I would personally like to thank all those who have donated towards this incredible cause. Steven Lancaster Executive Director

WELCOME to another jam-packed season of events at The Grand. We take you right through until Christmas with a mouth-watering blend of live music, theatre, comedy and spoken word events. We also have a packed half-term activity schedule for young people and a creative range of projects for youth arts engagement. We’re excited to bring a number of artists to The Grand for the first time. Two of these concerts will be through our participation with ‘MusicNet’ in collaboration with Band on the Wall (Manchester) and Root Music. Matt Halsall and the Gondwana Orchestra will appear in October. Bandleader, trumpeter and DJ, Matt’s a modernist of jazz and his recent work is garnering international acclaim. This year has seen the launch of The Grand’s ‘Clitheroe Comedy Club’ in conjunction with Just For Laughs. We have been delighted at the tone and the feedback we have received from our audience. We look forward to developing these nights on a quarterly basis. Thanks for your continued support of The Grand and we look forward to seeing you at one or more of our events. Dave Hemingway and Ali Wheeler, singers with the band – were having too much fun to get out the pipe and slippers, and so The South was formed. Armed with a sensational back catalogue of hits such as ‘Song For Whoever’, ‘Perfect Ten’, ‘Rotterdam’, ‘Don’t Marry Her’, ‘You Keep It All In’, ‘Old Red Eyes Is Back’ and many others, there is a long way to go on this particular road.

SOLOMON

VENUE HIRE

ABOUT THE SOLOMON PROJECT The Solomon Project is advocating the needs of some of Kenya’s poorest children. It works in partnership with Mary’s Meals, providing meals to chronically hungry children in their local school. By using local produce and community volunteers we are able to feed one child in school for a whole year for just £17.00. HOW IT WORKS The Solomon project provides daily meals to chronically hungry children in their local school. The children then have an incentive to attend school and through education, gain a better future for them selves and their communities.

With our state of the art technical facilities, rehearsal spaces, versatile auditorium and our modern conference suite The Grand are able to meet a wide range of requirements to suit all event types. Our friendly and experienced staff can provide a range of support services including bespoke event catering, technical help, marketing and box office support. We can cater for a diverse range of events including: Live music concerts Theatre productions Charity functions Conferences Book/product launches School events Exhibitions Wedding celebrations If you are interested in hiring The Grand for your event please don’t hesitate to contact our Events team on 01200 421599 or email The Grand: hello@thegrandvenue.co.uk 32

The result l Daily attendance dramatically rises. l When the gnawing pain of hunger is removed, concentration in classes improves. l Better grades lead to greater opportunities in life and a chance to break the cycle of poverty. So far the Solomon project is feeding 5200 in schools but with your help we are looking to extend our work. It costs just £17 to feed a child in school for a whole year. That’s just 8 pence a day!!! Would you consider donating or fundraising?

Please note: We regret it is not possible to hire The Grand for birthday parties or christenings.

WHERE & WHY Eldoret is a town in West/central Kenya, which is the nearest conurbation to the remote area of Turkana. Many people fleeing the drought conditions live here. Previous to that, Eldoret was the epicentre of the post

election tribal conflict from 2007 onwards which resulted in neighbour massacring neighbour. Many of the children being fed by the Solomon project are orphans of that civil war. The schools feeding programme is mainly centred on the slum areas and is aimed at getting street children into schools. Their situation is desperate. They live in gangs on the streets. Most sniff glue to suppress hunger pangs and to dull the pain of life on the streets. They are given this by adults who run the “barracks” where they gather for safety in numbers. They are constantly subjected to brutal attacks and have horrific stories to tell. The influx of children who’ve arrived as a result of the drought has made the problem even worse in the last couple of years. Previously it was only boys who were living like this, but now there are girls too which has given rise to the new phenomenon of street families, where babies are being born on the streets and in the rubbish tips where the children live. We are told many of them, once weaned off the glue, are very intelligent and make good students. DONATIONS CAN BE MADE By phone 01200 421599 or online at www.thesolomonproject.co.uk or upon purchasing a ticket through our Box Office.
