can be harnessed for the betterment of society, providing a platform for innovative ideas and solutions.

In addition to the future technologies segment, the convention will feature a Track Two session coordinated by a dynamic trio: Aprana Hebbani, Vasu Pawar, and Jayshiri. A Focus on Empowerment: Hon. Sashi Kiran’s Engagement

A significant highlight of the convention is the participation of Hon. Sashi Kiran, the Minister of Women, Children, and Social Protection from Fiji. The Honorable Minister brings a wealth of experience in social empowerment, having dedicated over 25 years to developing programs that address communities' social, economic, environmental, and health needs. Her passion for consultation and dialogue has led to identifying critical gaps and implementing

comprehensive programs to uplift those in need.

Under her leadership, initiatives have successfully leveraged individuals' skills and strengths, resulting in various livelihood programs that have positively impacted countless lives. Notably, her team rose to the occasion during the pandemic, supporting over 22,000 families, eight orphanages, and approximately 100 schools. Their commitment to service included distributing food, PPEs, and mobility equipment, as well as facilitating small grants that enabled more than a hundred families to establish their livelihood options.

The collaboration with other civil society organisations and donors during this challenging time further exemplifies the power of partnership in addressing community needs. The Honorable Minister’s presence at the convention underscores the importance of dialogue and learning in pioneering peace journeys across cultures.

CELEBRATING INCLUSION AND DIVERSITY: GOPIO CANBERRA’S ACHIEVEMENTS

Recently, Nishi Puri, President of the GOPIO Canberra and MAC, received a prestigious award from the Council on the Ageing (COTA) for promoting inclusion and diversity. This recognition underscores the organization's commitment to supporting seniors through its weekly groups, run in collaboration with MCCI and Carers ACT. Since 2022, these groups have provided seniors with a welcoming space to connect, interact, and participate in activities such as yoga, meditation, light exercises, and excursions, fostering community and well-being.

Let's Stop at the Start Campaign

In addition to these efforts, Nishi Puri also spearheaded the fifth phase of the "Let’s Stop at the Start" campaign, aimed at addressing and challenging disrespectful behaviors that influence young people's attitudes toward gender equality. This vital initiative encourages open conversations among Australians about respect and gender equality.

An engaging workshop was organized, facilitated by Keshavi from Cultural Perspectives, which served as a powerful eye-opener for many participants. The session emphasized recognizing when behaviours deviate from

the principles of equality and inspired attendees to consider ways to promote gender equality without discrimination.

The event was further enriched by the presence of former MLA Ms. Nicole Lawder and MLA Ms. Chiaka Barry, highlighting the importance of community involvement in these discussions. Nishi Puri, also a member of the Multicultural Influencer Collective, stressed the urgency of teaching children the values

of respect and equality from an early age to foster a more inclusive future.

This initiative was particularly focused on the

Diaspora and CALD community, reinforcing the message that promoting respect and equality is a shared responsibility that begins at home. Through these

impactful programs, GOPIO and MAC continue to champion the cause of inclusion and diversity, paving the way for a more equitable society.

GLOBAL INDIANS HEADING FOR DOWN UNDER

SOUTH AFRICA MAKES THE CUT IN NEW-LOOK GOPIO INTERNATIONAL

Left of What's Right: By

The Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO International) has elected a new leadership team to champion the political, social, and economic interests of over 25 million expatriates and economic migrants worldwide – including South Africa.

This influential US-based lobbying movement, deeply rooted in India, is entering a new era, with its inaugural test being the upcoming convention in Brisbane, Australia, from 28–30 March , followed by a three-nation inaugural tour to New Zealand and Fiji.

Notably, South Africa has secured a significant position in this leadership shift with the election of business entrepreneur Ishwar Ramlutchman. Also known as Prince Mabheka Zulu due to his affiliation with the Zulu royal family, Ramlutchman has garnered widespread recognition as president of the Sivananda World Peace Foundation. His decade-long commitment to hosting the United Nations-declared International Day of Yoga at the Durban Amphitheatre, drawing thousands across racial lines, cemented his credibility among GOPIO’s voting members,

including life members.

A Global Platform with a Growing African Presence: GOPIO International, established in 1989 at the First Global Convention of People of Indian Origin in New York City, was originally created to address human rights issues affecting Indianorigin communities abroad. Over time, it expanded to focus on community development, cultural exchange, and cooperation among the global Indian diaspora. With significant presence in both the U.S. and India, it has evolved into a crucial platform for addressing diaspora concerns worldwide.

The election, conducted via online balloting, marks a revitalization of GOPIO following the COVID-19 pandemic’s disruption of its activities. Ramlutchman, as the newly appointed International Coordinator for Africa, now faces the challenge of expanding the organization’s footprint within Southern Africa. His mandate includes setting up GOPIO chapters in Zimbabwe, Botswana, Mozambique, and Tanzania, while also fostering closer ties with Mauritius, which has a predominantly Indian-origin population of one million, alongside

Seychelles and Réunion. These Southern African Development Community (SADC) nations have seen an influx of three million Indians since the 1990s.

GOPIO’s Evolution and Leadership Shift: GOPIO’s founding chairman, Dr Thomas Abraham, a key figure since the organization’s USA-led inception, will continue to serve in an advisory role under the newly elected executive committee. The leadership team includes:

· Prakash Shah (New Jersey, USA) – President, a seasoned leader who previously chaired the New Jersey Development Authority and played a pivotal role in the 2024 New Jersey convention.

· Umesh Chandra (Brisbane, Australia) – Executive VicePresident, a media and community leader heading the Local Organising Committee for the Brisbane convention.

· Kewal Kanda (Los Angeles, USA) – Vice-President, bringing extensive community leadership experience.

· Jasbir “Nami” Kaur (New York, USA) – Global Ambassador, a former IBM official and social activist.

· Ishwar Ramlutchman (South Africa) and Dhiraj Ahuja (South Asia) – International Coordinators, responsible for

strengthening GOPIO’s reach in their respective regions.

The election process was overseen by senior GOPIO members Mridul Pathak, Dinesh Mittal, Manohar Dev, and Prashant Gupta, ensuring a smooth and transparent transition.

My Journey with GOPIO: My introduction to GOPIO dates back to the 1990s in Durban during South Africa’s transition to democracy. At the time, the South African chapter was led by the late Professor Fatima Meer, an esteemed anti-apartheid activist, Nelson Mandela’s biographer, and sociologist who documented the history of Indian migration to South Africa since the arrival of indentured laborers in 1860. Her leadership helped establish a strong presence for GOPIO in the country. I formally joined GOPIO International in 2012 in New York and became a life member at the 2015 convention in Queens. Over the years, I served as chair of the Media Council, witnessing firsthand the organization’s global impact in advocating for the diaspora’s interests.

The Brisbane Convention and Future Roadmap: GOPIO International’s upcoming convention in Brisbane aims to engage more young people globally, ensuring the movement remains relevant in a rapidly changing technological landscape. The agenda includes two key tracks: Track 1: Diaspora’s Role in Shaping Future Technologies (28 March)

· Artificial Intelligence (AI), Quantum Computing, and the Internet of Things (IoT)

· Nanotechnology, Advanced Materials, and Electronic/ Photonic Devices

· Pharmaceutical and Food Supplements

· Medical Devices and Biomedical Innovations

· Energy Generation and Storage Devices

Track 2: General Conference Sessions (28 March)

· NRIs and PIOs Collaborating to Achieve Common Goals

· Diaspora Women’s Contributions Across Various Sectors

· GOPIO Academic Council Roundtable

· Diaspora Youth & Young Achievers: Their Role in the Diaspora Movement

Following the conference, GOPIO delegates will embark on a specially curated tour of Fiji, New Zealand, and Sydney from March 31 to April 6, providing an opportunity for networking and cultural exchange.

Looking Ahead: With a rejuvenated leadership team, GOPIO International is poised to strengthen its global advocacy efforts while fostering economic and cultural ties among people of Indian origin worldwide. Ramlutchman’s role as Africa’s coordinator presents an exciting opportunity for expanding GOPIO’s presence in a region with a growing Indian diaspora.

As the organisation continues to evolve, it remains a crucial platform for dialogue, empowerment, and progress. Whether through policy advocacy, technological discussions, or cultural networking, GOPIO International’s work is shaping

the future of the Indian diaspora across the globe. For the record, there are two other splinter blocs of the original organisation, founded by dissident senior members. However, this movement remains stronger and most influential especially with the White House, UK, Mauritius and SA governments and leading blue-chip corporates and Indian-origin CEOs.

COMMUNITY FEEDING PROGRAM BY GOPIOMANHATTAN: A HEARTFELT INITIATIVE

On January 27th, the GOPIO-Manhattan chapter continued its tradition of compassion and service by hosting a Community Feeding Program at Tompkins Square Park in Manhattan, New York City. This month’s program served a warm vegetarian lunch to over 60 needy individuals, demonstrating the chapter's commitment to supporting the local community.

The event was particularly special as Board Member Raj Panjabi of Queens sponsored it in loving memory of his late father, Shri Nawal Kishore Panjabi. This gesture highlights the

opportunity for individuals to honour their loved ones by sponsoring a meal in their memory or celebrating birthdays.

The nutritious meals are prepared with care by volunteers from Interfaith Services, using a nearby kitchen. While sponsors are encouraged to participate by serving the food, it is not a requirement. The sponsorship fee for providing the ingredients is a modest $300, making it accessible for those who wish to contribute.

If you want to sponsor a future meal, contact Program Chair and Chapter Vice

President Dr. Vimal Goyle at 316-371-7098 or email info@gopiomanhattan. org. The GOPIO-Manhattan chapter began this noble initiative in December 2020, holding the feeding program on the last Monday of each month.

For those who wish to make a difference and sponsor a meal, please visit the link provided to make your contribution.
