WELCOME TO OUR MAY EDITION! It's my favourite time of year with bluebells, lighter evenings, two bank holidays and the promise of summer to come (I’m ever hopeful).

There’s no excuse to be bored this month with a whole host of happenings; the Ripponden food festival will not leave you hungry, the Tour de Yorkshire bikes into the Piece Hall, the annual Overgate Garden party delivers a fabulous family day out, a Classic Bike show roars into Sowerby Bridge, Square Chapel hosts its first 'Up North' film festival and it's all wrapped up at the beginning of June with the Brighouse 1940s weekend. Details of all these events and more are in this month’s mag.

5K SANDBAG CHALLENGE Are you and two mates up to taking on the 5k Sandbag Challenge?

You'll have to work together as a team to carry one 20kg sandbag around a 5k route as quickly as possible. The race starts at the newly refurbished Rose & Crown, Greetland and takes you through picturesque woods and back again. Not that you’ll have the energy to take in the scenery. However, there will be a post-race ‘big do’ at the Rose and Crown to aid recovery.

Your effort won’t be in vain; 1VIGOR are raising funds for a publicly situated defibrillator to be located on Victoria Street, West Vale.

To enter a team of three it’s just £30, and all money goes to the fund. Everyone is welcome to join in. If you’re interested or if you would like to donate then email Ross at ross@1vigor.co.uk HIGHBURY ARE HAVING A BALL Highbury School quickly captures the hearts of all those who encounter its pupils, staff and environment. The specialist school in Brighouse caters for children aged 3-11 with complex learning needs and disabilities. Supporting the children, parents/carers and staff when raising and teaching children with disabilities is challenging. From acquiring the specialist equipment through to helping provide much the needed support for families and the costs rise enormously.

Funding is always sought after; the commitment from the wider community and monies raised are greatly appreciated. One of this year’s fund-raising activities is the Friends of Highbury Charity Ball on  Saturday 11th May at The Venue, Barkisland. It’s a black tie event, with red carpet arrival, three course meal, auction and live band; all proceeds go to the charity. They meet on the last Wednesday of the month in the Langdale Rooms at Southgate Methodist Church Elland. The aim of the group is to promote fellowship and friendship. There are a variety of speakers to broaden members' knowledge on a wide range of subjects, and something that is of interest to everyone.

The club are a friendly group of ladies and serve coffee before the meeting at 10am where there's a chance to have a chat with each other before settling down into the meeting proper.

The committee would like to welcome anyone who would like to come along as a guest to try them out! There would be no pressure to join, so if you didn't feel able to come regularly that would be a personal choice.

BRIGHOUSE 1940S WEEKEND On  Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd June from 10am to 4pm, Brighouse traders are hosting a 1940s weekend. The event takes place in and around the town centre. Step back in time with re-enactors, vintage vehicles, Living History displays, live entertainment and a Vintage and Artisan market. There will be 2 stages for outdoor entertainment, on Saturday and Sunday afternoon there will be free music and dancing with A-Train Swing. On Saturday evening there will be a 1940s dance at the Civic Hall from 7pm featuring Ashby Big Band and Kitty Lamare. Tickets for the dance are £12 from www.brighouse1940sweekend.co.uk.

TOUR DE YORKSHIRE 2019 The four-day Tour de Yorkshire will take place between  2nd to the 5th May, taking in eight start and finish locations across Yorkshire.

Halifax hosts the final decisive stage, The Yorkshire Classic, on  Sunday 5th May. The riders will roll out of the Piece Hall at 12.35pm, making their way out of the town centre to King Cross, the peloton will then make its way back towards the centre before going through Bradshaw and then out of Calderdale to where the cobbled streets of Photo c/o www.letour.yorkshire.com Haworth await them.

The two-day Tour de Yorkshire Women’s race are doing the same route as stages two and three of the men’s race; their stages will commence in the morning. For more info see www.letour.yorkshire.com WATCH OUT FOR SLEEPY HEDGEHOGS Hogs are now waking from their winter hibernation some in poor condition, it’s important to keep an eye out for them. If you find a hedgehog looking unwell the important thing is pick it up and put it in a high sided box with warmth.

Don’t give any food at this point until speaking with your local rescue who can advise. Be mindful that female hedgehogs sometimes gather nesting materials at this time of year, there may be impending litters, these female hedgehogs will act with purpose. If they are busy leave them to it. Look out for sick hogs who may have collapsed, are lying in the sun, looking confused, found on roads, gardens etc. They may be wobbly, skinny, have high tick/flea burdens, they may sound like they have been smoking too many cigarettes with chest infections or pneumonia, these hogs need help, please contact us if so at  halifaxhedgehogs

OUT AND ABOUT WITH HALIFAX SCIENTIFIC SOCIETY (HSS) An interest in the natural world and a desire to explore the local countryside are all that’s required to be part of the HSS. Hopefully spring should be well upon us and May will start with a walk at Widdop reservoir (HX7 7AZ)  Sun 5th May at 10am with some fairly tough terrain with Steve Blacksmith. There is a relaxed meeting on  Sat May 11th for those who wish to learn about wild grass and flower identification; meet at Mirey Wall Farm HX6 1NJ 10.30am.  Tues 14th May - a talk by Craig Ralston, Senior Reserve Manager about the Lower Derwent Valley. Starting and finishing at St Peter’s Community Centre in Sowerby, the multi-terrain route takes in panoramic views of Calderdale. The race is now in its 11th year and has become firmly established as a major fundraising event for St Peter’s Church, Sowerby. Runners come from all over West Yorkshire, and further afield, to take part. Many local running clubs are well-represented and include it in their yearly calendar of events. OVERGATE GARDEN PARTY Overgate Hospice Garden Party is always a great family day out. It is the charity’s longest running event, and takes place in the Hospice grounds, Elland on  Sunday 12th May from midday.

Harold the Hospice Hare will officially open the event at midday for an afternoon of entertainment for all the family. With entertainment from DJ Chester and music from local duo the Suitcase Dwellers, special guests - characters from comic books, Shetland ponies and a host of stalls, real ale and a barbeque, there’s something for everyone.

It’s a real community event with support from staff and volunteers, and also from Elland, Sowerby Bridge and Halifax Calder Rotary Clubs and the Brighouse Ladies Circle.

Rachel Lumb, Events Assistant said; ‘We are so grateful for the wealth of support we have received this year and it truly looks set to be our best Garden Party to date. Everyone is welcome

to join us for this great family day and we look forward to seeing you there.’

A BIG ANNIVERSARY FOR ELLAND'S FRENCH LINK How did the Elland-Riorges Link get its very appropriate name?

By all means use the road but watch out for the little blue kilometre sign. Its arrow is directing you the wrong way!

When David Shutt and Bernard Jayol, Councillors in Elland and Riorges, met for the first time on August 10th, 1977, poring over maps showing where their respective towns were, they were sowing the seeds of a twinning link. This year that link celebrates its 40th anniversary.

The link progressed quickly from that initial meeting at Lord (as he now is) Shutt’s house. Set up by the late Eric Kershaw, and, after preliminary visits in 1978, official twinning inaugurations took place in October that year in Riorges, and at Clay House, Greetland, in February,1979.

Intrepid pioneers from Brooksbank School, led by Thomas Wood, visited Riorges in the Spring of 1979, and a return visit followed in the Autumn, led by Roland Rebaud. These were the first of the pupil exchanges that went on for many years, later involving pupils in other Calderdale Schools, with members of the Elland-Riorges Association organising the visits.

Staying with families has been a key point with all exchanges, resulting in many long-lasting friendships. The French love Calderdale - not so sure about the weather - and they always relish such delights as Yorkshire Pudding, fish and chips and trifle. They can sing “Ilkley Moor Baht ‘at” like you’ve never heard it before! We from Elland enjoy the Riorges countryside with its picturesque villages and have never had problems tucking into croissants, crispy-crusted baguettes and copious quantities of locally-produced red wine.

Thomas Wood was the first Chairman of the Elland Association, and subsequent Chairmen have been Stuart Hodgson (1995-1996), Andrew Mattingley (1996-2010) and now Paul Cleary; in Riorges, Rene James and Elisabeth Dessaux have succeeded Roland Rebaud.

The Twinning Charter being renewed in Riorges last year by the signatures of Paul Clearly, Chairman of the Elland Association, Chris Pillai. Deputy Mayor of Calderdale, Jean-luc Chervin, Mayor of Riorges and Elisabeth Dessaux, President of the Twinning Committee Riorges

Over the years, the links have gone beyond just the annual visits, and there have been performances by rain-soaked Elland Boys’ Brigade Band near Riorges, a sponsored cycle challenge involving Elland firemen, work experience projects, art exhibition exchanges and sports team visits.

To celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the twinning, taking place between  July 6th -13th a special programme is being arranged by the Association. One of its aims being to involve members, friends and the wider local community in Elland.

Members past and present are invited to a “Meet and Greet” buffet being held at Blackley Baptist Church on  Sunday 7th July and to the Farewell Dinner being held on  Friday 12th July at the Shay Stadium.

Details of these events can be obtained from Chairman Paul Cleary on 01422 374000. The French Breakfast is a free “drop-in” event for everyone on  Friday 12th July 10am till midday at Southgate Methodist Church. This will be an opportunity for all to meet friends and sample delicious croissants, pain au chocolat and coffee.

Turn up any time between 10am and noon and sample the flavour of France. The ability to speak French is not necessary!

CLASSIC BIKE SHOW RETURNS The Rotary Club of Sowerby Bridge will be hosting their 6th Annual Classic Bike & Scooter Show on  Sunday 26th May. It has come a long way since the first show in 2014 when 41 bikes turned up on a rain soaked day in comparison to last year when over 100 bikes and scooters were exhibited. This year's event has a main sponsor, Clays Walling Groundworks Company Ltd, and the 19 class winners trophies and three best of show trophies have all been sponsored by local companies.

All profits from the show go to local Rotary Charities. Amongst those who have benefited in the past are Calder Valley Search and Rescue, Yorkshire Air Ambulance, White Windows and Overgate Hospice, to name but a few.

Each year, in addition to the bikes and scooters, there have been additional attractions, ranging from donkey rides, tribute acts and farmers market, and this year is no exception. This year there will also be The Matchstalk Men of whom two members, Brian and Michael, had a '70's No.1 hit with “Matchstalk Men Matchstalk Cats & Dogs”, appearing at the London Palladium and on Top of the Pops. In addition to this there will be a display of American Cars from the 1950's and 1960's commonly known as the 'fins and chrome' era. Some of these cars can be 18 feet (6m) in length and over 2 metres in width.

Members of the public (including children) will be invited to vote for their choice of best in show for bike and scooter and best American Car on display. There is also a free cinema continuously throughout the day showing bike and scooter

films where both exhibitors and members of the public can come and go as they please.

Another event which has proved popular has been a demonstration of Rock 'n Roll dancing with participants dressed in 50's style clothing and throughout the day there will be 50's and 60's background music played by resident DJ Jivin' Jeff.

The show has now become a major event on the biking calendar with exhibitors travelling from as far afield as County Durham, Lincolnshire, and Merseyside. Each year the event has attracted many personalities from the world of Speedway including former Halifax, Sheffield and Bradford riders at the forefront.

The show takes place at Shire Cruisers Wharf, Sowerby Bridge on  Sunday 26th May from 11am till 4pm. Admission for the event is £5 with children under 12 free of charge.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH VEGETABLE AND CHILLI NOODLE BOWLS This is a quick vegetarian supper packed with flavour! Soba noodles are Oriental noodles made from buckwheat flour. You’ll find them in most large supermarkets but if unavailable, use egg or rice noodles instead.

INGREDIENTS 1 tbsp vegetable oil 1 onion, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 2 tsp grated root ginger 1 red chilli pepper, deseeded and finely chopped 2 carrots, peeled and diced ½ aubergine, diced 1 small courgette, diced 1 red pepper, deseeded and diced 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and diced 300ml hot vegetable stock 1 tbsp soy sauce 1 tsp sesame oil 250g pack soba noodles 1-2 tsp sesame seeds Coriander sprigs, to garnish DIRECTIONS 1 Heat the vegetable oil in a large deep frying pan over a medium-high heat. Add the onion, garlic, ginger and chilli and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until tender and fragrant.

2 Add the carrots, aubergine, courgette and peppers and fry over a medium heat for 4-5 minutes, stirring frequently. Pour in the stock and simmer for a further 3-4 minutes until the

vegetables are just tender.

3 Meanwhile, cook the noodles according to the pack instructions. Drain well and toss into the vegetables along with the soy sauce and sesame oil. Divide between four warmed bowls and served sprinkled with sesame seeds and garnished with coriander sprigs.

TIP For a more substantial supper top the bowls of vegetables and noodles with slices of grilled or pan-fried firm tofu, or add some stir-fried prawns.

Rockpool Hotpot with Samphire and Wilted Spinach This delicious seasonal recipe is ready in moments, its fresh and tasty ingredients are easily sourced locally. There are some brilliant fishmongers on Albion Street, Halifax, who will be happy to help and prepare your fish if needs be.

When we’re lucky enough to get a day at the seaside we take our Hungarian cooking pot, build a fire pit and cook this dish on the beach.

Here at HQ Gimbals we have our fish delivered daily; fresh from the day boats from the East coast. We try and use sustainable, wild fish like ling, pollack, hake and Scarborough woof in our delicious hotpot. These are fearsome looking fishes, but the taste is amazing.

You may want to stick with the fish you know. Either way it’s a winner!

Fish Fact: Scarborough woof or wolf fish is named because of its prominent fanglike teeth and whiskers, like that of a wolf!

Serves 4 Ingredients All the fish needs to be skinned, boned and diced into 1 inch chunks. The choice of fish is up to you, but this is what we use: 200g hake, or any firm white fish 200g Scarborough woof 100g natural smoked haddock 100g best quality prawns 200g fresh clams steamed open and removed from the shell 01422 839 329 Open Tuesday - Saturday 6.30-9.15 (Last orders)

200g fresh mussels steamed open and removed from the shell ½ litre fish stock fresh (or supermarket) 1 glass dry white wine 1 lemon juiced 2 teaspoons fish sauce 1 bay leaf 1 star anis 1/3 block butter 1 small packet samphire 1 handful young wild spinach leaves, well washed, drained and roughly shredded.

Bring the fish stock, white wine, fish sauce, bay leaf, star anis and lemon juice up to heat. Add the raw fish, simmering gently for just a couple of minutes, testing till the fish is just cooked. Add the butter, prawns, clams, mussels and samphire and after a minute, add the spinach.

UP NORTH FILM FESTIVAL Square Chapel Arts Centre ‘Up North’ - Film & Television Festival is a month-long festival, celebrating northern voices on screen and behind the camera. The festival will run from  Friday 3rd to Wednesday 29th May. Film, stage and TV actor, Ian Puleston-Davies said: “I am excited and honoured to host the launch of the film and television festival, and if I could camp outside the building, I would, because it’s going to be a feast! As a Welshman, I feel I have found a new spiritual home at Square Chapel Arts Centre in Halifax. I have fallen in love with the people and the place.”

Ian Puleston-Davies’ career spans over 40 years across stage, film and the small screen. His work includes hit TV shows like Vera, Marcella; the longest running soap Coronation Street; popular children’s animation Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom; and recently the hit Sky Atlantic and Channel 4 series Tin Star, to name just a few.

NORTHERN VOICES: There’s no shortage of screen talent in the north and Square Chapel is bringing audiences a selection of the very best to talk about their careers on screen and behind the camera.

Guests include Leeds born and bred writer, Kay Mellor OBE in conversation on  Monday 13 May, 7.30pm. Mellor is probably best known for her work on several ground-breaking TV drama series including Fat Friends, Band of Gold and The Syndicate.

On  Wednesday 22 May, 7.30pm, audiences are invited to experience an evening with Brian Blessed - the larger than life British actor known for his hearty, kingsized portrayals on film and television. Blessed will talk about his career on stage and screen including anecdotes from Flash Gordon, Black

Adder, I Claudius and his many appearances in Shakespearean Productions.

Other special guests include Sue Hodge ( Sunday 5 May, 4pm) who will be discussing Huddersfield’s Gordon Kaye who is best known for his role as French Café Owner René in the cult TV sitcom ‘Allo ‘Allo! Sue played Mimi in the long running series and there will be a screening of the classic episode ‘The Flying Nun’.

On  Sunday 19 May at 7pm, film and comedy fans can enjoy an evening of laughter with Dave Johns who is best known for the lead role in Ken Loach’s I Daniel Blake. Audiences will enjoy a night of laughter from David and he will be joined on stage for a Q&A by Comedian Lucy Beaumont.

If that’s not enough, TV fans will love the festival’s closing event with Henry Normal  Weds 29 May, 7.30pm where they will hear stories about his incredible career from touring with Pulp to writing on The Royale Family and Mrs Merton.

Budding writers can also attend the ‘Writing comedy for TV, Film & Radio’ workshop with Henry Normal  Wednesday 29 May, 3pm.

NATIONAL WALKING MONTH May is National Walking Month, this is an annual campaign to promote the benefits of walking. Of all the types of exercise someone could take up, it is perhaps walking that is the most accessible to all regardless of current levels of fitness or of income. It’s free, suitable for any age and can be done almost anywhere - walking is the ‘no excuses’ exercise. Here are some of the whys and hows of building this great exercise into your life.

YOUR HEALTH Walking gives your leg muscles and lungs a workout; reduces stress; helps you sleep; burns excess calories; and reduces your risk of osteoporosis, cancer, depression and Type 2 diabetes. Phew, that sounds so good it should be prescribed.

You don’t have to walk miles to benefit, either.

The NHS says even just a brisk 10-minute daily walk has many health benefits, counting towards your recommended 150 minutes of weekly exercise. A brisk pace is around 3 miles an hour – if you’re relatively fit, you should still be able to talk, but not sing a song. The free NHS Active 10 app handily tells you when you're walking fast enough and suggests ways to fit in more walking.

Particularly through the late spring and summer, walking outside will top-up your levels of Vitamin D which is good for your bone health and your immune system.

BE SOCIABLE - OR GET ALONE TIME Walking can be a chance to chat with your friends and family. Nordic walking classes, a Walking for Health walk, or a walking group such as the Ramblers (formerly the Ramblers Association) are ideal if you don’t have anyone to walk with.

However, you may prefer to use walks as a chance for some time to yourself. You could listen to music which can help you get into a rhythm and walk faster. If you are concerned about wearing headphones while you walk, look at AfterShokz Bone Conduction Headphones. These sit on bones on the sides of your head but not in your ears, meaning you can still hear traffic.

RAISE MONEY FOR A GOOD CAUSE For National Walking Month, the British Heart Foundation is promoting the Just Walk initiative

to encourage you to raise money in an organised walk. Tying in with this is their Walk to School Week from the 16th to the 20th May, where they ask teachers, parents and children to put their best foot forward and walk to school each day.

HOW AND WHERE TO WALK You can either set aside time for walking or just build it into your daily routine and journeys.

Could you get the family out for an after-dinner walk or take a weekend ramble that ends at a pub or restaurant?

• Wear supportive, suitable footwear. If you are walking to work, you could take a smarter pair of shoes with you to change into.

• Stay hydrated. Always take a drink with you if you’re planning to walk for more than 20 minutes or it’s hot.

• Always consider the terrain and the weather, especially if you’re heading off the beaten track. Do you need warm and/or waterproof clothing, headgear and footwear? Do you have snacks, drinks, a first aid kit and a charged mobile phone?

An internet search will return innumerable resources to help you both start and stick with it, not just for May but throughout the year.

Your local council website and/or local library should have information about footpaths, country parks and walking routes of interest such as heritage trails.

OH, RATS…WE ALL NEED HOMES! Rats make good companions for children and adults. They are one of the cleanest pets you can own and do not pose health threats to people or other animals. However, they do need daily social interaction and at least an hour’s playtime outside their cage every day, so it is important that everyone in the family is keen on the idea of keeping rats; as well as having a safe, rat-proof environment.

Rats can be highly entertaining and are also less likely to bite than hamsters if you're deciding which of the 2 rodents to have as a pet.

The best home for your rats is a wire cage - the larger and taller the better, as rats are active and love to climb. They naturally live in social groups, so it is unfair to keep one alone. A same-sex pair or group will be much happier, and two rats don’t

cost much more to keep than one!

Rats are omnivores and love a varied diet that includes grains, vegetables and a protein source such as dry dog food.

While rats are fond of titbits and household scraps, do not let them get too fat; a fit rat is healthier and will live longer.

ELBOW DYSPLASIA IN DOGS 'Elbow dysplasia' means abnormal development of the elbow joint. This causes damage to the cartilage surface of the joint - a process called osteochondrosis or OCD. Elbow dysplasia and osteochondrosis collectively lead to the development of arthritis (osteoarthritis). Any of these three conditions may cause elbow pain.

Elbow dysplasia is a common condition, especially in large breed dogs causing stiffness and pain in the front legs. I tend to see dogs with elbow dysplasia either when the dog is immature and growing (five to eight months of age) or when adult (perhaps a few years of age) due to osteoarthritis.

On examination, swelling and restricted range of movement may be evident in the elbow. X rays are sometimes helpful but it can be difficult to see elbow dysplasia on X rays owing to overlying boney structures. CT scanning gives excellent detail of the shape (congruency) of the joint and enables detection of small bony fragments. CT is now the “gold standard” for investigating suspected cases of elbow dysplasia.

Some dogs with elbow dysplasia can be managed satisfactorily without the need for surgery.

Exercise and weight control can be sufficient to manage the condition. The Donaldson’s Vets Rehabilitation Centre at our Birchencliffe surgery is often invaluable when it comes to aiding management with hydrotherapy. Painkillers are sometimes essential, but need to be used with care as they can encourage the dog to exercise more than they are really able to.

Often surgery is required to manage these cases.

Surgical removal of flaps of cartilage of bone can sometimes dramatically improve the joint but results can be unpredictable with some dogs remaining quite lame despite surgery because of the underlying abnormal development of the joint with a poor fit to the joint or the secondary osteoarthritis.

Elbow joints are complicated structures with 3 bones forming the joint. A minor misalignment of one of those bones can have a significant disruptive effect on the joint. Fortunately with modern diagnostics and surgical options, we can now manage these cases much more effectively than used to be the case.

Local charity the Community Foundation for Calderdale is calling for businesses who are passionate about supporting our local communities, changing lives and making a difference locally to join them when they will launch the Foundation Club at Halifax Minster.

As an introductory offer, the Community Foundation for Calderdale is making available £40,000 of match funding to individuals and businesses, allowing them to increase the value of their donations to charity. MAKE IT MINIMAL For some, the ideal view from their back door is a flower-filled cottage-style garden brimming with colourful perfumed plants and flowers, buzzing with bees and with not a straight line in sight. But there is an increasing interest in a more minimalist style, where plants are grown in a much more designed situation, with straight lines aplenty but far fewer plants and yet each plant having a much greater individual impact. Here are some suggestions for achieving the effect you want.

One of the key design elements to a minimalist garden is simplicity. Decide on the plants you like that will suit your garden, and then keep the different types you use as low as possible. The biggest impact will be achieved if you use just a few, for example concentrating on ornamental grasses.

Another key to the minimalist look is clever use of straight lines, ideally with a few right angles thrown in. Edges need to be sharply defined, perhaps using sleepers or other timber, or even angled metal. Make sure that planting does not interfere with the lines created by border edging, so keep plants well back.

Colours should fit your preferences and the surroundings but restrict the number of colours for a calmer and simpler effect. Existing features such as sheds or fences can be recoloured or painted to fit in with the colour scheme – otherwise, their current colour will have to be included in that scheme.

A stunning minimalist effect can be achieved by using a single type of plant and container - for example, conifers in terracotta containers.

The only variation is in the size of the conifer: all colours, textures and plants are the same.

Buy different sizes of the same conifer type and clip regularly to maintain the size difference or buy one size and trim lightly to achieve the desired look, but remember most conifers won’t withstand hard pruning and are inclined to show their brown inner foliage if cut back too hard.

Green, in the form of foliage, helps add a feeling of tranquillity to a minimalist garden so include it, perhaps as a neatly clipped box hedging or as a few bay lollipops in angular containers.

Containers must be very plain, ideally straightsided angular styles in a single colour. An evenly spaced trio of pots, each with a single central plant, provides a perfect choice of container planting.

If you like topiary this can be a great choice but stick to simple tightly clipped spheres or ‘lollipops’, cubes or at most spirals; there is no space for a peacock, rabbit, bear or other fantastically sculptured creature if you’re going minimalist!

Plants with simple or angular shapes such as iris, alliums, conifers, clipped box, canna or palms are an excellent choice, but take a look at what is available locally and opt for any of your personal (but simple) favourites.

Grass alternatives such as gravel may feature highly. Gravel needs less maintenance than grass, but keep it weed-free and easy-care by installing a weed-membrane (rather like woven, plastic hessian) on to the soil before putting down the gravel. Thoroughly weed the area then firm and compact well before putting the fabric down.

Don’t use cheaper plastic sheeting as rain won’t penetrate.

A minimalist garden need not be just for admiring: make it so that you can sit out there and soak up the calm feeling it gives you too.

Choose simple, classically styled garden furniture with as few colours and textures as possible and the furniture won’t detract from the minimalist environment and look that you’ve achieved – so just sit back and enjoy.

QUIRKY BRITAIN - A BRIEF HISTORY OF MORRIS DANCING The tinkle of bells, the rhythmic thump of feet hitting the ground and the click of sticks struck together, all in time to the rousing music of an accordion. It’s the sound of the UK’s most ancient dance tradition.

However, while many enthusiasts see Morris dancing as a touchstone of Britain’s ancient rural culture, a little research into the history of the dance reveals some surprising theories about its origins. Most historians believe the name ‘Morris’ is derived from the word Moorish, the name given to a group of North African Muslims who ruled Spain from 711 to 1492. During the 15th century their culture inspired a fashion for exotic spectacle amongst the royal courts of Europe, when each country came up with its own unique version of a ‘Moorish’ dance.

In England the earliest written record of the Morris dance was noted down in 1448 by London’s Goldsmiths Company as a payment of seven shillings (a generous sum in those days) to the troupe of dancers who had entertained them, and documents from the court of Henry VII show that a ‘mourice dance’ was performed at Christmas in the year 1484.

By the 16th century the Moreska was no longer simply an entertainment for noblemen. Now known simply as a ‘Morris’ in Britain, the dance was considered ideal for springtime and early summer celebrations and it continued as a Whitsunday entertainment until the 17th century, when the Puritans banned all forms of public performance. King Charles II, eager to restore Britain’s much-loved rural customs, reinstated the dance and it remained popular until the Industrial Revolution, when the movement of people from rural areas to towns and cities broke up many long-established village ‘sides’. Taking ‘sides’ In the year 1934 six individual Morris sides came together to establish the Morris Ring, an organisation formed to promote and protect the dance’s ancient traditions. But in spite of evidence dating from the 16th century that women danced the Morris, the group caused controversy by not allowing women-only teams or mixed sides to join. As a result two more bodies - the Morris

Federation and Open Morris - were later formed to support both male and female members.

When the Equality Act was introduced in 2010, the Morris Ring was forced to admit women to its ranks, but still refused to accept them as dancers.

Nowadays attitudes have changed, and the organisation’s website currently states: “At our 2018 Annual Representatives Meeting there was overwhelming support for a proposal to enable any Morris team, whatever its gender make up, to become a member of The Morris Ring if they support the principles of the organisation.”

Unfortunately, gender discrimination is not the only controversy to have dogged the world of Morris dancing. The tradition in which some paint their faces black is thought to have originated when dancers tried to disguise themselves whilst ‘begging’ for tips (public begging was illegal at the time). Whatever the roots of this practice, it’s not hard to understand why it might cause offence in the multicultural Britain of today.

Although the debates surrounding Morris traditions rumble on, they have had little impact on the May Day revival that is being enjoyed in the UK. Given the British public’s desire to reconnect with its ancient cultural traditions, it seems that the number of Morris sides in the UK – presently around 13,000 – will continue to grow.

So what are you waiting for? It’s time to tie on those silver bells, put flowers round your hat and get ready to welcome in the summer.

‘A rather novel building has recently been erected at Elland, a windmill, which has been built by Mr. J. Wilson, maltster, on the roof of his maltkiln.

Large numbers of persons have been attracted to the place to examine its construction’.

‘Whilst the local board of health are making so many improvements in the town, there is one little improvement that ought not to be neglected, and that is, to fasten a drinking cup to each of the public wells in the place, so as to accommodate all wishful to drink of the pure beverage. At present they have to dip their faces into the water in order to drink.’

‘Owing to a dispute as to the ownership, a beerhouse in Elland, was deserted by its tenants, and a quantity of ale left in the place. This fact was soon ascertained by some jolly topers, and the result was that the police had to remove two or three thirsty souls, who, seeing the usual notice over the door “to be drunk on the premises” had walked in and applied the notification to themselves.’

‘The local board should consider having the public gas lamps removed during the summer, as they are not lit, and many are broken.’

‘The erection of new shops in Southgate is now being proceeded with. When finished, these shops, with their handsome fronts, will be a great ornament to the town.’

‘The ratepayers of this district are invited to take a walk along Bank Bottom, where they will find good road setts belonging to the town, thrown into the Calder by cartloads.’

‘The police ought to deal with the continual disturbances in Elland, occasioned by two rival greengrocers, who whenever they meet commence using abominable language to each other. The respectable shop keepers in the market place are much annoyed by the conduct of these parties, which tends to keep persons away from the market on Saturdays.’

‘The teachers and scholars of the Wesleyan school, Outlane, walked to North Dean and from thence went by train to Halifax, where they visited the People’s Park. It is stated that many of the younger children had never before seen or travelled upon a railway, and their astonishment was unbounded.’

‘Mr. Thomas Walker of Stainland came upon six mushrooms in close proximity to each other. One measured twelve inches in diameter and was full three inches thick. When placed upon a dining plate the mushroom covered it over on every side. Such a number of large-sized mushrooms has never seen before here.’
