As I write this, the Overgate Garden party has just had a sunny and successful day. Let’s hope this continues for other outdoor events planned in the next few weeks, Brighouse 1940s weekend, Halifax Gala, Elland Lane Children’s treat, It’s a Knockout and Elland Carnival, to name a few. We’ve details of all these and more in the What’s On Guide.

Presumably these carriages are awaiting official dignitaries outside South House, Elland, prior to the St. John’s Ambulance demonstration of 1907. The first of its kind in the town, the ‘demonstration’ proved to be a great success. Owing to the lateness of the Accrington Pipers, the procession set off late but eventually, led by the Elland Band, arrived at the recreation ground. Attractions commenced at the ground with an Indian drill and pyramids. Competitions followed for the local St John’s Ambulance brigades including drills and practical tests in first aid. ℅ ‘Around Halifax’ by Stephen Gee. Tips for the garden - June With the arrival of June it is time to plant up your hanging baskets and summer containers. Using peat free compost is environmentally friendly, but also use slow release fertiliser granules and water retaining gel to help growth.

If you want to do something different, why not grow fruit or veg in a hanging basket? Tomatoes, strawberries, salads and even chillies can work well and eating your own produce is a great reward for your efforts!

If you want to plan for the future then now is the time to plant foxglove seeds. They are easy to grow and they give great height to borders.

Cut back early flowering shrubs once the flowers have died back, such as flowering currant and lilac.

It’s your last chance to sow quick growing annuals, such as nasturtiums, clarkia and lovein-a-mist – or even a few sunflowers. It’s much cheaper to sow your own than buy as seedlings.
