Corkman Irish Pub re-emerges outside Graduate House
The demolished Corkman Irish Pub has re-emerged as an artwork at University Square, as part of a new public art commission from the Melbourne City Council. Situated just around the corner from where the pub once used to be, the artwork is in full view from the front of Graduate House. Many generations of students and residents in the Carlton area have enjoyed gathering at The Corkman Pub and it was one of the few remaining live music venues in the vicinity. Standing for 160 years (since 1856),The Corkman Irish Pub was completed during the gold rush and was a two-storey brick and bluestone building covered with a white render with it’s interiors and exteriors being altered from time to time by previous owners. ‘Distant Things Appear Suddenly Near’ is a new public art commission from the Melbourne City Council that recreates the façade of the Corkman Hotel. Created by Irish artist Sean Lynch, who says the artwork speaks directly to the infamous demolition of the building. ‘Distant Things Appear Suddenly Near’ emphasizes objects and understandings of space that have been marginalized in the continued growth of the modern city,” The public works will remain for the next 18 months on University Square in Carlton.
