Message From The President
We are meeting at a time when momentous changes are occurring in India.
But who are we? When I say we, who I am talking about. Well, I am taking about the 38 million strong Diaspora Indians, a constantly growing contagion made up of 50% or more Of People of Indian Origin (PIO), by which I mean those whose forefathers originally came from India and for a few generations settled abroad. Then there are Nonresident Indians (NRI), most of whom are born in India or are children of parents born in India.
GOPIO seeks to provide a networking Platform and bring together this diaspora, at multiple levels.
Today, this coming together, has a special meaning due to the dramatic developments in India. It was the former US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti who said last year “If you want to witness the Future, come to India.”. This statement captures it all.
In her “Suvarn Kaal” (Golden Period), that is the final 25 years of the century since Independence, India is bidding to become, not only a Developed Country but also, the Largest Economy as well.
An Economic and Military Superpower matching her status as the largest population in the world.
Many factors, including, Serendipity are working in India’s favor. The Post-Covid Supply chain disruptions, have convinced the world to seek alternative Manufacturing and Supply Chain with due efforts on India’s part to continue to build out its Infrastructure and Digital Economy and Improvise its Education and Worker training, India is well positioned to seize the Mantle. India’s 70% population is under 35 years age and Urbanization – which always augments productivity – is well underway but far from done. The Diaspora Indian have a major role for the technologies of the future.
This Convention is our modest effort to bring to your attention the size of the opportunities available in India including its Third largest ‘Start Up” Ecosystem and 125 ‘Unicorns” that is recent startups that have already reached a Market Valuation in excess of $ 1 Billion.
Welcome Delegates to Network and to Enjoy the Get-together.
Prakash Shah
President, GOPIO International
SENATOR PAUL SCARR
Liberal National Senator for Queensland
I am delighted to welcome all delegates attending GOPIO’s International Convention 2025 in Brisbane.
Since its formation in 1989, GOPIO has performed an invaluable service in promoting the well-being of people of Indian origin. GOPIO does outstanding work and builds strong networks between members of the Indian diaspora world-wide.
The Indian diaspora in Australia is a national asset. In addition to the contributions made to Australia by members of the Indian diaspora, the community serves as a human bridge connecting Australia and India. The Indian diaspora is a significant factor in the deepening of the relationship between Australia and India.
Over the last decade there has been a greater appreciation and recognition of Indian culture and history. In Brisbane, the community has embraced iconic Indian events, including the Diwali Festival of Lights and the Holi Festival of Colours. On each Australia Day, when many members of the Indian diaspora become Australian citizens, there is also a celebration of India Republic Day.
The subject of this convention is very appropriate. The emergence of new technologies and AI offer opportunities and new areas of collaboration. In many of these areas, people of Indian origin are at the forefront. I am sure that delegates at the Convention will take every opportunity to expand their networks and establish valuable relationships which will be the foundation for future endeavours.
On a personal basis, I acknowledge my good friend, Umesh Chandra OAM, who was the founding president of GOPIO Queensland and has been a driving force behind the convening of this event. Umesh and Usha Chandra are outstanding Australians. I thank them for their commitment to promoting multiculturalism in Queensland over many years. I also thank all other members of the organising committee and other volunteers for your hard work.
Enjoy the Convention!
Senator Paul Scarr
Shadow Assistant Minister for Multicultural Engagement

Message From Fiona Simpson MP
Minister for Women and Women’s Economic Security, Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships, Minister for Multiculturism
It is with great pleasure that I welcome visiting international delegates to the Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin International (GOPIO International) Convention 2025 in Queensland.
As the Minister for Multiculturalism in Queensland, I applaud GOPIO’s ongoing efforts in promoting cultural exchange, social empowerment, and economic development, while addressing the challenges faced by Indian communities globally.
I was thrilled to learn of the upcoming GOPIO Convention 2025, which will bring together influential leaders to discuss advancements in evolving technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Quantum Computing, Nanotechnology, Biomedical Innovation, and Renewable Energy.
The theme, "The Diaspora’s Role in Shaping Future Technologies," is particularly timely, as the contributions of the Indian Diaspora are increasingly shaping the future of innovation across the world.
Queensland is home to more than 90,000 people of Indian ancestry, with AustralianIndian communities playing a vital role in enriching our cultural and economic landscape.
They have contributed to Queensland’s diversity and prosperity, bringing with them a wealth of skills, innovation, and resilience.
Beyond cultural events, and of course cricket, Australian-Indian communities continue to play an active role in strengthening our social cohesion and economy.
The Indian Diaspora’s involvement in advancing new technologies and business, while improving sustainability, is vital to Queensland’s future success.
As we continue to build an inclusive and connected society, the full participation and recognition of all communities are paramount.
Together, we can overcome barriers, drive economic growth, and continue enriching our social and cultural life.
I wish you a successful convention in Brisbane and thank you for your ongoing contribution to Queensland’s way of life, today, and into the future.
Message From Mrs. Neetu Bhagotia Consul General of India, Brisbane
It is a pleasure to extend my best wishes to GOPIO International for hosting the International Convention 2025 in Brisbane, Queensland - Australia’s vibrant Sunshine State.
This prestigious gathering underscores GOPIO’s steadfast commitment to fostering global unity among people of Indian origin and strengthening the diaspora’s role in shaping the future.
For decades, GOPIO Inter national has been at the forefront of empowering the Indian diaspora through cultural exchange, social engagement, and advocacy. By celebrating our rich heritage and fostering meaningful collaborations, GOPIO International has played a pivotal role in uniting Indian-origin communities worldwide while amplifying their contributions across diverse fields.
The theme of this year’s convention, “The Diaspora’s Role in Shaping Future Technologies,” is both timely and forward-looking. Indian-origin professionals and entrepreneurs have made significant contributions to technological advancements globally, driving innovation, leading transformative ventures, and shaping the future of industries. Their expertise and leadership continue to pave the way for future generations, reinforcing the diaspora’s integral role in global progress.
I am sure this Convention will bring out some positive outcomes. The Consulate General of India, Brisbane, wishes GOPIO International an impactful and successful event, fostering new opportunities for engagement, innovation, and global connectivity.
Message to the GOPIO Convention 2025
Iam delighted to offer a message of support to the GOPIO Convention 2025, held in my hometown of Brisbane.
Since its foundation in 1989 GOPIO has recognised the vital role that the Indian diaspora can play in India’s relationships with countries that host a significant number of persons of Indian origin.
The Indian diaspora in Australia, now a million strong, is a testament to this. In a short space of time it has become one of Australia’s largest and certainly its fastest growing diaspora. Driven by high levels of Indian skilled migration to Australia and replenished by a large cohort of international students, Australia’s Indian diaspora is a key element in the forging of a broad relationship between Australia and India. A relationship anchored in a growing strategic convergence, complementary economies, a shared commitment to multilateralism and, now more important than ever, a determination to preserve as much as we can of a rules based international system.
The diaspora plays an important role as a bridge between Australia and India, a navigator of two different business cultures and a means of updating and deepening our knowledge of each other. The great value of a diaspora is that it can go where governments cannot: into the nooks and crannies of the relationship. In this way it adds a unique depth and texture to the bilateral relationship.
The Indian diaspora is not owned by any one side. It is and should be deployed as a shared asset. That is something GOPIO understands well and I wish the GOPIO Convention 2025 every success.
Peter N Varghese AO
Chancellor of The University of Queensland
Former Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Australian High Commissioner to India
Message from Archana Singh
Patron of GOPIO Queensland
Dear Friends, As Patron for GOPIO Queensland, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to the 36th Anniversary Convention of GOPIO International in Brisbane!
Since prehistoric times, human progress has been the product of knowledge sharing, primarily through human migration and trade. Globalisation, in the historical context of India, is not a new concept. Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, the world is one family; has been the guiding principle of India’s ancient belief system. Increasing Technology transfer in the 21st century has elevated this concept to new heights. India, the 5th largest economy in the world, is home to about 40% of the world’s Capability Centres, 25% of overall IT service exports, accelerated Technology Sectors and Hubs, 110 Unicorns, 130,000 start-ups, and swiftly developing Satellite and Digital Public Infrastructure and Technologies. More spectacular advancements in India, recently, have been in areas of Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Computer Vision etc that have impacted all areas of our lives.
The Indian Diaspora is growing exponentially across the globe, holding positions of power and influence and contributing significantly to the political, social, cultural and economic landscapes of the countries where they live and work; upholding their cultural and traditional heritage whilst building links between the host countries and Mother India. Organisations such as GOPIO, both nationally and internationally, assume increasing importance for not only addressing issues related to the needs and concerns of the Diaspora but also in harnessing a common pool of skills and talents for equitable, worldwide, human-centric growth and development.
With specific reference to India and Australia, the India Economic Strategy Report published in 2018 highlighted the importance of the role of the Indian Diaspora in strengthening the bilateral relationship on all levels. Small, sustained efforts of individuals and small businesses are as valuable as interactions and investments made by big companies and corporations. The potential for Diaspora members to create avenues for innovation through Technology Transfer in the pursuit of equitable human development worldwide, is unlimited!

The Number of "Unicorns" (Recent Startups already in excess of $1 Billion in Market Value) has now reached 125. Nothing can be more rewarding than Investing in a company that will become the next Unicorn. Today India has the Third Largest Start Up EcoSystem.
Already the Fifth Largest, India's Economy will, in a few years, be the Third Largest overtaking Japan and Germany. That is very commendable but the Real Story is the coming Qualitative Change in India's Economy. Nowhere is this more pronounced than in the Defense Industries. At this time, India is the World's Largest Importer of Defense Systems and Equipment, accounting for almost 10% of the World's Total Imports. But now India has embarked on a concerted Effort to "Make In India". From Aircrafts to the Ships and Submarines and the Aircraft Carriers: India has advanced in Rocket Systems, Missiles, Satellites and Space Exploration and Research: Even the coveted field of Hypersonic Missiles. In past, Defense Exports were a small fraction but have grown manifold in recent years. From the World's Largest Importer, by far, India is seeking to become a Net Defense Exporter. This will be a big change in the annual $100 Billion order of magnitude.
India's Service Exports, now over $320 Billion have leaped forward on the backs of Software and Back Office Operations. Going Forward the Huge Big Growth Opportunity is in becoming a Hub for Repair Overhaul and Maintenance of Air Craft and Ships for Military and Commercial Aircrafts and Vessels. By Developing World Class Health Facilities and
Doctors, India can provide for it's own Popu-lation and also Cater to the World Demand for Medical Tourism. India's Doctors and Engineers and Software Designers in the Diaspora have fostered a Worldwide Reputation for Excellence and the Country can Build on this base of Reputation and Excellence to Fashion a Big New' Service Exports *Industry that will be Employment Intensive for India's Educated Unemployed and also move India beyond the Software and Back Office that are now approaching Saturation.
India will soon be the Largest Manufacturer of Automobiles in the World (Currently Third Largest). There is also a changeover to the Renewable Energy the E Vehicles and the Hydrogen Powered Vehicles. (2,3 and 4 Wheelers). A rapid switchover to Renewables will eventually result in a reduction in Oil Imports that today is big part of India's Imports. Again another potential benefit to the Exchange Rate.
Due to a Major Commitment to the Manufacturing Sector, from Automobiles and Aircraft to Ships and Submarines and Defense Production to the Manufacture of Smartphones and Electronic Products and the SemiConductors and to the Pharmaceuticals, Vaccines and the Medical Products, India is Qualitatively Shifting the Economy into becoming a Manufacturing and Supply Chain Hub. Anyone remember the Rajkapoor Song: 'Mera Joota hai Japani'? Well this isn't your Grandfather's India Anymore!
But what is the Significance of all this? What if india becomes the Big Exporter in the World? What does that Change?
The Answer is it Changes the Exchange Rate!
If India can become a $10 Trillion Economy by 2034 at 86 Rupees to the Dollar, the same Economy will be a $20 Trillion Economy at 43 Rupees to the Dollar also by 2034! Today in Purchasing Power Parity India is already the Third Largest Economy. The Gap between the PPP Economy and the one in nominal Terms narrows when the Rupee is Stronger.
The entire gamut of india's numbers including the all important Per Capita Income, will look very dif-ferent if India were to become a Manufacturing Powerhouse and, in turn, cause the coming Strength-ening of the Rupee.
If that happens, as a Diaspora Indian, we can look forward to a Double Dividend, one from making a Smart Investment in future Paytm. Mensa, Ola or OYO Rooms and then when the Rupee strengthens we get more Dollars back from that Investment as well. Thus an Investment in India can be doubly Rewarded.
The Smart Money has already figured this Out! Earlier this Year the Top Investment Houses in the World agreed that India is the Best Investment Opportunity in the World today !!

Sant Nirankari Mission
The Indian Diaspora is a testament to resilience, wisdom, and the power of human connection. Across generations and continents, we have carried not just our traditions, but a deep sense of responsibility, to innovate, to uplift, and to create a future that serves all of humanity.
As the world moves forward with rapid advancements in science and technology, we must ask ourselves: What is the true purpose of progress? Are we advancing technology for the sake of power and ambition, or are we using our knowledge to bring people together, create opportunities, and build a future rooted in unity and shared prosperity?
True progress is not just about invention; it is about intention. Every breakthrough should bridge divides, foster inclusion, and ensure that no one is left behind. Technology must reflect our highest values, compassion, unity, and the unwavering belief that we are one.
At GOPIO Convention 2025, let this convention be more than just an exchange of ideas. Let it be a reaffirmation of our collective responsibility, to use knowledge with wisdom, innovation with integrity, and progress with purpose.
Warm Regards, Vijay Arora
