Just an hour north of San Francisco lies a rural utopia filled with rolling hills, grazing cattle, and endless vineyards, possessing the kind of pastoral beauty rarely seen outside of Tuscany.
Wild grapes have always been in abundance in Napa Valley. The first vines were planted as far back as the 1700s by a group of missionaries. At the time, no specific grape varieties were cultivated, and vines produced only field blend grapes used solely for religious purposes.
The area’s commercial birth of the wine industry took hold in the mid to late 1800s, well before the California Gold Rush, when vintner, George Yount, planted the first commercial vines containing specific varietal grapes in the valley.
A small group of European immigrants like Jacob Berringer, Gustav Nebaum, and Charles Krug also arrived in Napa, all eager to try and make wines that would rival and surpass those of their homelands. Ever since, a host of settlers, pioneers, visionaries, and risk takers have flocked to the valley and contributed to its colorful history.
The Napa Valley wine industry’s rise to prominence on the global market is in large part due to the efforts of vintners over just the last 50 years. In particular, the Paris Tasting of 1976 was the single most significant event in terms of putting Napa on the world map.
For the first time ever, Napa Valley wines were blind taste tested in a contest that pit them against the best wines of southern France, and Napa prevailed among the standards of excellence for both chardonnay and cabernet! This tasting victory was a critical turning point for Napa Valley, awarding the region a credibility it never had before.
From that point on, the Napa Valley wine industry would be forever changed, and wineries would grow from a few dozen to the several hundred that exist today.
