StephenFoz Foz has been on the radio in Suffolk for well over 40 years. His on air activities began at Hospital Radio Ipswich in 1977. During his five year spell there he began working at Radio Orwell and when Saxon Radio came on air in 1982 Foz secured a full time job working for both stations. The BBC came calling in 1990 and he’s been at BBC Radio Suffolk ever since.

This month sees the annual Ipswich Jazz Club blues night which is run in conjunction with BBC Radio Suffolk. The event has a rich history stretching back to the days the club held their sessions at The Manor Ballroom in Ipswich town centre. I have very fond memories of the very first one. It starred the UK’s Queen Of The Blues – singer Dana Gillespie. Dana’s career began in the mid-1960s when she became a close friend of David Bowie. She went on to guest on some of his recordings and signed to the MainMan management company, releasing a couple of albums which until earlier this year had been out of print for many years. The good folk at Cherry Red Records put that right with a wonderful set of all her

MainMan recordings which now takes pride of place in my collection of Dana Gillespie recordings. Among the many Dana Gillespie albums I own are her releases on the Blue Horizon label, the recording company established by producer Mike Vernon initially to release the work of a young British blues band by the name of Fleetwood Mac. The rest, as they say, is history. Mike went on to become one of the most important figures in the history of British blues and some fifty years later that reputation remains fully intact. In recent times, his production work for other acts has been put on the backburner to allow him time to concentrate on his own project - Mike Vernon and the Mighty Combo.

Find us on Facebook: GrapevineLIVE

Singer Mike is based in Spain these days but he shows no sign of putting his feet up. Admittedly, he’s not as busy as he used to be but he continues to make his mark on his favourite music genre. The first incarnation of The Mighty Combo featured Spanish musicians but it didn’t take long for Mike to realise that his own project had the potential to reach a Europe-wide audience. A few years ago Mike assembled an all-star band of mostly British blues musicians and if you saw their triumphant show at Ipswich’s New Wolsey Theatre you’ll know how good they were. Since then Mike has reshuffled his pack slightly. Guitarist Kid Carlos, keyboards player Matt Little and saxophonist Paul Tasker remain but the Mighty Combo now has a new rhythm section in the shape of Bernie Fox (drums) and Orlando Shearer (bass). Together they perform jump blues of the highest calibre and bring their show to Suffolk’s county town on Sunday, January 19. Following the success of last January’s IJC/BBC Radio Suffolk blues night starring California’s Rick Estrin and the Nightcats, the jazz club are again selling tickets in advance from their website (www.ipswichjazzclub.co.uk). You can buy them from there for £18 or you can pay on the night when admission will be £20. I’m the first to admit Rick Estrin’s incredible performance at the beginning of 2019 will take some beating but I’m confident the revitalised Mike Vernon and the Mighty Combo will be every bit as good. I’ll be your MC for the night so I very much hope to welcome you to The California Club on Foxhall Road on the third Sunday of this month. It will be Ipswich’s first high profile gig of 2020 and looks set to raise a very high bar for the rest to follow.

Salvador

Lucas Evans, singer and guitarist Hayley Goldsmith

Hayley Goldsmith catches up with Lucas Evans, singer and guitarist from Salvador, a new young band from Suffolk who are already making an impact as they were chosen by BBC Introducing to support Ed Sheeran in Ipswich. HG: Tell me how it started, what’s your story? LE: Jan and I had been mates since we were kids but we seemed to grow out of everyone else too quickly so we turned to music. Neither of us played guitar but we picked it up quite easily, motivating each other to improve. HG: Tell us Who’s Who? LE: I’m on vocals and guitar, Jan Ashwell on lead guitar, Felix Church on bass and Jude Machan on drums.

HG: Who are your influences? LE: I think it’s hard to pin down artists that influence us as a group. We’re influenced by everything we indulge in, be it music, art, literature, whatever. Musically, we all have very different tastes so I think it’s that eclectic mix which creates interesting art. HG: How did you choose the band name? LE: We all have ties with Europe - Jan is German, Jude and I both lived in Spain at points during our childhoods therefore the continental sound of the word seemed apt. Also, Salvador translates as ‘saviour’ in Spanish which is a very optimistic word. We think it’s important for the youth of today to be optimistic in a time where it’s very easy to be negative as we are dismissed by the older generations.

Find us on Facebook: GrapevineLIVE

HG: What’s your musical style? LE: Having quite differing tastes, we didn’t have a specific sound that we were aiming for, we just wanted to see what we could collaboratively create. Obviously over time our sound has evolved and now we are more sure of what it is we are creating. HG: Do any of you play other instruments? LE: I am a classically trained singer and clarinetist; Jan is a multi-instrumentalist, playing guitar, bass, drums, piano and violin; Jude is actually a very talented guitarist, however we were in need of a drummer so he decided to learn drums to join the band; Felix just plays bass but we are all invested in a wide array of genres, playing in orchestras, choirs, jazz bands etc. Some people laugh when we say that we are classically trained musicians however we believe this wider knowledge of music really adds to our sound. HG: Tell us how your song writing process works? LE: We don’t have a process as such. I have always written the vocal melody and lyrics but it’s normally a collaborative process between Jan and myself. HG: What was it like to release your debut EP back in March? And what’s it been like since? LE: Our debut EP was a culmination of everything we had worked towards since the start of Salvador, some of those songs were over two years old, therefore we were very glad to finally have it released. HG: Are you at college? LE: We are all at sixth form, studying a wide array of A-Levels.

January 2020

9

HG: When you are not making music, what hobbies do you enjoy? LE: The others like skating, I’ve never really gotten into it though so I just watch them fall over repeatedly. HG: What are your plans for 2020? LE: Record some more music, finish our A-Levels, then fully commit to the band. HG: How did it feel to support Ed Sheeran this year? Tell us how it came about? LE: We were chosen by Richard Haugh and Angelle Joseph, the presenters of BBC Introducing in Suffolk, to open for Ed Sheeran on the penultimate night of his Divide World Tour. We are so grateful for the opportunity they gave us. The experience is hard to describe - just imagine thirty thousand people at your feet! HG: What challenges are there being a young band? LE: The main challenge is constantly being called a young band, we don’t want any sympathy for being younger. I guess balancing music with school work can be difficult but every musician is in the same boat trying to keep their head above the water. HG: Are you guys mates? LE: Yes. The reason we do this is because we’re mates, we didn’t start off playing these instruments. HG: Who’s mum is the band’s biggest supporter? LE: I’ll let them argue that amongst themselves.

Hello January, the month when we always used to write the wrong year on our cheques for the first few weeks. OK, with contactless payments that one has gone by the wayside!

your work as a musician noticed but what then? What happens if you get booked to play a forty-five minute slot at a festival, you are going to need more material.

Finally getting around to playing the albums you got for Christmas and listening to them properly, that too is a thing of the past. There is so much music about on so many different platforms that the choice on offer can be overwhelming.

My 2020 musical resolution for Grapevine Magazine is to listen to more albums by local artists. Send your album streaming links to tony@grapevinelive.co.uk. Thank you.

In preparing this month’s MtyE I’ve been struck by the lack of albums by local artists, despite the pre Chrimas period seeing an increase in national and international releases. I have singles a-plenty to listen to but to my mind one single does not a musician make. According to research by Billboard, the time Americans spend listening to music is down from 32 to 27 hrs per week, that’s a drop of 15%. My theory is that we now just listen in sound bites. With so much music vying for our attention we simply click skip and carry on. So, yes, that attention grabbing single is all - important to getting

In the meantime, here are some EP and single releases that have blipped my audio radar lately.

Living in the Dark ROISIN O’HAGAN Not a new single, it was released back in May 2019 but Roisin has just released a new moody music video to accompany her song about the demons within and how none of us are really out of the woods....

Casual TOM LUMLEY & THE BRAVE LIASON Supported by a very cleverly produced music video, Casual from this four piece Cambridgeshire band is punchy, punky, rocky and very very deep – something we don’t talk about, just a sign of the times...

The Flowers BROOKE TELLING Brooke launched her debut EP last December. The title track was written in memory of her Gran, proof as if any were need that the best songs come from the heart. We’ll be keeping an eye on Brooke’s progress...

AMY MILNER A Little More

The Broads in December Visitors to the Norfolk Broads generally see it in its summer glory, few venture out on the broads in the depths of winter. This single magically evokes the beauty of winter and wildlife on the broads...

POLLY PREACHER Blood on the Moon Despite the title, this is fun poppy sounding single with a music video shot at Walton-on-the-Naze to accompany it. On the copy sent to our office is a second track (Can you have a B-side on a CD?) - Polly’s cover of Dolores O’Riordan’s When You’re Gone.

Haunting is the word that leaps to mind on listening to this unusual offering from Ipswich based Amy Milner. Unusual in a way that makes you want more, so I looked her up on Spotify. Glad I did...

Tell us what you are listening to and what you like about it - you’ll need to list between six and eight albums, they must be by local artists based in Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk or Suffolk and the releases must be relatively recent.

If you are now wondering how to get your music mentioned on these pages. That could not be easier. Either email me a link to your music on your preferred digital platform tony@grapevinelive.co.uk or do it the old fashioned way and post a CD to MtyE, Grapevine Magazine, 14-20 Wharfedale Road, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP1 4JP.

Whatever the genre, tell us about the music that has got you pressing repeat, the CDs you’ve worn out, the ones that get played at 11!

For 2020 I prefer albums, can tolerate EPs but singles... well, if I must!

Here we are, a new year and decade begins! I’m ready for even more exciting theatre to sink my teeth into throughout 2020, and I hope you are too for there are plenty of good things coming our way. One show bound to spread some excitement across the region is Blithe Spirit, starring the legendary Jennifer Saunders. 2020 seems to very much be the year for her, as she tours with the show prior to a West End run, then moves swiftly onto Sister Act at

Blithe Spirit

the Eventim Apollo in London – so if you’re a fan, you’re in luck. To those who may not know, Blithe Spirit tells of Novelist Charles Condomine and his second wife Ruth, who are haunted by his past relationship when an eccentric medium (Madame Arcati – as played by Saunders) inadvertently conjures up the ghost of his first wife at a séance. When she appears, visible only to Charles, she’s determined to sabotage his current marriage and life, and it all gets a little complicated.

Everybody’s Talking About Jamie

It’s a Noel Coward classic, and can be caught at the Cambridge Arts Theatre (10- 15 Feb) and Norwich Theatre Royal (24-29 Feb) ahead of a London run. Interestingly, there’s a star-studded film adaptation coming our way soon too. However, get to the theatre as it’s bound to be an entertaining evening. A Monster Calls is another classic doing the rounds, also stopping at Cambridge Arts Theatre (24-28 March) and Norwich Theatre Royal (21-25 April). Based on the piercing novel by Patrick Ness, the story is vividly brought to life on stage in this award-winning adaptation. Thirteen year-old Conor and his mum have managed just fine since his dad moved away, but now his mum is sick and not getting any better. His grandmother won’t stop interfering and the kids at school won’t look him in the eye. One night, Conor is woken by something at his window - a monster has come walking, telling Conor tales from when it walked before. When it’s finished, Conor must tell his own story and face his deepest fears. A Monster Calls offers a dazzling insight into love, life and healing. New shows continue to rise with the likes of SIX – the musical concert show telling the story of each of Henry VIII’s

ex-wives – coming to the Norwich Theatre Royal (14-19 July) and also visiting Southend Cliffs Pavilion (7-12 April) too. Don’t miss your chance to join the Queens in their reign. Alongside it’s West End success and ahead of the exciting film scheduled for release, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is gearing up for its first UK tour which stops at Norwich Theatre Royal (1-6 June). Inspired by a true story, it tells of young Jamie New, the 16 year old from Sheffield who wants to go to his school prom in a dress – but will people be able to accept him for who he is? Shows like this are great for inspiring, educating and encouraging a younger generation of theatregoers, which is crucial in keeping the buzz of theatre alive. Even after all that, I’ve only scratched the surface of what is on our doorsteps in East Anglia. There is a brilliant Spring/ Summer season in our region. If you are able to, do get out to your local theatres and help keep theatre alive. You never know what little unexpected gems you may find. I’d love to know which shows you’re excited about or hear about any shows I may have missed, so feel free to reach out on social media and let us know!
