EVENTS JANUARY - APRIL 2016

CLITHEROE

WELCOME TO OUR WINTER/SPRING EVENTS GUIDE As we look forward to a prosperous New Year full of exciting events and creative learning projects, I’d like to take a moment to reflect on all that has come to pass in 2015. We are thrilled to be recognised by the Ribble Valley Business Awards as “Tourism Business Winner” as well as being awarded a “Star in Tourism” for excellent visitor facilities by the Ribble Valley Tourism Association. This year we have hosted 214 ticketed events which has seen us improve the quality of our varied programme of arts, music theatre and entertainment. Our engagement with local schools, businesses and other arts organisations – together with our events programme has helped us attract more than 60,000 people through our doors in total, adding considerable value to Clitheroe’s visitor economy. With this in mind, 2016 will see the launch of our new website to improve the customer experience and your ability to interact and share the journey with us. The Grand’s continued vision is to provide a creative hub for families and young people and support the development needs of the wider community through the delivery of an interactive programme of events, classes and projects. Many thanks for your continued support. Steven Lancaster Executive Director In partnership with:

SPOKEN WORD

In 1782, Choderlos de Laclos’ novel of sex, intrigue and betrayal in pre-revolutionary France scandalised the world. 200 years later, Christopher Hampton’s irresistible adaptation swept the board, winning the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Play. Josie Rourke’s revival now marks the play’s 30-year anniversary and stars Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey), Janet McTeer (The White Queen) and Dominic West (The Wire).

James Taylor, one of the great British instrumentalists of his generation, has taken his trademark howling Hammond sound to the masses for over 25 years. Support comes from Lancashire-based jazz funk group The Good Foot.

FUNK & SOUL

One of the country’s top reggae and dub acts, founded in 1993 by Greg Roberts and Tim Bran. Their debut album 360° set the stage for the follow up, Second Light, to be cited as a favourite of John Peel’s and saw them play at Glastonbury just one year after their formation. Continuing to record and release new music, Dreadzone are famed for their live performances and their continued popularity remains a testament to their presence in British music.

Bella Hardy’s seventh solo album With The Dawn – her first since being named BBC Radio 2 Folk Singer Of The Year in 2014 – isn’t just the latest collection of songs from this prolific and ingenious artist. The album is an account of one year of her life. Where previously Bella has adapted and explored traditional ballads and fables to tell her contemporary folk tales, the stories that inspired these songs are her own experiences: good and bad, happy or sad. We are delighted to welcome Bella and her band to The Grand for the first time.

SOLOMON

ABOUT THE SOLOMON PROJECT The Solomon Project is advocating the needs of some of Kenya’s poorest children. It works in partnership with Mary’s Meals, providing meals to chronically hungry children in their local school. By using local produce and community volunteers we are able to feed one child in school for a whole year for just £17.00. HOW IT WORKS The Solomon project provides daily meals to chronically hungry children in their local school. The children then have an incentive to attend school and through education, gain a better future for them selves and their communities. The result l Daily attendance dramatically rises. l When the gnawing pain of hunger is removed, concentration in classes improves. l Better grades lead to greater opportunities in life and a chance to break the cycle of poverty. So far the Solomon project is feeding 5200 in schools but with your help we are looking to extend our work. It costs just £17 to feed a child in school for a whole year. That’s just 8 pence a day!!! Would you consider donating or fundraising? WHERE & WHY Eldoret is a town in West/central Kenya, which is the nearest conurbation to the remote area of Turkana. Many people fleeing the drought conditions live here. Previous to that, Eldoret was the epicentre of the post

election tribal conflict from 2007 onwards which resulted in neighbour massacring neighbour. Many of the children being fed by the Solomon project are orphans of that civil war. The schools feeding programme is mainly centred on the slum areas and is aimed at getting street children into schools. Their situation is desperate. They live in gangs on the streets. Most sniff glue to suppress hunger pangs and to dull the pain of life on the streets. They are given this by adults who run the “barracks” where they gather for safety in numbers. They are constantly subjected to brutal attacks and have horrific stories to tell. The influx of children who’ve arrived as a result of the drought has made the problem even worse in the last couple of years. Previously it was only boys who were living like this, but now there are girls too which has given rise to the new phenomenon of street families, where babies are being born on the streets and in the rubbish tips where the children live. We are told many of them, once weaned off the glue, are very intelligent and make good students. DONATIONS CAN BE MADE By phone 01200 421599 or online at www.thesolomonproject.co.uk or upon purchasing a ticket through our Box Office.
