Photo: Tim HoltThe Pegasus Club Race is one of the most historic races in the point-to-point calendar –held at the VWH point-to-point at Siddington near Cirencester on Saturday 23rd March 2024 and once the preserve of judges and barristers, it is now more open to entries.
The founding objective of The Pegasus Club was to stage an annual point-to-point race to be ridden by members of one of the four Inns of Court, to which every barrister must belong.
The race was first run on 10th April 1895 at Coombe, near Wimbledon, and has been held at various venues since then including – from 2009 – Siddington.
The original condition that only barristers can ride has been removed and The Pegasus Club Race is now open to any qualified rider. However, to maintain the history of the Club, all horses must run in the name of a barrister. To encourage entries, an arrangement has again
been made to enable owners and keepers who are not barristers, to enter their horse in the race. Connections who are not members of the Club are allowed to run their horse, provided they lease it for the day to a barrister - the horse would the run in the barrister’s name and colours. The Club would be happy to introduce owners and keepers to barristers to facilitate this arrangement.
The race has the highest prize money on the card of £750. Any prize money would be awarded to the actual owner of the winning and placed horses, while the winning barrister would hold The Pegasus Club Challenge Cup for a year, with a Ladies Cup for the first female rider past the post.
The Pegasus Club Race is a Level 1 Conditions Race, there are no penalties, and it offers an opportunity to win one of the last surviving races of its kind.
The Pegasus Club would like to encourage owners and keepers to run in the race. For more information and to be put in touch with barristers looking to lease a horse for the day, please contact the Club point-to-point secretary,
Chris Smyth

The Club will have a prime car parking area, where picnic food and drink will be available, and connections of runners are welcome to join them on the day.

There are few more reliable riders to have on your side in Hunter Chases than Natalie Parker (41% strike rate) and she gave a rejuvenated Espoir de Guye (126) an assured front running ride to take the notable scalp of Famous Clermont at Wincanton. An established two-and-a-half-mile performer, rated as high as 150 in his prime, Espoir de Guye looks an obvious candidate for the Aintree Foxhunters – especially if the ground were to remain on the soft to heavy side.
We have become accustomed to the odd round of shoddy jumping from Famous Clermont (128) but on this occasion a juddering error at the last proved crucial as up to that point he had travelled comfortably just behind before moving up almost e ortlessly to challenge. Interestingly his jumping seems far better when racing left-handed and he too remains on course for the Aintree feature. Time may show this was no easy task conceding weight to the former classy winner.
Only three point-to-point meetings survived the weather but there were some eye-catching performances, most notably at Charm Park. Camdonian (119) is no stranger to readers of this column and took his record to five wins from six career starts when running out an impressive winner of the opening Conditions race. Travelling powerfully behind the front running Benefaktor, he quickened impressively when given the o ce on the turn for home and, despite a couple of sketchy jumps in the straight (which might have stemmed from his overall exuberance at hitting the front), stayed on strongly to the line. Camdonian is ready to step up to Open company now and appeals as a likely sort for the John Corbett at Stratford at the end of the season.
Miami Magic (112) and the expensive Ellis debutante Daytime Dreaming (94) dominated both the market and the closing stages of the Go s Young Horse Maiden. The former, an imposing son of Ascot Gold Cup winner Leading Light, had already had a couple of outings in Irish points and put this experience to good use with a solid front running performance. Quickening readily when challenged two from home, he won cosily and reportedly has the Aintree bumper as a long-term target. On the clock this was the fastest maiden of the season and Miami Magic is clearly an exciting prospect. So too the runner-up, who moved very much like the potential winner on the run to home only to be outpaced and weaken in the straight. A year younger than the winner, he will progress as he strengthens and may also benefit from a faster surface.
Lou Marvelous (106), took the later non-weight-for-age maiden in similar impressive fashion. Absent for almost three seasons following a highly promising second place in a bumper at Perth, he moved smoothly through the field on the last circuit before hitting the front on the turn for home and easily holding the game, if rather one -paced, Greater Glory (104) up the run-in. If he can be kept sound further success awaits Lou Marvelous while Greater Glory continues to be a willing partner for Rosie Howarth and should atone in the near future. Both horses recorded speed figures some 11lbs in advance of their respective form ratings.
The field sizes were far smaller at Ampton and Charlton Horethorne and only two finished in the maiden at the first named. Nevertheless, the winner Ask Carla (106) clocked a useful figure, one slightly in advance of his run at Horseheath in December, when holding o the heavily backed Luke Price representative Lavorante (104). Ask Carla looks good enough to land an East Anglian Restricted.
A sound round of jumping is half, if not more, the battle when it comes to winning but that’s something the aptly named runner up in the Restricted clearly has yet to master. A better round of jumping may have seen Thatshalfthebattle (100) prevail over Whitsand Bay (102) in what was nevertheless the most truly run race of the meeting.
Point-to-pointing and racing came together in the Somerset village of Ditcheat for the funeral of Keagan Kirkby.
The 25-year-old amateur rider, who died last month while riding in a race at Charing in Kent, worked for champion trainer Paul Nicholls, who was among a group that walked slowly behind the coffin from the yard to St Mary Magdalene Church. The procession was led by Kirkby’s favourite horse Highland Hunter, who behaved impeccably despite the many hundreds of people thronging the lane outside the church, many wearing blue and white, the colours of his local football club Bristol Rovers.
In a timely tribute, Highland Hunter, who was ridden daily by Kirkby when trained by Nicholls, won at Newbury on Saturday for his current trainer Fergal O’Brien. Paddy Brennan, who was in the saddle for that win, was among a number of professional jockeys who attended the funeral, alongside Nicholls’ team of Harry Cobden, Bryony Frost and Lorcan Williams.
Countless riders and trainers from the point-to-point world joined the congregation, including eight-time champion Will Biddick and Surrey-trainer Rob Varnham and his wife Lucie, who supplied Kirkby with four of his six winners. They were joined by Caroline Bailey and Peter Wright, chair and chief executive respectively of the Pointto-Point Authority.
The service opened with the theme from Champions and was followed by a recording of James Blunt’s Bonfire Heart, a favourite song of Kirkby and his girlfriend Emily
Burge. There followed several readings, starting with the thoughts of his mother Zoe, whose words were read by The Reverend Canon Graham Hendy.
She revealed that as a child Kirkby had sat himself on the arm of a chair and ridden winners, using a skipping rope for reins, while watching televised racing. Kauto Star and Denman were inspirational to him, and he stated from an early age that he would work for Nicholls. Keen on all sports, he played cricket for his home town of Midsomer Norton and was passionate about Bristol Rovers.
Early riding lessons at a local trekking centre were followed by work experience with the team at Ditcheat, a spell at the British Racing School, employment with Jeremy Scott and then Biddick before returning to Nicholls’ yard in August 2019.
Highland Hunter, led by Kirkby’s friend Scott Sainsbury, leads the funeral processionIn an interview with the Pointing Pointers podcast Kirkby had talked openly about being a carer for his mum and had said: “It’s made me who I am today.”
That element of kindness was conveyed in a heartfelt reading by Flo Willis, travelling head groom and representing the many staff at Manor Farm Stables. She said: “Our Keagan, our ‘Ki-Ki’, was the guy to speak to if you were having a bad day. He was so enthusiastic, and when he rode in a race and we’d say ‘How did you get on at the weekend?’ he’d give each ride a ten-minute debrief. We’ve all heard the statistics about Bristol Rovers going back to 1992.
“He’d do anything to help anyone at any time and he was a good listener. His relationship with Highland Hunter was very special, and despite violations on the gallops when the horse ran off with him, he was so proud of the horse.
“Keagan has taken a piece of our hearts with him and we’ll always miss and above all remember him.”
Nicholls said it had been a difficult two or three weeks for everyone involved with the yard, and in a reading said: “Whenever a team loses a key player is it felt, and Keagan was the ultimate team player. His enthusiasm was infectious, he was always on time, he worked hard and he was a pleasure to have around.”
In April last year Rob Varnham rang Nicholls asking if his daughter Olive could ride for him at Aldington in Kent. Nicholls said: “No, she’s riding at another meeting, but I’ve got a good lad in the yard who rides well and is available. I’ll get him to call you. I rang Keagan, told him to ring Rob, and a couple of hours later I spoke to him again and said ‘Have you rung him yet?” Keagan said to me, ‘Come off it Boss, you’re taking the piss!”
Having been convinced the offer was genuine Kirkby rang Varnham and the following day rode his first double, topping it up with a walkover to complete a treble. One leg was gained on the Hannah Grissell-trained Westtara, who won the maiden race, and who Kirkby was riding when his tragic accident occurred.
Nicholls added that Kirkby’s nomination for a Godolphin Stud & Stable Staff award was proof of how far he had come in his chosen career, and when referring to the bond between him and Highland Hunter he said: “He was run away with every day, but was always telling people how brilliantly he rode the horse.”
He added: “The number of people here today is a tribute to Keagan. It was a pleasure to know him . . . rest in peace Keagan.”

The weather gods did their level best to disrupt the annual running of the Blackmore and Sparkford Vale point to point by first of all raining for much of the lead up to the meeting and then on Saturday morning producing enough snow to need a further inspection to be held before the meeting could go ahead. However, the weather relented and on the day of the meeting it was a pleasant early spring day, and a large crowd enjoyed the races where Will Biddick secured a hat trick of winning rides, Josh Newman had a training double and Olive Nicholls had a winning return to race riding after suffering an injury at Larkhill in January.
Will and Josh shared the riding spoils in the Tattersalls Jockey Club sponsored 4- and 5-year-old Maiden race when the judge could not separate Rip Wheeler and Mount Mason after a battle between them over the final two fences and declared a dead heat. Both had shown promise on their debuts and were fancied to win the race.
Rip Wheeler, a four year old gelding by Walk In The Park, was bought at the Goffs Land Rover Sales for 62K Euros. Trained by Eamonn O’Donnabhain at a separate yard close to Tom Lacey’s National Hunt stables alongside four other horses he is likely to next be seen at a forthcoming sale.
A similar future awaits Mount Mason, a fiveyear-old son of Sandmason, bought as a three-year-old in May 2022 at the Tattersalls Store Sale for 12K Euros for Shannon Lodge Racing. Kayley Woollacott, on behalf of Josh explained that’ he was too weak to run last season’ and ‘has benefited from another year to strengthen up.’ He ran well on his debut at Garthorpe and connections had been hopeful of a good run.
Will secured his second winner of the day aboard his father-in-law Rupert Nuttall’s Comonilean in the Manor Farm Partnership sponsored Open Maiden race. Always prominent he held off the strong challenge of Prophesea ridden by Callum Pritchard, after the last fence and won by a head. Trained and bred by Rupert on his farm out of the mare Annie Fleetwood,
who won three chases and a Hurdle, this was a popular winner for all of the local connections. A full sister to Lassue who Rupert sold last year, it is unlikely that this mare will follow the same route as she is the last of the family line. Explaining her name Rupert advised that ‘her stable name is Eileen and I spent some time coming up with a name that incorporated her stable name’ There is no truth that Rupert is a fan of Dexy’s Midnight Runners!
Olive had her first ride back when walking over on Shantou Flyer in the Keagan Kirkby Memorial Members race but was able to secure another winner on the same horse when making all in the Paul Barber Mixed Open race later in the afternoon. Jumping well for Olive the veteran was too good for the mare Singapore Saga and his next outing is likely to be in the Cheltenham Foxhunters where Olive finished third last season. Proud father Paul Nicholls expressed his delight at picking up both the Trophy in memory of John Farthing in the Members Race and the Paul Barber Memorial Trophy which had originally been presented to Paul after the success of See More Business in the Charlie Hall Chase in 2000.
Will secured the final leg of his treble aboard the classy Mr Glass in the Alec Jarrett Conditions Race. Previously owned by John Dance he had suffered a leg injury on his last run under Rules when trained by Paul Nicholls and needed a lengthy break
from racing. Bought by Paul for Olive to ride this season he had previously won a Mixed Open at Chipley for Will and although he only beat Pileon ridden by Natalie Parker, by a length and a half he did not look in danger of defeat. Boasting a third behind Constitution Hill in the 2022 Tolworth Hurdle he took some time to adapt to the move away from Ditcheat to the different training regime at Will’s yard but has now settled into the new routine. Ridden at home in draw reins he may be aimed next at either a Ladies Open or a Hunter Chase for Olive and he looks an exciting prospect for her for the rest of the season.
Josh trained the winner of the final race
The Church House Investments sponsored Restricted race when Whitsand Bay ridden by Darren Andrews, held off the challenge of Thatshalfthebattle. Previously owned and trained by Chris Wald who had bought the gelding as an unbroken four old but finding his role as Assistant Trainer to Joe Tizzard to be too time consuming to give the eight-year-old a proper training routine, he indicated that he was for sale. Acquired by Josh and Kayley Woollacott in February for long term supporters John and Sonia Gardener, this was the first time his new owners had seen their purchase and they were delighted with his success. Kayley added that ‘he had finished behind Hearts Corner at Chipley and as we rate that gelding highly, we thought that Whitsand Bay would be a good purchase’.
There was relief shared by the organisers, officials and enthusiasts as this Suffolk fixture at Ampton was able to go ahead as scheduled.
Many hours of hard work and endeavour had taken place on the lead up to this meeting and the ultimate reward was racing taking place on ground conditions officially described, as ‘ good to soft/ soft in places.’ Remedial work had been required on a false patch of ground on the bend into the uphill finish, which had proved successful and a course inspection was passed 24 hours in advance of the first race taking place.
The wet winter has caused havoc all over the country, with meetings being initially abandoned, some postponed and some unable to be re-arranged for this season. Here, in East Anglia we have been fortunate to-date to fulfil our original fixture list with six of the ten scheduled meetings having already been staged.
This Suffolk meeting may have only seen 30 horses declared but provided plenty of action to produce victories for owners, trainers and jockeys with the resultant background stories complementing their successes.
It was another successful Ampton meeting for Timworth-based trainer Andrew Pennock, whose stables are adjacent to the course, saddling two winners in Ask Carla and Trojan Du Berlais. Both horses were ridden with confidence by Charlie Marshall to bring his tally for the season to six victories. Ask Carla took up the running in the Maiden race after the early front-runner, Illico De Nuit had fallen at the downhill fence on the second circuit. With their rivals looking to make progress up the stiff Ampton finish, Ask Carla responded to Marshall’s urgings to have 1 ½ lengths to spare over the well-backed Lavorante the only other finisher.
Trojan Du Berlais maintained his unbeaten record for the season, in the concluding Members’ contest with Atlantic Fleet his only opponent. Very little is gleaned from ‘match’ races and the slow pace of the race wouldn’t have helped either runner in the assessment of their jumping on the day. The margin of victory was 2 ½ lengths and Trojan Du Berlais’ owner and trainer will expect harder races for their horse as the season progresses. One quirky comment on the race, provided by Andrew Hickman, the starter, prior to sending the duo on their way “Where was the last time in a point-to-point race that the only two horses entered, were trained by
two different people and travelled the least distance to the races as they are stabled less than a mile away from each other, at opposite ends of the racecourse?”.
Tullys Touch is a wonderful servant to owner Christina Blockley and is always brought to the races fit and well, by trainers Melanie and John Ibbott. In the Mens Open race, John had secured the services of current leading jockey, James King, who employed restraining tactics on the 11yo, content to sit behind the other three runners for the majority of the race. Red Maple had gone off the odds-on favourite and Alex Chadwick was also intent on keeping his mount covered up but when the pace increased around the final bend, where the remedial work had taken place, it was Tullys Touch and King who stayed on the best up the Ampton finishing straight to record a 2 ¾ length victory over Red Maple, This was the sixth course success for Tullys Touch and his eleventh points win in total and has been partnered to victory by some top names in Gina and Jack Andrews, Will Biddick and now James King can be added to the list.
Although Nick Wright, owner/trainer based on the Suffolk/ Cambridgeshire border saw his Red Maple beaten, earlier he had
continued his winning season when Mount Pleasant challenged to lead the race after jumping three fences out, with jockey Alex Chadwick always confident of success in the Restricted race. Mister Splash, for the Turner family, led the field with some mighty leaps but Mount Pleasant was always travelling easily and although outjumped by the leader three fences out, the eventual winners pulled away with Chadwick commenting post-race “I knew I had plenty of horse under me and there was no need to push it. Nick is an easy person to ride for and his horses are always competitive.”
Ellie Holder rode a determined and strong finish on her mount, Champagne Noir, to just head No Hassle Hoff on the run-in, in the Ladies Open contest. This was Ellie’s ninth career win, five of which have been on
Champagne Noir, of which she is the owner but has secured a syndicate to be involved for this season. The three runners involved are all consistent performers and it was Precious Bounty and Ellie Callwood who led with No Hassle Hoff and Izzie Marshall always in close attendance whilst Champagne Noir appeared to be off the bridle, even on the last circuit. However, up the stiff, climbing finish Precious Bounty gave way and No Hassle Hoff injected more pace and headed for home but Holder’s resolve and knowledge of her mount’s ability enabled them to draw level, at the last, and secure a narrow victory by ½ length.
In the opening Veteran Horse Conditions race, Coolagh Park comfortably landed the odds having dictated the race from the front. Izzie Marshall pressed on from four fences out
SUNDAY 03 MARCH 2024
By Will Milburnand the partnership were 10 lengths up at the next obstacle and maintained that advantage over their rivals in front of the judge.
The Novice Riders’ race provided, as it so often does, a memorable day in the life of sixteen- year-old Tom Hutsby, from Warwickshire, who cooly took command of proceedings after Ryans Fancy had unseated at the second open ditch and easily saw off any further challengers. Dad Fred, was particularly proud of his son’s achievement and Tom’s involvement in pony racing in the past, has assisted his progression.
Ampton’s season is now complete having provided two entertaining and excellently administered meetings, both here and in January.
This weekend saw an excellent card of racing at Charm Park near Wykeham, an eight race card did not fail to entertain a well attended crowd and the jockey in form on the day was Nick Orpwood who had travelled down to partner Red Delta in the Restricted and then quickly stepped in for the injured Paddy Barlow in the first division of the Open Maiden. A long but very successful day, which also saw several of the organising committee members take home first honours as well. Organised by a keen young team of
current and retired point to point jockeys, with profits going to the Injured Jockeys Fund and Racing Welfare.
Nick Orpwood’s first winner came in the hotly contested Restricted race, aboard the Fiona Needham trained Red Delta. The winner travelled nicely to the lead and asserted well in the closing stages and looks another progressive youngster for the rest of the season “he’s such a lovely horse and he’s improving all the time” said his winning
trainer, who will be hoping for Cheltenham glory in two weeks time with the stable star Sine Nomine. Arthur’s Seat rallied after making the early running and can certainly atone in the coming weeks, in second, whilst favourite Main Stage weakened back in third for the Ellis team.
The Open Maiden was split on the day and division two would complete Orpwood’s double as he stepped in at the last minute to ride the Sam Coward trained Sunset On Fire,
The Intermediate runners riding off into the sunset at Charm Parkwhich was a fitting winner with the rapidly diminishing light. Having only run once for Olly Murphy this 6yo by Flemensfirth stuck it out well at the end and forged clear of the early leader Therussiansaddler under Ross Wilson to win well. Having shown very little in his one run to date it was no surprise to former ladies’ champion jockey Jacqueline Coward of the victory “Olly rang us up and said he had this horse... he’s just taken time and really suits our routine... I rode him one day and said to Sam I like this, this will be alright!” enthused the winning trainer’s sister. We Done It continues to edge closer to success under Joe Wright back in third.
Division one of the Open Maiden went to Clerk of the Course Will Easterby, aboard his own Lou Marvelous. Bought from Mick Easterby this 7yo had been off the track for nearly three years with leg problems, after finishing second in a Perth bumper. Upside the runner up approaching the last, Easterby sat motionless as he allowed his mount to edge away close home and win by 2 lengths, denying the Coward team of a quick double “I was a bit cheeky there...but he’s been off the track for so long I wanted to give him an as easy time as I could” said Will who has worked endlessly along with other members of the Yorkshire Jockeys Club over the last few months to get this meeting in fantastic condition. Third saw Where’s Hector under Harry Myddleton, who stayed on after making the early running.
Miami Magic was a very impressive winner of the Goffs Young horse maiden for the Dale Peters team, partnered by Dale this 5yo son of Leading Light led from the word go and
from three out gradually drew clear, with only Daytime Dreaming and Jack Andrews in pursuit, but the winner quickened well after the last and won with plenty in hand and could be a smart prospect for the future “he’s potentially the nicest horse I’ve ever trained... he’s a machine...he could make up into a graded horse” enthused the winning trainer/ rider. Bought from Doncaster sales Miami Magic may now go for another point to point before heading to the Aintree Bumper. Third place saw a pleasing debut from Kilaro for the Bevin team and could be able to pick up a race in the near future.
The Mens Open saw pointing newcomer Buster Valentine get his head in front after 10 months off the track, he was making his reappearance for Chairman and entries’ secretary of the meeting Will Milburn, and jockey Paddy Barlow. The pair led approaching three out and stayed on well up the home straight to beat odds on favourite Senor Lombardy “once he got to the front he pricked his ears, but he was loving it, he jumped class!” enthused Paddy Barlow. The winner was retired to go eventing, but after reaching his best in that sphere it was decided to send him pointing “he’s been a legend to train, he’s been hacking, hunting and I wasn’t sure how fit he was as I’ve only had him 7 weeks, but I just wanted him to enjoy it” said Will who will continue to point Buster Valentine and his next target could be in two weeks.
The opening race went the way of Christy Furness and Camdonian, trained by Jack Teal, this improving 8yo was an easy winner at Duncombe Park, he continued his good
form this season and quickened well after the last to beat the Tom Ellis trained Benefaktor. Camdonian is now two for two this season and undefeated in point to points, with his only defeat for these connections coming in a Cheltenham Hunter Chase. He is certainly ready to take the step into Open company and been a novice under rules, a maiden or novice hunter chase could very well be in his aim.
Due to several delays and divisions, the final race was run under rapidly diminishing light, however organisers were swift to get the race run and the Intermediate race went to the improving Duke Account, trained and ridden by John Dawson, the pair made all the running and battled on strongly after the last with both Fire In Her Eyes and Courting Flow challenging from both sides, however a tenacious display saw Dawson come out on top. Duke Account is from a long line of winning pointers with his mother been the Grimthorpe Gold Cup winner Duchess Account and been lightly raced, this 9yo could have more to offer.
The Ellis team got on the score sheet with the Cheltenham Hunter Chase winner Fairly Famous under Gina Andrews. The pair tracked a strong pace on the final circuit and pulled clear on the approach towards the last fence, it appeared a weary finish in ground that may have been softer than ideal and could return to the top level on better ground.
