MEET OUR GRADUATES

We spoke to two of our Engineering Graduates and asked them about their time on the project.

During my time on the Graduate programme I have developed knowledge and experience of software and IT skills. In addition, through my graduate site engineering experience I am fully confident in understanding drawings, solving technical and practical issues on site, whilst developing my leadership and management skills. I am confident and an excellent team player and enjoy building and developing strong working relationships with peers and colleagues.

During my 2 years working as part of the University of York project team, I have had real exposure to both the civil engineering and building side of the industry. This experience has helped me develop technical knowledge and practical skills. I have been responsible for quality observations, setting out and snagging. I have a better understanding of interpreting drawings and believe my decision making has improved. I have also really enjoyed working as part of team to deliver this exciting project

3.0 Employment WORK EXPERIENCE, CONSTRUCTION CURRICULUM SUPPORT ACTIVITIES

I’ve always had an interest in construction, particularly buildings and how they are constructed and maintained. When I left school, I originally pursued a degree in building surveying, but I desperately wanted to develop my practical experience. I applied for an apprenticeship with GRAHAM and started their programme to gain a technical apprenticeship to HNC Level. When the pandemic struck, our mentors at Heriot Watt University and the team at GRAHAM were supportive throughout and ensured we all stayed on track, achieved our outcomes and produced the appropriate evidence.”

14 WORK EXPERIENCE OPPORTUNITIES

were facilitated on the project with GRAHAM or members of the supply chain, we believe that work experience is a valuable tool to encourage the next generation of workers into the construction industry.

Delivered throughout the University of York project.

Eldho completed his work experience with SES Engineering Services, one of GRAHAM’s subcontractors at the Unversity of York

Elly completed her work placement and she has now been offered a job with GRAHAM as a Trainee Engineer.

Rania was a work experience, she had previously visited the site on a site tour and asked about a work placement.

Work Experience industry Placement

No problem with this, I haven’t had chance to catch up with Cameron recently, however the feedback from site is very encouraging. Cameron has fitted in well with the team and is making good progress and has shown a good grasp of the role in hand. He can perform setting out duties with minimal supervision and has great potential. Hopefully, this can be maintained and I’m sure Cameron has a great future ahead of him, hopefully engaged on further Moortown projects.

FYI we have also offered a permanent role to Lorna Howard who I believe completes her HNC in Construction Management at York College in the coming weeks – Lorna will be taking up a role at our Full Sutton Project which is scheduled to be on-site in July this year.

We believe it is essential to attract young people into the industry, and it has certainly improved our links with local colleges, as well as improving our social value commitment. It has been a positive experience having Cameron as an apprentice engineer on this project. Very eager to learn and showed great interest. Once on site, it was imperative that an appropriate ‘mentor’ could be found. The work is fast paced, and as Cameron gained more experience, time demands diminished as he developed. It is so important that employers make sure they put the time in to get the best for both student and the company. Establishing a good relationship to engage and support the college to promote both the business and the industry makes a big difference overall.

MEET CAMERON...

Cameron came to us on a 360hr work experience placement through York College. Over and above the 360-hour requirement, Cameron worked through last year’s summer holidays and throughout this year (and to date) he has attended site 2-3 days per week fitting around his academic studies. Cameron will be taking up a position with us as an Apprentice Site Engineer from September 2022.

During his placement he has been working alongside our site engineer gaining experience in setting out duties (he’s now capable of setting out with minimal supervision), and general construction works as well as an understanding of our ISO9001 QA Systems. We have also facilitated his CSCS card prior to his placement.

3 CONSTRUCTION CURRICULUM SUPPORT ACTIVITIES

were hosted by GRAHAM throughout the University of York project. These were designed to support and encourage our young people to learn more.

Dog Society Student Wellbeing at York University

When we were asked by our client, University of York to help assist a visit from the Dog Society in our newly handed over Anne Lister Hub we jumped at the chance.

Our Site Manager & Community Liaison Manager assisted the University with safety barriers to create a safe zone for the dogs to be in. Floor protection was also provided by GRAHAM to ensure the floor was not marked by the barriers.

The aim of the Dog Society is to assist with the students wellbeing and mental health. Whether they are missing their dogs at home or currentlt having a hard time with life and living away from home, the society’s aim is to make that person smile. That definately worked for Team GRAHAM.

LOCAL SUPPLY CHAIN

It was a great opportunity for SES to be involved in the University of York project, allowing us to build on our already robust local resource, utilising our local apprentices and supply chain, supporting local charities and schools by donating items for much needed community projects and also hosting work experience placements, giving local students essential skills for their future.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

We organised several community engagement events during our time on the University of York project.

GRAHAM and Supply Chain partners donated to York Foodbank

The team at York wanted to do their bit for the community so the team arranged a food donation area where staff could donate food, toileries and household supplies to help those in need. Once the donations were collected they boxed it up and delivered it to the York Foodbank who were thankful of this kind gesture.

250th Birthday Heritage Project at St Oswald’s Primary School, York

I am writing because your business recently contributed to the 250th birthday heritage project at St Oswald’s Primary, York.

I am delighted to say that the new seating area is almost complete and is looking wonderful. None of this could have happened without your generous contriutions and we are really grateful for your support.

Thank you again for your valued support to our community

GRAHAM & their supply chain partners worked closely with St Oswald’s Primary to help build a Hertigate Bench and a Time Capsule that would incorporate the original foundation stones of the school from 1771 and 1846.

The bench also included tiles that were designed and created by the children in collaboration with a local artist. As part of the unveiling ceremony, a time capsule filled with artefacts created by children to represent current times will be sealed into the bench.

GRAHAM were delighted to help be a part of the school’s history and enjoyed our time working together with the school and the children.

Dog Society Visit at York University

GRAHAM teamed up with Dog Society to bring dogs to the campus for students to meet. This helped reduce stress and had a positive impact for students who missed their dog. This is now a regularly weekly event at the campus and is a hit with the students.

WEAR IT PINK DAY 2022

Our staff raised £145 for Breast Cancer Care by wearing pink. Great effort from team GRAHAM.

CONSIDERATE CONSTRUCTORS SCHEME

The Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) is the national initiative set up in 1997 by the construction industry to improve its image. Construction sites and companies that register the Scheme are monitored against a Code of Considerate Practice, designed to encourage practice beyond statutory requirements.

GRAHAM have successfully attained best practice CCS Standards on the University of York project.
