Planning Begins For GOPIO International Convention 2024

T

he GOPIO International Convention is being planned for April 26-28, 2024, to be held in New Jersey. This convention is highly timely since it intends to focus on India’s present and future and what role the Diaspora Indians can play in helping to realise this desirable future. The convention theme is ‘Opportunities for Diaspora Indians in India’s Big Manifest Future.’

As part of the convention, plans are being made for five conference sessions as follows: 1. Diaspora Youth and Young Achievers, their role in India’s Future, and how GOPIO can facilitate their participation.

2. Diaspora Women and their Growing Contributions in Various Sectors. How can GOPIO further facilitate their Role and Participation?

3. Technologies and AI and other Innovations.

How are Diaspora Indians Leading Research and Innovations?

4. GOPIO Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Worldwide Networking of the Diaspora Businesses.

W

elcome to the first

edition of 2024; so much happened in the last month; I hope you all had a wonderful holiday and got an opportunity to spend some quality time with your loved ones. I must begin by thanking everyone for the positive feedback on the December News Bulletin.

Since the last bulletin, our official Facebook page has been set up, and the WhatsApp group has been created thanks to Nami Kaur.

I acknowledge the support of our chairman, Thomas Abraham, who has managed the newsletter for over twenty years; it is not an easy task and requires a lot of dedicated time, especially chasing up the articles, photos, and captions.

I am excited about the upcoming GOPIO International. Convention: from the briefing by the convention convenor, Prakash Shah, the convention promises to be timely and relevant; I look forward to meeting many of you in person at the Convention.

Walking into 2024 feels like peeking through a crack in the door and slowly slipping into space.

There’s something different in the air in 2024. After the holiday season – and whether it was joyous or complex – there’s a willingness to make 2024 excel.

The past few years have challenged every family I know in ways big and small. While good and evil always form the mix, I hope you and your family find this new year gentle, with luck and the best goose bumps in little everyday joys.

To reboot, to make memories, to make it count. Instead of promising ourselves so much, I hope we are more pragmatic. Travel is increasingly becoming more and more invaluable, not for work, but to enrich our lives.

But really, what stands out to me is personalisation in everything we do and how we achieve our personal goals daily, weekly, and monthly. It’s no longer about our to-dos but our ta-das.

It’s a fresh new year! Are you the type of person who writes out a detailed list of New Year’s resolutions, or are you more like me – a shrug and a sigh, “Well, I’ll do the best I can”?

A fresh calendar is like a clean house or car; it’s satisfying and gives a spark of hope. My calendar is already filling up for 2024 – vacation planned, trips to see family, work (of course), and unending local events.

Even though the Holidays are in the rear-view mirror, we still have things happening in our GOPIO community. Many of our chapters are very active in the community.

I want to invite submissions from all chapters and regions so that there is balanced reporting.

GOPIO International News Bulletin is a compelling medium with vast reach, so we must utilise it to get the message out to the masses.

Based on your feedback, I have tried to incorporate some changes and will constantly strive to maintain the quality.

The Life Members and Chapter Delegates from the New York area are excited to host the GOPIO International Convention from April 26-28 this year. A kick-off meeting for the convention organisation launch and the planning meeting will be held on Sunday, January 28th. Please see the details below. We request all the Life Members and Chapter Delegates from the New York area to attend this meeting so that you can actively participate in the Convention 2024. We also need volunteers to serve on the various committees.

Please plan to come to New York (the closest airport is Newark, New Jersey) for the convention, where we will have the Annual General Body Meeting. GOPIO Convention will also be a fun event, with some side trips (including optional trips to New York City, Atlantic City and Washington DC). NRI Karma Ratna Award for GOPIO Canberra President Nishi Puri OAM

ishi Puri OAM, president of the GOPIO Canberra chapter and Multicultural Association of Canberra, received the NRI Karma Ratna Award this year on 9th January at the Constitution Club in India. Nishi Puri OAM said, “It was indeed an honour to receive this recognition”.

GOPIO Canberra donates food to international students

G

OPIO Canberra chapter, in collaboration with the Multicultural Association of Canberra, has restarted its food donation drive for this year to assist Indian and other international students studying at the University of Canberra who are doing it tough.

This service began during COVID-19 in 2021 and is ongoing. Food supplies are delivered each fortnight to the University of Canberra International student pantry for distribution.

GOPIO Canberra is grateful to the community and patrons for their ongoing support.

GOPIO Canberra, in collaboration with the Multicultural Association of Canberra, celebrated Lohri, the festival of Harvest

L

ohri is primarily a North Indian function and fosters new beginnings and hope. Tradition has it that People forgive their enemies and pray for a happy, healthy, and prosperous life.

On this day, people sing, dance, and light a bonfire to farewell the winter months (in India) and thank nature for a bountiful harvest.

The South Indians celebrate the harvest festival as Pongal, where they cook sweet rice made with jaggery from the new harvest to signify new beginnings for a new year.

Happy Lohri and Happy Pongal to all those who are celebrating.

GOPIO Canberra thanked Minister Rebecca Vassaroti from Greens Shadow multicultural MLA Peter Cain, Member of

Brindabella MLA Nicole Lawder and MLA Elizabeth Kikkert for gracing the Occasion.

They thanked all community leaders and members for joining the full house event and helping GOPIO Canberra promote multiculturalism, as there were not only people of Indian origin but also leaders from various communities.

GOPIO-CT Raises Funds for Local Charities at its Annual Holiday Party

OPIO-CT chapter organised a fundraiser at its Holiday Party to benefit the Connecticut Institute for Refugees and Immigrants (CIRI) over the weekend. It was one of the most successful Holiday Parties and fundraising for charities. With a full house and overflowing, the chapter raised $5,000, and the check was presented to CIRI President and CEO Susan Schnitzer.

GOPIO-CT also presented checks to two other charities with similar amounts, Future 5 and Women’s Mentoring Network. These two later groups two have been supported by GOPIO-CT since 2016.

by Political Leaders and Visiting Dignitaries. GOPIO Community Service Awards will be presented at the evening banquet. The convention will conclude with the GOPIO General Body Meeting on Sunday, April 28th.

This convention is an ambitious undertaking that requires a lot of planning and organisational work. Volunteers

are needed to serve on various committees. It is an excellent opportunity to work as a team with people whom you may not have known or met before.

GOPIO-CT's 'College and Beyond' Event Enlightens Students with Expert Insights

he Global Organization of People of Indian Origin - Connecticut Chapter (GOPIOCT) hosted a highly engaging networking and panel discussion event titled ‘College and Beyond’ on Saturday, December 23rd, at the Hampton Inn and Suites in Stamford, Connecticut. The event, aimed at high school and college students returning home for holidays and young professionals, was a resounding success with total attendance.

The panel discussion, adeptly coordinated and moderated

by GOPIO-CT Board Member Nandu Kuppuswamy, Managing Partner at Ambrosian Sun Advisors, featured speakers who shared their wisdom and insights on various aspects of college and professional life. The goal was to equip high school students with a roadmap to navigate the challenging college

Ms. Bhalla provided a comprehensive overview of industry hiring and human resource trends. She emphasised the growing importance of technological literacy in an AI-dominated age. Menal Financial Group CIO Shubin Jha highlighted the significance of qualifications beyond degrees, focusing on what employers seek in recent graduates. Every panellist emphasised the critical role of strategic and consistent networking in uncovering educational opportunities and forging future professional paths.

UChicago sophomore Veda Swaminathan and Brown University senior Shouri Akarapu, a senior at Brown University, reassured high school students about the college selection process. They stressed that students often find their rightful place and highlighted the importance of a supportive social structure during their undergraduate years.

AQR’s Global Trading Analyst Kabir Chavan and Pace University sophomore Ms. Himani Narayan spoke about students needing to

find a college that fits their personality, going beyond brand recognition to ensure emotional well-being and passion.

UChicago junior Gourav Bansal and Vanguard Software Engineer Adarsh Sushanth pointed out that while most undergraduate courses have similar curriculums, the real differentiation lies in the effort students put in and the benefits they draw from the college's resources, including infrastructure, faculty, opportunities, and alum network.

GOPIO officials graced the event, including GOPIO International Chairman Dr. Thomas Abraham, GOPIO-CT President Dr. Jaya Daptardar, Executive Vice President Mahesh Jhangiani, Vice President Prachi Narayan, Treasurer Srinivas Akarapu, and Associate Secretary Ashvini Persaud. Dr. Daptardar, in her welcoming address, spoke about GOPIO-CT activities and urged the youth and young professionals to get involved in the chapter activities. After the panel discussion, Dr. Abraham discussed GOPIO International and the various chapters' roles in community service and activities of broader interest to the local society. Mr. Jhangiani concluded the meeting with a

vote of thanks. Board Member Kuppuswamy put the program together.

The panellists also spoke on how one could promote oneself for college admissions, a career, internships and summer jobs. Many students benefitted by getting contacts at the event. This successful event underscored GOPIO-CT’s commitment to supporting young people's educational and professional development in the Indian American community.

Over the last 18 years, GOPIO-CT, a chapter of GOPIO International, has become an active and dynamic organisation hosting interactive sessions with policymakers and academicians, community events, youth mentoring and networking workshops, and working with other area organisations to help create a better future. GOPIOCT – Global Organization of People of Indian Origin – serves as a non-partisan, secular, civic and community service organisation – promoting awareness of Indian culture, customs and contributions of people of Indian origin through community programs, forums, events and youth activities. It seeks to strengthen partnerships and create an ongoing dialogue with local communities.

Chapman University recognises Kewal. K. Kanda

K

ewal K Kanda, Vice President of GOPIO International, was presented a Certificate of Recognition by Chapman University's George L Argyros College of Business and Economics in recognition of his outstanding Community Leadership.

He was commended by Dr Pradip Shukla, Associate Professor of Management at Chapman University, for his leadership as Chairman of India75 Group, which organized four programs to celebrate India's 75 years of independence in 2022-23.

They also published a tabletop hardcover book that was highly appreciated for its design and contents.

shok Nichani, the immediate President of The Connecticut chapter of the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO), visited Australia and New Zealand in December.

He met many GOPIO Leaders in the respective regions. Umesh Chandra, OAM Executive Vice President of GOPIO International, organised a dinner function in honour of Ashok Nichani at Indian Brothers restaurant in Taringa.

Ashok Nichani is a very successful businessman and owns a chain of hotels, he has been a staunch member of GOPIO International.

In the previous years, GOPIO CT (USA) has raised funds for other charities, such as

Women’s Mentoring Network of Stamford, Future 5 of Stamford and Teach for America, a national organisation.

Founded in New York in 1989, GOPIO is an international network of people of Indian origin.

Veteran Journalist Ashok Tandon Meets Community In Artesia, CA

A

RTESIA, CA – On December 28, 2023, a special meet and greet with Ashok Tandon, a seasoned Indian journalist and political commentator, took place at the Yantra Kitchen restaurant, here.

Kewal Kanda, Vice President of GOPIO-Int’l, introduced Bhai Sahib Satpal Singh Khalsa during the gathering, highlighting his longstanding acquaintance since college days, with Tandon.

Tandon has been a media advisor to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, since 2014, and has previously served as the in-charge of Media Relations in Prime Minister Atal Bihari Bajpayee’s PMO, holding the rank of Additional Secretary.

Tandon addressed the audience, emphasizing their role as ambassadors of India.

He urged them to actively promote India, envisioning the country’s ascent as a world leader and superpower.

He further encouraged the audience to engage and

educate the youth to dispel misconceptions about India’s progress.

The event featured the launch of Tandon’s book “Reverse Swing: From Colonist to Cooperation,” which was launched by Bhai Sahib Satpal Singh.

The evening concluded with a lively question-and-answer session with Ashok Tandon, who graciously answered

numerous questions from the engaged audience. The afternoon served as a platform for meaningful discussions and reflections on India’s global standing and the collective role of the Indian diaspora.

The event was proudly sponsored by Bhai Sahib Satpal Singh Khalsa, an ambassador of Sikh Dharma and the chairman of Guru Ram Das Sikh Mission of America.

GOPIO International life member Prashant Gupta recognised as one of the top fifty influential authors in 2023

P

rashant Gupta’s first book was recognised among the top 50 influential authors in 2023. Prashant Gupta, a GOPIO Life Member, has a 25-year career in internet technology with innovations in the Motorola Razr cellphone, a decade in building the Microsoft Azure cloud, and his recent endeavours on the secure-first Co-pilot with passkeys and personalisation foundations.

Upon his return to India, Gupta introduced the Digital India solution stack, tackling issues ranging from school dropouts to employability for retired soldiers, climate-smart agriculture for smallholder farmers, and preventive health screening in rural areas. His work touched more than 10 million people from marginalised communities and was cited by the Government of India, the US, and the United Nations.

Beyond his technology career, PG has advised state governments in India on development policy and collaborated with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and GIZ (German Federal Ministry).

Devoted to a philosophy of collective well-being, PG co-founded the Microsoft Accelerator for Start-ups and built health consortia in cardiology, eyecare and 16 | DECEMBER JANUARY 2024 2023

pathology with partners in the US, Europe and Asia.

One notable contribution is creating India's first AI-based Cardiovascular Risk Score in partnership with Apollo Hospitals, Maastricht, AIIMS, and KGMU. It was recently published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) and saved lives.

A Kellogg alum, PG has received several Industry recognitions, patents and awards. His 108-interfaith pilgrimage culminated in

the launch of his memoir, "The Flow of My Life," during the World Book Fair, commemorating India's 75th independence and featured a foreword by Dr. Tapti Roy, a historian from Cambridge, England. In 2023, Gupta was acknowledged as one of the top 50 influential authors, a testament to the impact of his memoir, which has touched hearts across countries with its profound words of hope and peace. 23rd, 2023. The Alliance of Global Sindhi Association is an Umbrella organization of the entire Sindhi Community scattered all over the world.

the Alliance since GOPIO International President Lal Motwani had earlier served as the President of the Alliance.

It was a well-organised event in Dubai attended by 500 plus delegates of business tycoon personalities, professionals and entrepreneurs with enriched exposure knowledge levels. Dawani also made a presentation on the Indian American Club Non-Profit Corporation, its communityrelated activities, and the performance of governmentfunded projects.

He was presented with a memento for his valuable contribution to the 28th International Sindhi Convention 2023.

OPIO Life Member Soruba Rani Kuusto received the Melvin Jones Fellow award from the Lions Club International Foundation for dedicated humanitarian services on 1/7/2024.

She is a retired Registered Nurse consultant from the State of California, Dept. of Corrections. She is a skilled negotiator, calm under pressure, with over 35 years of experience managing complex issues. She has also worked as a CAL- -OSHA inspector and a nursing instructor in colleges and state prisons.

Rani is an enthusiastic volunteer and currently holds the following positions: She was recognised as the lion of the year 20192020. Soruba “RANI” Kuusto is being recognised as a Woman of Empowerment Life (DIAMOND)member in 2022

by P.O.W.E.R (Professional Organization of Women of Excellence Recognized).

India (Chennai). She worked as a nurse with Peace Corps volunteers in the Middle East.

As a lifetime Nurse educator, Rani also volunteers to educate senior citizens on diabetes, asthma, and heart disease. She has been one of the conveners at the diabetic summits hosted by the GOPIO-LA chapter during the International Diabetic Month of November for the past four years.

In prisons, as an educator, she educated inmates on domestic violence and health-related topics and educated children in schools on the impacts of bullying. Rani volunteers regularly at health clinics, administering vaccinations and vision screenings and working at health fairs.

As a volunteer, she also participates in packing food and children’s materials for delivery to underdeveloped countries. As a volunteer, she also assists in distributing food regularly to low-income families, students, and seniors every 2 Saturdays a month with the Gurthwara organisation.

As a volunteer, she helped her local church by cooking for the homeless & distributing food, clothes, etc. As a volunteer, she also assists with youth programs.

Rani earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from S.N.D.T. College of Nursing in Mumbai, India and her master’s in public health from California State University, Long Beach.

She is also a certified Midwife and a Public Health Nurse.

Rani says, “I am often described as a kind-hearted and a great listener. My lifetime mission is to empower and

he GOPIO TRIOLET NORTH MAURITIUS, in collaboration with the Nav Yuvak Mandali and the Poornawaad Parivar Mauritius, celebrated the Durga Pooja from 15th to 24th October 2023 at the Ram Prakash Mandir, Triolet.

Among the many Indian festivals, they were celebrated in Mauritius, such as Holi, Diwali, Maha Shivarari, Thaipoosum Cavadee, Ganesh Chaturthi, Ugadi, and Durga Pooja, also celebrated with much enthusiasm by the Hindu Community twice a year.

Trinidad’s First PM Of Indian Descent, Basdeo Panday Dies

B

asdeo Panday, the first Indian-origin Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago who once said, “If you see me and a lion fighting, feel sorry for the lion”, has passed away at the age of 90.

A lawyer, trade unionist, economist, actor, politician, and former civil servant, Panday wore many hats and was the fifth Prime Minister from 19952001 after the Caribbean nation gained independence in August 1962.

Panday died on the New Year surrounded by his family, according to a statement by his daughter Mickela Panday.

“With deep sorrow, we would like to share that our loving husband and father, Basdeo Panday, passed away on 1st January 2024, surrounded by his family,” Mickela wrote on Facebook, informing about her father’s demise.

“In life and death, he was a fighter. He passed with his boots on, keeping everybody around him on their toes with his wit and humour. He will live on in all of us, remembered as a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, leader, and friend.”

Mickela added that her father inspired his family and everybody who knew him and that they will continue to celebrate his life and treasure the times spent with him.

A 2005 Pravasi Bharatiya Samman recipient, Basdeo Panday, is survived by his wife, Oma Panday, and their four daughters.

Born on May 25, 1933, in a rural village in Princes Town, he studied at New Grant Government Primary School and later Presentation College, San Fernando, where he obtained his Cambridge School Certificate.

Moving to England, he

undertook a Diploma Course in Drama from the London School of Dramatic Art in 1960 and earned a degree in law in 1962 from the Inns of Court of Law. H e co-founded three political parties, including the United National Congress (UNC), whose electoral base was primarily Indo-Trinidadian.

He first entered Parliament on September 15, 1972, as an Opposition Senator and subsequently became a House of Representatives member representing the Couva North constituency.

In 2005, Basdeo Panday was arrested in a case related to an airport construction contract and was accused of corruption.

However, with supporters claiming the accusations were politically motivated, the corruption charges were dropped.

Mourning his demise, Trinidad and Tobago President Christine Kangaloo said in a statement, "Panday was a giant of a man who led this country with passion and compassion”.

Indians comprise around 38 per cent of the Trinidad and Tobago population, and the approximate population of Indians in the country as of 2023 is 5.60 lakh.

According to government data, India contributed about 143,000 indentured workers to Trinidad between 1845 and 1917. Most came from northern India, mainly from the erstwhile districts of the United Provinces and Bihar.

A Tribute to Dr Jagat Motwani

I

t is unfortunate news for all of us in the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) to know that Dr. Jagat Motwani is no more. A Fulbright scholar, professor and social worker, Dr. Jagat Motwani worked for the State of New York and made outstanding contributions to the field of Social Work. Besides his professional contributions, he stood out for contributing to the Indian Diaspora community for the last four decades.

Dr Jagat Motwani was a strong leader of the Indian Diaspora community and a founding member of the GOPIO. He was a Co-Convener of the First Global Convention of People of Indian Origin held in 1989 in New York City, where GOPIO was formed. He served as an official of several community organizations, including Heart and Hand for the Handicapped (HHH), Federation of Indian Associations (FIA), National Federation of Indian-American Associations (NFIA) and the last in GOPIO as its Secretary General. Dr. Motwani was one of the initiators of the First India Day Parade in New York City in 1981 and served as its Marshal.

He wrote several books on the Indian Diaspora and Indian history.

He was a patriotic Indian.

I had had an opportunity to 32 | JANUARY 2024

work with him closely since 1978 when he represented HHH in FIA New York. From that time, he was with me in every group I had initiated, including NFIA and GOPIO. In the FIA New York, we created a program to provide family counselling to new immigrants.

As FIA President, I attended several meetings at his house to coordinate this effort.

Many of you may not know that in 1988, when the US Govt. was planning to give massive military aid to India, we from the National Federation of Indian American Associations (NFIA) were invited to give in front of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. We went to attend the meeting, but it was cancelled. They again scheduled this meeting and informed us one day before. So, we drove to Washington DC, starting at 10 pm and reaching at about 2.30 am. We did some practice with Jagatji, giving the testimony.

Early in the morning, we went to the Senate hearing, where Jagatji presented our testimony, and we could stop that massive military aid to Pakistan.

When we thought of the First Global Convention of People of Indian Origin in 1989 under the aegis of NFIA, we were in unchartered territory since there was no communication between our communities worldwide.

Telephone communication was costly, and personal meetings were the only option then. So, we decided to travel to all countries with large Indian Diaspora populations. Dr Motwani was a great help in travelling alone to the Far Eastern countries to seek participation and support from the Indian Diaspora.

We had travelled together to many parts of the world and all over India, promoting the First Global Indian Convention held in New York in 1989. At the convention, Dr Motwani and his co-editors brought out the first-ever book on Global Indian Diaspora - Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow. After the GOPIO was formed at the convention, Dr. Motwani contributed as Secretary General and later as the Chairman of the GOPIO Academic Council for over two decades.

GOPIO International and its chapters convey our heartfelt condolences to Shilpa, Neha, Jyoti, and Lal Motwani's families. We will miss him in our midst. May his soul rest in peace.

A Tribute to the Late Prof. Ved Prakash Nanda

rof. Ved Prakash Nanda was a professor of International Law at the University of Denver, Colorado. He was Past President of the World Jurist Association and later its Honorary President, honorary Vice President of the American Society of International Law and later its counsellor, and a member of the advisory council of the United States Institute of Human Rights. He was widely published, having authored or co-authored 24 books in various fields of international law. Prof.

Ved Nanda also received several awards, including the Gandhi, King, and Ikeda Awards for Community Peace Building.

Prof. Nanda was a good friend. He was a patriotic Indian. I had had an opportunity to work with him closely since 1981 when I took up a job at the University of Denver, where Prof. Nanda was already working at the law school. Since then, we worked together on many community campaigns. We jointly did a couple of Indian-American fundraising campaigns for candidates running for elections in Colorado in the 1980s.

Other than his professional contribution as a professor of law and a leading legal expert, he stood out for his contribution to the Indian Diaspora community for the last five decades.

Besides what others said earlier, Prof. Nanda

significantly contributed to mainstream Indian community organisations. At our First Global Convention of People of Indian Origin in 1989 in New York City, Prof. Nanda was entrusted with developing a structure for a global Indian Diaspora organisation. He helped to draft the constitution and bylaws of the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO). He had attended many of our early steering committee meetings and conventions in the USA, Europe and India.

He was also a frequent speaker at the conventions organised by the National Federation of Indian American Associations (NFIA) in different US cities.

After our First GOPIO Convention in 1989 in New York, he chaired the GOPIO Human Rights Commission.

He successfully campaigned on the human rights violations of Indo-Sri Lankans and IndoFijians at the UN Human Rights Commission in 1991 in Geneva.

He substantially contributed to building the Indian American community’s infrastructure through national organisations for the last five decades. His passing away is a significant loss for our community.

GOPIO International and its chapters convey our heartfelt condolences to Nanda's family, particularly Anjali and her family. We will miss him in our midst. May his soul rest in peace.

prominent businessman in Fiji, GOPIO International Life Member Vinod Patel was also a philanthropist supporting the Indian Diaspora community. He was honoured with GOPIO’s Community Service Award at the GOPIO Convention in Bangalore in 2017.

Vinod Patel's funeral service was held at Vinod Patel Park in Ba Fiji Islands, followed by his cremation at Varoko Crematorium at 1.30 pm.

Hundreds had assembled to honour the memory of the late Vinod Chandra Patel, while businesses in Ba Town were closed from 12 pm to 2 pm.
