ANCHORMEN WIN THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS! The Anchormen is a charity based in Elland providing music and dance classes for the local community. They are now recruiting for new dance members to join. Girls and boys aged 7 upwards are invited, no experience is necessary. The Anchormen dance groups are having a tremendous 2018 season. The Cadets, with their James Bond themed show, are undefeated in all competitions and have gained their 5th WGUK British Championships title.

INTRODUCING BARKISLAND ACTIVE TOGETHER Barkisland Active Together is the new name for Barkisland Old People’s Welfare Committee, which hosts events for the over 65’s in Barkisland. One of the organisers Michele Gallagher told us, “The primary focus of the group is to promote friendships, social interaction and contribute to the wellbeing of the local community.

However, the needs of the different generations over 65 have changed and we want to give the group a new lease of life. Our group currently hosts the Get Together Club on Wednesdays (1.30pm-3.30pm) at Barkisland Cricket Club and we plan to expand our range of activities and events to cater for different age ranges and needs. We are currently gathering feedback about activities and events for the over 65s, so if you have any ideas, please get in touch. We would also like to hear from anyone in the community able to provide any activities.”

It’s Dark Outside, So Pick Up Your Paddle

“I’m in the centre of London ...

No traffic, no street beer din, no synched steps of business folk rushing for the train… I can breathe. The air here has rarely felt so clean; I’ve never seen the city with so much sky.” So writes blogger Sam Haddad on the website mpora. com, describing his night-time journey along the Thames in – of all things – a kayak.

Sam is just one of a growing number of outdoor adventurers who like to explore the UK’s rivers, lakes and coastal waters by kayak as night falls. It’s one of those off-the-wall activities that have recently grown in popularity and are particularly favoured by social media users looking for quirky and unusual experiences to post on Facebook or Instagram.

The Oxford Dictionary defines a ‘kayak’ as “a canoe of a type used originally by the Inuit, made of a light frame with a watertight covering having a small opening in the top to sit in”. Kayaks are light, manoeuvrable and hard to capsize, but to the average landlubber a kayak may not seem the obvious choice for a nocturnal adventure in a busy waterway. It’s hard to understand the attraction of 16

this type of transport until you hear the first-hand accounts of people who have actually experienced night kayaking: “It was like a dream” …“We couldn’t stop talking about our experience for days” …

Don’t underrate the risks Despite being an enthusiastic proponent of night-kayaking, experienced sea kayaker Duncan Smith is aware of the dangers: “On nights where the moon is not providing natural light you are more reliant on your night vision. This can be cut dramatically by the glare from any head-torch or deck light you carry and whilst you can see into the distance … it can be difficult to see/read the water in front of you.” He adds: “Sound seems amplified in the dark, to the point when tiny waves breaking on the pebbled shore can sound like huge, dumping surf.”

Dipping your toe in the water If you’re keen to try kayaking by night but have never used a kayak before, you should take your first trip under the guidance of an experienced leader. Organised excursions

are available across the UK, with many different experiences to choose from. Most excursions include instructions on how to handle a kayak, but if you’re in any doubt about whether the route is suitable for you, you should check with the operator prior to booking.

Join a club If you are already familiar with kayaks but have never ventured out at night, you could join a club for support, companionship and advice.

There are numerous kayak clubs throughout Britain – contact the British Canoeing Union (britishcanoeing.org. uk) to find your nearest group, but be aware that not all clubs practice kayaking after dark.

When you read the testimonials of people who have experienced night-kayaking, it’s easy to understand why it creates such a sense of awe and wonder. Noisy daytime environments become peaceful, skies become bigger and familiar landscapes take on an eerie new beauty. But most seasoned kayakers will also admit to enjoying the moment when they reach dry land, looking forward to the chance to warm up over a pint in a cosy local pub.

‘One every 2 hours’ - Andy’s Man Club Do you know what the biggest killer of males under the age of 45 is? It’s the men themselves. Three

times as many men die by suicide as women and often it is without any external signs that it will happen. One every two hours.

Andy’s Man Club was established in Halifax in July 2016 by Luke Ambler after the loss of brother-in-law Andrew Roberts without warning to suicide. The group’s aim is to give men a safe space to come and chat to other men, with the aim of showing that #ITSOKAYTOTALK. Andy’s Man Club is still centred in Halifax and works entirely through volunteers. After its original success Luke wanted more clubs to exist around the country. He set himself a target of having ten clubs running within a five year period. In less than two years there are already fifteen clubs nationally, with two in Scotland, one in Devon and another in Hartlepool. Andy’s Man Club is now expanding into prisons and colleges as well as towns and cities around the country and even overseas to Canada and Australia.

“For me it was never just about a campaign of awareness,” said Luke when I spoke to him. “It’s about doing what we can do and establishing a platform to get men talking.” Luke now devotes his time to speaking to affected groups and growing the network of clubs as his role as Chair of Trustees and was travelling to a prison to speak to a group of men when I spoke to him.

“We facilitate peer to peer support groups across the UK,” explained Luke. “We provide a confidential and safe space for any man to attend (over the age of 18). There is no registration process, no signing in, no professionals involved and no fee to attend. All you have to do is turn up on a Monday evening at 7pm.” Andy’s Man Club always starts at 7pm on a Monday (excepting Bank holidays) wherever in the country you are. “We are there for any man to come along for a brew and a chat, discussing anything you would like to get off of your chest through peer support. It’s just like minded men helping each other through tough times through shared experiences.”

The club will celebrate the second anniversary of their launch in Halifax later this month on Saturday 30th June, 6pm at the Shay. All are welcome - men, women and children and in particular those who have been involved with and worked with the group over the last couple of years. There will food, music, games and more. Andy’s Man Club meets on Monday evenings weekly at the Shay Stadium and in Hebden Bridge at the Town Hall. The Halifax meeting has over fifty men coming along on a single night and nationally over 200 men are now attending Andy’s Man Club each week. That has to be a good thing. BOWLED OVER BY SUE Ripponden Park Bowling Club is going from strength to strength as demonstrated when over twenty members competed in their first floodlit competition of the year. The winner was Sue Griffiths who bowled superbly throughout defeating several more fancied players on the way. During the summer many competitions are held for the club members at regular intervals and this popular sport is a great way to meet up with friends and to make many more new ones. WW1 MEMORIAL APPEAL Since the launch of the appeal for support in the March issue of Go Local, the Friends of Sowerby Bridge Station have now raised just over £3,500 towards the cost of providing a new bronze WWI Memorial at the station. The Memorial will record the names of the 42 former local railwaymen of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway who lost their lives in the First World War, and will be in place for an official “unveiling” ceremony on 11th November 2018.

Thanks go to everyone who has so far donated to this project and especially to Arriva Rail North (Northern), The Association of Community Rail Partnerships (ACoRP) and Calderdale Council (Ward Forum Grant) for their major contributions. However, they are still someway short of their target and require further support. HALIFAX MINSTER SUMMER FESTIVAL This summer sees eleven days of an eclectic mix of events at Halifax Minster. The wonderful array of music, art, poetry and tours starts on Thursday 29th June continuing through two weekends before finishing on Sunday 8th July. Music leads the way in the awe-inspiring setting of the Halifax Minster with choirs, organ recitals, Brass band concerts, orchestras and acoustic harmonies plus much more. Trinity Academy’s art exhibition kicks off the festival on Thursday 29th June where local artistic talent returns after being so popular last year. Friday 30th has an evening tour of the minster showcasing local historical characters. Tuesday 4th July sees local school children visit the minster to create poetry under the watchful eye of a visiting professional poet. Mack and Mabel Mack and Mabel is a saga of the silent film era “when movies were movies”, the story of legendary director Mack Sennett and his greatest star, the adorable Mabel Normand. Mack, the narrator of the show, a

broken man made obsolete by talkies, tells the story in flashbacks. He reminisces about the past, recalling his triumphs and his turbulent love affair with Mabel whom he had made a star. He loves her, but cannot tell her, sending her into the arms of a rival movie producer who leads her into a world of drink and drugs.

The show opened on Broadway in October 1974 and it was first produced in the UK at Nottingham Playhouse in 1981. Soon after this, Nottingham based ice skaters Torville and Dean chose the overture to the show for their gold medal World Figure Skating Championship winning routine.

Written by Jerry Herman of Hello Dolly and La Cage Aux Folles fame, this is his favourite show with such classic songs as, I Won’t Send Roses,

All hands to the pump at Fire and Water Our Rick Kemp event on 27th April was wellattended and a great success. Thank you to all who helped organise it including Bryan, Sheila, Dave, Jane, John and Shirty, thanks to David (EPS) for the heater and to Rick for a very enjoyable evening.

We want to run more small scale events as often as possible, but this depends on your suggestions and your willingness to be involved. If you have an event in mind musical, an art installation, an exhibition, a workshop, a birthday party or anything else, please talk to us and we’ll see if it can be accommodated.

DIY SESSIONS: The next sessions will continue where we recently left off – installing a toilet, water and electrical services. We need people with some joinery skills and if there’s an electrician out their willing to give us expert help, please get in touch. As always, whatever we do is on an extremely limited budget, so if there are suppliers out there willing to donate timber, sheeting, wiring, etc, please let us know. The DIY work is a very important aspect of the overall project and we need as much help as possible, so please email phil.hawdon@hawdonrussell.co.uk or phone 01422 834291 with your availability.

PLANNING APPLICATION: At the time of writing the planning application for the whole of the project is with Calderdale Council and you can see the details by searching the planning website under ref 18/00002/CON. So far we have had a great deal of support and the only hurdle is to do with satisfying the Environment Agency on the issue of flood risk – we’re working on it! At a community level this could be one of the most important planning applications for Sowerby Bridge so, if you haven’t already sent in your support, please do so without delay.

Owing to the new General Data Protection Regulations and our decision to move to an Annual Membership system you can still renew your membership after 25th May, but you will have to contact us because the old members’ list will not be available. Puzzle solved!

The campaign to buy the Puzzle Hall Inn, Sowerby Bridge has been successful after a long campaign!

The community group bought the pub on the 6th April for ÂŁ66,250 and have already set things in motion to get the pub re-opened. The board would like to thank all the investors, supporters and friends for their amazing efforts in making this happen.

Plans to refurbish the pub are well underway with an architect commissioned to establish what improvements can be made before the grand re-opening. Once refurbished, a manager will run the community -owned pub, supported by the board of directors. The Puzzle will be a community hub, with improved disabled and dementia-friendly access, business networking, community gardens, music and skills workshops, multicultural

events and, of course, the legendary Puzzfest music festivals. And, letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not forget, good beer and good cheer!

Coconut Seafood Curry Serves 4

Ready in 50 minutes

Full of flavour, this speedy curry is great for a summer supper. Replace the asparagus tips with green beans or sugar snap peas, if liked. Serve with boiled noodles or steamed Thai jasmine rice.

• 1tbsp vegetable oil • 8 shallots, peeled and halved • 2-3 tbsp Thai green curry paste (see Tip) • 225g new potatoes, scrubbed and halved • 1 large carrot, peeled and thinly sliced • 400ml can reduced fat coconut milk • 150ml vegetable stock • 2tbsp light soy sauce • 450g cod fillet, skinned and cut into chunks • 175g fine asparagus tips • Juice from 1 lime • 200g cooked tiger prawns, thawed if frozen • 2tbsp freshly chopped coriander • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • Chopped red chilli and fresh coriander leaves, to garnish

Heat the oil in a large deep frying pan over a medium heat and fry the shallots for 5 minutes until golden. Stir in the Thai green curry paste and cook for 1 minute.

Add the potatoes, carrot, coconut milk, stock and soy sauce. Simmer for 10-15 minutes until the vegetables are almost tender.

Add the chunks of cod and asparagus tips to the pan. Cover and simmer gently for a further 6-8 minutes until the fish is just cooked and beginning to flake.

Gently stir in the lime juice, tiger prawns and chopped coriander. Simmer for 5 minutes until the prawns are piping hot, then season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve in warmed bowls garnished with chopped chilli and coriander leaves.

TIP Brands of Thai green curry paste can vary in spiciness so check on the jar before adding. If you want a really fiery flavour, fry 1 chopped small red chilli pepper with the shallots.

Focus on: Knee Injuries A really common knee injury we see is one to the medial collateral ligament or MCL for short. It is typically injured by twisting the knee or by receiving a blow to the outside of the knee forcing the knee to open out on the inside. This is a common movement in winter sports such as rugby and football and it is also a very common skiing injury where the ski gets stuck and the leg twists on top of it.

Pain usually occurs at the time of the injury and the person may have heard a ‘popping’ noise.

Absence of pain does not exclude a severe injury as minor injuries are often more painful than major injuries.

The ability to walk may be impaired after an MCL injury. Swelling however is unusual unless the person has sustained a more extensive injury damaging the meniscus (discs of cartilage) as well.

The knee will be painful on the inside aspect of the knee and tender over the injury site.

Sometimes injuries to the meniscus and the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) can occur at the same time so any knee injury should be seen by a physiotherapist as soon as possible so an accurate diagnosis can be made and appropriate treatment started. Most MCL injuries respond really well to physiotherapy so don’t hesitate to give us a call.

First computer navigated reverse shoulder replacement Living with arthritis isn't easy and carrying out simple, everyday tasks can often be painful and difficult.

Shoulder replacement surgery for arthritis is not as well-known as hip or knee replacements. However,in the past few years, techniques have progressed and the procedure is becoming much more common.

Mr Balachandran Venkateswaran, a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon became the first surgeon in Yorkshire to perform a computer navigated reverse shoulder replacement at Spire Elland Hospital in January 2018.

Computer navigation enables the accurate placement of implants and screws in the bone, which improves the quality of the surgery with excellent results and function.

The shoulder is a complex joint as it allows a significant range of movement in a relatively unconstrained bony area. This in turn makes replacement technically challenging. In more deformed and eroded arthritic joints, the computer navigation helps in planning the operation with the assistance of a CT scan. The consultant can then determine

which kind of shoulder replacement implant will be best suited to the particular patient, as arthritis causes differing bone deterioration in each patient.

During surgery the computer accurately guides the consultant to the exact placement of screws and components, especially on the glenoid (the part of scapula bone articulating with arm bone to form shoulder joint) which is complex and sometimes thinned from arthritis.

Acrylic paints are ideal to colour a boring or discoloured container. Use a single colour to match existing garden features, or the colour of your front door or window frames, or design a pattern of wild, fantastic colours for a plantedup art gallery.

Colourful containers are a welcome sight in any garden, and pots, planters and troughs can transform a dull back yard or a gloomy terrace or patio.

Plus, wacky and more unusual planters can easily be created with a little imagination and ingenuity.

Plastic flower pots can be transformed by wrapping them in hessian. Available in a range of colours from classic pale brown to reds, greens and blues, it’s weather-tolerant and tough but looks great.

Plastic pots are more exciting with a bit of planting around the sides, so cut holes just over an inch in diameter at regular intervals around the sides to create a planter perfect for small bedding plants. Fill with compost to the base of the lowermost holes, add plants through the holes, add more compost to the next

Mosaic tiles from your local craft or hobby store can be used to cover a container, or if time is short to just make a mosaic rim. Use rich colours to make a Moroccan style pot.

Protect it when winter comes by placing it in a frost-free spot, unless you use the grouting adhesive used for swimming pools to make it more weather resistant.

Old tyres filled with compost make ideal planters, and can be stacked to make deeper versions. Trailing flowers – such as trailing geraniums – cascading over the edges give a really striking effect.

An aged wheelbarrow is great for a larger display or permanent planting. If there are no holes in the pan of the barrow, place a layer of gravel or stones in the base so that the compost does not become waterlogged.

An old wellington boot makes a stylish planter. Fill the foot and ankle area with gravel or

grit for drainage, add compost and plant up the top. Acrylic paints can jazz up a boring pair of wellies, but make sure the paint is dry before you start planting.

Old gardening, walking or work boots have planting potential too, and because they have heavier soles and are lower to the ground they are useful in a less-sheltered place. Plant up with bright bedding, or for a long-term display use a few house-leeks or sempervivums – their fleshy rosettes of leaves in shades of green and purple look great!

An old kitchen or bathroom sink can be put to good use; either remove the plug to provide drainage or fix it firmly in place with sealant to make a miniature water garden.

I’ve even seen a loo cistern packed full of trailing plants including blue and white lobelia and trailing silvery foliage plants. The mass of blue, white and silver made a great waterfall of colour from an otherwise boring water closet.

Ian was such a lovely humble man. His work Is very genuine. My parents had there carpets cleaned by him and he did such a great job! At a very good price too! We are truly happy with his work and will defiantly be using his services again in the future.

Images of the Past – Ripponden Celebrates

The image shows the coronation of King George V on 23 June 1911. The occasion gave the good people of Ripponden another opportunity to celebrate. The village is festooned with Union Jacks and bunting, and following a service at St. Bartholomew’s church, a mass singing of hymns was held in the centre of the village.
