Officials may wish to consider slightly re-jigging the date of Cheltenham’s Hunter Chase meeting in order that they avoid a clash with the Punchestown Festival where most of the top Irish hunters, together with horses such as Famous Clermont, were targeted. That said the evening provided some competitive racing.
Fier Jaguen (127) found the Cheltenham hill and the concession of 10lbs to the useful A Jet of Our Own (116) just beyond him in the opener but jumped well in the main and should be a major player in the shorter distance Hunter chase at Stratford in a few weeks’ time It took a career best effort from A Jet of Our Own to just get up on the post, no doubt helped by the ease in the ground given that most of his successes have come in races where the going has soft somewhere in the description.
What A Glance (122) stormed to an impressive success in the Junior Jumpers Chase His form figures belie some rather inconsistent performances and he started at double figure odds here but is clearly useful on his day.
All Night Parking (98) is finally getting his act together and followed up his recent course win when landing the Flete Park Restricted. Clearly in good order at present, he may be up to carrying a penalty in a backend Restricted.
A bumper crowd was present at Godstone and witnessed some promising performances Soldier Unknown (110) had made a successful British debut at Paxford albeit in a race that looked decidedly moderate at the time Weak in a market dominated by the Gina Ellis trained One Night Only, he nevertheless stepped up markedly, running on strongly through the latter part of the race to catch the Ed Vaughan ridden Ringsend John (108) at the last. He recorded a time figure almost a stone in advance of his form rating and is one to follow. There will be other opportunities also for the runner-up, who lost little in defeat.
Ed Vaughan did not leave the course empty handed however with an all the way success on the free going Bumpy Evans (104) in the Maiden. Bumpy Evans started a warm favourite here having previously finished a close second to Driveondonn in a fast run maiden at High Easter on Grand National day. The form of that race has a solid look to it with sixth placed Capparattin also winning on Bank Holiday Monday, and Bumpy Evans can follow up
26-year-old Ryan Alderman rode his first winner – in his first pointing season – on the useful One For Rosie last month. Unfortunately, he’s not going to be able to build on that debut success – this season at least – due to breaking his T6 vertebra in a gallops fall just a week after his maiden victory Ryan, who works for former leading jockey Jason Maguire, told Jake Exelby about the frustrations arising for the accident, how he became involved in racing, and… cowboys!
How are you feeling at the moment?
I’ve been better, to be honest. I’m quite uncomfortable as I have to wear a back brace for two weeks and it’ll be 4-8 weeks before I can get back on a horse
It happened when I was riding out at Charlie Longsdon’s – my Dad, Alan, was feed man there but was retiring so my sister Sinead and I went over. My horse’s bandage came undone, he stood on it… and somersaulted.
Annoyingly, I’d been offered three rides this month. My ambition this year was to have an outside ride, then an outside winner But I’ll 100% be back next season.
Tell me about yourself and your background in racing
I’m from Sussex originally My Dad was head lad for Gary Moore – he and Mum had met at the same yard, when John trained there. Dad rode for a while – mostly on the flat, but he had
a few spins over hurdles. As soon as I sat on a horse, I wanted to be a jockey, and I watched Champions on TV every chance I had.
I’m a third generation jockey – my grandad Ron rode before the war and Sinead was an apprentice.
My family all have flat racing physiques, but I’m built like a jump jockey and knew I’d struggle with my weight, so went into hunt service with the Crawley & Horsham, while riding out for local trainer Dan Steele I then moved to the Heythrop, which is when I started to get involved with racing yards.
I then went to Yorkshire, but Covid struck. I couldn’t hunt, so started riding out for Nicky Tinkler, then worked for him full-time I did breaking and schooling, had great fund and fell in love with pointing – Nicky had five or six at the time
Two years ago, I came back south to work for Nigel Twiston-Davies, then began to ride out for Jason and went full-time with him, at Birdlip near Cheltenham. Working for Jason has got me ready to ride in point-to-points –he’s helped me so much, for example in how to present a horse at a fence, and I wouldn’t be half the rider I am without him.
I planned to start race-riding last year, but wasn’t 100% happy with my position at a fence, so went to school for Fergal O’Brien
and Kim Bailey, when I thought, ‘I’m schooling babies for someone else – if I’m good enough to do this, I’m good enough to go pointing.’ I’d also schooled over the Cheltenham cross-country course and became confident enough to ride anything over fences.
Once upon a time, I wanted to go professional, but now I’m happy riding pointers, although I want to get my Cat A licence to ride under rules next season, then eventually my Cat B so I can race against professionals.
Which jockeys do you most admire?
It has to be Will Biddick – he’s the go-to pointing jockey and has won countless championships. He rides as well as any professional and you’d struggle to pick him out as an amateur amongst the pros.
Under rules, Jason, of course! Also Barry Geraghty and Paul Carberry – for the way they set a horse up for a fence. And I grew up watching videos of John Francome
Which other pointers and rules horses would you most like to ride?
Tara Storm is a lovely big old-fashioned type, well put together with stacks of ability and loves racing. Fier Jaguen is as game as you like and attacks his races head-on. He’s an awkward jumper, but always finds a way to get from A to B. Sprinter Sacre was my horse of a lifetime He used to jump effortlessly and was poetry in motion.
What are your favourite courses?
Garthorpe, obviously! It was my favourite even before my winner I went there with Nicky and Rosie won for Jason there last year (Clerk of the Course) Jim Culloty has done a great job, with good grass and good fences.
Also Parham. It was our local track growing up and I’d love to go back there to ride
What do you enjoy most about pointing?
You know that an older horse can have its day. At Didmarton, when I rode Rosie, 15-year-old Sametegal won the race – so you never know what you might be up against.
Everyone’s there to have fun and a good time, with the picnics in the back of the lorry
What would you do if you were in charge of the sport?
I’d allow novice riders to claim 5lb for up to ten
winners. Having us race against experienced jockeys teaches us more. Novice riders races can be helter-skelter!
And I’d have more conditions races for ownertrainers and trainer-jockeys. If you’ve only got one or two horses, it can be intimidating going up against the big boys and it gives you more chance of having a winner
What hobbies do you have outside racing?
I enjoy getting out on the bike with Dad… to burn of the weight I’ve put on in the pub the night before! We do a loop up to Stowon-the-Wold, past Diddly Squat (Jeremy Clarkson’s farm) and back to Enstone, where my parents live.
What about films, books and music?
Blazing Saddles always puts a smile on my face, even after the worst of days
I like to listen to audiobooks. Roy Keane’s autobiography was good. I’m not a football fan, but he’s a real character who knows what he’s talking about.
For music, it’s the Beatles. My favourite of theirs is A Day In The Life. I got into them through Dad – it’s the music I grew up with.
What’s the best present you’ve ever been given?
When I was five, I was given a full cowboy outfit, with saddle, by Mum and Dad.
What would you do if you weren’t involved with racing?
I’d probably still be a huntsman… or a cowboy. Being a cowboy on a ranch would be my dream holiday destination. People probably say I ride like one already!
Flete Park was seen at its best in the May sunshine with picnickers out in force enjoying a scenic view of the action from the hillside
The afternoon featured first winners for two young jockeys, and a memorable success for the grand 14-year-old Wotzizname
16-year-old Billy Broomfield, yet another pony racing graduate, had only ridden in a hurdle race and one point to point previously, but gave a cool exhibition in steering his mount Len Brennan home in the Veteran Horse Conditions event and he looks to have a bright future. The 10-year-old ex-chaser, a gift horse to owners Clive and Carlie Broomfield and Simon and Amanda Howell drew away from Clever des Assence round the home bend to score in cosy style “I was born in Yeovil but now live in Wincanton and ride out for Paul Nicholls,” said the promising young rider 21-year-old Whitcombe based Alice Procter, who combines her pointing riding career with training, was enjoying her first success in the training ranks.
20-year-old Rebekah Bell was having just her second ride as Ryans Fancy got the better of odds on favourite Punches Cross in the two and a half miles Conditions race Despite the best efforts of Will Biddick, Punches Cross could not get on terms with the winner in the home straight as the young rider pushed her mount clear Max Comley saddled Ryans Fancy to put himself level with Alan Hill and Josh Newman at the head of the trainers championship for the moment. The elated winning rider said, “I come from Lulworth, Dorset from a non horsey background. Carl Llewelyn has helped me a lot as my jockey coach.”
14-year-old Wotzizname has been a grand servant to the Cranmore based Gould family and the Diane Ward trained stayer ran on in the gamest fashion to repeat last year’s victory in the four miles Ladies’ race 20-yearold Megan Bevan was partnering her fifth point to point winner to add to a couple of hunter chase successes. “I work for Harry Fry and ride out for the Goulds in the afternoons.
We tried to retire Wotzizname two years ago but he was having none of it”, she smiled.
Callum Pritchard had All Night Parking handy throughout as the recent course winner overcame Welsh challenger Joyzain to win the Restricted. “We never really got into a jumping rhythm on the quicker ground. He wasn’t doing a stroke but picked up well when James King came at us”. Owner/trainer George Beilby reported, “I picked him out from a batch of six from George Doyle last summer and he might go hurdling now.”
Two promising young pointers won their respective Maiden races. 6-4 favourite Rue St Denis landed the three miles version under
Charlie Sprake. Owner/trainer Sam Loxton described his six-year-old as, “progressive but still so green. He needs to concentrate but is a good stayer and probably needs give in the ground.”
The two and a half miles Maiden went to fouryear-old Kingston Gent under Jake Bament on only his second racecourse appearance. “He settled lovely and we sat handy He will improve a lot,” said the rider wearing the familiar Dennis family colours. Trainer Tim Dennis revealed that he had purchased the grey, by St Leger winner Kingston Hill, cheaply as a foal in Ireland. “He was broken as a three-year-old, is easy to train and still growing”, remarked the Bude trainer

By Kirsty BoutflowerA typical Exmoor drizzle didn’t deter a decent-sized crowd from attending the Devon & Somerset Point to Point last Sunday at South Hill and they were treated to some good racing with winners for the two experienced jockeys contesting the Mens’ National title, James King and Will Biddick while young Billy Broomfield just starting out in his riding career, showed that the next generation has plenty of emerging talent.
A first winner from only his second start at Flete Park the day before, Billy Broomfield got the leg-up on veteran Shantou Flyer and steered him to an easy 15 length success in the Mixed Open. Always travelling well in company with his rivals, Billy sealed the win with a good jump over the open ditch to draw steadily further clear on the classy 14 year old who is only two years younger than his jockey After regular pilot Olive Nicholls felt she hadn’t recovered sufficiently due to her mount’s uncharacteristic run-out last weekend at Stafford Cross, father Paul contacted Sam Loxton to ask if he’d consider replacing her with Billy, who has worked in his yard for the past 8 months, following a background in Pony Club hunting and Pony Racing. Sam was at a loss to explain why Shantou Flyer had blotted his copybook last time although he felt the crowd had been close to the racing line and maybe something had caught his eye prompting him to miss the fence.
Anna Johnston had taken a Grass Roots Riders race at Stafford Cross on Walkin Out only last weekend for Les Jefford and with the mare coming out of that race so well, Les decided to go for a quick-fire return. Sent off the odds-on favourite the mare, who won a Hunter Chase last season, was a little keen in the early stages but had too much class for her opponents and breezed into the lead full of running with half a circuit to run. Held in very high regard by her trainer, he was in two minds as to whether to declare her on the ground as he felt it was too soft. In this form, she is one to follow especially on a quicker surface.
The Maiden race caused something of an upset when Mister Sky, fitted with first time blinkers, was fired into an early ten length lead by jockey Charlie Sprake. Will Biddick looked like he had ridden the perfect race on runner-up Jambo, but Mister Sky refused to capitulate and kept finding more when asked to run out a 3 length winner at the line A surprised trainer, Chris Barber said afterwards, “It really was last-chance saloon for him as he kept disappointing but the blinkers and the positive ride from Charlie have made a huge difference! I was thinking about
putting him on the transfer list but might have to re-think things a bit now!”
Dr Rhythm is a credit to his connections and duly obliged in the opening Members race when cruising home from Honest Opinion under Will Biddick. A winner of this race last year for owner Tina Dunsford, he is the most consistent of horses. Trainer Keith Cuming’s daughter Nicky, who was on hand to greet the winner said “He found the trip too far at Cothelstone and Will said didn’t really like the ground here but he never lets us down. He will get an entry at Holnicote next weekend and although generally we don’t run them back that quickly, he has won very easily here.”
Steel Express is another who had plenty left in the tank following his 15 length win in the Conditions race under Martin McIntyre for trainer Mike Vanstone who was on crutches following a hip operation last week. Linda Blackford who was deputising in the
paddock said afterwards “He’s an absolute legend of a horse who has won and been placed loads of times for owners Sue Quick, Nigel Mackenzie and Richard Dening. We bought him initially for Sue as a 3 year old at the Derby Sale and then the others joined her He’s always been a bit of character but we don’t mind on days like these!”
The sun finally came out for the finale, a Restricted race which went to Lavorante, ridden by James King for trainer Luke Price. Surprisingly not sent off favourite, James was always going easily on the winner and felt he improved as the race unfolded and the tempo quickened. James commented afterwards “He jumped really well and is a strong stayer The quicker they went the better he got.” Co-owned by Luke’s neighbour, farmer David Van Pouke (who has had 6 runners with Luke, 5 of which have won), Lavorante looks certain to follow up this win and should be kept on the right side of
SUNDAY 5TH MAY 2024
By midlandspointing.comAnother big May Bank Holiday crowd descended on Dingley for the Fernie’s pointto-point meeting on 5th May, where they enjoyed a seven-race card.
The Fernie Four-Miler has turned up some great finishes over the years, but this year’s renewal might be one of the most unusual. Four miles on any ground is a long race but in stiffening ground it takes a lot out of the legs but favourite Ragnar Lodbrok looked to have it all in hand coming to the last, then appeared to almost pull himself up John Dawson and Cool Desire must have been four or five lengths back at this point but went past and looked to have the race run in circumstances reminiscent of Hawkhurst’s last fence recalcitrance, only for Ragnar Lodbrok to rally and challenge for the win over the course of the very short run-in at Dingley. The result was a win by a head for Ragnar Lodbrok for Gerald Bailey and the Whiskey and Water Partnership, something which seemed impossible but came to pass, and one can’t help feeling sorry for the Dawson connections.
Earlier we started the day’s racing with the Members, Farmers and Subscribers Race which, despite including potential runners from the three local packs, ended up being a match race between The Unmentionable and Bothwell Bridge We are grateful to both sets of connections for making it a race as
there were options elsewhere on the card. As it transpired, odds-on favourite Bothwell Bridge (Ellie Caldwell), by Stowaway, out of Galileo mare Raise The Issue, was too strong for the challenge of The Unmentionable (Dale Peters) and won by five lengths, making it three wins and two seconds from their five starts. Connections tell me that they may look for a hunter chase next, possibly at Kelso at the end of May.
The Whiskey and Water Partnership were back in the frame again for the second race, the two and half mile maiden, but their Bless The Moon, which slightly surprisingly went off as joint favourite, was outclassed on the day by one of two Jack Teal-trained runners, Kdeux Saint Fray, which won comfortably to go one better than their second place at the Quorn meeting a few weeks ago jAck’s other runner Callmesusie was some way back in third of the three finishers.
The third race was a race for novice riders who started this season with fewer than five wins on their records to this point. Ethan Dawes, who works for Midlands trainer Dale Peters, won a very well-judged race here on Port of Mars for his first win after setting the pace and quickening away as the challengers caught him late on.
The Restricted race was won by Jack Andrews on his only ride of the day, Imperial Pride,
having taken the lead from Grangleclere Diego (Paddy Barlow) between the last two fences. Dale Peters recorded another second, this time on Cash or Card, the joint-favourite, which didn’t have the late pace to quicken and ended up a dozen lengths behind the winner
The Veterans race, next, was another attritional race with only two finishers from seven starters. This time it was Golan Fortune (Thomas McCain-Mitchell) who held off a spirited but unsuccessful rally by Dale Peters on Thunderstruck to win by two and a half lengths for Barry Denvir
The bookies had the final maiden race down as a head-to-head between Dale Peters’ Line Em Up and Wotnowcato for Jack Teal but both lost out to Ellie Callwood riding 6/1shot Karismatik who was tracked by Line Em Up to the last before the latter pulled up leaving the winner to go and win by a large margin from Wotnowcato and Atlantic Fleet who were a few lengths apart and the only remaining finishers.
Thank you to all those who supported the meeting. We hope you will return to Dingley for the last meeting of the Midlands season on the 25th May, for which the Fitzwilliam will be your hosts.
MONDAY 6TH MAY 2024
By Granville TaylorThe Stevenstone fixture at Vauterhill, High Bickington, was blessed with welcome Spring sunshine and a good crowd, but only small fields, being the third of the busy West Country fixtures schedule over the Bank Holiday weekend.
Humaniste has won his share of races for owner Keiran Johns and Stoodleigh trainer Danielle Kenealy and added the Mixed Open to his CV here.
It looked as though Josh Newman had timed his effort on Sixteen Letters to perfection at the penultimate, but the 12-year-old got very tired after jumping the last and Will Biddick seized the opportunity to edge past on Humaniste 75 yards from the line Humaniste has not always been straight forward, but has had enough talent to win over hurdles and on the flat plus five point to points. “He has been a saint for us and I think he enjoys it. He will probably go to Bratton Down,” remarked the trainer, who might even be tempted to return to the flat at Bath in the summer where he was placed last August.
Josh Newman soon earned compensation, firstly as a trainer and then in the saddle The Woolminstone handler sent out John Gardener’s mare Bang on Target to share the spoils with Jubertilee in the four-runner Grass Roots Conditions event as the duo
MONDAY 6TH MAY 2024
ByRussell SmithTeenage jockey Tom Hutsby was thrilled to notch his first double on Shoal Bay and Drakes Well in front of a big crowd at the Warwickshire Point-to-Point meeting at Mollington, near Banbury on Bank Holiday Monday.
Having taken his tally for the campaign to five on the pair, trained by his father Fred, at Wellesbourne, near Stratford the 16-year-old called time on race-riding for this term to retain his novice status and keep his allowance.
Setting out to make all the running on Shoal Bay in the opening Butler Sherborn Warwickshire Hunt Members, Subscribers & Farmers Race, Tom was joined by Captain Biggles and Gina Andrews at the third-last.
However, his mount pulled out more over the last two fences to win going away, with Harriet Richardson, on her first ride aboard Bawnmore third.
fought out a desperate neck and neck battle up the finishing straight. “She is an honest mare and has been in some competitive races,” remarked Kayley Woollacott. Bang on Target’s rider Rob David is a bit of a dead heat specialist, three of his 10 winners coming in this way
The betting market almost predicted a dead heat with the winner marginally preferred at 6-5 to runner up Jubertilee’s SP of 5-4. Charlotte Summersby was partnering her second winner of the season and ninth of her career including two under rules saying “It was perfect for him. We got an easy lead and he jumped well although he was going a bit left all the time and I was glad that Rob was on my outer.”
Five of the six runners in the Mares Maiden went to the second last with a chance, but Newman’s mount Did Ja Ever soon asserted and was comfortably ahead reaching the judge This six-year-old mare runs in the colours of the 10 strong Blackmore Racing Club and will probably go hurdling now. The National trainer’s championship is hotting up and this
winner helped to add to Josh Newman’s bid.
Pileon appreciated a drop in class to take the Hunt race after a hard fought dual with Joey Steel. Natalie Parker’s mount got the upper hand on the run-in. “He idles a bit on his own and I was glad that Fly (Martin McIntyre) came up to me along the top,” said the winning rider, edging her way towards a half century of pointing winners. Natalie’s sister Laura Jones trains Pileon for owner Julia Batho, who looked after the Yeats gelding when with Philip Hobbs and is now travelling head girl for Paul Nicholls.
Only three turned out for the concluding Maiden which saw Deborah Treneer’s Treacy’s Jim cruise clear of Talkin’ Tennessee as the favourite Bud Success came to a halt with a circuit to go “We bought him from Jimmy Frost to replace Static Jack who we lost at Buckfastleigh last year”, said the owner whose son Michael was in the saddle The jockey rides out for Jamie Snowden and faces his final assessment to qualify as a chartered surveyor at Reading shortly

(left, black andThe Hutsbys made it a quickfire double with the young rider again excelling on Drakes Well in the HFN Landscapes Conditions Race (Level 2) over 2m 4f
Sending his mount into the lead on the final circuit, Tom drove the 11-year-old out to score by a neck from I’m Spellbound and Andrews, with Calidad and Peter Mason three-quarters of a length back in third.
Tom said: “It is amazing to have my first double especially on home ground. That is me done for the season. I want to keep my claim. I will focus on my GCSEs now and after that I am going to college to get my farm licence.”
Proud dad Fred, who is also clerk of the course, added: “We want to keep him as a novice for next season. It is brilliant for him to have a double in front of his home crowd.”
Drakes Well, who could now go for the handicap hunters’ chase at Stratford on May 31, is owned by Fred’s brother-in-law, Stephen Corbett, who said: “Tom is my nephew. It was a great ride, and it makes it a real family affair.”
Shoal Bay was completing a hat-trick after winning at Ampton and Lockinge for owner Marcine Marshall. She said: “He hunts with the Warwickshire with my son-in-law, Adam Botham, who is a showjumper It means an awful lot to win this race because my grandson, Henry Marshall, is the second whipper-in.”
James King kept up his charge towards the men’s championship with a double on Pluto’s Gate and Grace A Vous Enki.
Stepping into partner Pluto’s Gate in the Tattersalls Cheltenham Four and Five Years Old Maiden Young Horse Series Race with Hertfordshire-based trainer-rider Bradley Gibbs at Eyton-on-Severn, King powered the five-year-old home by a head from Soldier’s Leap and Jack Andrews.
The son of Cloudings, owned by Andrew Leyshon, was dismounted after the line in the 2m 4f contest before being loaded into a horsebox with the rider reporting his mount to be a ‘bit sore’.
King finished the day 12 winners ahead of Will Biddick after completing his double on Grace A Vous Enki in the Ray Randerson Carpets Mixed Open.
Taking charge on the final circuit, the Nickie Sheppard-trained eight-year-old galloped on
relentlessly to hold off Drop Him In and Gina Andrews by four lengths for his sixth win of the season and go one clear in the champion horse standings.
The gelding, owned by Joan and Clive Hitchings, was regaining the winning thread after finishing third in the Lady Dudley Cup last month, and his latest success put Sheppard three clear in the race to be the leading trainer with six to 14 horses.
The Eastnor handler said: “We are delighted to see him back in the winner’s enclosure. James gets on very well with him and has ridden him to all his wins.”
King commented: “He has been an absolute star and a pleasure to be part of He has achieved more than we expected. All credit to the Hitchings and the Sheppards because he was in the last chance saloon.”
The late Keagan Kirkby was in the thoughts of trainer Robert Varnham and jockey Seb Mead after Imperial Esprit ran out an easy winner of the F N Pile & Sons PPORA Club Members Conditions Race (Level 1), for Veteran and Novice Riders.
Kirkby, who died in February aged 25 while riding in a race at Charing, won twice on the 10-year-old, with the plan to go for the PPORA Novice Riders Championship Final at Edgcote on May 19
“We ran here because of Keagan,” explained Varnham, who trains the gelding at Bramley, near Guildford. “We wanted to be the top horse in the PPORA race and now we want to do it under his name He won the first points on him.”
Mead, who was partnering the gelding for the first time for owners the Gunshot Paddocks Racing Club, consisting of Dave Young, Chris Knotek, Clive Penfold, Sally Marks, Alan Wilson and Andy Gallagher, took up the running after the third last, before storming home five lengths ahead of Premier d’Troice and James Earnshaw.
Mead, 22, works for David Phelan, and was riding his second winner He said: “I knew Keagan very well. He was the last person to win on the horse It means a lot to ride the horse and he will always be in our memory.”
The Sir James Shuckburgh Bt. Restricted Race was run in a rainstorm, but trainer Dawn Ball was all smiles after Well P gave her a first winner for nine years in game fashion.
Ellie Holder made much of the running on the seven-year-old before Chabichou Dupoitou struck the front after the third-last, but Well P rallied in great style to take the honours by two-and-three-quarter lengths from King’s mount.
Ball, who rents 22 boxes at Paul Webber’s nearby Cropredy Lawn stables, was enjoying her first success since Gotoyourplay scored at Brampton Bryan in 2015.
She said: “He has been knocking on the door for a win. He was bought off a photo and he came from Ireland. He had Its On The Line back in fourth when he won his maiden race (for Mary Ellen Doyle at Ballycrystal in February 2022).”
Ball owns the gelding as part of the Paddy Pea Club, with her mother, Joyce Ball, James Stride and Mick and Harriet Curran, and she added: “I have been praying for rain and it came at the right time He is only seven, so there is a lot ahead of us. It is exciting.”
Holder commented: “He got outpaced coming down the hill. I knew he was a strong stayer and he saw it out better than the others.”
The downpour made the ground very testing for the closing Walnut Hill PPORA Club Members Maiden Conditions Race.
It held no fears for Capparattin, though, as Charlie Case made all the running on the nine-year-old, trained by Francesca Poste at Ettington, near Stratford, to grind out a threeand-a-half length victory over Whatchagotder and Toby McCain-Mitchell - the only other finisher from the seven starters.
Owners the Bumble Bee Racing Partnership, headed by Jane Burton and made up of her daughters, Lucy and Annabel, Trudy Gleed, Mark Styles and Mark Pugh, were buzzing after the win.
Jane said: “We trained this horse last season after getting him from the late John O’Neill. He bred and owned him and named him after his farm in Ireland. I think John would have been really excited.”
Charlie Poste, representing his wife who was at Eyton-on-Severn where Power of The Sea made it an across-the-card double for the yard, said: “He was sixth at High Easter with a hood on. We took it off and I think that has made the difference. Charlie Case gave him a brilliant ride.”
MONDAY 6TH MAY 2024
By Rory AlkinThe Bank Holiday crowd were treated to a wonderful day’s racing in the in warm sunshine Seventy-five horses ran on excellent ground and both Maidens were divided on the day. Phil Rowley trained a treble courtesy of Forest Chimes in the Mixed Open, Subtle Fortune in the Intermediate and Perryville in the first division of the three-mile Maiden. Rowley’s jockey Darren Andrews rode the first two of them to record a double
In the Mixed Open over two-and-a-half miles, Andrews on Forest Chimes took it up three out and soon went clear to beat the fastfinishing Gabrial the Great by eight lengths.
The Intermediate was a much closer call where Gillian Anderson on Quick Charge took the lead two out from Bestfriend Barnaby closely pursued by Subtle Fortune who had to work hard to take the initiative close home, winning by a neck. The six-year-old mare, who had looked useful when winning her Maiden at Bangor in March, will now go to Doncaster Sales.
In the first division of the Maiden, Clara Brewitt brought Perryville to challenge Freestyle Fighter at the second last and held on well to win by three-quarters of a length. The winning seven-year-old gelding had useful hurdles form for Mel Rowley and was a first winner for the twenty-one-yearold jockey who works for the stable The owner Mrs Bibbey was unable to see her winner as she was on a flight to France as the race took place.
The first division of the four- and five-yearold Maiden was an exciting contest where Sean O’Connor came with a well-timed run on Travis Wheatley to beat Zac Baker on Glancing Hill by three-parts of a length with Bradley Gibbs on Jardin Carre a neck back in third. The winner is owned by Orchard Stables and is trained by Eamonn O’Donnabhain, who said that they had been waiting for better ground to run the horse The four-year-old gelding was bought for twelve thousand at the Land Rover sales last year and will also be going to the Doncaster Sales.
Guy Sankey had Great Valley close to the lead for most of the trip and his jumping proved decisive, running out a two-and-ahalf lengths winner from Bradley Gibbs on Maxiboy Dagrostis. The four-year-old winner had run promisingly in juvenile hurdles for Dan Skelton and was acquired privately be David Futter of Yorton Stud for the Three O’Clock Fox Partnership The winner got the biggest cheer of the day as the syndicate is made up of the jockey and a few of the meeting’s organisers. It was also a first training success for Neil Gittins who trains locally
The Conditions Race for eight-year-olds and upwards was another exciting affair, where Huw Edwards on The Creadan Rogue opened up a good lead but idled in the straight and just held on by a neck from Freddie Keightley on the fifteen-year-old veteran Sametegal.
Aimee Jones took it up on Runwithetide four out in the PPORA Veterans and Novice Riders Race and ran on well to beat the fastfinishing Ballyadam Destiny by four lengths. Kelly Morgan who trained the winner said that after her victory at Alnwick earlier in the season, she had got bogged down in heavy ground at Dalton Park but was much better suited to the faster conditions here.
There was another good finish in the threemile Maiden where Zac Baker on Power of the Sea got the better of the spoils and beat Tommie O’Brien on Pethers Run by half a length. The five-year-old winner was bought by owner/trainer Francesca Poste two years ago at the Land Rover sales, and it will now go back to one of the forthcoming sales.
Tommie O’Brien gained compensation in the concluding Members, where he came with a strong run two out to wear down Huw Edwards on Reikers Island and win by three lengths, for trainer Heidi Brookshaw.

The Point-to-Point Racing Company, a joint venture owned 50% by PPA, produces a number of publications aimed to assist owner and trainers in selecting a suitable race, gauging the strength or racing characteristics of the opposition and providing an historical record of past races.
The Official Loose-Leaf Point-to-Point Form Book provides all you need in terms of form.
Professionally produced by our team of on-course correspondents, each weekly supplement provides full results with in-depth comments-in-running for every Point-to-Point and Hunter Chase and builds up into a comprehensive and indispensable reference tool- delivered weekly to your door.
Each race also contains an official performance rating for the placed horses together with a pace (speed) figure allowing you to quickly determine the level of the race and whether it was truly run whilst a comprehensive index carries details of each horse’s Official Point-to-Point rating If you want to know everything about every horse it’s all in the Loose-Leaf!
