Briefs... Commission Meeting The Grundy County Commission will meet on Monday, rather than Tuesday, next week due to the Lincoln’s Birthday holiday. The courthouse will be closed on Tuesday. The commission may meet with Shannon Howe of Howe Company at 10 a.m. and will hold the annual meeting with township officials at noon at the Community Action Partnership of North Central Missouri. Lunch will be served.

Trenton R-9 Board Meeting The Trenton R-9 Board of Education will meet in regular session at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 12 at the district office. Items on the announced agenda include board of education election information, updates to the 2018-19 school calendar, a presentation by the salary and welfare committee, the 2019-20 school calendar, discussion of weighted courses, a staffing proposal for the elementary school, a building project update, discussion of the Annual Performance Report, a memorandum of understanding with the Grundy County Health Department regarding use of school district facilities, a vocational report, spring conferences, a safety report and principal reports. An executive session for personnel is also scheduled and will include administrator evaluatoins.

Coffee With A Cop

The Trenton Police Department will hold “Coffee with a Cop” on Tuesday, Feb. 12 in the North Central Missouri College Student Support Services office in Room 203 of Geyer Hall. The event will take place from 8 to 10 a.m. Citizens are invited to visit with members of the police department and ask questions about the department, special programs or law enforcement in general. The police department is also asking that local businesses or organizations wanting to host a “Coffee with a Cop” event to contact the TPD.

Among other activities held during the evening was recognition of the NCMC “Family of the Year.” The Eaton family from Mound City, pictured at right, received the honor. Local Store Closing In May The Shopko store at Trenton is among those being closed as part of the company’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings. The company announced on Wednesday, via its website, that the last day of operation for the Trenton store would be May 12 and it is one of the last stores to

be closed under the court-supervised financial restructuring process. The store at Gallatin will also be closed, with the last operating date listed as May 5. Stores at Carrollton and Albany had already been previously announced for closure, which was to take place on March 3 for Carrollton and April 8 at Albany.

In all, 251 stores are scheduled to be closed by the company, which is based in Green Bay, WI. There are 118 stores listed as staying open under the plan, along with four free-standing optical locations. Shopko located in Trenton in 1996 as a Pamida store. Shopko purchased Pamida in 2012.

Alumni Meeting Rescheduled A meeting of all Trenton High School alumni classes has been rescheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 17 at Royal Inn Pizza of Trenton. The meeting had been cancelled earlier due to inclement weather and alumni officers are hoping to have all classes represented at the annual meeting, especially those who will be honored classes for the upcoming Labor Day reunion. Class mailing lists will be distributed as well as tentative plans discussed for the 2019 alumni reunion. Persons with questions can contact alumni association president Dr. John Holcomb or secretary Steve Maxey.

Monitoring Bill Faces Opposition JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Missouri House on Wednesday advanced a bill to create a statewide monitoring program for prescription opioids, but efforts to make Missouri the final state to adopt such a system still face steep opposition. At issue is a bill by Sikeston Republican Rep. Holly Rehder to require pharmacists to log prescriptions into a database, which doctors and other pharmacists could check to see if patients are visiting multiple physicians or pharmacies to stock up on addictive drugs. Missouri is the only state without such a pro-

The Grundy County Extension Council election has been extended to Wednesday, Feb. 20. Grundy County residents can vote at the extension office, located in the basement of the Alexander Student Center on the North Central Missouri College campus, during regular office hours. Voting can also be done online at http://extension.missouri.edu/WebSite/CountyElection.aspx?BID=1359. Voters who have an issue with the link, can contact the extension office at 660-357-6580.

The ice-covered road was blamed for a one-vehicle accident on Wednesday afternoon one-half mile east of Melbourne. The Missouri State Highway Patrol said an SUV driven by Bailey Mehrhoff, 18, of New Hampton, was westbound on Highway 146 when it began skidding. The vehicle traveled off the north side of the road and overturned, coming to rest on the passenger side. Ms. Mehrhoff and a passenger, 19-year-old Emily Creasey of Bethany, received minor injuries and were taken to the Harrison County Community Hospital in Bethany for treatment. The vehicle was demolished.

National Weather Service Cold temperatures are expected to continue into the weekend with snow likely Sunday morning and again on Monday and Tuesday. The high on Monday, Feb. 4 was 34, Tuesday’s high was 22 and Wednesday’s high was 26. The overnight low on Wednesday was 15, with .27 of an inch of freezing precipitation recorded. There was no report available from the Government Weather Station near Spickard.
