Briefs... R-9 Project Bids Received

Hickory Threshing Event

Four bids have been received from companies wanting to serve as the general contractor for the Trenton R-9 construction project. Bids were opened on Thursday afternoon, Aug. 22, and, according to Project Manager Dennis Gutshall, Lawhon Construction of St. Joseph was the apparent low bidder. He noted that in addition to the main project work, there are seven alternate bids to be considered and school officials will be reviewing all bids before a contractor is selected during a special meeting of the R-9 Board of Education at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 28. Ellison-Auxier, which is the architect for the project, will be present at the meeting to make a recommendation to the board. Voters in April approved up to $7 million in bonds for construction of a new performing arts center as well as a new concession stand/restroom at C.F. Russell Stadium and renovation work in the high school/middle school media center and the Rissler Elementary School entrance area. The board, at a meeting last week, approved the sale of the bonds and is anticipating having over $7.7 million in its project fund for the work.

Old-time threshing, bailing and blacksmithing demonstrations will take place at the Hickory Threshing and Tractor Show on Saturday, Aug. 31. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Hickory and will also include an auto and tractor show. Threshing will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There is no cost to attend, however, persons are asked to bring lawn chairs for seating. Food and refreshments will be available. For more information, persons can contact David Key at 660-635-0613.

National Weather Service Mostly sunny through mid-week with highs in the lower 80s and lows in the mid-60s. The high at Trenton on Thursday, Aug. 22 was 82, Friday’s high was 83 and Saturday’s high was 79. Sunday’s high was 68 and the low was 64. A total of .58 of an inch of rain was recorded on Sunday. The high on Sunday at the Government Weather Station near Spickard was 66 and the low was 64 with .72 of an inch of rain recorded.

Labor Day Schedule With the Labor Day holiday falling on Monday, Sept. 2, the Republican-Times will be moving forward its publication date by one day. Instead of being published on its normal day of Tuesday, Sept. 3, the newspaper will be published on Wednesday, Sept. 4. News to be included in the Sept. 4 edition must be submitted to the R-T office no later than 8 a.m. on Tuesday. The Friday, Sept. 6 newspaper will be published as scheduled.

Road Issue On Ballot Voters in the Spickard Special Road District will go to the polls in April 2020 to determine if the entity will continue to exist or be dissolved. According to the Grundy County Clerk Betty Spickard, a petition has been presented to her with 63 verified signatures, more than the 50 that is required to put the issue on the ballot. If the issue passes, the district would be dissolved and all assets would be transfered to the county, with the county commission to decide how the streets within the district’s boundaries would be maintained. The city of Spickard or Franklin Township would take over the maintainance of roads and the 35-cent levy would continue to be collected until all outstanding financial obligations have been met. Mrs. Spickard said the reason the issue will not appear on a ballot until April 2020 is due to the cost of holding the election. If the issue was put on an earlier ballot that does not contain other issues, the road district would be required to pay the entire cost, rather than having it split with other entities that will have races or issues on the ballot for the municipal elections. The April 2020 election will take place on Tuesday, April 7.
