The Irish have once again dominated proceedings at Prestbury Park this year and have a strong hand in the Hunters Gold Cup – The St James Place Festival Challenge Cup – which follows immediately after the Festival showpiece itself.
Ferns Lock and Its On the Line currently head the market but it would be no surprise, given his high profile ownership, to see the latter sent off favourite. Winner of all three starts this season, Its on Line as just a six-year-old, chased home Premier Magic in last year’s renewal. He is also well proven on a testing surface. Yet he is not without his idiosyncrasies- inclined to idle when hitting the front and being a little on the small side. He fell at Aintree last season and has looked far from fluent on occasions since. As short as 11/4 at present, he is worth opposing.
There is little between Its on the Line and Ferns Lock on the book and they flashed past the post together at Down Royal in December. However, Ferns Lock now re-opposes on 7lb better terms for just a half-length beating and with a career strike rate of 80% certainly looks the stronger contender. He won in a canter last time out and has a string of wide margin victories to his credit- many on a soft surface. If there is a chink in his armour it is his stamina as he slowed dramatically in the closing stages at Down Royal and did the same at Fairyhouse last season. The Cheltenham hill will not be in his favour, but he ticks most other boxes.
Premier Magic looks sure to put in a bold bid to become the first back-to-back winner of this race since Pachu de Polder in 2017/2018. He was big outsider last year, despite possessing an almost exemplary profile, and has remained unbeaten since, including a further win over course and distance at the Hunter Chase evening meeting in May. He has been given a similar campaign to last season with just two outings between the flags (relatively untroubled to land both) and will arrive a fresh horse. He is another who is well proven with give underfoot and, currently priced at 13/2, still represents value each way.
Billaway is similarly priced. A regular in this event over the past three years, winning in 2022, he has however recently given signs of beginning to have a mind of his own. Leading early last time, he then proceeded to drop himself right out before consenting to run on again on the turn for home – eventually finishing with a such a rattle as to almost catch Its on The Line on the post. The race was basically over by then however and the bare result probably flatters Billaway. With the Cheltenham race likely to be run at a fair pace he can ill afford giving away ground this time, and this trait coupled with his well-documented jumping flaws, means we can pass him over on this occasion.
D’Jango and From the Heart do not look good enough but there will be support for Sine Nominee, Time Leader and Quintin’s Man and even the evergreen Shantou Flyer. All offer some chance of finishing in the money although ultimately may be found wanting.
Sine Nominee attempts to give connections a first win in this contest since Last Option in 2002. She is a likeable mare with a good turn of foot, but her record indicates she much better suited by a flatter track and, although running creditably, it’s worth noting that he has been beaten on both previous outings here.
In contrast Quintin’s Man is a course and distance winner. An imposing son of Goodwood Cup winner Schiaparelli (GER), stamina is very much his strong suit and the shorter distance of the Walrus was not in his favour last time out. Nevertheless he still ran a fair race, holding every chance before finding himself a little outpaced on the run in. Equally at home on soft or a faster surface, Quintin’s Man looks sure to be doing all his best work at the finish but appeals as one for whom there will be other days.
Shantou Flyer finished an honourable third last year and should give Olive Nicholls another good spin. However, he is 14 years old now and although he has won a couple of minor points this season, was well behind in a hunter chase at Taunton. That was over 2miles 5 furlongs though and this trip will suit far better. Inclined to race lazily and only do just enough, it is difficult to determine whether he has deteriorated at all but at twice the age of the favourites we can pass him by.
Time Leader is very much one for who the ground will be key and would be well be suited by drying ground conditions. He posted one of the fastest speed figures of the point-to-point season when winning at the Portman in November and quickened impressively to beat the useful Kaproyale at Hereford in late January. In between however he had run deplorably in the slop at Chaddesley and has only ever been successful on ground no worse than Good to Soft. His best effort last year was when finishing fifth in the Aintree Foxhunters and this would appear the long-term target, but he is a strong traveller when right and could still give each way supporters a run for their money.
Of all those at bigger odds however it’s the enigma that is Samcro who stands out. Once described as the ‘second coming’, he initially lived up to the hype with a comfortable win in the Ballymore Novices Hurdle at the Festival back in 2018 and followed up by winning the Marsh Chase back there in 2020. He’s had a chequered career since then however, only rediscovering the winning thread when returned to points to points – where it has all started all so brightly for him in 2016. A winner of four of his last five outings, its frankly a little difficult to weigh up the merits of his recent victories but he did take apart Lough Derg Spirit (who later ran Ferns Lock to just four lengths) before spending another year on the sidelines prior to an easy return victory in a Tinahely Open in November. It would be an emotional moment were he to turn the clock back and run well here and one thing is for certain, his flamboyant owner won’t be short for words!
Conclusion: Although Britain pulled off a clean sweep of last season’s championship Hunters events, this year the St James Place Festival Challenge looks to be heading over the Irish Sea. Ferns Lock looks a class act and with a strong pace almost guaranteed, this customary strong traveller will hopefully be able to conserve enough energy to cope with the demands of the stiff uphill climb to the finish. He’s value enough at 3/1. Premier Magic should make a good fist of things in his bid to retain his crown and looks each way value at 13/2 whilst Samcro appeals as a ‘lucky saver’.
The father and son Vaughan combo had made a lightening start to the season back in November with three winners at Great Trethew but despite several placed runners since winners had been few and far to come by since. They put this right at the weekend however. Not afraid to travel far and wide they sent out three consecutive winners at both ends of the country, two at Friars Haugh in Scotland and one at Charing in Kent. Two of these, Designer Destiny (91) and Jean Genie (104) posted figures that suggest more successes are in offing.
Jean Genie was not winning out of turn having been placed on numerous occasions over hurdles, chases and latterly points and indeed this effort is hard to contextualise in terms of recent form. However, a time figure some 9lbs higher than his form rating suggests he can upgrade successfully to Restricted company - though it’s worth noting that his best form (rated as high as 119) has come with give in the ground.
Stable companion Designer Destiny is a far less exposed type but had been kept relatively busy over the past three months. He was not winning out of turn at Charing, having been lightly raced and appearing to be something of a shadow of his former self since starting out life with Harry Whittington in 2019. He won easily from a small field here however – well suited by the shorter trip.
The Poste yard is another who has hit top form recently and their Trevada (108) won the Restricted at the Pytchley with Woodland in good style. With the well regarded Artiste D’Ainay well beaten back in third, this was probably an above average Restricted, despite the small turnout, and Travada, a 110 rated hurdler when with Oliver Sherwood, should win again.
Finally, a shout out for the one-eyed Ninth Wave (116). He was six times beaten favourite in his younger days but his victory on his season’s return at Cothelstone was his fourth in a row and although he finished alone it was to his credit that he was still able to replicate his season’s best of last season- this despite not sporting his normal visor. No doubt further success awaits at his favourite Devon venue, Bratton Down.

South Wales trainer Tim Vaughan’s decision to make the 375-mile journey from Cowbridge to Kelso was made worthwhile by the victories of Jean Genie and Ocojohn in the hands of son Ed at Saturday’s Buccleuch meeting which had 54 runners on a six race card.
After being placed in 16 of 31 career starts since making his making his debut over hurdles at Auteuil in March 2019, nobody could begrudge Jean Genie his moment of glory in the 3m RBC/Brewin Dolphin Maiden Conditions Race. Eased into contention on the final circuit, the eight-year-old headed long-time leader Bentley Road (Joe Wright) two out before drawing clear to score by five lengths.
Ocojohn was always close up in the Davidson Land Services Restricted Race and, after taking it up from pace-setting Burtown (James King) four out, it was one-way traffic in the closing stages as he cruised home twenty five lengths ahead of the promising Eagles Rock (John Dawson).
Vaughan Jnr, a 16-year-old A-level student in Cardiff and former pony racing champion on both sides of the Irish Sea, said: ‘’He was suited by the strong gallop set by Burtown and hasn’t looked back since getting off the mark in a first-time hood at Milbourne St Andrew two starts ago.’’
The double took his seasonal tally to eight and extended his lead in the National Men’s Novice Riders Championship. The teenager’s weekend got even better when he partnered Designer Destiny to victory in the opening 2m4f Maiden Race at Charing on Sunday.
Champion jockey James King steered Cheltenham raider Jay Bee Whiskey to a fifth win in a row in the 2m4f Turcan Connell Mixed Open Race. Sent clear half-a-mile from home, the progressive nine-year-old kept on strongly to beat Kingrullah (Laura Fenwick) by eight lengths.
Swindon-based owner Kevin Crawford said: ‘’Getting his neck and back ailments cured has proved to be the best money I’ve ever spent on a horse and I’m sure we’ll have plenty more fun with him this season.’’
The unfancied Any Job Will Do caused an upset in the 2m4f Saffery Maiden Race under a well judged front-running ride from Joe Wright and just had enough left in the tank to repel a late challenge from Trust Me Nate (John Dawson) by a length. This was Wright’s 75th career winner, comprising 63 between the flags and 12 under Rules.
Winning owner/trainer Jackie Stephen said: ‘’He lost his way under Rules but has now got his confidence back and was suited by the shorter trip on better ground.’’
Ask Cory made it three wins from four starts since joining Briony Ewart’s Langholm yard when following up last month’s course success in the 3m George Crawford Legacy Trust Novice Riders Mixed Open Race. Produced with a perfectly timed challenge by owner/rider Chloe McHattie to lead at the last, the eleven-year-old had to dig deep to hold off Bintheredonethat (Eloise JusticeVose) and Wild Romance (Shay Halton) in a blanket finish and secure a neck verdict. His next outings are likely to be Corbridge (April 1) and Hexham (May 18).
A change of scenery and drop in class has worked the oracle with ex-Irish hurdler/ chaser Nick Lost who joined James Cookson’s Morpeth yard four months ago. Given a peach of a ride by daughter Natasha, the
evergreen twelve-year-old galloped his six rivals into submission in the concluding Kelso & Musselburgh Racecourses NPPA Conditions Race to end a long losing sequence stretching back to July 2018. Meeting every fence on a perfect stride, he was in command at the top of the hill after five out and cruised home twelve lengths ahead of Oscar Wilde (Amy Coltherd).
The main action was preceded by 2 pony races sponsored by Browns. Cheshire raider Just A Little Dot (Daniel Harrison) repeated last month’s course win in the 138cm Open contest, with the minor placings filled by Mohammed Ali (Cara Wilson) and Kitty (Pippa Gibbon). The 148cm Open contest was won by I’m Making It (Cara Tuke) from Lucky June (Tara Kane) and Dino Royale (Robyn Coulson).
The 4 Northern Area fixtures to survive the weather so far this season have attracted a total of 199 runners, with a healthy average of 7.65 per race.
The next Northern Area action takes place at Overton Farm, Crossford on Saturday 23rd March where the Lanarkshire & Renfrewshire fixture has record prize-money of £7,500 on offer with an additional £250 to the leading owner. 5 races have a £1,000 prize fund, while both Mixed Open races have a £1,250 prize fund.
A little encouragement from dad Tim Vaughan as Jean Genie and son Ed Vaughan reach the line Photo: Grace BeresfordThis season has been hard hit with abandonments and with so many meetings struggling to run due to the ongoing daily deluges, it was pleasing to see the Quantock survive and those that managed to navigate the rather inconvenient road closure a mile from the course, were treated to some good racing. Highlights of the day were a first ever winner for trainer/ jockey Rupert Wilks, a first training success of Ollie Bowd and an impressive success for Goleirihem and Izzie Marshall.
Beyond Redemption clearly didn’t live up to his name for Rupert Wilks when he comfortably took what ended up to be the final race of the day. A very emotional jockey who had been friends with the late Keagan Kirkby dedicated the win to his friend whom he had worked with at Paul Nicholls’, before moving to work for Harry Derham who had been his mentor at Ditcheat. Travelling well throughout, the winner jumped the second last upsides Young Wolf before being driven clear to record a pleasing 9 length victory under his 20 year old jockey. Rupert explained that Harry had suggested he buy the horse for pointing after his form tailed off following a win at Wincanton. His parents, Peckhambased Tim and Miranda, then stepped in and purchased him choosing their bright red, yellow and black colours as homage to the Peckham coat of arms. Rupert also thanked Sam Loxton, Natalie Parker and Joe Wroe for their help with training and riding advice.
Another to celebrate their first winner as a trainer was Ollie Bowd whose Imperial Pride took the Mares Maiden under Will Biddick. With the favourite, Crackerjack Queen unseating four out, it was left to the winner and Dancinnthemoonlite to fight out the closest finish of the day. Both mares come out of the race with huge credit and the pair were well clear of the third. Will explained to owners, Andy Chater, David Doolittle and Mark Burgess that he thought although she coped well with the ground, she would improve again on a better surface but had been game and determined in the finish. Ollie who works for David Dennis, trains the mare, who is his only horse, in his lunch hour and acquired her in October. The plan
SUNDAY 09 MARCH 2024
By Kirsty Boutflowerwas to go for the Mares Maiden Final at Woodford in April.
Teresa Clark has most local races on her training CV but the Members Race here has always eluded her. With all four entries standing their ground, any doubts over the ground for Ninth Wave soon evaporated when under a sensible ride from jockey Callum Pritchard, he came home in isolation, the others having cried enough. For owners Pete and Kathy Musgrave too this was their first time winning the race and for Kathy a very emotional occasion having hunted with the Quantock as a child. She dedicated the win to her late father, George Hooper, who she said would have been very proud of the result.
Family were very much part of Coup de Pinceau’s win in the Mixed Open when he comfortably saw off odds-on favourite Dr Rhythm over the extended trip under jockey George Hiscock who also trains the horse. It was a welcome winner for George whose last winner as a jockey came at Stratford nearly two years ago and it was this horse who gave him one of his best winning moments when taking the four mile Hunter Chase at Cheltenham at 100-1 for his former trainer Syd Hosie. George acquired
the horse in August for the Famers, Farriers, Fibre Club who are made up of friends and family. George said, “He just kept galloping despite the ground and obviously gets the trip really well. He didn’t really handle the track at Milborne last time and the aim is to go back for the Four Miler at Cheltenham.”
The sight of Alan Hill choosing to come here instead of his more local Didmarton, should have been taken as a hint that his Goleirihem was well fancied and the 25 length victory proved as much. With jockey Izzie Marshall opting to stay wide to avoid the cut up ground, Goleirihem cruised into the lead over the ditch and decisively put distance between himself and the runner-up, Killard Point. Izzie remarked “He was awesome!! Absolutely loved being on the better ground on the outside and when I asked him to pick up, he just flew!” Connections thought he would probably go for another Restricted and it certainly looks well within his capabilities judged on this performance.
The final race, a Maiden, had to be abandoned due to a medical incident which was non-racing related. It meant that there were no ambulances available to cover the race itself and thus sadly organisers were forced to end the day early.
SUNDAY 10 MARCH 2024
By Nico MorganIt is a great testament to the team at Guilsborough that our meeting was able to go ahead and we are very grateful to Clerk of the Course Robert Johnson and his team on the ground for keeping the course safe to race.
Heavy ground inevitably put some runners off and sadly the first race of the day - the Goffs-sponsored Maiden for four and fiveyear-old horses - saw no declarations and the race was declared void. In addition to the heavy going, races like this are for store horses aimed at sales and trainers feel it does not benefit the horse to win races with small numbers of runners.
Ragnar Lodbrok is an impressive pointer which has won eight out of his eleven starts for owner Gerald Bailey and friends. Now 9, he went off as odds-on favourite for the Berrys Mixed Open, the feature race of the day, and won comfortably under Alex Chadwick, to complete a back-to-back double. This was a tactical race, as the time of over eight minutes
Saturday 09 March 2024
By Andrew KingThe Bradley Gibbs team limbered up for a big week at Cheltenham with his stable star Premier Magic attempting a repeat success in the St James’s Place Festival Challenge Cup on Friday following a short-priced double courtesy of victories for Crocodile Lounge and Fier Jaguen.
After opening at 4-7, Crocodile Lounge was well backed into 1-3 favourite for the Restricted contest and had no problems in justifying that support when making much of the running and seeing off Daisy Yeats by 15 lengths.
Co-owner Adrian Simpson commented: “He is only five years old and that was just his fourth race in total. We hope he is a nice horse for the future and, with that in mind, we will play it softly, softly with him this term and take it step by step.”
Gibbs employed similar tactics aboard Fier Jaguen in the Mixed Open and the pair eventually pulled clear of their only serious rival, Tara Storm, from the home bend for a relatively comfortable verdict.
However, Gibbs expressed himself a shade disappointed by the result, saying: “I am not sure
will indicate, with the trio of runners being led by Salty Boy for some distance before a mistake saw jockey Tom Hutsby unseated. Who’s In The Box (James King) then took over but they couldn’t challenge in the final stages and finished about seven lengths behind the winner.
It was a good result for Christian and Geri Horner in the second race, the Billings Finance Maiden, when their Maxine Filby-trained Look At Mee made all to win unchallenged in the experienced hands of Jack Andrews. The only other finisher of five runners was Bellshazzar, ridden by trained by Fred Hutsby and ridden by Tom Hutsby.
The third race of the day was the Restricted race, kindly sponsored by Mr & Mrs LatillaCampbell. This produced the first win of a double on the day for Alex Chadwick riding Trevada, a first win between the flags for the eight-year-old by Kayf Tara trained by Francesca Poste. Second place, eight lengths behind, went to the 12/1 shot Well P, ridden by Ellie Callwood and trained by Dawn Ball. Third to the evens-favourite Artiste d’Ainay, ridden by Jack Andrews for Tom Ellis.
Six runners started the PPORA Club Conditions race, sponsored by The Hawthorns, Northampton, but Muckamore (Harry Arkwright) was an early faller and several pulled up in the final stages leaving just the favourite Champagne Glory (Jack Andrews), trained by Stuart Morris) to challenge the Kelly Morgan-trained Bothwell Bridge (Ellie Callwood). This was very much an all-Midlands affair which was won easily in the end by Bothwell Bridge for the Fernie Dingley Syndicate, where we may see this nine-year-old next.
Finally a conditions race for older horses of eight years old and upwards brought the card to a close, with eight runners starting this contest, kindly sponsored by Sibbertoft Manor. This one also produced one of the best finishes of the day as one horse trained by Dale Peters challenged another ridden by him. The battle of the trainers was won by Francesca Poste, though, as Dale piloted the favourite In Our Dreams to a three-length victory over 3/1-shot Port of Mars, ridden in only his second race by Ethan Dawes. Kilpin, ridden and trained by George Edgedale, was a distance back in third.
Fier Jaguen was at his very best there for whatever reason but he has won well and there are not really any solid plans for him in the short term.”
Whereas Gibbs maybe approaching the twilight of his career in the saddle, the future can only beckon for teenager Freddie Keighley after he partnered his first ever winner when Sametegal took the honours in the Riders Conditions race.
Keighley,16, the son of licenced trainer Martin, was understandably over the moon with the success and said: “ My father told me to bounce the horse and make the running and the plan worked to perfection
“I spent a week’s work experience at Paul Nicholls’s yard recently which was an eye-opener and when I left he kindly gave me Sametegal as a leaving gift - so here we are and I have to thank Mr Nicholls for this win.”
Ihandaya made the best possible start for new trainer Nicky Sheppard in the Conditions contest with a spring-heeled round of jumping that resulted in a authoritative call over What A Glance.
Owner Clive Hitchings said: “He looked fantastic in the paddock beforehand and transferred those looks to the course where Natalie has given him a great ride and I couldn’t be more pleased.
“I understand the winning time was very good so that bodes well but, as far as any future plans maybe concerned, I will leave all that to Nicky and her team.”
The Hannah Lewis-trained Queenhill finally managed to get her head in front after coming out on top following a prolonged duel with favourite Money From America in the closing stages of the concluding Maiden.
It proved a poignant moment for owner Mervyn Jones as he also bred the mare and he confided: “I have to admit it’s an emotional moment for small owner/breeders like myself as I bred her, raced her and have to be very patient with her.
“She has always shown us there was a race in her and it was a matter of finding the right one. The door finally opened there but from where I was watching it was difficult to tell whether she had got up, so the judge’s announcement proved a welcome relief.”
Fama Et Gloria proved the answer to the Members’ race despite trying to throw it away when idling badly in front at the final fence. He rallied on the run-in to see off the challenge of Miltown Bridge by three lengths.
SUNDAY 10 MARCH 2024
By Rory AlkinThe meeting took place in gloomy wet conditions on heavy ground, with the going becoming very testing throughout the afternoon. The last fence was omitted for all races due to the state of the ground.
The highlights of the day were a double for Trainer Phil Rowley and his jockey Darren Andrews in the opening two contests on Bear Market and Subtle Fortune; and a double for Henry Crow aboard Encounter A Giant and Perfect Attitude.
In the opening four and five-year-old flat race over two miles, Phil Rowley’s Ballymena Boy ridden by Murray Dodd took up the running after half a mile and led into the straight, where he was passed by his stablemate Bear Market in the final furlong, with the latter running on well to win by four lengths. The fiveyear-old gelding was acquired by former jockey Jerry McGrath at Goffs two years ago for owner George Barlow who had previously enjoyed success with his halfbrother Follow The Bear, trained by Nicky Henderson. George’s wife Anne said that the gelding had been outstanding at dressage prior to going into training, but they now have an exciting racehorse in the making.
In the five-year-old and upwards Maiden, Andrews on Subtle Fortune made progress throughout the final circuit and took it up a the second last from Iconic Rock and went clear to win by seventeen lengths. The winning six-year-old mare is owned by the trainer Phil Rowley and was bred by Juliet Minton.
In the Mixed Open, Iola Sankey on Dounikos led into the straight and was passed by Henry Crow on Encounter A Giant, who stayed on well to win by three-and-a-half lengths. The Tom Britten trained twelve-year-old likes it here and made it three from three at the course, having also won the same race last year, before going on to win the prestigious Lady Dudley Cup. Crow was fined £75 by the Stewards for careless riding, due to interference with the runner-up after the final fence.
The second leg of Crow’s riding double came in the Conditions Race (Level 3) aboard Perfect Attitude, where he took it up on the final circuit and battled back to beat Toby McCain-Mitchell on Chenery, by three quarters of a length, having been passed momentarily after the last. The eight-year-old was bought by the trainer Tim Garton for his family at the Goffs Sales last August for £12,000 from Gordon Elliott, having previously won over hurdles.
Immy Robinson led on Golden Tobouggan for most of the Ladies Conditions (Level 2) over two and a half miles and was headed by Aimee Jones on Shang Tang before the last, who stayed on to beat The Creadan Rogue by one and a half lengths. The winning ten-year-old, trained by Heidi Brookshaw, had a couple of good hunter chase runs earlier this season and enjoyed this drop in class. The owner Alison Sargeant bought the Former Emma Lavelle trained winning chaser at Tattersall last July for a bargain £2,000 on a telephone bid, without viewing the horse.
Huw Edwards on Jeux d’Eau was prominent throughout and took it up before three out in the Restricted and was a convincing winner staying on to beat Money Spinner by seven lengths. The six-year-old had won its Maiden at Tabley last season and is trained by his partner Laura Richardson and owned by her and David Heys.
The Hunt held a charity race over a mile before racing with twelve runners. It was won by Rachael Lytham on Lucky Lover Boy from the Greenall/Guerriero stable, where she is travelling head lass.
Flat Race Ballymena Boy (left, white and red), and Bear Market at BangorBritain’s most valuable point-to-point takes place on Saturday week . . . but not at a venue in England.
The Scottish track of Overton in Lanarkshire is putting up prize money which the Planner states is worth £7,500, narrowly ahead of the £7,250 which Flete Park o ered at a fixture last season. The Worcestershire meeting at Chaddesley Corbett on April 20 can boast the most valuable single race, the £2,400 Lady Dudley Cup with prize money down to eighth place, but the total value of the meeting is £4,150.
Explaining the background to Overton’s lucrative fixture, which is being run in the name of the Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire & Eglinton, course owner Wassels Young says: “It all starts from promoting the meeting, and we are fairly good at the hospitality side of the job. We have some very good and loyal sponsors and we’ve managed to squeeze a bit more out of them, but we do give them value for money.
“We wine and dine them and their clients for the day, we provide them with a race video and they get a good day out.”
Those sponsors include local builder Steve Thompson of STSC Construction and Gouldings Garden Centre, who Young says are long-standing backers of point-to-point racing at Overton.
He adds: “I have three point-to-pointers of my own, so I’m not looking for more competition on the day, but it is good for the crowd to have horses and jockeys, and by putting up such good prize money I am hoping we attract runners from far and wide.”
Overton may currently be Britain’s most northern venue, but it is easily accessed from the motorway and has avoided much of the rain which has fallen in recent months. The fences are out on the course, and, given a recent spate of abandoned or postponed fixtures, a precautionary entry might be prudent.
The seven-race card o ers prize money to fourth place, there is a £250 bonus for the leading owner and a prize for the top rider, plus two pony races with prizes for all. Entry for the public costs £15 to include a race card, and there are still places in the hospitality marquee where diners pay £47.50 a head.
