ON THE CLOCK

On average time figures normally span a band no more than fourteen pounds below or above a horse’s collaterally derived form assessment. Figures slower often come in small field, cat and mouse events or as the result of a ‘pace collapse’ following a frantic early gallop. Faster figures are normally the domain of lightly raced, unexposed types - difficult to rate accurately on form due to lack of data. Occasionally however, perhaps once or twice a season, we can get an anomaly. The published time for the second race at Vauterhill on May 5th was 6 minutes 12.6 seconds, six seconds faster than any other race on the card and one that resulted in the winner, My Girl Katie, achieving a figure (107) some 18 pounds higher than her form assessment. Yet My Girl Katie is far from unexposed, having recently raced without success in over twenty races under Rules and commanding an official rating of just 91. Additionally, second placed Share a Moment – beaten just three lengths – has been running consistently but to no higher level than the low 80’s. Of course, it was a day of small fields and it’s eminently possible that all the other races on the card were relatively very slowly run, but third placed Conor’s Gift (beaten 23 lengths) had run well in a soundly run Restricted at Flete Park the time before and a line through him suggests a figure over 100. It’s not however the purpose of this column to look to set a hierarchy of performance, chiseled into stone for future posterity, but, instead, to attempt to pinpoint horses that may have fallen slightly under the radar and offer value for future betting interest. The actual merit of My Girl Katie’s performance will no doubt reveal itself over time but for the moment she remains one to follow – at least to the end of his season.

More straightforward to assess is Jeu Gagnant’s (100) win at Upcott Cross. Les Jefford’s six year old had shown a deal of promise on his first run at Flete Park and was always going well here, held up in mid division before storming away in the home straight for a facile 30 lengths success. He should have little difficulty following up.

There are five meetings this weekend and Imperial Esprit can return to winning ways at Peper Harow where Luke Price’s Hogan also has prospects in the maiden. She is the Enemy may take the Restricted at Hexham, Caspers Court can continue his winning ways at Bratton Down – where course specialist Ninth Wave also has chances if re-appearing after unluckily slipping up at Cothelstone mid-week. Mumbo Jumbo is on a retrieving mission at Edgecote and is favoured in both races in which he is entered, and Trojan du Berlais is a tentative selection for the Restricted. Racing promises to be fairly dire at Tabley but Steady the Ship can take the Lord Daresbury Classic.
