Briefs... R-9 Class Dismissal To allow students and staff to attend the MSHSAA Class 3 basketball games in Springfield, the Trenton R-9 School District has announced plans for an early-out on Thursday and no school on Friday. Classes will be dismissed at 12:50 at Rissler and 1:07 p.m. at TMS/THS. The THS girls will be playing Strafford at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday and will play a second game on Friday, depending on the outcome of Thursday’s match-up. Presale tickets for the tournament will be available in the district office, beginning today (Tuesday, noon to 4 p.m.; on Wednesday , 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and on Thursday, 8 a.m. to noon.
City Meetings Tonight The Trenton City Council and its finance committee will be holding meetings tonight (Tuesday) at city hall. The council will meet at 6 o’clock to discuss its annual contract with the Green Hills Animal Shelter. At 6:30, the finance committee will discuss the 2019-20 budgets for both the city and Trenton Municipal Utilities.
Park Board Meeting The Trenton Park Board will hold its regular monthly meeting at 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6 at city hall. Items on the announced agenda include discussion of the 201920 budget, a request from Doug Doughty of the Chillicothe Mudcats, discussion of playground equipment with representatives from the Trenton Rotary Club, the superintendent’s report and reports from the pool, grounds and facilities committees.
THS, TMS Search At the request of the Trenton R-9 School District, officers with the Trenton Police Department conducted a search for illegal narcotics at Trenton High School and Trenton Middle School on Feb. 28. According to Trenton Police Lt./Assistant Chief Larry Smith, nothing of evidentiary value was located during the search. The TPD was assisted by the Daviess County K-9 Unit. Anyone having information about drug activity or complaints about suspicious activities in their neighborhood are encouraged to contact the TPD at 359-5557.

The Pleasant View R-6 School held its annual science fair on Tuesday night, Feb. 26. TRENTON AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
The Grundy County Nursing Home District Board of Directors met on Feb. 26, hearing several reports. According to information provided by Sunnyview Nursing Home and Apartments Administrator Donita Youtsey, the board discussed continued work on energy projects involving the upgrade of the boiler to the new HVAC system as well as window replacement. Information was presented regarding a new lift van being purchased through the USDA loan/grant program. An executive session was also held to approve minutes from the Jan. 15 closed session. The next board meeting will be held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19 at the nursing home conference room.
Annual Banquet Is March 15
Business, Organization Honorees Two businesses and one organization will be among those honored by the Trenton Area Chamber of Commerce during the annual banquet on Friday, March 15. Sunnyview Nursing Home and Apartments and Modine Manufacturing have been selected by the chamber to receive the 2019 Business of the Year Award. while the Green Hills Recreation Association is the 2019 Organization of the Year. The three were selected to receive their awards based on nominations submitted by their fellow chamber members. They will be recognized, along with the Pillars of the Community - R.W. Keuhn and Phil Schlarb - at the banquet, which will be held in the Ketcham Community Center. Sunnyview Nursing Home and Apartments Sunnyview Nursing Home and Apartments was established in 1973 when voters of Grundy County approved a tax to fund a nursing home district. Sunnyview provides services to Grundy County residents in need of assisted living and nursing home care. Donita Youtsey is the current facility administrator. Sunnyview has always had a large presence in the community, giving back both as a business as well as giving employees the opportunity to volunteer and be involved in various service organizations. Among the areas in which Sunnyview staff are involved include delivery of Meals on Wheels on a weekly basis, sponsorship of youth through Green Hills Recreation Association, sponsorship of chamber breakfast and coffee events, participation in the Gooseberry Festival and Wright Memorial 5K/10K races, sponsorship/participation in the Polar Bear Plunge and Community Wellness Challenge, hosting community blood drives, providing a stop for the annual Chamber Poker Run, hosting community ice cream socials and entertainment, participation in Leadership Trenton and serving as a training site for North Central Missouri College nursing students, among others. And Sunnyview can always be counted on
to have a float in the Missouri Day Parade, a table at the Chamber Trick or Treat Night or provide a donation to the Festival of Trees fundraiser. According to the nomination form provided to the chamber, Sunnyview is one of Grundy County’s largest employers, with over 150 individuals working at the facility on a full-time or part-time basis. During the last three fiscal years, Sunnyview has paid over $7.4 million in salaries, including $5.8 million to individuals residing within the county. This money goes back into the community in the form of paid utilities, child care, groceries, healthcare and other products and services. And during the last three years, Sunnyview has spent over $1.6 million in operating funds within Grundy County for utilities, products and services. Sunnyview also provides referrals to many area businesses for staff, residents and their families, including health care, pharmacy, extended home care and medical equipment. Modine Manufacturing Modine Manufacturing recently celebrated 50 years as a business in the Trenton community, opening in 1968 in the industrial park on Industrial Drive in north Trenton. Beginning as a producer of copper and brass radiators, the business has expanded to become a large producer of heavy duty and medium duty aluminum radiators and charge air cooling modules for customers that include John Deere, IH, Freightliner, Caterpillar, AGCO, Case New Holland and General Motors. Volvo recently became a new customer, with Modine contracted to produce heavy duty service modules. In all, Modine does over $100 million in sales per year. The Trenton plant employs 218 persons, making it one of the largest employers in Trenton and Grundy County. There are 164 hourly, 27 salaried and 27 temporary employees and of that total, 22 have worked at the plant at least 20 years. Trenton native Miles Moore currently serves as the local plant manager. Modine employees, while working hard at their jobs, also find time to be
National Weather Service There’s a chance of snow on Wednesday night and Thursday, then partly cloudy on Friday. Highs will hit 41 on Friday and lows will linger in the single digits. The high at the Government Weather Station at Trenton on Feb. 28 was 30, Friday’s high was 34, and Saturday’s high was 26 with 1 inch of snow. Sunday’s high was 10, the low was -1. There was no report from the Government Weather Station near Spickard.
Chamber Banquet Reservations Reservations are now being accepted for the Trenton Area Chamber of Commerce annual banquet, to be held on March 15 at the Ketcham Community Center. Social hour, followed by the dinner and program, begins at 6 p.m. In addition to the Business of the Year, Organization of the Year and Pillars of the Community being recognized, there will be a live auction, a 50/50 drawing and the chance to win a suite at Kauffman Stadium to watch the Kansas City Royals play baseball this summer. Entertainment will feature a lip sync contest, where Trenton R-9 Superintendent Dan Wiebers will be defending his 2018 title against representatives from the Trenton Ambassadors and Farmers State Bank as well as the duo of Seth Cox and Phil Ray. Many are involved on various civic boards, committees and service organizations throughout the community. Modine has been represented for many years on the Chamber of Commerce Board, with Bob Pippen currently serving as a board member. Stephanie Burnfin represents Modine as a member of the chamber’s Ambassador organization. Green Hills Recreation Association Green Hills Recreation Association is one of the newest local organizations, created in 2017 to provide organized recreation opportunities for community youth. The mission of the association is “to provide the youth and adults of the Green Hills Area opportunities to participate in recreational activities.” A board of directors, comprised of volunteers from throughout the community, oversees operations of the organization, which currently provides recreation opportunities in the area of baseball/softball, basketball, soccer, disc golf and other sports that are currently in the development stage. In 2018, GHRA served 263 youth with the help of 56 adult coach volunteers. There are 194 athletes and 44 volunteers who participated in the recently-completed winter basketball program. In addition, approximately 20 high school- and college-age youth
serve as umpires and referees during the various competitions. The community has been very supportive of the GHRA, with over 37 businesses and organizations stepping up to sponsor teams and provide financial support. The sponsorships help keep participation costs down for local families while helping with operating expenses of the organization. “The Green Hills Recreation Association is a testament to what can be accomplished when community leaders join together to take action to address an identified need,” their nomination form stated. “Without the volunteers involved, sharing of their time and talents, area youth would have no choice but to pursue recreational opportunities outside of the community. Due to the success of the organization, area youth have a variety of recreational choices to take advantage of in their home community while brining all sectors of the community together to support the mission and goals of this outstanding organization.” Taya Ray is president of the board. Other officers are Nate Gamet, vice president; Cara McClellan, secretary; Leslie Woodard, treasurer; and Amy Dixon, Jason Foster, Tiffany Otto, Tammy Meeker, Adria Moore, Shannon Price and Craig Sager, board members.
