WELCOME TO OUR JUNE EDITION! Summer has arrived and with it a whole host of local outdoor events. This June you can attend a free family day at Elland Lane Children's treat (Pg10), have fun at the Stainland Duck Race (Pg8), find inner peace at the Welland Festival (Pg 35), get Wet and Wacky at It's a Knockout (Pg 22) and help raise money for two very good local causes whilst having a ball at The Secret Garden Summer Ball (Pg 12), plus there are many more events listed in our What's On Guide.

We also feature charity of the month 'Community Foundation for Calderdale' (Pg 18) and the good work they do locally. If you'd like us to feature your local charity or community group in a future issue then just get in touch.

It's been hard to miss news of the demise of the high street recently but in Calderdale we still have some great independent local businesses. This issue we feature much loved local department store 'Harveys of Halifax'.

HALIFAX HEDGEHOGS - SAVING LOCAL HOGS...

Halifax Hedgehogs is a small voluntary organisation run by Jo Crampin who takes in injured and sick hedgehogs locally, nurses them back to health and releases them back to the wild. Jo offers some advice as hedgehogs are waking from hibernation: • When gardening avoid using slug pellets; coffee grounds are a good substitute. Watch out for our prickly friends when strimming and mowing, they probably won’t run away, but just ball up tighter.

• Make sure your dog doesn’t mistake them for a toy, they can seriously injure a hedgehog.

• Hedgehog feeding tip - leave a dish of cat biscuits (avoiding fish), hedgehog biscuits or meaty dog food, along with a dish of fresh water.

Foods to avoid are peanuts, mealworms, bread and sunflower hearts, and please NEVER EVER give them milk.

Halifax Hedgehogs have no official funding, so if you want to help this dwindling population please consider sponsoring a hedgehog. Message Jo on their Facebook page  halifaxhedgehogs or to make a donation to running costs visit: www.paypal.me/halifaxhedgehogs HALIFAX CHARITY GALA  Saturday 8th June sees the 63rd Halifax Gala at Manor Heath Park. This year's procession is expected to be longer than recent years, including some exciting & unusual vehicles. As every year, crowds line the streets of Halifax to watch floats pass by from 11.30am as they head to Manor Heath Park, where it’s expected to arrive around 12.30pm with the official opening ceremony at 1pm.

Around the ground, you'll be treated to kids’ go karts, fairground rides for all ages, and the new ‘Bazaar’ featuring local craft producers.

Admission is £4 (adult), £2 (child/OAP/concession), or £10 family ticket when purchased on the day, under 5s are free. Advance tickets are available from www.halifaxgala.org.uk or from local shops.

YOU’D BE QUACKERS TO MISS THIS! The ever popular Stainland Duck Race is being held at Sonoco again this year on  Saturday 8th June at 2pm.

It is free entry and there’s always a host of raffles, stalls, games, refreshments, face painting, nail painting and so much more!

To find the ducks just walk down the side road of Barkisland Mill towards Sonoco Mill on Black Brook Way, HX4 8ED and listen for the shrieks of delight!

For the uninitiated you can buy your own (plastic) duck in the race and watch them all weave their way downstream to the finish line. Check out  Bowling Green Primary School PTA for information of where tickets can be purchased.

It is always a great afternoon’s fun. All money raised goes to the children of Bowling Green School.

ELLAND LANE CHILDREN’S TREAT A free fun day for all the family! This year’s event will be on  Saturday 22nd June at Huddersfield Amateur Football Club, Old Earth, Elland between 11am and 4pm.

This annual fun day will include: bouncy inflatables, a mega slide, a climbing wall, car racing, bungee run and Punch and Judy. There’ll be a grand raffle, tombola and lots of entertainment to keep the whole family happy; including free drinks for children too.

Last year’s event was very successful with a great turn out and lots of fun. Don’t miss out!!

A CHURCH’S HERITAGE - CROSS HILLS, GREETLAND Cross Hills Methodist Church Greetland are holding a Heritage Weekend on  Sat 6th and Sun 7th July.

A weekend of 'looking back' into the history of the churches of the area and 'looking forward' through community development, toddlers and youth work as we engage in God's work and mission in Greetland. The new church building is now on the site of Greetland Methodist Church, the original building dating back to 1779. The attached graveyard was the oldest in Methodism.

The church recognises its heritage and its influence to many people from the past who worshipped in times of upheaval, illness and conditions which severely affected the health and life of local families.

They are looking for people who have mementos or photographs from the Methodist church in Greetland to loan for the weekend. If you do then please contact mgtmoore@hotmail.co.uk PARKRUN UK TEAMS UP WITH LOCAL GP PRACTICE Bankfield Surgery is planning a Parkrun takeover on  Sat 22nd June at the Brighouse Parkrun. The Parkrun programme has signed up over 400 practices across the UK so far, however, Bankfield Surgery, Elland are leading the way in Calderdale. The partnership is in response that many take a pill for every ailment, so it’s aim is to reduce lifelong medication by improving the health and wellbeing of patients, carers and staff through physical exercise.

It’s a big event to undertake involving around 300 runners. Staff, practice champions and their families will be volunteering their time to help with the running of it. Proudly, they will also have their 2nd cohort of 'Couch to 5k' finishers graduating on this date too. Bankfield yet again being at the forefront in creating opportunities for people to create a healthy lifestyle for themselves.

SEA SCOUT OPPORTUNITIES AHOY! Have you ever wanted your child to learn to kayak, sail, hike or camp? Would you like them to learn new skills or participate in outdoor activities? The Halifax Sea Scouts offer a varied and wide ranging programme and are recruiting across all ages. THE SECRET GARDEN SUMMER BALL The Venue, Bowers Mill are proud to be hosting a Secret Garden Summer Ball on the  Saturday 29th June.

The chosen two charities close to their hearts are; The National Autistic Society, Calderdale Branch (CNAS) and The Laura Crane Youth Cancer Trust.

CNAS offer support to people who live in the surrounding area. They support individuals who are on the autistic spectrum, individuals who are on the waiting list to receive a diagnosis their families and carers.

The Laura Crane Youth Cancer Trust supports young people with cancer. Through raising funds, it enables the charity to fund research into new cancer treatments.

At this black-tie evening there will be a three course meal and live entertainment. Tickets are £50 per person, each ticket sale directly supporting both charities. There will be pop up food & drink (plus more to be announced) at this first, of what is hoped to become a regular, fantastic event for Halifax.

GING GANG GOOLIE… On  Saturday 14th September local charity Happy Days, who support local homeless people, are hosting a Happy Campers Wild Sleepout Challenge at Bradley Wood Scout campsite.

They are looking for groups of scouts, guides and other organisations to join them for this amazing charity event.

There’ll be singing around the campfire with hot dogs for supper and breakfast provided.

The hope is that each child will gain sponsorship for taking part as well as having a little insight as to what it must feel like to be without a home for one night.

Children will need to bring their own sleeping bag and pillow with suitable clothing and footwear for sleeping under the stars. So, no tents needed but rest assured there will be waterproof sheeting as protection should the weather turn. For more information please contact angela@happydaysuk.org

Following the recent elections, Stainland and District Parish Council now has nine newly elected Parish Councillors who will serve the wards of Sowood, Holywell Green and Stainland for the next four years. This marks an important step in the journey of the new Parish Council which was established in 2017.

The temporary councillors, many of whom worked towards the creation of the new council, have now completed their task of preparing all the necessary infrastructure, adopting policies, employing the clerk and setting up the office in Stainland Library as a point of contact for residents.

During the 12 month period prior to the elections Judith Crossley took on the role of Chair and together with the new Clerk, Jill Goldthorpe, led the Parish Council through its first year. This was no small undertaking but with help from Anne Haynes, the Clerk at Ripponden Parish Council, and the Yorkshire Local Councils Association the temporary councillors achieved their goal of paving the way for elected councillors to get off to a flying start.

In the Chair’s departing message Judith welcomes the new councillors and hopes that they will endeavour to keep Stainland and District and its residents at the forefront of their thoughts and decisions. Judith also said that the temporary councillors had done an outstanding job in listening to residents, addressing issues and keeping them informed.

CHARITY OF THE MONTH

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION FOR CALDERDALE Sarah lives with her partner and a toddler. She suffered abuse as a child and young adult, lost a previous baby as a result, and has long-term mental health problems.

Her welfare benefits were restricted, and further claims refused. Her caseworker helped her appeal, successfully. This led to a significant increase in family income - over £3,100 backdated, and at least £170 per week extra going forward.

Local charities make up the lifeblood of our communities. They make a daily difference to millions of people. That’s why Community Foundation for Calderdale are proud to serve our local community.

We support charities and voluntary groups across Calderdale, addressing inequalities and working to help create opportunities for those that need help the most. We invest in these groups by distributing grants and loans and sharing expertise - acting as a catalyst for positive change. We rely on the generosity of individuals, businesses and public sector organisations to help local people gain the support they need now, while investing in a brighter future for all.

From floods to fuel poverty to food banks, we support communities where they need it the most. We reach every postcode in Calderdale and this reach means that we support the very smallest charities and community groups, who often go unnoticed by many. But it’s these charities that are a lifeline for so many people and desperately need our support.

Take for example, our Calderdale homelessness support project, which gives those who have not go a place to call home the chance to start again.

Over the past two years our support has helped 78 people to be rehoused and access support to maintain their tenancy.

Support your local Community Foundation and help us reach more people and continue to support local communities. For a limited time, The Community Foundation for Calderdale will match fund donations of £50 per month via their Foundation Club.

The Club brings together local businesses and families who are passionate about Calderdale and helps them change lives. We’ll make it easy and rewarding to give locally and help you share your skills and expertise to strengthen local charities.

When you join the Foundation Club you will be joining a family of local businesses, who like us want to make a difference in our community.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH STRAWBERRY AND CREAM ECLAIRS Filled with sweetened whipped cream and fresh strawberries, these dainty pastries make a great treat for afternoon tea or can be served as a delicious summer dessert. Swap the strawberries for fresh raspberries or blueberries, if liked.

INGREDIENTS 50g butter, chilled and diced 65g plain flour, sifted 2 medium eggs, lightly beaten 300ml double cream 1 tbsp icing sugar, plus extra for dusting 150g small strawberries DIRECTIONS 1 Place the butter and 150ml cold water in a small pan and heat gently until the butter melts. Bring the mixture to a rapid boil then quickly remove from the heat and add all the flour. Beat thoroughly with a wooden spoon until the mixture comes away from the sides of the pan and forms a ball. Leave to cool for 3-4 minutes.

2 Preheat the oven to 220C (fan 200). Line a large baking sheet with baking paper. Beat the eggs into the mixture, a little at a time, until smooth and glossy. Spoon the mixture into a large piping bag fitted with a large star nozzle. Pipe 8 x 10cm lengths, spaced well apart, onto the baking sheet.

3 Bake for 12-15 mins until the eclairs are well risen and golden. Remove from the oven, pierce each eclair with the tip of a small knife and return to the oven for 2-3 minutes. This allows the steam to escape and dries out the centres of each eclair.

Transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool completely.

4 Whip the cream and icing sugar in a bowl until softly peaking. Spoon into a large piping bag fitted with a large star nozzle. Hull and slice most of the strawberries (reserve four for decoration).

5 Halve each eclair and fill with the cream then top with sliced strawberries. Sandwich back together and dust with icing sugar. Decorate each one with a swirl of piped cream and a reserved strawberry.

TIP You can make and bake the choux pastry eclairs a day in advance. If the pastry goes a little soft simply reheat in a hot oven for a few minutes until crisp.

A FESTIVAL OF WELLBEING FOR ELLAND - WELLAND! ‘Welland: A Festival of Joy’ is Calderdale’s first festival of wellbeing, created for the community of Elland.

great potential here and the future is bright!”.

The project aims to help local people live well for longer by providing creative, inspirational, and inclusive activities bringing the community together.

At the moment, Sam runs the festival herself, with support from Chol Theatre and a small group of volunteers, but she is hopeful that Welland will grow and will be Organiser Sam McCormick able to offer jobs and work opportunities for local people too.

After last year’s hugely successful pilot project, this June sees a whole weekend of wellness on offer in Elland for free. This year’s theme is ‘Move Well, Live Well’ and so there will be a whole range of different activities that help people of all ages and abilities get moving and experience ways to live happier, more connected lives.

Welland also has a uniquely global flavour this year as it is programmed to coincide with Global Wellness Day, which will be celebrated around the world on  Saturday 8th June.

A series of smaller activities have also been taking place in Elland in the run up, including schools’ workshops, community meetings, a business networking event and the festival launch party.

Welland is hosted by Curel CIC, a non profit organisation based in Elland that is dedicated to community wellbeing and was co-founded by local resident Samantha McCormick. Sam has a wealth of experience working with people of all ages and backgrounds, helping to enhance quality of life and promote inclusion through dance and movement.

The idea for Welland grew from conversations Sam had with local residents and businesses.

Many people felt that Elland had lost its vibrancy and that new opportunities and ideas were desperately needed. With this in mind Sam met with Chol Theatre, a Huddersfield based charity who have a wealth of experience in community projects and events. In that first meeting the idea of a festival was discussed, the name was born, and the rest is history!

Alongside Welland, Sam also runs a number of other projects in the area, including ‘Brews & Grooves’ - a fun and informal dance class for people over 55 and Curel’s unique ‘Team Well’ workplace programme that helps organisations embed wellness into their culture. Personally, I quite like my freckles. However, I’m not that keen on other areas of uneven pigmentation. URINE PROBLEMS IN CATS AND DOGS Dogs and cats are prone to many of the same things that humans are when it comes to urinary issues. These can range from mild infections (cystitis) through to bladder or kidneys stones or even tumours. Recognising the symptoms is important, as animals can’t tell us there is an issue, and the signs can be subtle.

Excess urination is one - this could actually be caused by a variety of non-urinary issues but can be a sign of cystitis as well. You will usually see increased drinking at the same time and like the increased urination, can be a sign of other disease processes.

Incontinence is sign to look out for, especially in bitches after they have been neutered, or older animals. It is really important to differentiate between urinating in inappropriate places and genuine incontinence. With incontinence urine will often be found in their beds or drip out as they are walking without them noticing or straining. Before diagnosing incontinence, we always make sure other potential causes have been ruled out first. The medication to treat incontinence is usually very effective and is not overly expensive so it is worth trying if your pet is experiencing these issues.

Discoloured urine can be due to different urine concentrations, but any reddish or pink tinge is

cause to investigate. Very brown urine should be followed up in a similar way.

Straining to urinate, passing small amounts little and often and interrupted streams are all other signs to be aware of. Crying when trying to urinate without any urine production is an emergency and you should contact your vet immediately. This is especially common in male cats and one of the more frequent veterinary emergencies we deal with.

Getting a urine sample is easier in dogs. A takeaway dish or similar can be used to get a “free catch” sample that can be analysed at the vets. However, some dogs are trickier than others when trying this! For cats the best method is to replace the cat litter with non-absorbable plastic litter. The urine can then be taken from the tray.

Sometimes your vet will advise sedation and “cystocentesis” to get a sample. The procedure involves passing a needle through the abdominal wall into the bladder and drawing out a sample in a syringe. This is especially used when we are trying to get a sterile sample.

Urine system problems can make a big difference to your pet’s lives and so if you see any of the above contact your vet, your friend will thank you for it!

Maisie came into us as a stray, so we don`t know about her. However, whilst she has been in her foster home she has settled well, she’s clean and loves attention.

Her adopters would need to be patient and give her time to settle, we have no doubt that she will become a gentle lap cat.

Maisie isn`t keen on being picked up, so we think she would be better suited to an adult only home or a family with sensible children.

As Maisie is over 10 years’ old, she also qualifies to be adopted under the EARS scheme.

WEST VALE WORKS

West Vale Works is a new friendly and welcoming group created to help local business people come together to network, learn and share what works with each other.

With grant funding courtesy of Calderdale Council’s Flood Recovery Fund, local business owners Paul Greenwood and Lisa Roberts (Hive of Many) and Lou Berry (Chatterbox Social) saw an opportunity to bring the business community together from the hills, valleys and villages surrounding West Vale.

The group are hosting bi-monthly business networking events in the centre of West Vale.

Events offer practical advice with guest speakers bringing a raft of knowledge and experience that

attendees can take away and apply into your business.

West Vale Works launch event took place at Vine in West Vale on Thursday 2nd May with 35 people attending from businesses of all shapes and sizes.

Speaker Rachel Gough of Inspired Marketing gave an entertaining and insightful talk about ‘How to Network Properly’, giving business owners tips and guidance how to get the most out of networking. Attendees were also given a practical challenge to create and practice their own 60 Second Pitch with help from their peers.

HOUSEPLANT HEAVEN Houseplants will have supplied you with some lovely greenery during the gloomier months, but right now it’s time to give them a bit of TLC as they could do with some pampering.

Quite often houseplants get very lacklustre and miserable over the winter and spring, so start by checking them over thoroughly. Remove and dispose of any that are heavily infested with pests or infected by diseases. Although it is sometimes possible to control these sorts of problems, unless the plant is of extreme sentimental value, it is rarely worth all the effort. Once done, continue as follows…

1. Pick over remaining plants removing dead, damaged or discoloured leaves. Use sharp scissors, special ‘snips’ or miniature secateurs on tough leaf stems.

2. Houseplants usually respond well if repotted in late spring or very early summer, so if yours are pot-bound do this now. Check by carefully removing the plant from its pot - if the root system is quite congested, it’s usually time for it to move house.

3. When repotting, only move the plants up one pot size and use compost as similar as possible to their current compost. If in doubt, seek advice from your compost supplier. Ensure the compost is free-draining and that there are crocks at the base of the pot. Consider adding additional grit or perlite to improve drainage.

4. Once repotted, place plants in a cool, relatively stress-free environment for a week or two, away from hot or direct bright sunlight. Keep them adequately watered and the roots will move into the new compost.

5. Once they are happy in their new pot, give them a bit of a bath. Using well-moistened kitchen roll or cotton wool, wipe the leaves clean.

Many of the more glossy-leaved houseplants respond well to an application of leaf shine, but not all, so check before you start.

6. Feed houseplants regularly - good fertilisers are available in garden centres. Choose those formulated specifically for the plants where 60

possible, or those suitable for foliage or flowering houseplants. Specialist fertilisers are also available for cactii and African violets.

7. Plants that have just been potted on will not require feeding for a couple of months, but both recently replanted and more established houseplants need regular watering, particularly as they start to grow and if they are in a fairly warm or sunny position.

8. Don’t place plants in too sunny a spot - they can get too hot or suffer from leaf scorching if placed too close to a south- or west-facing window. Use an east- or north-facing windowsill where possible, or at least move them further back from the glass. Most houseplants benefit from being placed in dappled shade in the garden, and they should thrive provided you keep them fed and watered.

Finally, why not treat yourself to a new houseplant or two? A visit to your local garden centre is bound to provide you with plenty of inspiration, but do make sure that the plant is well-suited to the position that you have lined up for it.

It’s tempting to buy those that only do well in really sunny situations, but if you only have a fairly shady windowsill to offer it, then it will suffer immensely over the winter months so try not to be tempted by things that aren’t really suitable.

QUIRKY BRITAIN - TALES FROM BRITAIN'S FOOD WAR ZONES Many Brits - perhaps hoping for a repeat of last summer’s heatwave or just worried about the implications of Bexit - have decided against travelling abroad this year.

Of course, it’s great news for our home-grown tourist industry, and if you’re planning to take your annual holiday in Britain, you might be looking forward to the opportunity to sample local brews, cheeses, cakes and puddings.

Locally sourced foods are very much in vogue at the moment, but before you tuck in to all that delicious produce you should be aware of the strong emotions a well-loved local dish can inspire. Say the wrong thing about a regional speciality in some parts of the UK and you could end up starting a riot.

Cream tea and pasty wars One of the main causes of strife between the people of Devon and Cornwall is the innocent cream tea. Ask a native Devonian to eat a cream tea and she or he will split the scone, pile clotted cream onto each half then add a dollop of jam on top. Serve someone from Cornwall the same teatime treat and they will spoon jam onto each half scone, then spread the cream on top.

Last year a National Trust poster designed to attract visitors to Lanhydrock House in Cornwall caused outrage when it used a photo of a cream tea with the jam on top of the cream. In response, locals threatened to boycott the National Trust property, while one indignant Facebook member commented: “There are some things you don’t do National Trust, and putting a picture of a DEVON cream tea for a CORNISH cream tea event is disgusting.”

Even the humble Cornish pasty has caused its fair share of discord, as historians have suggested that the snack was actually invented in Devon.

Their claim rests on a document dating to the early 16th century, which lists a cook’s wages for baking pasties served at a civic event in Plymouth.

Shape-shifting sausages Ask any traditionally-minded Scot what shape a sausage should be, and the answer is likely to be “square”. The ‘Lorne sausage’, ‘slice’ or ‘square

sausage’ is a tasty mixture of minced meat, rusk and spices, served at a Scottish breakfast.

However, the ongoing culinary debate in Scotland is not, as you might think, about a sausage’s shape, it’s about what it should be called. In 2016 a Scot called Andy O’Donnell went so far as to create a Facebook page dedicated to the name ‘slice’ (to describe the square sausage). The page now boasts 188 members who regularly post photos and tongue-in-cheek comments.

Whose tart is it anyway?

Visit any self-respecting bakery or tearoom in the pretty town of Bakewell in Derbyshire and you’re certain to be offered the sweet treat that is Bakewell Tart. This confection of jam, frangipane and flaked almonds inside a shortcrust pastry shell is a variant of the town’s famous dessert, the Bakewell Pudding.

Bakewell’s residents may be proud of their local speciality, but there is no evidence to suggest that the recipe actually originated in the town. To make matters worse, a rival tart was discovered in 2013, when Gloucestershire’s council leader Paul James came across an old recipe for ‘Gloucester Tart’ - with almost identical ingredients – in a local history book. The discovery prompted Gloucester’s local media to gleefully exclaim: "Gloucester Tart revived, better than Bakewell!"

So before you set off on your summer break, you’d be well advised to brush up on your diplomatic skills: but get ready to run if you mix up your tarts, call a ‘slice’ a ‘Lorne sausage’ or heaven forbid - spread your scone the wrong way.

LOCAL HISTORY NOTES by

TALES FROM 1869 Thankfully earthquakes are rare within the British Isles but these reports note the shock caused by the quake as it struck across the Pennines:‘In the valley near Elland the strange vibrations of the earth were noticed by many persons, who also appear to have heard the rumbling noise.

The bookkeeper at Smithies’ Mill describes the shock as a contraction of the earth and he felt as though a current of electricity had passed through his body. It was generally thought in the mill that the boiler had exploded. In Westgate the inhabitants ran into the street, and the doors swung to and fro. A woman living in one of the streets off Westgate was sitting by the fire when the shock occurred, causing the windows to rattle, and immediately afterwards she felt sick and vomited. She stated that she felt the electric current. At the residence of Dr Hamerton the family went into the kitchen to ascertain the origin of the strange movements of articles in the house.

Near the bridge a man was standing leaning his head against a wall, waiting of his companion, when the shock occurred, and the wall was lifted from its foundation.’

Mother knows best!

‘A laughable scene occurred in the streets of Halifax as a young couple, from Elland, had whispered ‘sweet nothings’ to one another, quite contrary to the wishes of the young girl’s mother.

Feeling sure that her consent would not be obtained to a ‘marriage settlement’, the youthful pair eloped to Halifax, but were not able to have the Hymeneal knot tied immediately upon their arrival, and went into the streets for a walk. Whilst counting the minutes, which seemed like days ere they should be man and wife, the suspicious mother (who had been to Hymeneal altar before the daughter) suddenly pounced upon the luckless pair, and giving vent to her pent-up wrath, she first belaboured the ‘village swain’ till he was glad to ‘leave his intended mother and cleave to strangers’ for refuge. Turning to her truant daughter, she remarked, ‘tha’a young powse, aw’l leearn theeto goa an’ get wed’ and then ‘claated’ her down Horton Street to the railway station to the manifest delight of scores of unsympathising people.’

A ‘Last of the Summer Wine’ prank?

‘A number of men were out drinking, one of whom was an Ellander. In returning to Elland the jovial party called at a wayside house to get ‘just another pint’ before going home. The Elland man was overcome, and going outside the house, fell into a deep sleep, and became oblivious to all mundane things.

A hearse passed that way, when a party of delvers from Southowram bargained to have the poor fellow conveyed as ‘back carriage’ and in the hearse he was placed. On arriving at home the proprietor was alarmed to find the hearse inhabited, and the man, waking up, was equally lost - his last recollection was that of drinking with his mates.

How he got into the hearse he does not know, and will be glad if anyone will tell him.’
