MESSAGE FROM THE LORD MAYOR OF MELBOURNE
Melbourne is a thriving knowledge city and one of the world’s top destinations for higher education. I welcome the move by the Graduate Union to accept undergraduate students as residents in Graduate House for the first time in 2022. Students can be enrolled at any of Melbourne’s fantastic universities to access accommodation at Graduate House. The Graduate Union had its earliest beginnings in Collins Street in the heart of Melbourne in 1911 and has helped to build our city’s fantastic ‘Town and Gown’ connections; connecting students and academics with Melbourne business leaders. Melbourne is a city where you can live, study and play, all within walking distance. Historically, Graduate House has provided accommodation for graduates and visiting academics. I know that the liveability and offering of Graduate House will improve and become more dynamic through welcoming aspiring undergraduates. The City of Melbourne has always had a strong connection with Melbourne’s universities, and we are excited to see the educational and social benefits that can result from having undergraduates mixing and living with those who are now pursuing post-graduate study. This is a win-win move for everyone concerned. I congratulate Graduate Union on this initiative.
