Volunteers Honored At Breakfast

Trenton Alum Emphasizes Need To Care Volunteers with Bright Futures Trenton were assured that even the smallest gestures can make a big difference in the life of a child when they gathered to celebrate one year of the organization’s presence in Trenton. Sara Faubion Stipkovits, a 2000 graduate of Trenton High School, was the guest speaker for the event, held in the THS commons on Friday morning. Mrs. Stipkovits, who called herself the “poster child” for the idea that education is the key to success, went on to earn her bachelor’s degree from William Jewell College and her law degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law. She is currently an attorney with Peterson and Associates in Kansas City. Mrs. Stipkovits didn’t dwell on her accomplishments, however, choosing

to focus on those who helped her get there. She recalled being in third grade at Rissler Elementary School and the impact her teacher, Jane Cooksey, made on her. She recalled Mrs. Cooksey comforting her one morning after a tumultuous night by explaining that “sometimes adults make bad decisions.” Empathy, she said, has a powerful effect. As she grew older and became involved in Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, it was Dorothy Taul, Jayla Smith and Connie Hoffman, her advisors, who took her under their wings to help ensure she could reach her goals. Mrs. Stipkovits recalled school being her refuge, a place that was predictable and calm, where she found the routine to be soothing. She emphasized the importance of feeling that one belongs to the community and shared her longing to have a “Rissler Rascal” shirt in third grade and her disappointment when she didn’t get one. The shirt, to her, represented a sense of belonging. “Every kid wants to feel a part,” she said. “It changes how you see yourself. It gives you a sense of security.” Mrs. Stipkovits, who has been a generous supporter of Bright Futures Trenton from her home in Shawnee, KS, told volunteers to understand that their contributions are making a difference, most importantly because they let children know that people care about them and believe in them. “You ARE making a difference,” she said. “What you are doing will change the lives of the children in this
