ROD FABRICIUS

Rob Fabricius stepped down as Goodwood Racecourse’s managing director after 28 years at the course following Goodwood’s final fixture of 2010 on October 10. He was appointed in the autumn of 1982 and recalls that, at his interview, racecourse chairman the Duke of Richmond’s opening question was “What newspaper do you read?”. The sensible answer might have been The Times or The Telegraph but Rod instantly replied “The Sporting Life”. This had the desired effect and he was hired on the spot. Having served his apprenticeship in racing administration at Haydock Park, Chepstow, Lingfield Park and Aintree, he threw himself into his new role. He developed Goodwood to rival the industry leaders of Ascot, Newmarket and York, with major changes to the race programme and the racecourse fabric. His greatest gift was one of inclusion. So often racecourse changes affect one section to the detriment of another but at Goodwood, everyone from owners, trainers, jockeys and administrators to the racegoing public and the media, felt the benefits. He was a driving force behind the setting up of broadcaster Racing UK at a time when the fledgling satellite coverage of racing seemed in danger of disappearing, Now a non-executive director of Goodwood Racecourse, he remains as passionate as ever about getting racing’s message out to the wider world.
