_uk

Rock music.

@dynamites_UK

HC: When/where was your first gig, and how nervous were you? Did it go well? Our first gig was six years ago when we performed at the Kingsway Hall in Dovercourt with We are Music we were nine and ten years old. We were so nervous but it went really well. HC: How did it feel to hear your first single played on the radio? Were you all together listening? We were so excited and very proud. We couldn’t listen to it together as some were on holiday but we all listened with our families. HC: Anything unusual happened at a gig? Yes, Jagos guitar strap broke while we were playing. Also James forgot his microphone

“Did The Right Thing” last December. The end result has been well worth the wait, riffs to die for, deep meaningful lyrics and an opening title track that makes you stop what you are doing and makes you listen. If you are one of those who believe that nice girls don’t play in guitar bands, think again. Yep, you’ll be there, front of stage playing air guitar to ‘Nice Girls’. The album has been produced in collaboration with some of the biggest names in the music industry. And how did all this come about?

Album of the Month Where Are You Now? CLARE FREE Where Are You Now? And well you might ask of Clare Free; it’s been six years since her last album release and a full ten years since the Clare Free Band was formed. The answer is Where Are You Now? The latest album from this Suffolk based blues rocker extraordinaire.

Clare explains, “I went for lunch at the Old Jet Arts hub which is run by Jesse Quin of Keane. While I was there, I met the massively acclaimed music producer Richard Flack. Richard is Robbie Williams’ producer, and he also works with other huge artists including Tina Turner, Olly Murs, Rudamental, the Spice Girls, Pulp, Stereophonics, INXS the list goes on and on.

Having taken a break from recording to raise her youngest child, Where Are You Now? is her first release since her acclaimed Dust And Bones album in 2012.

We got chatting and I mentioned to Richard that I wanted to record a new album. When I spoke to him a couple of weeks later, he said he would be interested in producing and mixing it as long as we worked well together, and he invited me into the studio to do a trial song to see how we got on.”

I’ve been looking forward to this album ever since Clare released the single

Obviously, they got on very well, the end product is testament to that. From

the opening anthem, Clare gradually slows the pace down from the opening track to “Thank You”, a gentle acoustic number oozing with emotion. In truth, all of the song lyrics ooze with emotion, the sort that make you want to talk about the stories behind the words. I feel that could be a long chat! Working alongside Clare musically on the album are Jamie Kruppa on bass, Dave Jackson on drums and Bob Kidby on harmonica & percussion and backing vocals. In this album Clare has produced a work she is rightly proud of, one that merits a place alongside the works of the great blues artists in the country ‘Where Are You Now?’ is due for release on Friday 6th March. Already in the pipeline is a new ‘solo’ album from Kev Walford. I say solo, but it features a great many other local musicians, not least of which is former stage partner Kelly Bayfield. MtyE THE ALBUM Since I began curating Music to your Ears a year ago this month, my aim has been to make you aware of what local music is out there. Squeezing in eight or nine new releases doesn’t leave a lot of room for reviews - and lets face it if they make the cut they are good. This month we are changing the format slightly, introducing an album of the month and I’m delighted to kick off with such a great offering from Clare Free. The Christmas / New Year period is a quiet one for album releases. For it is then that I was compiling this piece and whilst I lose count of the number of singles being released, albums are what I am looking for.

The two are going in different directions musically in 2020 and Kelly too has a new album in the making, featuring - at long last - a recording of ‘Whistling Man’. Norwich based Dan Fenster & The Alibis, regulars at the wonderful little Walnut Tree Shades, are planning a release later in the year. It’s been five years since their last offering “Won’t Go Back”. Meanwhile from Cambridgeshire we can expect a summer release from Mark Shepherd. No need to post CDs just send me your album links and EPK, details below, and I’ll take it from there. Can’t guarantee to review everything but nor can I review an album I know nothing about!

February is an odd month, isn’t it? Everyone still seems stuck in the January blues, and it’s still a little too dark and cold outside. That said, it’s the perfect time for theatre as the Spring Season begins and a wealth of new shows appear for the launch of the 2020 season. Something I aim to do in 2020 is see more original shows, be it reimagined adaptations or original pieces of theatre. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good jukebox musical. Who doesn’t love hearing all the hits of your favourite artist or genres? I also love adaptations, from films and TV – again, there’s a comfort in familiarity and seeing what is possible from screen to stage. However, I want to try to support more new, innovative and challenging stories and shows this year. I understand why many struggle to take the risk, as it’s not always easy to part with cash for something you’re not certain you’ll enjoy. But, in most cases, you could probably see three original shows in a small theatre for the price of one toppriced ticket of a big touring show – and you never know what hidden gems you might find if you take that risk.

The New Wolsey Theatre, Ipswich, is always one of a few places I turn to first to get inspired as they often offer a wide variety of unique shows. A Little Space (10-11 Mar) is a Gecko and Mind the Gap co-production which asks the question: what does it mean to you to have a little space? A little space could be where we can escape the world and be ourselves. But it can be an unpredictable space too. A place where whispers come to life and one kind gesture could change everything. Next up, The Mystery Of The Raddlesham Mumps (7 Apr) stars celebrated poet and broadcaster Murray Lachlan Young (Radio 4, Radio 2 & BBC6 Music poet in residence) in this thrilling new family performance. The show mixes compelling story-telling with a brilliant musical score by Arun Ghosh, oodles of theatricality and a touch of exquisite silliness. Eastern Angles is another wonderfully innovative company, often giving us quirky stories, and this time they’re bringing The Ballad of Maria Marten (20-22 Feb) to the New Wolsey in a thrilling retelling of a reallife murder mystery. Following this, their big spring show this year is Red Skies. The story

of which features two of Suffolk’s most famous residents: George Orwell, who took his name from the Ipswich river, and Arthur Ransome, who was a resident on it, and asks what would have happened if they had met? It will be touring the region between March-June so stay tuned for more updates. Moving away from Ipswich, The Thelmas present Ladykiller (12 Mar) by Madeline Gould at The Harlow Playhouse. The description simply reads: “A hotel room, a maid and a dead woman. It’s not what it looks like, really, it’s not. It was self-defence… and anyway, the woman was asking for it.” – I don’t know about you, but I’m intrigued. Over at the ADC Theatre in Cambridge, spanning a time period of over fifty years, Lovesong (3-7 Mar) tells the story of one couple, from two different points in their lives. We watch William and Margaret embark on a life together as young lovers in their twenties, while Billy and Maggie look back on their relationship as worldly companions in their seventies. Watch as lives collide and time dissolves in this hauntingly beautiful exploration of love, memory and loss. I’ve noticed there’s a trend of somewhat dark stories here – maybe it’s the gloomy weather outside that makes us naturally drawn to them. But either way, there are heaps of eerie, humorous and fun stories to be unearthed so dare to look for something different this year.
