TWELVE ALBERTA OIL AND NATURAL GAS COMPANIES SPENT APPROXIMATELY $14.4 BILLION WITH INDIGENOUSAFFILIATED BUSINESSES FROM 2021 TO 2023
A report prepared by iTOTEM Analytics for the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) shows that Alberta’s oil and natural gas industry’s supply chain is a major contributor to the economic prosperity of Indigenous businesses and communities across the province. Twelve CAPP member companies, representing over half of Alberta’s oil and natural gas production (in 2023), participated in the survey. The report, titled “Shared Values Report on Indigenous Supply Chain and Indigenous Community Investment in Alberta’s Oil and Natural Gas Industry” shows that, during the three year period between 2021 to 2023:
The CAPP member companies who participated in the study spent close to $13.9 billion through the procurement of goods and services from 585 Indigenous-affiliated vendors based in Alberta across 110 municipalities and 45 Indigenous communities.
The number of Indigenous-affiliated vendors within Alberta’s oil and natural gas sector supply chain rose by 12.9% during the reporting period.
Indigenous community investment expenditures by participating member companies also grew by 24.9%, rising from $17.9 million to $22.4 million.
An estimated $58.6 million in Indigenous community investments was distributed to 195 Alberta based organizations located across more than 65 Alberta municipalities and 45 Indigenous communities.

Our Statement on the Passing of Bill C-5, an Act to enact the Free Trade and Labour Mobility in Canada Act and the Building Canada Act
On Friday, the House of Commons approved Bill C-5. The Bill is now with the Senate and is expected to be passed this week.
“This legislation rises to meet the moment of the economic crisis that Canada is facing from the United States’ unjust trade war on Canadian goods and resources,” said Matthew Holmes, Chief of Public Policy, in a recent statement. “Bill C-5 echoes many of the priorities we outlined in our All-In Canada plan — especially the urgent need to get major projects moving again.”

Inflation Holds Steady, Giving the Bank of Canada Some Space to Breathe
Canada’s inflation rate stayed at 1.7% in May, right in line with expectations — and a welcome sign of stability, even with tariffs still in place.
As our Principal Economist, Andrew DiCapua, points out: “We can breathe a little easier since inflation behaved this month.”
With growth slowing, the Bank of Canada is expected to hold off on any changes in July and shift its focus to potential downside risks.

Industry-Wide Opposition to the Digital Services Tax
Last week, alongside five other business associations, we sent a letter to Prime Minister Carney asking that he demonstrate Canada’s seriousness about strengthening alliances, improving competitiveness and restoring affordability by pausing the June 30 DST payment deadline.
We believe that redefining Canada’s commercial relationships and forging a stronger, more secure partnership with the United States cannot be achieved if the Canadian government proceeds with its current timeline to collect a retroactive tax on digital service companies.
