Ken Sowman
was born and raised in Barrie, Ont. Attending Oakley Park School, North Collegiate and Georgian College. Staying close to home, he worked in sales and marketing in Barrie and surrounding areas before becoming a Realtor. What’s Your Main Service/Specialty? I’ve been in business for almost 30 years so I’ve pretty much done it all. But right now my business is split three ways between portraiture, fine art and commercial photography. When Did You Start Your Business? I started photographing professionally in 1988. I also worked at a portrait/wedding studio for 6 years but have been on my own for almost 20 years now. People Are Surprised To Know: That I have four dogs, three of them Jack Russell Terriers. Believe me, 3 Jacks make a “full house”. Where Did You Receive Training? I learned a lot when I worked at the other studio, but I also attended many workshops and seminars. I was awarded the Master of Photographic Arts from the Professional Photographers of Canada and currently am a Master Member in Fine Art of the Master Photographers of Canada, where I also sit on the Board of Directors. I never stop learning, but I’ve also taught photography and fine art printing. Describe Your Business Vibe: Because we do a variety of work, the ‘vibe’ changes from shoot to shoot. I could be photographing a company president for their annual report in the morning, a dog portrait in the afternoon, followed by a catalogue shoot the next morning and family or kids that afternoon. You have to be flexible and adapt to the changing conditions and personalities. What Inspired You To Explore Your Field? I’ve always had an interest in photography. My father had a part-time studio while working in the Army and I guess I picked up the passion from him. I have a photo, it’s on my website, of me at about 2 or 3 years old holding a camera not a toy either! It’s been part of me all my life. It’s not just what I do, it’s who I am.

This three-level, 2,700 square foot Muskoka home replaced the original cottage which stood on the vast lot for over 50 years.
The interior walls were given a neutral palette, with large plank hardwood floors throughout the home. Much of the furniture and décor was selected by Urban Rustic Living, a Huntsville-based home décor business, the owners hired to complete the space. While the husband loved the natural look of wood, his wife loved a more modern, contemporary look. So they met halfway and mixed metals and woods throughout.

The owner of this rustic 4,500 square-foot masterpiece was able to drastically open up the space by using timber frame (or post and beam) construction. The home is divided into two sides with the custom kitchen built right in the middle, directly over the foyer. When Akiko Currie opened her architectural firm, FORMWORKS Inc. Architects, in 1989, she never dreamed that 25 years later she and her husband, Keith, would also be selling unique art objects, furniture, and oneof-a-kind pieces of home décor furnishings from their Collier Street, Barrie location. But that’s exactly what happened when they opened the doors to the design boutique, Red Fox Kitsune, in May. Kitsune pronounced (Kee-tsu-neh) is the Japanese word for fox. Stories depict them as intelligent beings, possessing magical abilities that increase with their age and wisdom. The Kitsune is an important animal in Japanese mythology - a shape shifter, changing forms to become human and generally considered to be a good omen. According to Currie, these were all great characteristics for their newest venture. And, for fans of the 1970s TV series Sanford and Son starring Red Foxx, the name Red Fox Kitsune seemed a fitting homage. Combining Akiko’s architectural talents with the Currie’s combined passions for design, fun and all things interesting, Red Fox Kitsune became home to an eclectic array of beautiful, unusual, and inspirational surroundings for the home or office. Although her Asian roots have clearly influenced her style, as evidenced by some of the décor, such as the sliding barn door with charred wood design, she is quick to point out she finds inspiration everywhere. Her goal is to share those finds and her love of design with everyone.
