It has been an honour and a pleasure to serve as convenor for this year’s GOPIO International Convention 2025. Reflecting on the success of this remarkable event, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude. The convention was not just a gathering of leaders and delegates but a testament to the collective effort, hard work, and unwavering dedication of everyone involved. It demonstrated what teamwork and shared vision can accomplish, and I am deeply thankful to be part of such a vibrant and committed community.

At the heart of this success was the exceptional leadership and relentless drive of our international Chairperson, Dr. Thomas Abraham. His strategic vision, steadfast commitment, and inspiring guidance kept us focused and motivated throughout the planning and execution phases. Dr. Abraham’s leadership was a beacon that guided us through challenges, ensuring that we delivered an event that exceeded expectations and reflected the strength and unity of GOPIO’s global network.

I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to my dedicated team—Priya Jaganathan, Professor Prasad Yarlagadda OAM, and Dr. Aprna Hebbani— whose tireless efforts behind the scenes were vital to making this convention a reality. SUCCESSFUL CONVENTION KICKS OFF WITH CULTURAL PERFORMANCES AND KEY ADDRESSES IN BRISBANE

Brisbane, April 29, 2025 — The convention commenced promptly at 9:00 AM with a warm welcome from MC Zain Chams, who greeted attendees and officially called the event to order. The proceedings opened with a stirring performance of the Australian national anthem, followed by the Indian anthem displayed on the screen for all to sing along.

At 9:05 AM, Miss Valentina Ravirajah, a senior student

from the Natananjali School of Dance, delivered a captivating traditional dance performance, adding cultural richness to the event's opening moments. Shortly after, at 9:13 AM, a ceremonial lamp lighting took place, attended by dignitaries including the Premier, the Consul General, the Lord Mayor, Thomas Abraham, and Umesh Chandra, symbolising the auspicious start of the convention.

Following the lighting, the floor manager ensured that all dignitaries were comfortably seated by 9:18 AM. At 9:20 AM, Umesh Chandra delivered the Welcome Speech for the Inauguration Ceremony of the GOPIO International Convention, expressing his warm regards and emphasising the significance of the gathering. GOPIO INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION 2025 OPENS IN BRISBANE

Brisbane, April 28, 2025—The muchanticipated GOPIO International Convention 2025 was opened successfully at the Brisbane Marriott, bringing together community leaders, dignitaries, and delegates from around the world. The event, convened by Umesh Chandra OAM, began at 6:00 p.m. with a seamless registration process managed by Priya Jaganathan and Irene Bayldon for the welcome reception night Following registration, attendees enjoyed networking over drinks, courtesy of Marriott staff, at 6:30 pm. Umesh Chandra, the convenor, delivered an inspiring Welcome Speech for the Opening Night of the GOPIO International Convention on 28 March 2025. In his address, he expressed gratitude for the gathering, paid homage to the traditional custodians, and welcomed distinguished guests, including GOPIO International Chairperson Dr. Thomas Abraham, President Prakash Shah, and A/Inspector Andrew Dixon of the Queensland Police Service.

Umesh Chandra praised the efforts of the organising team and volunteers, emphasising the importance of collaboration and community unity. He also acknowledged the generous sponsors who supported the event and expressed excitement for the upcoming discussions, learning, and celebration.

Following the heartfelt speech, the program proceeded with welcoming

remarks by Zain Chama, who set a warm tone for the evening. This was succeeded by the addresses of leadership by Thomas Abraham and Prakash Shah, who highlighted the organisation’s achievements and future vision.

A notable highlight was Prakash Shah's presentation of a special award to Shaheen Mazeed of SABINSA at 7:20 p.m., recognising her significant contributions to the community. Shaheen

Mazeed responded graciously, expressing her sincere appreciation.

The Tapori Squad then performed an energetic dance at 7:30 p.m., adding vibrancy to the evening’s proceedings. The formal program concluded with Kewal Kanda delivering the vote of thanks at 7:40 p.m., acknowledging all who contributed to the convention's success.

Guests enjoyed a sumptuous buffet dinner served by Marriott staff at 7:45 p.m., which provided ample opportunity for networking and camaraderie. The festivities wrapped up with the opening of the dance floor at 8:30 p.m., inviting attendees to celebrate and connect further.

GOPIO INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION 2025 CONCLUDES WITH GLAMOROUS AWARDS & GALA DINNER

On the evening of March 29, 2025, the GOPIO International Convention hosted its highly anticipated Awards & Gala Dinner, bringing together distinguished guests, dignitaries, and community members to celebrate achievements and foster meaningful connections. The event commenced promptly at 6:00 p.m. with registration, attended by notable figures including Irene Bayldon, Priya Jagannathan, Mandy Kaur, and Neeru Virk. Following

registration, MC Zain Chams officially kicked off the evening at 6:30 p.m., welcoming attendees and inviting the crowd to settle in.

Zain Chams then warmly welcomed the country at 6:35 p.m. before inviting the audience to be seated. Mandy Kaur, Mayuresh Lande, and Anukul Sharma are overseeing the seating arrangements. The Marriott staff commenced bar service at 6:45 p.m., ensuring guests enjoyed refreshments throughout the evening.

At 6:50 pm, Umesh Chandra, the Convention Convenor, delivered opening remarks, setting a positive tone for the event. This was followed by a welcome address from the Chairperson, Thomas Abraham, at 6:53 pm. President Prakash Shah then introduced the awards segment at 6:58 pm, before personally presenting the awards starting at 7:00 pm. The awards presentation

concluded with Peter Varghese's response on behalf of the awardees at 7:16 p.m. The program then featured an inspiring address by the chief guest, Senator Paul Scarr, at 7:21 p.m., who spoke about the importance of community and leadership.

The evening continued with Umesh Chandra introducing Dr. Maha

Sinnathamby AM at 7:26 pm, leading to Dr. Sinnathamby's insightful speech at 7:28 pm. Professor Prasad moderated a Q&A session with Dr. Sinnathamby, which followed at 7:34 pm, engaging the audience with thought-provoking questions.

performing a lively dance segment at 7:44 p.m. At 7:54 p.m., Marriott staff served a sumptuous buffet dinner, allowing for relaxed networking and socialising.

The sponsor awards ceremony occurred at 8:30 pm, with Thomas Abraham and Prakash Shah presenting awards to their recipients. Umesh Chandra then took the stage at 8:40 pm to deliver his speech, emphasising the significance of community service and the collective efforts that make the convention successful. Track 1: Pioneering Technologies for a Better Future

Kicking off at 10:00 am, the technological track focused on integrating emerging innovations like artificial intelligence (AI), nanotechnology, quantum computing, and digital health into practical applications that can

revolutionise industries. The session titled "Artificial Intelligence in Health, Quantum Computing, Iot, and Digital Health" was moderated and opened by Professor Rajendra Acharya from the University of Southern Queensland. He emphasised the transformative potential of AI in healthcare, discussing how machine learning algorithms are improving diagnostics, personalised medicine, and patient monitoring.

Dr. Raj Gururajan highlighted the importance of bridging technology and patient care by deploying AI systems that enhance clinical outcomes. Meanwhile, Dr. Ajay Pandey presented advances in integrated photonic systems, highlighting their role in

robotics, medical imaging, and sports technology, underscoring the diaspora's vital role in pioneering such innovations.

Following this, the session shifted to nanotechnology and advanced materials, where experts like Prof. Prashant Sonar and Dr.

Indira Prasadam delved into the development of electronic and photonic devices. They discussed the potential of new materials in creating more efficient energy solutions, lightweight electronics, and next-generation devices that could significantly impact

industries like healthcare, energy, and manufacturing.

The afternoon segment focused on biomedical and healthcare innovations, emphasising nutraceuticals and immune modulation.

and its potential to bolster immune responses against viral infections, an area of growing importance amid global health challenges. Dr. Sankalp Khanna shed light on digital health initiatives, demonstrating how datadriven solutions transform patient management and health monitoring systems, especially in remote and underserved communities.

The session culminated with discussions on energy generation and storage devices, emphasising battery technology as a key enabler for sustainable development. Prof. Deepak Dubal moderated these discussions, highlighting opportunities for India and Australia to collaborate on advanced

energy storage solutions that could accelerate the transition toward renewable energy and achieve net-zero emissions. Dr. Ram Mohan outlined innovative approaches to battery design that could revolutionise energy storage for both industrial and consumer applications.

Track 2: Strengthening Diaspora Bonds and Community Development

Concurrently, the convention featured sessions dedicated to the social and community dimensions of the Indian diaspora. The panel on "NRIS and PIOS Working Closer to Achieve Common Goals" examined how these two significant segments—

non—resident Indians (NRIS) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOS)—can collaborate more effectively to address shared issues.

Led by Prof. Rajasekhar Vangapaty, the discussion explored ways to unify diverse community groups that differ in language, religion, and regional backgrounds but share a common cultural identity.

Panellists such as Rohit Vyas and Kewal Kanda emphasised the importance of joint initiatives that tackle discrimination, promote civil rights, and foster economic collaboration across borders. Participants also discussed how diaspora organisations can serve as bridges between their host countries and India, facilitating business opportunities and cultural exchange.

Another influential session focused on "Diaspora Women: Balancing Family, Culture, Discrimination, and Profession". Women of Indian origin from across the Caribbean, South Africa, Malaysia, Fiji, Sri Lanka, and Western countries shared

their inspiring stories of navigating cultural identity, professional growth, and social challenges. Panellists—such as Dr. Aparna Hebbani and Isha Vyas—highlighted their roles as cultural ambassadors and advocates, emphasising how women act as vital connectors within their communities and beyond. They discussed issues like racial discrimination, maintaining cultural traditions, and their contributions to fields such as medicine, technology, politics, and academia, demonstrating the evolving role of women in strengthening diaspora communities.

The session on "Diaspora Youth and Young Achievers" explored how the next generation of diaspora members can play a pivotal role in community development and international relations. Moderated by Vasu Pawar, this panel showcased

inspiring stories from young achievers, including a young filmmaker, STEM students, and budding entrepreneurs. Their stories underscored the importance of leveraging social media, digital platforms, and entrepreneurship to promote cultural exchange, enhance diaspora influence, and build bridges with India and other countries.

Building Business Networks and Economic Collaborations

The day's final session focused on the GOPIO Chamber of Commerce and Industry, emphasising the importance of global networking among diaspora businesses and SMES. Led by Prakash Shah, president of GOPIO International, the panel featured prominent entrepreneurs and business leaders from countries such as Fiji, Australia, and India. They discussed strategies to foster investment, facilitate trade, and support startups

and small businesses within the diaspora community.

Kamal Shetty from Investments Fiji shared insights into investment opportunities in Fiji and how diaspora entrepreneurs can tap into emerging markets. Jim Varghese highlighted the role of the Australia India Business Council in promoting bilateral trade, while Suman Dua discussed the importance of education and migration services to support diaspora entrepreneurs.

Conclusion: A Convergence of Innovation, Community, and Business

The GOPIO Convention’s parallel sessions vividly illustrated the multifaceted contributions of the Indian diaspora. From pioneering technological innovations that promise societal benefits to fostering stronger community bonds and expanding economic ties, the event underscored the vital role of diaspora members in shaping a brighter future. As the diaspora continues to evolve and adapt to global challenges, these discussions serve as a foundation for future collaborations, innovation, and solidarity across borders. The convention celebrated achievements and charted a course for continued engagement, growth, and unity among people of Indian origin worldwide.

GOPIO DELEGATION COMPLETES SUCCESSFUL POST-CONVENTION TOUR OF SPRINGFIELD, GOLD COAST, AND BRISBANE

Adistinguished delegation from the Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) recently concluded a comprehensive postconvention tour across Springfield, Gold Coast, and Brisbane. The tour showcased the region’s vibrant development and forged strengthened ties within the Indian diaspora community.

Corporation warmly welcomed the delegation, which hosted an engaging overview of the area’s dynamic operations. During the visit, delegates gained insight into Springfield’s expansive precincts, including the innovative Health City project and other key developments within the Springfield community. The tour provided a firsthand look at the region’s growth and future prospects, highlighting Springfield’s role as a leading urban hub.

GOPIO INTERNATIONAL DELEGATION VISITED FIJI, MARKING HISTORIC FIRST

In a significant milestone for the Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO), a high-profile delegation led by Umesh Chandra visited Fiji for the first time, representing the organisation at a prominent level. The delegation, comprising distinguished GOPIO executives worldwide, arrived in Fiji from March 31 to April 3, 2025, to strengthen ties with the Indian diaspora and explore collaborative opportunities.

The trip was facilitated by Investment Fiji, which provided transportation and logistical support throughout

the visit, ensuring smooth travel between cities and sites. The delegation’s journey began with a warm reception at Nadi Airport, followed by accommodations at the Mercure Hotel. During their stay, the delegates participated in various meetings and cultural activities, including visits to the historic Girmit Centre in Lautoka, commemorating the arrival of the first indentured Indians in 1869. Over 60,000 Indians had arrived in Fiji during that period, and the centre was established to honour their sacrifices.

A key highlight of the

trip was the interaction arranged at the Indian High Commission in Suva. The event was hosted by High Commissioner Shri Suneet Mehta, along with colleagues from the Indian diaspora, including CEOS from LICI, Bank of Baroda, and New India Assurance, all of whom have had a presence in Fiji since 1948. The roundtable discussion allowed delegates to briefly share their roles and discuss potential areas of collaboration across sectors such as science and technology, finance, media, tourism, and community development.

Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister, Biman Prasad, also warmly received the delegation at a reception held at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva. During this high-level meeting, new avenues for cooperation were discussed, and the Deputy Prime Minister was appointed as an advisor for GOPIO International, highlighting Fiji’s commitment to strengthening its ties with the Indian diaspora globally.

Notable delegates included Dr. Thomas Abraham, Chairman of GOPIO International, who has previously served as the President and Chairman of GOPIO; Siddharth Jain, GOPIO General Secretary; Prakash Shah, an investment banker with extensive experience in banking and tourism; and Umesh Chandra himself, who is also the CEO of Chantex Pty Ltd and founder of GOPIO Queensland. Other delegates represented a broad spectrum of expertise, from media and youth engagement to import-export businesses and property investments.

The delegation also visited historic sites like the Girmit Centre and enjoyed scenic drives through Fiji’s coastal towns, including Lautoka and Ba. The trip included cultural visits and dinners at notable locations like the Grand Pacific Hotel and Girmit Centre, emphasising Fiji’s rich Indian heritage and ongoing cultural legacy.

visit to Fiji as part of his Oceania regional tour. He was accompanied by President Prakash Shah, Vice-President Kewal Kanda (and his wife Asha), Secretary Siddharth Jain, Youth Council Chair Vasu Pawar, Media Council Chair Rohit Vyas (and his wife Isha), and Life Member Jayashri Chintalapudi.

Other distinguished guests included ACT List MP Dr. Parmjit Parmar, former National List MP Kanwaljit Singh Bashi, and former and current GOPIO officials such as Ashok Bhatia, Sandeep Aggarwal, Karnail Badhan, Alkesh Sharma, and Sameer Handa. Suman Kapoor, Founder-President of GOPIO Waikato Chapter, was also present.

The Growing Significance

India is a rising power poised to become the third-largest economy in the world. Successive Indian governments have increasingly looked towards the Indian Diaspora for stronger connectivity with governments, social and commercial institutions, and society. Every Indian abroad is a true ambassador of their homeland, and GOPIO International actively encourages their participation. Many of us may not realise our influence in shaping policies and programs related to India, but our organisation is centred around empowering the diaspora. We also serve as a vital platform for voicing concerns to the Indian government and collaborating for the

GOPIO INTERNATIONAL DELEGATION CONCLUDES MEMORABLE VISIT TO SYDNEY

The recent trip of the GOPIO (Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin) International delegation to Australia marked a series of enriching cultural and social experiences, culminating in a warm and engaging farewell in Sydney. The delegation, members travelling from Brisbane and other parts of Australia, explored the vibrant city and its iconic natural attractions for several days.

Exploring the Blue Mountains

One of the highlights of the trip was the visit to the renowned Blue Mountains,

a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its stunning vistas, lush eucalyptus forests, and dramatic cliffs. Delegates marvelled at the breathtaking scenery, taking in panoramic views of the valleys and waterfalls. The excursion provided a perfect opportunity for members to connect with Australia's natural beauty and share in a collective appreciation of its unique landscape.

Wildlife Encounters: Koalas and Kangaroos

No trip to Australia is complete without experiencing its distinctive wildlife. The delegation visited a local wildlife

park where they had the chance to see and interact with iconic Australian animals. Attendees were delighted to observe koalas snoozing in the eucalyptus trees and to get up close with energetic kangaroos. These encounters offered memorable moments and fostered a deeper understanding of Australia's rich biodiversity.

Harmohan Singh Walia, a respected community leader, was among the recipients of the GOPIO International Community Service awards. Though he did not attend the convention to receive his award personally, his contributions to the community were acknowledged and celebrated during the dinner. Walia’s dedication to service exemplifies the spirit of GOPIO’s mission to foster unity and development among people of Indian origin worldwide.

A Memorable Conclusion

This trip marked the final leg of the delegation’s Australian journey, which began with visits to Brisbane and other cities. The Sydney visit showcased the country’s natural wonders and vibrant community and reinforced the bonds of friendship and collaboration among GOPIO members. As the delegation prepared to depart, camaraderie and shared purpose remained strong, promising continued engagement and community-building efforts.

the meeting discussed and approved amendments to GOPIO’s constitution and bylaws, including new membership fee structures designed to boost membership. The new rates ranged from US$1,500 for Silver Life Members to US$10,000 for Corporate Members, with benefits outlined for each category.

The assembly also opened the floor for nominations for the chairs and co-chairs of various GOPIO councils, including the Human Rights, Cultural, Academic, Health & Wellness, Youth, Women, Media, Science & Technology, and Seniors Councils. Interested members submitted their nominations, sharing their visions for the councils’ growth over the next two years.

The meeting unanimously reappointed Thomas Abraham as the Chairperson for the next two years and thanked him for his guidance and magnificent leadership.

The meeting also marked the GOPIO Chamber of Commerce

and Industry's (GCCI) relaunch. The initiative aims to establish chapters in cities with sizable Indian communities to connect over 4 million small and medium businesses. Interested individuals were encouraged to contact President Prakash Shah for involvement.

In closing, Umesh Chandra expressed his heartfelt thanks to all members for their support and trust. He conveyed his commitment to advancing GOPIO’s mission and looked forward to continued collaboration and progress.

In addition, the trip to Fiji marked a historic milestone for GOPIO International as our first high-profile delegation to the Pacific region. The trip was nothing short of a tremendous success. Thanks to meticulous planning and the support of our partners, the trip proceeded smoothly and without a glitch. We are incredibly grateful to Investment Fiji for their invaluable assistance and to the Indian High Commission in Fiji, the Deputy Prime Ministers, the Girmit Council of Fiji, and Trade and Investment Fiji for their warm hospitality and collaboration. Their support made this trip a memorable and meaningful experience for all involved, strengthening our ties and opening new avenues

for cooperation and cultural exchange.

Please accept my apologies for the delay in publishing this bulletin. The past few weeks have been demanding due to pressing commitments and unforeseen circumstances, but I am committed to ensuring that future issues are timely and comprehensive. I am also aware of numerous new appointments within GOPIO, which are exciting developments.
