Jeux d’Eau’s rise to greatness over the past two seasons reached its highest point when demolishing the field in the Pointtopoint.co.uk Champion hunter-chase at Stratford on Friday evening. The seven-year-old French-bred gelding was given a never say die ride by Huw Edwards who was enjoying this as the middle leg of a tremendous treble on the night.

Trained in Shropshire by Edward’s partner Laura Richardson Jeux d’Eau hasn’t put a foot wrong since his maiden win on his second start at Tabley in May 2023. A horse that has gone through the grades within the British point-to-point field. So far, in a ten race point career he has never finished outside the first three home and following his latest win under rules; the future looks bright.

Richardson, one of seven girls has non-horsey parents but learned to ride at Penny and Russel Teague’s who lived a mile up the road. Having left school aged 16 a move to Newmarket to learn the racing trade beckoned. Having fallen in love with racing Richardson soon moved to Ireland and obtained her apprentice license whilst working for Michael Halford (ironically Halford’s son Tommy had a ride in the race Jeux d’Eau won on Friday) Unfortunately a nasty car accident meant Richardson never had her first ride and spent a month in hospital. She says: “I was due to ride on the Monday and had the accident on the Friday.” On returning to England a job with David Loder was taken and she tells me: “I had a few rides pointing for David, then I went to work for Alistair Ralph where I was senior staff really and I did most of the travelling.

It was during this time that Richardson met Edwards. I ask her how long they have been together; she laughs and tells me: “If you ask Huw he would say six months but it’s actually six years.”

Since their meeting they have established themselves into a daily routine which works. “We ride out for Joe O’Shea in the mornings and do the horses at home in the afternoons, that’s how we have developed. I used to ride out for Hugo Palmer, and I have kept that association because over the summer months when the pointers are out I go there in the mornings but we always have something to keep us busy; breakers and ones to sell. It is great to have the variation and a change of scenery.”

Richardson explains further: “Huw’s father Simon has a permit, we have a couple to run in the summer under-rules. Huw and I have the pointers at his Dad’s on the farm and we are lucky to have the whole farm to ride on, a dirt gallop and schooling fences.”

I ask Richardson to explain more of her race-riding and if she wants to pursue that further: “I did it because I really wanted to have that insight. I wanted to be able to relate to my jockey and to fully understand what being out there is like. How could I instruct or criticise if I hadn’t done it myself? Now, I get so much pleasure out of watching Huw.”

auctions and having broken him a deal was struck and Richardson and Edwards bought him. Richardson tells me: “He was always pretty cool, when we break them in here, they have to do it all on their own because often it is just Huw or I with no lead horse. It is a way we have found to work, teach them independence from day one and we don’t look back. I remember the first time we took him to the gallop, he just did it, no fuss, no greenness just good attitude and racehorse mentality.”

A patient journey to the racecourse followed with ‘Bruce’ not making his debut until May 2023 at Eyton-on-Severn. He finished second that day and Richardson says: “We hadn’t got him fully tuned up and he had done a lot of his work alone. It was two-and-a-half miles that day and we felt he would be better over further. We still owned him at this point, David Walter Heys who owns him now has been an owner and friend of Huw’s family forever. He approached us and wanted to buy him after that run, but we wanted him to win before he did! Although we knew he was talented we needed to make sure for David’s sake. Knowing he would be staying in the yard I wanted to ensure David’s money was spent correctly.”

From that first admirable and honest decision to ensure he was a good enough for Walter Heys to purchase him, Richardson’s handling of him has been superior. She explains to me: “We didn’t run him until he was five because he was so weak at four. He did everything in that four-year-old year, he had numerous racecourse schools and gallops and we could have easily ran him but we just felt it wasn’t the right thing to do. We could have easily ruined the rest of his career by running him then.” She adds: “David is the most wonderful owner, he leaves me to it, he is welcome to the yard anytime and we invite him to come watch on the gallops every time. He has one other horse with us, Ideal Du Tabert, who has won twice this season and is a lovely one for the future.” Richardson is transparent about the days that haven’t been ‘Bruce’s’ best runs. “He isn’t the best traveller, luckily there are lots of tracks near us but if you look closely some of his runs where we have gone miles north, he hasn’t ran quite as well. Then there was Cheltenham last year, on the back

of a busy season it was just a step too far and only two weeks after winning the Lady Dudley Cup. We kind of had to go, you know, one of those why not situations but it was too much at the end of the season. To his credit he ran well, finishing fifth, and it gave him valuable experience, but they went no gallop then sprinted away. This season, he ran well at Warwick to be third and then we went to Leicester. It was too soon, and he was fourth. I have learnt he needs time between his races.”

A formula that has brought reward, his last three runs have all been wins. A win in a point at Bangor in March, followed by regaining his Lady Dudley Cup trophy before having nearly six weeks before winning on Friday.

The future targets are big ones and why not. Richardson says: “We have to consider the Cheltenham Foxhunters in March, he deserves to make that step. He wouldn’t be seen in February though now I know he best fresh.”

At home day to day ‘Bruce’s’ training regime is kept simple. “I probably lunge him twice a week, he loose schools, he loves that and it keeps him happy. He is great to ride but can differ day to day! One day he is keen and wild with his tail in the air and really wows you, the next day he needs kicking along! He is funny but a real professional. He stresses at home, like when the farrier turns up he sweats, he has his own way about him.” She tells me.

I finish by asking Richardson of her own goals and she says: “It would be brilliant to just do our horses at home so therefore not going off riding out in the mornings.” She continues: “It’s about getting the right balance. I am a control freak and want to do it all myself.” So how many is the magic number? “The right amount to sustain Huw and I would be perfect, but we are a way off that just yet.”

There is no doubt Richardson is a very good trainer, clearly ambitious and a perfectionist but also embracing the ability to listen to her horses. The saying ‘A horse will tell you everything if you are willing to listen’ is in this case about right.

Results at Stratford went much as expected with the first four races going to the top-rated horse. We learned little from Barton Snow’s (120) easy success in the first other than he clearly did not relish being in front so soon – but his high cruising speed suggests this may not be so much of a problem at Aintree next year - his purported target- if he can be held onto until the elbow.

Jeux D’Eau (118) presumably has his sights now set on Cheltenham. An all the way victory here took his winning tally to eight in just twelve starts and having also won two Lady Dudley Cups is clearly well suited by a left handed circuit. Only Cheltenham’s undulations may find him out.

The evening’s highlight, The Horse and Hound Cup, showed Gracchus de Balme (128) can be effective over longer distances than the Aintree Foxhunters - at least on a flat track. He is for sale however and this was probably his career highlight.

So, the sun finally went down on what has been another challenging season, one where a five week drought tested both Clerks of the Course and Keepers. Many keepers pulled up stumps in early April and there were some sobering lessons to be learnt by courses who failed or couldn’t water sufficiently.

Nevertheless, there was still some interesting racing over the months with the emergence of horses such as Music Drive and Inchidaly Robin, some progressive horses who started the season as maidens e.g. Kilfilum Woods and Clondaw Drake and the highly promising debutante Outmaster.

The PPA have reviewed the race programme and suggested (the proposals are currently in out for consultation) some changes. One of most interesting is the creation of ‘Reserved Ratings Races’ which precludes horses previously rated 110 or over under Rules from entering. Designed to restrict talented ex-Rules horses from mopping up, for what it’s worth I would suggest that the condition is modified to preclude horses with a winning official rating of 110 or over. Otherwise, you would restrict horses such as Mumbo Jumbo (120) and Ideal du Tabert (117) who both started the season as maidens, which I don’t think is the intention.
