WELCOME September can be as much a time for new starts and changes as a new year.

Children moving up a year at school or on to college; or even adults considering a new hobby or fitness plan after a few too many ice-creams over the summer!

This month we’ve plenty of ideas inside the mag for ways to improve your body and mind; there are local clubs and activities for all ages too. We’ve also made some changes ourselves in this latest issue with an updated look and layout. We hope you like it!

Before we get into Autumn though we get to enjoy one of the year’s busiest weekends locally with the Norland Scarecrow and Rushbearing festivals from the 1st September. You can find features on both inside this month’s issue.

We’ve also had chance to catch up with the CEO of the Piece Hall Trust Nicky Chance-Thompson and found out a bit more about Nicky herself and the future plans for the Piece Hall. Enjoy the magazine and have a great month!

‘N’ IS FOR ‘NORLAND’ SCARECROWS

The time for Norland’s annual Scarecrow Festival is here again and this year the committee has decided to shake things up a bit. The chosen theme is scarecrows beginning with the letter ‘N’.

The scarecrow makers` creative juices have been flowing, from sports stars and topical characters to celebrities and the quirky as well as the wellloved characters from previous years, such as Nemo and Noddy - oops, I hope I haven’t given anything away there! Visitors to this traditional family event will be scratching their heads to put names to the ingeniously witty and beautifully made scarecrows.

The Festival, run by Norland residents for the last 18 years, raises money in support of local charities. The scarecrows will be in every nook and cranny of the village during the first full weekend in September; a perfect end to the school holidays. All four days will be action-filled from when the Scarecrow tent (the hub) opens on the council field at 9am through to 7pm.

Friendly Band will be playing Saturday afternoon at 2pm in the Memorial Park, or in St Luke’s Church if the weather is dubious. Hebden Bridge Junior Band play Sunday afternoon at 2pm also in the Memorial Park, or St Luke’s. There are also children’s fun rides and face painting on the playing fields and a barrel organ in the school playground on Saturday and Sunday.

Cream teas and light refreshments will be available at Middle Harper Royd and St Luke’s, and the legendary BBQ at Norland WMC shouldn’t be missed.

This year the committee has teamed up with the fabulous Calderdale Rocks, along with help from pupils at Norland School who have already done a rock drop. There is a twist; there are five special golden rocks to find. If you are lucky enough to find one bring it along to the scarecrow marquee and you can trade it in for a scarecrow themed prize!

Arguably, the historic moorland village boasts some of the best scenery in Calderdale, so the scarecrows are best viewed on foot or on a bike.

The roads around Norland are very narrow and steep and quickly become congested, so please take advantage of the official car park on Shaw Lane fields (HX6 3RL). As it’s Yorkshire it doesn’t cost that much either, all you need is a £1 for a trail sheet, a bit of ‘summat’ for one of them tasty cream teas and a brew, and the best bit…the car parking is FREE. There you go ‘summat for nowt’!

RUSHBEARING FUN 2018!

SAT & SUN 1-2 SEPTEMBER

The Sowerby Bridge Rushbearing Festival is one of only a few instances of this particular English tradition still being celebrated annually and this will be the 42nd annual event since the tradition was revived in the 1970s.

Rushbearing dates back several centuries to the time when church floors consisted of little more than stone flags or beaten earth and rushes were used as a winter covering. Each year, in late summer, the old and rotten rushes were cleared out and new ones taken to the churches in carts.

Human nature being what it is, this annual custom developed into an excuse for celebration with revelry, music, dancing and much drinking of strong ales. In this respect not much has changed!

Over the course of the weekend, the Rushbearing procession travels around 7 towns and villages in the Ryburn Valley visiting many churches and local hostelries along the way. The focal point of the procession is the sixteen feet high, twowheeled, handsomely decorated and thatched rushcart. A team of young women take turns to ride on top of the cart as it is pulled by sixty local men dressed in Panama hats, white shirts, black trousers and clogs. Accompanying them are a group of supporters in Edwardian dress along with some of the region’s finest musicians and Morris dancing teams to provide entertainment for the crowds.

Ultimately, the need for the rushes as a floor covering has disappeared, but the festival has survived in a few areas including our own.

The centrepiece of the Rushbearing Festival is undoubtedly the rushcart. The rushes that make up the bulk of the cart are not the same ones each year. After each festival the cart is cleaned and the frame stripped of rushes and put into storage. In mid-August, in the run-up to the event, 20 to 30 people begin the process of preparing the rushcart for the approaching event.

A team of volunteers work for several evenings to produce the 20 to 25 bags of rushes required.

The rushes are then transported to the Canal Basin in Sowerby Bridge where the thatching work begins. Over 550 bundles of rushes, of varying sizes are made with enthusiastic help

of the 12th Halifax Sea Scouts. Each bundle is then bound to the wooden frame with traditional hemp sisal.

CREATE A POPPY FOR ARMISTICE COMMEMORATION To commemorate 100 years since the First World War armistice, Halifax Town Hall would like to display as many crafted poppies as possible during Remembrance Week. Our local council are calling on schools, clubs, craft groups, societies, in fact everyone, to help make and contribute poppies.

They can be made from paper, wool, metal, plastic, wood, fabric, glass, clay, anything; providing they can fit on a window sill. Bunting would also be welcome addition to the display. It decides where development will take place in Calderdale. 12,600 dwellings are planned between 20182033. This is your last opportunity to make your final comments on the Local Plan before it’s sent to the Secretary of State and the Inspector who undertakes the Public Examination.

It’s important that people comment again on this final version.

The latest housing site assessments don’t include many comments previously made. It’s essential that the inspector sees residents’ final comments when making decisions on the Local Plan.

The Local Plan looks at the reduction of the wildlife corridors and special landscape areas, development on green belt land, impact on conservation areas and highway concerns. The challenges faced in accessing services, transport and shops are real barriers, which only exacerbates their isolation; 30% of people living with dementia leave their house only once a week.

A new group, ‘Dementia Friendly Sowerby Bridge’ aims to make the local area a ‘dementia-friendly’ community through awareness and helping those affected feel more supported in everyday life. The group would like to involve local businesses, services and residents in raising awareness of this cruel disorder, improve understanding and support and develop improvements to the dementia landscape of our area.

Saturday 15th September sees the launch of Dementia Friendly Sowerby Bridge. An evening of rock & roll with the group ‘GT and The Speedways’ will be held at Sowerby Bridge Working Men’s Club. As well as music and supper, plans for the future will be discussed. Everyone is welcome at this free event; donations will be gratefully received. BUSY TIMES AT SOWERBY BRIDGE STATION - UPDATE FROM THE FRIENDS GROUP ‘We have been busily preparing for the Yorkshire in Bloom judges who visited us on the 12th July.

We’ve had a camera crew down to see what we get up to for a Northern Railway event and watering of the planters was kept up with, thanks to a little help from our fire brigade friends.

In other news, Network Rail will be carrying out work at the station to extend both the Manchester and Leeds bound platforms. Work has already begun and goes on until early November. During this time five parking bays at the station will be taken up by the compound, so please make sure you plan your journeys to and around the station.

As for the Sowerby Bridge Railway friends’ group, we’re looking forward to our War Memorial project coming to fruition in November and will continue to improve the gateway to the town.’

MILL BANK - THE STORY OF A WEST YORKSHIRE VILLAGE Hazel Whiteley and Ruth Beazley have published a book about the history of Mill Bank, bringing together Hazel’s research and personal history along with Ruth’s collation of local stories from friends and neighbours.

The book also includes Hazel’s history of the village from pre-historic times, through the vibrant 19th century to the brink of demolition in the 1960s. Ruth then recounts the local action, which saved the village and led to the recognition of it as a Conservation Area in 1976.

AN INTERVIEW WITH NICKY CHANCE-THOMPSON Nicky Chance Thompson became CEO of The Piece Hall Trust in April 2017 and now, just one year after the phoenix of the former woollen market has well and truly risen from the ashes, Go Local managed to catch up with her…

What motivates you to get up in the morning?

I love my job and my life. Having been quite seriously ill around 13 years ago, I feel I now have a second chance and relish making the most of it.

Do you have a favourite quote?

Do not be anxious over anything, there is usually a solution.

What was your first job?

I started out working in a London advertising agency, Lowe Howard Spink working with many large corporations including Tesco, which was having a major re-invention of their brand at the time. I was lucky to work with and learn from some great minds.

What was your route from that first job to ending up as CEO for the Piece Hall?

From brand strategy I then moved into media, working in magazines and the early days of online and digital radio and then onto consultancy for various government policies. A big part of what I learned was about change - the psychology of change and helping people to see why the change is necessary and will benefit them. I then worked on some major regeneration projects including Covent Garden and HS2.

The mix of retail and regeneration experience led me to my current position, as well as being married to a Haligonian! My husband Marcus showed me round the Piece Hall 12 years ago when we moved up to Yorkshire; I was struck by the amazing architecture and potential of the building straight away. It really inspired and moved me.

It’s great to see you included on the Northern Power Women list for 2018. What’s your advice for other women striving to achieve their career dreams?

Be brave, be yourself and don’t settle. We are not like men and that’s fine. We have different ways of working and thinking and those differences are to be celebrated. The UK ranks sixteenth in the world for gender equality, so we still have a way

What do you do to keep yourself centred?

Try and help other people. Breathe deeply. Take time to smell the roses, visit the seaside and spend time with my family, friends and husband (councillor and current Mayor of Calderdale - Marcus Thompson) and my dogs.

If I asked your friends to give me 3 adjectives that best describe you, what would they say?

Fearless, driven and kind.

What’s next for the Piece Hall?

More of the same! We have just opened a Piece Hall Trust-run restaurant and on the 15th September we’re holding the ‘Blondin Gala’ - a recreation of Blondin’s original tight rope walk across the Piece Hall in 1861. We’ll also have a full Christmas programme of events later in the year, including an Abba tribute band.

What is your vision for Halifax?

The vision of The Piece Hall Trust is to make this unique historic building a world class destination and we are well on our way to doing that with over 2.4m visitors to date and very recently we were put on Historic England’s Top Ten UK Heritage Destinations list. We want to help create the conditions for success for Calderdale, making it a happier, healthier and wealthier place with opportunities for all.

Ripponden Parish Neighbourhood Plan Have your say Following consultations with the local community throughout the last year a draft Neighbourhood Plan for the Parish of Ripponden is now available for local people to comment upon for a six week period commencing Monday13th August 2018.

This is a framework for the future and contains planning policies and general proposals for improving the area and for providing new facilities, including the allocation of key sites for specific kinds of development. It addresses a wide range of issues such as housing, heritage, transport, economic development and the countryside and is based on what local people have told the Parish Council they would like to see happen in the area over the next fifteen years.

Paper copies and comment forms are available in key locations, such as post offices, the library, health centre, Ripponden Parish Council’s Office and local churches. The draft Neighbourhood Plan is also available to view and comment upon online at www.rippondenneighbourhoodplan.co.uk.

The deadline for comments is Monday 24th September 2018.

If adopted and endorsed by a local Referendum, this document will become the Plan for our area and all our communities and will give Ripponden Parish Council additional planning powers.

YODA SUPPORT GROUP Young Onset Dementia & Alzheimer’s (YODA) YODA is Calderdale’s only support group for those living with Young Onset dementia (under 65 years).

VINTAGE FAIR AT SQUARE CHAPEL

Square Chapel Arts Centre’s award winning building elevates re-purposing to an art form, making it a perfect venue for a vintage fair.

Built in 1772, by benefactors from Calderdale’s textile industry, Square Chapel Arts Centre - so named due to its location on Halifax’s Square Road - started out life as a non-denominational community chapel. Fast forward nearly 250 years and it has been transformed into one of the north’s leading arts venues, hosting acts like Beth Orton and Clint Boon, plus its most recent makeover completed in 2017, netted it a prize in this year’s RIBA Yorkshire titles!

Once an important community chapel and later a Sunday school, by the 1980s it had become a derelict shell of a building. Then in 1988, a small group of people broke in to take a look around. Perceiving its potential, they successfully managed to buy it from the council for just £25, on the understanding it became a venue for community events. Their first chamber concert was held in the chapel in 1989. Photos of this first event show the string quartet wearing hard hats and the audience sat under blankets with the wind whistling in through the broken windows and roof!

The now fully restored, extended and very accessible Square Chapel Arts Centre, which was designed by architects, Evans Vittori, honours the co-existence of old and new. The Red Brick Auditorium, which is the former chapel, still has its eighteenth century beams, plaster and stucco visible on the inside and brick work and mouldings preserved on the outside but juxtaposed against this is a stunning 26

new ‘on the level’ café bar entrance area. This not only offers a full perspective of the original chapel, but is incredibly light, thanks to floor to ceiling windows.

It is this spirit of re-cycling and re-purposing which makes the forthcoming vintage fair, hosted at Square Chapel on September 8, incredibly on point. The current resurgence of vintage being driven by that same passion for preserving and appreciating the past but in a fresh, innovative and artistic way.

On 8 September, singing throughout the day from the platform in the café bar, will be the Fabulous Miss G, well known throughout the vintage world for her pitch perfect soulful renditions of timeless classics from Dusty Springfield and Etta James. There will also be bookable swing dance lessons from award winning dance duo The Swing Cats in the Copper Auditorium in the morning (with a mini swing dance in nearby Woolshops Shopping Centre in the afternoon), plus a film screening of Marilyn Monroe classic Some Like it Hot in the afternoon.

With nearly 20 premier vintage sellers selling a wide range of ladies and gents fashions, accessories, furniture and household goods in the Red Brick Auditorium, the event is guaranteed to look stunning in the reinvented setting.

10 PRINCIPLES OF CRIME PREVENTION

These principles will reduce the chance of crime at your home, your place of work or business.

You don’t have to use all ten principles at once; you may find using just one could help you or it may be a combination of several of them. Contact our Crime Prevention Officers and they will work with you to take the best approach possible for your circumstances.

THE 10 PRINCIPLES OF CRIME PREVENTION ARE: 1. Target Hardening Make your property harder for an offender to access. Upgrade locks on your doors, windows, sheds and outbuildings. Fit sash jammers to vulnerable doors and windows and use secure passwords with your online accounts.

2. Target Removal Ensure that a potential target is out of sight.

Don’t leave valuable items on view through your windows and put your vehicle in the garage if you have one. Be cautious about what you post online as it may be used to identify or locate you offline.

3. Reducing the Means Remove items that may help commit an offence.

Don’t leave tools and ladders in the garden. Keep wheelie bins out of reach and clear up bricks and rubble.

4. Reducing the Payoff Reduce the profit the criminal can make from the offence. Security mark your property in a way that others will not want to buy from the thief.

5. Access Control Lock your doors and windows to both your house and vehicle. Ensure that fencing, hedges, walls and other boundary treatments are in a good state of repair.

6. Surveillance Improve surveillance to deter criminals. Remove high hedges/fences that allow an offender to work unseen. Consider adding CCTV or establish a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme.

7. Environmental Change Ensure your property looks cared for. Clear up graffiti and waste. Report issues with fly-tipping or broken street lights.

8. Rule Setting Change habits by setting rules and positioning signage in appropriate locations. Introduce a rule that the last person entering/leaving should lock the door and remove the keys. For work places, inform users that a particular site is closed between certain times and should not be accessed.

9. Increase the Chances of Being Caught Increase the likelihood that an offender will be caught. Make sure dusk to dawn security lighting is in place and working.

10. Deflecting Offenders Deter an offender or deflect their intention. Use timer switches to make your home look occupied if vacant.

The Great Get Together on a blisteringly hot July day, was a great occasion and brought a lot of people together. Well done Memory Lane, Bluebird Café, Crow Wood Park and Sowerby Bridge Rotary for organising it. Fire and Water had the town model there generating interest and we signed up a good number of new members.

CHARITY APPLICATION Becoming a charity is essential to applications for funding of grants, so the fact that we have been trying to register for 21 months is incredibly frustrating. However, this saga seems to be coming to an end and with advice from our charity lawyer, re-submission is about to happen.

We hope that these relationships will continue to develop - watch out for us and be prepared to be entertained!

Senior officers are now involved for a speedy conclusion. Who knows, by the time you are reading this, permission might have come through.

MEMBERSHIP & COMMUNITY LINKS We need to increase our membership and links with community groups across the area. Whilst we cannot provide much accommodation for groups at present, what we have is available and we’d love to have you using the premises. It would be great to support you and have you to support us.

So far, we have used it for concerts, exhibitions, shows and workshops, but we’d like to see others using it. Let us know what you want and let’s see how we can fit you in.

HAM, ROASTED PEPPER & FETA FLAN

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

Using a ready-rolled sheet of puff pastry makes this summer flan a doddle to make. Serve warm or cold with a peppery watercress and rocket salad and some boiled new potatoes for a lovely late summer lunch or supper.

INGREDIENTS 1 large red pepper, deseeded and thickly sliced 1 large yellow pepper, deseeded and thickly sliced 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed 2 tbsp olive oil 320g packet ready-rolled puff pastry sheet 2 large tomatoes, thinly sliced 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves, plus extra to garnish 75g feta cheese, crumbled 6 slices Parma ham Freshly ground black pepper Beaten egg, to glaze DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 220°C/200°C fan/gas 7.

Place the peppers and garlic in a shallow roasting tin and drizzle over half the olive oil. Roast in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes until just tender.

2. Unroll the pastry sheet onto a large baking sheet lined with baking paper. Arrange the tomatoes over the pastry, leaving a 2cm border, and scatter over the thyme leaves. Top with the crumbled feta and ruffles of Parma ham. Season with freshly ground black pepper. Drizzle over the rest of the olive oil.

3. Gently fold in the pastry edges a little to give a raised border. Brush the pastry border with beaten egg.

TIPS • You can use any other variety of continental ham for this flan, or try thin slices of salami or pastrami instead.

• Remove the packet of pastry from the fridge about 20 minutes before unrolling to allow it to soften a little.

4. Bake the flan for 15-20 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden and the peppers are lightly charred in places. Serve warm or cold garnished with the extra thyme leaves.

Last October we were invited to attend St John’s School, Rishworth to deliver an Oral Health talk to the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 children. We had a great time, the children and teachers were fantastic and the session was a huge success.

All of the children who participated showed a keen interest in learning how to keep their mouths and teeth healthy. It was lovely to see that most of the children attended the dentist for routine examinations on a regular basis too!

Following the success of our trip to St John’s we were then lucky enough to be invited along to Norland School to take part in their Supporting Health Day! We had a great day and would just like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful children and teachers of Norland

School for making us feel so welcome! During our visit we provided two interactive sessions with different age groups where we discussed oral health, brushing and oral hygiene techniques, some fun facts about teeth and examples of food and drink that is good and bad for your teeth, some of which came as a surprise to the children and teachers! The willingness of all children and staff to join in made our visit so much fun and we hope that everyone enjoyed and made use of all of the goodies we shared.

In total, we spoke to around 100 children between both schools and it was great to think that we may have helped these children learn some more and hopefully develop and maintain some great healthy habits to care for their teeth for a lifetime!

AEROBIC EXERCISE AND WEIGHT LOSS

WHICH IS BEST?

When people think of weight training they think of big bulging muscles, which are attributes few, particularly women, strive towards.

This is a myth; weight training is the quickest way to tone, define and improve your shape. Most women, however, prefer to train aerobically; such as cycling, walking, swimming and so on, in search of the perfect body.

Well, I thought I would help you to decide which type of aerobic exercise is the most effective when trying to burn fat.

Firstly, whatever exercise or sport you choose as your weapon against the bulge, select one that you enjoy and to think of it as a long-term plan; one which you will continue to do long into old age.

Aerobic exercise is an ideal choice. It burns calories off whilst the exercise is being done, it can be done on your own or with friends and is cheap to do. The immediate after effects of aerobic exercise are a real sense of well-being, with weight loss, improved circulation, stronger heart and more effective lungs having longer term outcomes.

HERE ARE THREE OF THE MOST COMMON TYPES OF AEROBIC EXERCISE:

the pool feeling tired. This way you will effectively change your body shape through swimming.

Walking Walking is cheap and can be done anywhere, with friends and does not need any specialist equipment (although a good pair of stout walking boots are recommended if you intend walking off-road). Why not get a walking group of friends together and arrange to meet at different places each week? It makes it a fun and social activity as well as getting in the exercise.

Cycling Cycling can burn off calories at a much higher rate than the other two alternatives.

There is no impact on the joints and large distances can be covered on a typical ride.

Don’t spend a fortune on a bike initially, you might not enjoy the experience. Always take a mobile phone with you and some money for a café, taxis or bus rides (you never know if you might develop faults with the bike).

Cycling early mornings avoids rush hour and busy roads.

To summarise: choose something you enjoy, that can be sociable, and if your aim is to lose weight, prepare to get sweaty and slightly breathless.

THE ONE-EYED ALPACA DONALDSON'S VETS One of the most common questions we get asked as a vet is “what is the strangest animal you have treated?”

From my own experience I can answer with: a skunk, various lizards, a meerkat, rare birds and a few other interesting species. I am not a specialist in these areas though, and at Donaldson’s Vets we are lucky to have three vets who have a specific interest in ‘exotic’ animals. I often refer to their knowledge base for support when I encounter something strange.

Last month I was called to see an alpaca called Shale who had apparently injured his eye. On inspection of the eyeball I could see there was a laceration across it’s centre that was so deep it had actually punctured into the eyeball itself.

We still don’t know how this was caused but we suspect a trauma, possibly from a tree branch.

Trauma to the eye occurs relatively frequently in all animals and it causes a ‘corneal ulcer’. We treat these ulcers with topical medication and pain relief when they are simple. If they are not too deep and not too large the lesions will usually heal without the need for surgical intervention.

Surgery to repair the cornea is a delicate procedure and requires careful aftercare from owners. It is not always successful or even possible and so sometimes the emotional decision is taken to remove the eye. Most animals, just like people will cope very well with

this and are often more comfortable once the eye has been removed.

As Shale was a pet, the owners were happy for us to operate to remove the eye, as it was unfortunately beyond saving. We brought Shale to our Shepley branch and gave him an anaesthetic. We used tubes we would normally use for dogs and put him on an anaesthetic machine designed for dogs and cats. He was placed across three tables in the operating theatre.

The surgery involved stitching the eyelids together and then cutting around this area to make two fresh edges. These cuts were then deepened into the socket to essentially scoop out the eyeball itself with much of the surrounding tissue and the old eyelids. We then packed the hole with swabs to stop the bleeding. Once the bleeding had stopped the original incision sites were sutured together to close the hole. Pain relief and antibiotics were provided for 3-4 days.

I am pleased to report Shale went on to make a full recovery and is enjoying life in the sun with his friends. It certainly wasn’t an average day for any of us!

VONDERBRAND TIPS VERTICAL MARKETING If you offer products or services which are specific to an audience with a distinctive or common customer profile, vertical marketing delivers more bang for your buck.

Any group of individuals who share special requirements or preferences are more likely to respond to ads that use ‘industry speak’ or relevant imagery. A vertical market can be very idiosyncratic (barrel-makers sell to brewers), but often they are more circumstantial (on a hot day everyone wants ice cream).

Shops, taxis, restaurants and many other services benefit from vertical marketing in local publications.

3. Email Campaigns With permission granted your self-elect database is the perfect vehicle for very sophisticated vertical marketing. Segmenting the database and paying close attention to behaviour (for example CTR) will increase conversion rates.

If people can take part in the development of their plan, think about their life goals and then have a financial adviser take this information and assist with the creation of a financial plan that fits these goals, then the client will start to see the benefit of financial services.

None of us ever have enough time to sit down and think about our life goals, long term ambitions and how we intend to get there financially, but by offering clients the option to become involved in the financial management process itself, gives people the space and time to do this.

WONDERFUL WINDOW BOXES

As summer fades into early autumn, it can be sad to see beds, borders, pots and planters look a little worse for wear, so why not treat yourself to some late summer and early autumn colour in a pot, planter or, better still, a window box?

weight and texture of the loam, combined with better aeration and drainage from the multipurpose compost. Fill the window box about half full, gently firming it, but don’t compact it or the plants won’t get their roots down so well.

With styles ranging from woven willow to classic hardwood and urban chic aluminium, in all sizes and colours, there is plenty of choice - but make sure it will fit easily on to the window sill!

Next, get the plants into position. Trailing plants like variegated ivies should be placed to cascade over the edges of the window box – this looks fantastic and adds to the apparent size of the display without adding significantly to the weight of the container. A larger plant like the Crassula gives a good focal point and flanking gerberas (for example) will add colour. Gently move the plants until you’re happy with how they look, then fill in gaps between the root balls with more compost, firming gently with your fingers to ensure there’s no subsidence later on. Then water well using a watering can with the rose in place, so imitating rainfall.

Some of my favourites plants to use are hardy Gerberas (these do need a good warm, sunny spot), variegated ivies and the wacky, compact Crassula with fleshy foliage and dusky pink flowers. But take time deciding on the combination that makes YOUR heart sing.

Some window boxes have impermeable liners, in which case add an inch or so of horticultural grit or gravel to provide drainage, so if you do overwater (or it rains too much) the excess water will be less likely to sit around the roots and cause the plants to suffer or die. To keep weight to a minimum, use broken up polystyrene from bedding plants or the packaging around household appliances instead of grit or gravel.

A good quality multi-purpose compost is perfect for a temporary planting like this, but if you intend to replace your plants with other hardy, seasonal stunners later in the year, then a 50:50 mixture of a loam-based compost and a multipurpose one allows for better stability from the 94

Make sure it is secured properly on the window sill – and that you can open the window (or access the box from outside) to keep it adequately watered. The window box will benefit from occasional feeding with high-potash feed and of course will need to be regularly dead-headed!

CLEAR UP YOUR KITCHEN CLUTTER A well-designed kitchen has a place for everything, from cutlery to coffee pods.

QUIRKY BRITAIN Um, sorry, but why are we Brits so polite?

“Err … excuse me, sorry, but … um, I’m afraid you’re standing on my foot.”

The British have politeness written into their DNA. Nowhere else in the world will you find people so ready to put up with discomfort rather than be considered pushy or rude.

How it started is a mystery. The British, as we all know, are a pretty pugnacious lot. We value forthright leaders such as Sir Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher and count the ruthless King Henry VIII and buccaneering sailor Sir Francis Drake amongst the nation’s favourite historical figures. Nowadays the likes of Jeremy Clarkson, JK Rowling, Boris Johnson and Lily Allen are celebrated for their outspoken views, and yet we average Brits are apparently so fearful of causing offence that we remain tight-lipped even when we are subjected to discomfort or inconvenience.

If someone is thoughtlessly blocking our way, we say “excuse me” as if it were our fault, and if we receive grudging service in a restaurant, we’ll not only say “thank you”, we’ll probably even leave a tip.

“Being over-polite is not attractive" Another classic British trait is our talent for understatement. Our tendency to underplay everything was famously demonstrated during the Korean War, when embattled British soldier Brigadier Tom Brodie of the Gloucester Regiment reported to an American superior officer, General Robert H Soule, with the fatal words: “Things are a bit sticky, sir.” He meant that his men were facing an imminent and terrible defeat, but the General’s interpretation was that despite some difficulties, the Gloucesters were successfully holding the line. Unsurprisingly, this miscommunication resulted in huge numbers of British soldiers being killed, wounded and captured.

Media personality Stephen Fry, dubbed ‘the most polite man in Britain’, admitted to BBC presenter Mark Lawson: “Being over-polite is not attractive … I can’t watch someone not saying thank you,

and I can’t not say it myself. If I noticed I hadn’t said it, I’d have to come back in the room and say ‘thank you’. It’s feeble!” If Stephen Fry - an icon of good manners - dislikes over-politeness, what will become of the rest of us? Will we eventually ditch this quintessentially British behaviour in favour of a more direct (some would say more honest) approach?

It doesn’t seem as though this will happen any time soon. A report published by research company Childwise looked at the way children interact with the artificial intelligence bots in devices such as phones and tablets. Researchers found that children were barking commands at their robotic helpers without using “please” and “thank you” and concluded that this behaviour might encourage them to become aggressive in later life. In response to Childwise’s findings, Amazon has now included a politeness feature (known as ‘Magic Word’) in its Echo Dot software and it’s likely that other tech companies will follow Amazon’s lead.

With robots getting in on the act, it’s unlikely that we’ll forget our “pleases” and “thank yous” in the future. In fact, as the technology develops, it may even become easier to tell a stranger that he’s standing on your foot: simply get your unfailingly polite robot to speak to him for you.

Part 100 WHITE WINDOWS It has been recently announced that the Leonard Cheshire Home for the disabled at White Windows, Sowerby, is to be sold, prompting me to look up a few details concerning this building.

LOCAL HISTORY NOTES by

There appears to have been a homestead on the site as far back as the mid-17th century, possibly in the ownership of a John Gaukroger a local clothier. He erected a stone building here sometime between 1624 and 1640 (when he died), the building being called Hazlehurst.

By 1652, Robert Tillotson was the owner in lieu of a debt and his family owned it until 1680 when it was sold by John Tillotson (the Dean of Canterbury) to the prosperous woollen merchant Jonathon Priestley for £240.

Around 1765, Hazelehurst became the property of John Priestley and it was he who built White Windows between 1767 and 1768. The date is inside the front door and the Priestley coat of arms is over the window on the stairs. John’s eldest son Joseph became a JP and also a Deputy Lieutenant of the West Riding. In the days before regular courthouses, offenders were often tried by JPs in their own homes.

During the Luddite riots of 1811-1816, a troop of cavalry was brought in at night and secretly housed in the basement in case they were needed in the area.

In 1840 Marianne Priestley married John Rawson of Brockwell and in 1887 George Priestley sold the house to John Rawson. The Rawson family then owned it until after the Second World War. For two brief periods prior to 1905 the house was used as a high-class boarding school and during the Second World War it was used as a hostel for the ATS. Shortly after the war it was sold to the carpet firm of John Crossley & Sons and used as a hostel for their female employees. The photo is from this date. The house was bought by Leonard Cheshire in 1956 and used as a home for the disabled up to the present time.
