This month is always a busy one; with the Scarecrow festival, Rushbearing (see P8-9) and back to school for the kids. Overgate Hospice also hold their 10th annual Midnight Walk on September 9th so please wish me, and hundreds of others, luck, as we walk 13 miles round hilly Halifax in the dark for a great cause (it’s not too late to enter)!

We also talk to a Piece Hall Trustee about their future plans, the Halifax Buddhist Centre on finding inner peace and how to give your home some vintage style.

The Piece Hall - what’s next?

The opening Yorkshire Day, Tuesday August 1st 2017 was an exciting day for Calderdale. After a refurbishment project taking 3 ½ years and £19 million, the iconic and much loved Piece Hall was re-opened to the public.

The ownership of the Piece Hall has now been handed over from Calderdale Council to an independent body, ‘The Piece Hall Trust’. I spoke to one of the trustees, local woman Ru Ashworth, from Rishworth, about the opening day and the Trust’s vision for the future…

“There was a collective intake of breath when the crowds entered the Piece Hall on the 1st August and it was a proud day for Halifax,” Ru told me.

“As a team, we are thrilled with the results. The square now feels twice as big and it has a great independent Yorkshire vibe.”

“There are still shops and businesses to move in and signage to be put in place but the potential is huge. The rest of the town has been much busier than usual since the opening and the positive economic effect will be wider than the Piece Hall itself.”

Gavin Morton, owner of Gin Lane told us:

“Phenomenal is the word I’d use to describe our experience so far. As a trader, it’s exceeded what I thought in terms of volume of business and we’re seeing a real cross section of people of all ages visiting us, throughout the day for coffees and into the evening to try some of our lovely gins! We’re already recruiting more staff, it’s great for the local economy.”

Plans for the future?

Following on from the opening day, there have been plenty of events including the Saxophone Massive and Welcome weekend in August and at the beginning of September there will be a spectacular aerial performance ‘The Enchanted Chandelier’ (sold out). In September, the Halifax Heritage Festival runs from 7-10th to tie in with the national ‘Heritage Open Day’ event. The People’s Fair will take place on 30th Sep-1st Oct and is planned to be a combination of festival, marketplace and a street party showcasing local talent.

“We’re planning food festivals and music events, we really want to make the most of the space,” Ru explained, “However the building belongs to the people of Halifax and we want your feedback.

We’re open to suggestions and ideas for what you would like to see in the future too, so please let us know.”

‘Ell and back’ walk

F

ancy a challenge? Then what better than Elland Rotary Table’s ‘Ell and back 2017 walk? The walk is a challenging 20 mile circular route to walk or run. There are regular checkpoints, spectacular countryside views and hot food at the end. All organised for you.

The 20 mile supported circular route starts and finishes at Greetland Community Centre and takes in stunning panoramic views over the foothills of the Pennines, Calderdale Valley and West Yorkshire.

The entry fee is £9 for LDWA members (£10 for others) and includes refreshments en route, hot food at the finish and a signed certificate to show to your friends or to frame and hang on your wall.

The walk starts at 8am (although there is a later start for runners of 9.30am) on Sunday 1st October. Yes, entries can be accommodated on the day, but please try to register in advance so you can be included in the catering arrangements.
