L

a casualidad ha decidido que nuestra edición número 54 de Golf Circus Magazine coincida con esta columna de mi modesta opinión, en la que voy a hablar del LIV Golf. Sin querer pecar de redicho y para los que no se hayan percatado, ahí va la explicación: LIV no son letras si no números romanos que representan la cifra 54. También es el número de hoyos que, en tres jornadas, se disputan para dirimir el ganador o los ganadores de los torneos de la LIV Golf League, el circuito que ha movido los cimientos del golf a nivel mundial.

La última noticia es la adquisición de uno de los jugadores más influyentes del planeta golf, Jon Rahm. La oferta irrechazable que ha recibido golfista español ha puesto en jaque a los estamentos que dirigen este deporte y ha divido a todo el mundo, dando tantas razones a favor como en contra de

la decisión de el de Barrika. Adía de hoy, más tarde ya veremos, se hace difícil saber si está dando un paso natural en su carrera, o simplemente, está aprovechando la oportunidad de asegurar su futuro y el de sus próximas generaciones.

Es curioso este movimiento estratégico de controlar a golpe de talonario los deportes más populares. La Fórmula Uno, fútbol, pádel y el golf, y ya veremos cuál será el próximo, no han escapado a lo que se está convirtiendo en una colonización encubierta con un fin incierto y que sólo el tiempo nos desvelará.

Mientras tanto, sigue girando la rueda y hasta el golf con todos sus valores está sucumbiendo sin frenos a los encantos de los petrodólares y a los demás solo nos queda opinar sobre la oportunidad de tener un dinero que no es nuestro, ni nunca lo será, o comprar palomitas y sentarnos a ver el espectáculo. golfcircus.com

¿Qué balance puede hacer de la ocupación de los 3 recorridos del resort a lo largo de 2023?

El 2023 ha sido un año muy exitoso para nuestro resort. No sólo han recibido a más de 130.000 golfistas, sino que además están en un estado fantástico gracias a los trabajos de mantenimiento durante todo el año, especialmente después de nuestras obras de mejora del verano. Creo que este éxito se debe a al fantástico trabajo de todos los equipos y a las mejoras e inversiones realizadas.

n La Cala Resort, sus tres campos de 18 hoyos diseñados por Cabell Robinson y su academia situada junto al campo de golf de seis hoyos pares tres, son la joya de la corona. Pero, además, sus instalaciones incluyen un hotel de 107 habitaciones, campo de fútbol construido según las normas internacionales de la FIFA, centro fitness, gimnasio, pistas de tenis y squash y 3 nuevas canchas de pádel inauguradas recientemente.

Entrevistamos a Sean CorteReal, su Director General, sobre las instalaciones del resort que lo han convertido en uno de los más importantes de España y sus planes de futuro para seguir mejorando en aspectos como la sostenibilidad.

El complejo cuenta con una amplia y variada oferta gastronómica. ¿Podría hablarnos un poco de ella y del tipo de cliente a la que se dirige?

El complejo cuenta con cuatro espacios dedicados a la gastronomía. En primer lugar, tenemos el Clubhouse Bar & Restaurant, situado en el centro del complejo. Este restaurante ofrece aperitivos, bocadillos y hamburguesas, así como platos más elaborados, como los fettuccini marinera o el salmón al horno en pasta brick; La Terraza es el restaurante principal del hotel que sirve cocina mediterránea contemporánea con una carta equilibrada de entrantes y ensaladas, pescados y carnes. Sus platos icónicos son el foie artesano mit-cuit y la ternera Simenthal.

No seríamos un complejo turístico español sin una oferta de tapas. Nuestro restaurante La Bodega ofrece una carta de tapas y platos perfectos para compartir y es uno de los favoritos de nuestros residentes y visitantes. Además, durante los meses de temporada alta (normalmente de mayo a octubre), se traslada a ubicaciones exteriores para que nuestros clientes puedan aprovechar el cálido y agradable clima de la Costa del Sol por las tardes.

Por último, tenemos nuestro Bar & Restaurante Panorámico, situado en el lobby del hotel.

¿Qué tipo de programas ofrece la academia de golf? ¿Están abiertos a golfistas de todos los niveles?

Nuestra Academia ofrece todo tipo de clases, desde individuales a clases en grupo, así como campamentos para niños, club fitting y programas VIP de día completo, que incluyen clases en el campo y almuerzo. Además, cuenta con todas las infraestructuras necesarias y tiene una de las mejores vistas de España al Mediterráneo, así como un campo de 6 hoyos pares 3 que pueden utilizar todos los niveles de golfistas.

¿Qué tipo de alojamiento ofrece el hotel?

El alojamiento en La Cala ofrece un hermoso hotel de 107 habitaciones y una típica arquitectura andaluza, que favorece la vida al aire libre, con corredores exteriores y amplias terrazas y un solárium en las habitaciones.

Además, todas las habitaciones ofrecen impresionantes vistas a los campos de golf o a las montañas con el mar de fondo. ¿Cuáles son los servicios clave para los huéspedes?

Como parte del hotel, en una ubicación privilegiada del complejo, se encuentra el Spa que ofrece un completo circuito de hidroterapia, así como ocho salas de tratamiento, una peluquería y una boutique. La particularidad de este Spa es que cuenta con un jacuzzi exterior con vistas al campo de golf.

Junto al hotel hay pistas de pádel y tenis, con material de alquiler disponible en la recepción. También hay una pista de squash y un gimnasio situado en la Casa Club, donde se imparten numerosas clases para todos los huéspedes y residentes, como yoga, pilates y ciclismo indoor, por nombrar algunas.

Hablemos ahora de la parte inmobiliaria del complejo. ¿Cómo se integran las propiedades con el resto de instalaciones del resort?

La Cala Resort cuenta con una amplia gama de propiedades a lo largo de sus 400 hectáreas que se integran perfectamente en las inmediaciones del complejo. Durante los últimos nueve años ha estado en asociación con Taylor Wimpey España, una empresa líder en la promoción y construcción de propiedades de alta calidad. Actualmente estamos promocionando Solana Village y Belaria, apartamentos de 2 y 3 dormitorios y casas adosadas de 3 dormitorios, respectivamente. Una vez terminadas, añadirán otras 220 unidades al complejo, así como un nuevo centro comercial.

t La Cala Resort, its three 18-hole courses designed by Cabell Robinson and its academy located next to the six-hole par three golf course are the jewel in the crown.

But, in addition, its facilities include a 107-room Hotel, football pitch built to FIFA international standards, fitness centre, gymnasium, tennis, and squash courts and 3 new paddle tennis courts recently inaugurated.

We spoke to Sean Corte-Real, its General Manager, about the resort’s facilities that have made it one of the most important in Spain and its future plans to continue improving in aspects such as sustainability.

What can you tell us about the occupancy of the resort’s three golf courses throughout 2023 and their origins?

2023 has been a very successful year for our resort. Not only have they welcomed over 130,000 golfers but the courses have also been in fantastic shape all year, especially after our summer improvement works. I think the success is due to the fantastic work of all the teams and the improvement and investments made.

What kind of programs does the golf academy offer?

Our Academy offers all type of golf lessons, from individual to group classes, as well as Kids camps and club fitting.

There are also VIP full day programs, which include on course lessons and lunch. The Academy has indoor teaching bays, and has one of the best views in Spain, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, as well as a 6-hole par 3 course that all levels of golfers can use.

The resort boasts a wide and diverse

for golf and spa guests staying at the hotel, they can be booked on the www. lacala.com website. However, standalone golf tee-times and padel/tennis courts can also be booked on the website for any guests living in the local area and not staying at the hotel.

How do the Real Estate developments integrate with the other facilities of the resort?

La Cala Resort features quite a wide range of properties throughout, it´s 400 hectares, and over the last 9 years, has been in partnership with Taylor Wimpey España, a leading player in the Spanish construction industry, to offer high quality properties. We are currently promoting Solana Village and Belaria, 2 and 3-bedrooms apartments and 3-bedrooms townhouses, respectively.

Once finished, they will add another 220 units to the resort, as well as a brand new commercial centre. gastronomic offering. Could you tell us a bit about it and the type of clientele it caters to?

The resort has a lot of dining choices, with four restaurants on site. First, we have the Clubhouse Bar & Restaurant, which is located at the centre of the resort. It offers snacks and sandwiches/burgers as well as more elaborate dishes, such as the Fettuccini Marinera or the Baked Salmon in Brick Pastry.

We then have our main hotel restaurant, La Terraza it serves contemporary Mediterranean cuisine with a wellbalanced menu of starters and salads, fish and meat dishes. The mit-cuit Artisan foie is to die for, and the Simenthal beef is hard to ignore.

We wouldn´t be a Spanish resort without a tapas offering and our La Bodega restaurant is just that! Perfect for sharing plates, La Bodega offers an interesting mix of tapas, each with their little twist, but none without the immense flavour and element of surprise. La Bodega is a little gem in our resort and is a favourite of our residents and guests.

During the high season months (typically May to October), they are moved to outside locations so our clients can take advantage of the warm and pleasant Costa del Sol climate in the evening.

Lastly, we have our Panoramic Bar & Restaurant, located in the hotel lobby, which offers a diverse menu, also served

at the Pool bar during the summertime.

What type of accommodation does the hotel provide? What are the key services for guests? Are there special programs or packages for enthusiasts of the various sports disciplines offered by the resort?

The accommodation at La Cala offers a beautiful hotel of 107 rooms and its Andalusian architecture favours outdoor living, with open air corridors and large terraces and solariums in the rooms. It is U-shaped with all rooms offering stunning views of the golf courses or mountains with the sea in the background.

As part of the hotel, and in a privileged location, lies a luxurious Spa that offers a comprehensive Hydrotherapy circuit as well as 8 treatment rooms, a hairdresser and a boutique. The particularity of this Spa is that it has an outdoor Jacuzzi with a view to the golf course.

Located next to the hotel are three padel courts, as well a tennis court, with rental equipment available at the reception.

There is also a Squash court and a fitness centre located at the Clubhouse where a numbers of classes are available for all guests and residents, such as Yoga, Pilates, and indoor cycling to name a few.

Are there special programs or packages for enthusiasts of the various sports disciplines offered by the resort?

In your opinion, what are the challenges that the resort will face in the future?

Llegó a la dirección de Anantara Villapadierna en 2019 después de liderar uno de los hoteles más emblemáticos de Marbella, Puente Romano. ¿Cuáles fueron sus objetivos al asumir esta posición?

Lo primero fue crear un equipo sólido y un hotel donde la gente quisiera venir.

Tengo que decir que el hotel estuvo bastante tiempo viviendo de espaldas a Marbella y cuando llegué mi primer objetivo fue hacer que se supiera que el hotel estaba abierto a todo el mundo.

El hotel está ubicado en un edificio palaciego entre exquisitos jardines y lleno de obras de arte. Cuéntenos un poco más cómo es el hotel Ananatara Villapadierna.

Para empezar, y sólo hablando del inmueble, diré que el edificio es una magnífica construcción y el sueño del propietario y aquí todo es real, no hay nada de cartón piedra. Pero, el verdadero lujo de hospedarse en Anantara Villapdierna y lo que hace que la gente vuelva, es el equipo humano. Para mí, al final, el edificio, los jardines, etc., es dinero y se puede copiar, pero lo que no se puede replicar es el nivel de compromiso y la pasión de nuestro equipo por cuidar hasta el más mínimo detalle en el servicio a nuestros huéspedes.

¿Qué perfil de cliente elige el hotel? ¿Ha cambiado este perfil durante los últimos años?

Nuestro perfil es un huésped de un nivel económico alto y cada vez recibimos a más gente joven y parejas con niños para los que hemos creado un kids club muy interactivo. Aunque el cambio más significativo y que de verdad hemos notado, es el cliente que viene para estar en familia o pareja y disfrutar del hotel y del relax que ofrece.

El hotel está rodeado de 3 campos de golf, ¿es significativo para el hotel el cliente de golf?

Por supuesto, sobre todo en la temporada alta de golf que coincide con la temporada baja del cliente más vacacional, lo que supone un goteo constante para nosotros.

Además, en estancias largas el cliente viene no sólo a jugar en nuestros campos, sino que quiere probar otros campos de la zona. ¿Cuál es la filosofía detrás de la marca Anantara y cómo se refleja en la experiencia del cliente en Villapadierna?

emblemáticos, pero sobre todo es trato humano al huésped y un personal cercano que conoce y entiende al cliente para hacerlos sentir como locales y no como turistas. Hoy por hoy, los clientes ya no quieren un paseo en helicóptero o en Ferrari, por poner algún ejemplo, hoy lo que quieren es vivir la experiencia de conocer realmente el lugar donde está viajando. Esto es lo que diferencia realmente a Anantara de otros hoteles. ¿Cuál es el enfoque distintivo de Anantara Villapadierna en términos de ofrecer una experiencia gastronómica excepcional a sus huéspedes?

Aquí haré un poco de historia. Cuando llegamos se comía bien, pero la gastronomía no era algo realmente destacable del hotel, esto provocaba que los huéspedes que se alojaban en Villapadierna salieran todos los días a almorzar y cenar fuera.

Estábamos convencidos de que la oferta gastronómica del hotel debía ser extraordinaria y ese ha sido nuestro objetivo, que creo que hemos conseguido.

Nuestras próximas metas son, por un lado, alcanzar cuotas de tarifas medias y ocupación más altas, aunque las hemos mejorado casi en un 40% y por otro, consolidar nuestra oferta gastronómica, queremos que la gente sepa que estamos trabajando en mejorar los conceptos que ya tenemos y en otros nuevos.

Si tuviera que recomendarle a alguien que viniera al hotel Anantara Villapdierna Palace, ¿qué le diría?

Le diría que es un lugar para estar relajado, descansar, hacer deporte y comer excelente. Esto ya de por sí es un lujo, pero, además, el hotel es un paraíso de 125 habitaciones en tres hectáreas, lo que da una idea de la privacidad que disfrutan los huéspedes.

We spoke to Jorge Manzur, the hotel’s director, about what he sees as the true luxury of the hotel and the philosophy behind the Anantara brand and how it is reflected in the guest experience at Villapadierna.

You came to the management of Anantara Villapadierna in 2019 after leading one of Marbella’s most iconic hotels, Puente Romano. What were your objectives when taking on this position?

The first thing was to create a strong team and a hotel where people would want to come. I have to say that the hotel had been living with its back to Marbella for quite some time and when I arrived my first objective was to make it known that the hotel was open to everyone.

The hotel is housed in a palatial building set in exquisite gardens and filled with works of art. Tell us a little more about the Ananatara Villapadierna Hotel.

To begin with, and just talking about the property, I will say that the building is a magnificent construction and the owner’s dream and everything here is real, there is nothing made of papiermâché. But the real luxury of staying at Anantara Villapadierna, and what keeps people coming back, is the staff. For me, at the end of the day, the building, the gardens, etc., is money and can be copied, but what cannot be replicated is the level of commitment and passion of our team to take care of the smallest detail in serving our guests.

What customer profile does the hotel choose, and has this profile changed over the last few years?

Our profile is a guest of a high economic level and we receive more and more young people and couples with children for whom we have created a very interactive kids club. However, the most significant change that we have really noticed is the client who comes to be with his family or couple and enjoy the hotel and the relaxation it offers.

What is the philosophy behind the Anantara brand and how is it reflected in the customer experience at Villapadierna?

Ananatara is a collection of hotels always located in emblematic buildings, but above all it is a humane treatment to the guest and a close staff that knows and understands the customer to make them feel like locals and not tourists. Nowadays, clients no longer want a ride in a helicopter or a Ferrari, for example, today what they want is to live the experience of really getting to know the place where they are travelling. This is what really sets Anantara apart from other hotels.

What is Anantara Villapadierna’s distinctive approach in terms of delivering an exceptional dining experience to its guests?

Here’s a bit of history. When we arrived, the food was good, but the dining was not a real highlight of the hotel, which resulted in guests staying at Villapadierna going out for lunch and dinner every day.

We were convinced that the gastronomic offer of the hotel had to be extraordinary and that has been our goal, which I think we have achieved.

We now have eight restaurants in which every piece of equipment and every culinary offer is extremely well cared for.

In four and a half years we have gone from two restaurants to the eight we have now, and we are a benchmark in terms of gastronomy and variety. In fact, the Michelin Guide has approached us for its recommendations, as well as gastronomic critics.

This variety means that people come here and, above all, that those who do come don’t leave to look for other restaurants.

We have noticed this because car hire has dropped significantly over the last four years.

But I don’t just want to talk about the guests, I also want to talk about the local public, which is important to us. All our restaurants are open to welcome the local public. La Veranda is our most iconic restaurant open every day; Olà Beirut is the Lebanese gastronomy proposal; La Pérgola is a fun food restaurant for light and healthy lunches; La Loggia, which at lunchtime serves traditional Malaga cuisine, in which old recipes from many of the villages of the Malaga mountains have been rescued, at night it is an authentic Italian restaurant; we also have a vegetable garden where you can choose your vegetables and which I think is one of the most photographed parts of the hotel by our guests. Also, right here, in Eddy’s Bar, we have a great variety of sandwiches and vegan dishes and the beach club is another of our spaces where we have created an authentic chiringuito menu with fish of the day and paellas.

Another of the most important areas of the hotel is its Spa, awarded in 2022 as Best Hotel Spa in the Condé Nast awards. How is the offer of this area of the hotel?

We have great professionals from all over the world who attend to guests

and local clients with all the attention that characterises our hotel and that I explained before. In our commitment to wellness we try to offer new things, for example, we bring in therapists who come to visit, just for a while, and who are world-renowned in their disciplines and in the field of wellness.

In terms of facilities, our spa has 2,000 square metres of water and 13 treatment rooms, which I think sets us apart.

Finally, what are the new challenges facing Anantara Villapadierna in 2024?

Our next goals are, on the one hand, to achieve higher average rate and occupancy quotas, although we have improved them by almost 40% and on the other hand, to consolidate our gastronomic offer, we want people to know that we are working on improving the concepts we already have and on new ones.

If you had to recommend someone to come to the Anantara Villapdierna Palace Hotel, what would you tell them?

I would say that it is a place to relax, rest, play sports and eat excellent food. That in itself is a luxury, but the hotel is also a 125-room paradise on three hectares, which gives you an idea of the privacy guests enjoy. www.anantara.com •

Atravesada por tres ríos, uno de ellos, el Guadalmina, forma un viaducto conocido como “Las Angosturas” por lo angosto del terreno, que junto con “La Charca de las Mozas”, una hoya en el lecho del río declarado por la Junta de Andalucía Monumento Natural, constituyen algunos de los paisajes más bellos del municipio.

Con una gran tradición hostelera, los primeros establecimientos se abrieron en los años 60, se pueden recorrer sus calles a golpe de restaurante probando sus especialidades.

Natural surroundings play the leading role in Benahavís. Three rivers go through the village. Some of the most beautiful natural landscape includes one of these rivers, the Guadalmina River. It forms a viaduct known as “Las Angosturas” (The Narrows) because of the narrowness of the ground and it is located next to the “Charco de las Mozas” (Pond of the Lasses), a hollow in the bed of the river that has been declared Andalucía’s Natural Monument.

Benahavis has 300 days of sunshine a year as it shares the same weather as the Costa del Sol. Thus, any season of the year is perfect to enjoy the hiking trails around it and many hills from which you have views of the Spanish coast and parts of the African coast a hundred kilometers away.

Gastronomy is another jewel of Benahavis and it is honored at the Hotel School Sabor a Málaga, a reference top culinary training centre. Benahavis has a great hotel tradition; the first restaurants opened in the 60’s and you can go all over the streets eating different restaurant specialties.

La palabra desestacionalización ha sido el gran objetivo del turismo en Marbella desde hace años. ¿Cree que se ha conseguido el objetivo?

La realidad es que la temporada alta turística ya no se circunscribe a los meses de verano, sino que comienza mucho antes y se alarga con posterioridad.

Hemos avanzado mucho en este sentido y, lo más importante, es que no es solo una percepción, sino que es una realidad que está avalada por las estadísticas de ocupación turística que se conocen mes tras mes y por los propios balances que realizan empresarios y comerciantes.

Nuestro clima, nuestra potente oferta de ocio y nuestra apuesta promocional en mercados emergentes tras la pandemia, como el de los nómadas digitales, están dando unos buenísimos resultados para romper la estacionalidad.

En este sentido, ¿qué papel cree que ha jugado el golf?

El segmento del golf ha sido y sigue siendo uno de los grandes pilares de nuestra oferta turística., especialmente en los meses en los que, teóricamente, Carlota Ciganda se debe registrar una menor afluencia de visitantes. Contamos con 15 instalaciones,

la mayor concentración en una ciudad de toda España, y todos y cada uno de ellos, son referentes de calidad y excelencia, lo que nos convierte en un destino cada vez más demandado no solo por aficionados a este deporte, sino por profesionales de élite. Nuestro clima, único en el mundo, juega un papel determinante para que miles de personas nos elijan. Este es un segmento con millones de seguidores en todo el mundo que durante semanas han tenido sus ojos puestos en nuestro destino y en nuestras instalaciones. Eso supone un salto cualitativo de un valor incalculable para la marca Marbella y también cuantitativo, por el impacto económico que ha tenido en el sector turístico.

En este sentido, ¿Cuál ha sido el feedback de la Solheim Cup para Marbella?

Los datos de este torneo son espectaculares. Hay que tener en cuenta que su retransmisión se siguió en 461 millones de hogares de todo el mundo, espectadores que pudieron comprobar de primera mano las virtudes de la Costa del Sol y de nuestra ciudad. Si hablamos del impacto económico, el retorno directo para Marbella, según datos de los organizadores y de los agentes del sector, ha sido de 29,1 millones de euros, multiplicando por 15 la inversión realizada por el Ayuntamiento para apoyar esta competición. Durante el evento, 90.000 asistentes, procedentes mayoritariamente de Estados Unidos, Inglaterra, Canadá o Alemania, se han alojado en más de 13.000 habitaciones, el 60 por ciento en hoteles de nuestra ciudad. Hay pocas citas que puedan presumir de cifras como estas.

Además de Alcaldesa de Marbella es usted Delegada de Turismo. ¿Puede darnos las líneas maestras de los objetivos y actuaciones de su Delegación?

Sin duda alguna, la aprobación del nuevo planeamiento urbanístico será un hito para Marbella, sobre todo porque nos permitirá seguir siendo un imán para inversiones potentes que nos sigan conduciendo por la senda del progreso, la riqueza y la generación de empleo. La tramitación tanto del Plan General de Ordenación Municipal (PGOM) como del Plan de Ordenación Urbana (POU) está en una fase muy avanzada. Dos documentos que trazarán las líneas del presente y del futuro con la mirada puesta en la sostenibilidad, que preserva el modelo de ciudad jardín que nos ha convertido en un destino único y que apuesta por un municipio amable con grandes equipamientos.

Mayoress and Tourism Delegate of the Marbella Town Hall The word “deseasonalisation” has been the main objective of tourism in Marbella for years. Do you think this objective has been achieved?

The reality is that the high tourist season is no longer confined to the summer months, but starts much earlier and extends afterwards. We have made a lot of progress in this regard and, most importantly, it is not just a perception, but a reality that is backed up by the tourist occupancy statistics that are known month after month and by the actual balance sheets drawn up by businessmen and shopkeepers. Our climate, our powerful leisure offers and our promotional efforts in emerging markets after the pandemic, such as digital nomads, are giving very good

results in terms of breaking seasonality.

In this sense, what role do you think golf has played?

The golf segment has been and continues to be one of the main pillars of our tourism offer, especially in the months when, theoretically, there should be a lower influx of visitors. We have 15 facilities, the largest concentration in one city in Spain, and each and every one of them is a benchmark of quality and excellence, which makes us a destination that is increasingly in demand not only by fans of this sport, but also by elite professionals. Our climate, unique in the world, plays a determining role in thousands of people choosing us. It is a luxury to be able

to play golf, in the open air and with almost spring-like temperatures, in the middle of November, to which is added a complementary offer of excellence.

Marbella is a city that offers the perfect combination of tourism and sport, especially in a sport such as golf. From your position as mayoress of the municipality, how do you coordinate these two areas of the town hall?

From the very beginning we have been committed to this synergy between tourism and sport, a close coordination between both areas that has been giving very good results for the city with the celebration of international events such as the Ironman, the World Padel Tour, the

These competitions not only have a great economic impact in terms of visitor arrivals and hotel occupancy, but are also an invaluable advertising showcase for our offer.

2023 has been a record year for major golf tournaments on the Costa del Sol and in Marbella. Have these events contributed to the impact of the Marbella brand?

Undoubtedly, 2023 will go down in the history of our city for the development of a competition such as the Solheim Cup on the Costa del Sol, an event that has strengthened us in many markets and has positioned us in others as a unique golf destination. This is a segment with millions of followers around the world who for weeks have had their eyes on our destination and our facilities. This is a qualitative leap of incalculable value for the Marbella brand and also quantitative, due to the economic impact it has had on the tourism sector.

In this sense, what has been the feedback of the Solheim Cup for Marbella?

The figures for this tournament are spectacular. We have to take into account that its broadcast was followed in 461

million homes around the world, viewers who were able to see first-hand the virtues of the Costa del Sol and our city.

In terms of economic impact, the direct return for Marbella, according to data from the organisers and sector agents, was 29.1 million euros, multiplying by 15 the investment made by the Town Hall to support this competition. During the event, 90,000 attendees, mainly from the United States, England, Canada and Germany, have stayed in more than 13,000 rooms, 60 percent in hotels in our city. There are few events that can boast figures like these.

As well as being the Mayoress of Marbella, you are also the Delegate for Tourism. Can you give us the outline of the objectives and actions of your Delegation?

The Marbella brand is stronger than ever. Our city is recording historic figures in terms of tourism, business creation and employment and we have achieved two important challenges that any destination dreams of: breaking with seasonality and securing a visitor of quality and excellence. So our goal is to continue working along the path we set ourselves, especially during the pandemic, in order to emerge stronger from a global health crisis that gave rise to new habits among travellers and new market niches, such as digital nomads. We will continue to work hand in hand with the private sector on promotional campaigns at the most important tourism fairs in the world and in strategic markets such

as the United Kingdom, the United States and Northern Europe, as well as hosting major events that will make us a global showcase. These are strategic lines that we will also promote with the Great Cities Plan, which foresees an investment of ten million euros to strengthen aspects such as sustainability, accessibility and digitalisation.

In your opinion, what are the greatest challenges facing the city in the coming years?

Without a doubt, the approval of the new urban planning will be a milestone for Marbella, above all because it will allow us to continue to be a magnet for powerful investments that will continue to lead us along the path of progress, wealth and job creation.

The processing of both the General Municipal Development Plan (PGOM) and the Urban Development Plan (POU) is at a very advanced stage. These two documents will outline the lines of the present and the future with a view to sustainability, preserving the garden city model that has made us a unique destination, and which is committed to a friendly municipality with major facilities. marbella.es •

Cristóbal Parra Jiménez ha sido durante cuarenta años la cabeza visible de una de las familias pioneras en el sector hotelero de Marbella, desde que su padre abriera el mítico Hotel San Cristóbal en la década de los 60. El empresario siempre tuvo claro que Marbella debía apostar por la excelencia como seña de identidad y esa misma filosofía ha sido la que lleva al holding familiar a tomar la decisión de llevar a cabo la construcción del nuevo Óbal Urban Hotel, una clara apuesta por seguir siendo el icono hotelero de Marbella.

El hotel, antiguo Hotel San Cristóbal, ha sido uno de los iconos hoteleros de la ciudad desde su primera apertura en los años 60. ¿Por qué se decide en este momento hacer esta importante inversión y acometer la reforma integral?

Efectivamente, el Hotel San Cristóbal ha sido durante años un referente para la industria hotelera de Marbella, pero también la ciudad se ha convertido en un referente absoluto del turismo, posicionándose como un destino sostenible y de calidad. Entendimos que nosotros teníamos que ir en la misma línea y que no bastaba con hacer una reforma de las instalaciones. Por eso hemos decidido dar un paso más, apostando por seguir siendo un icono en Marbella, pero ahora con un nuevo nombre y una nueva categoría, en un hotel completamente nuevo.

Tras su retirada de la primera línea de la empresa familiar y ahora con más tiempo libre, nos cuenta cómo será el nuevo hotel y lo que supondrá para la ciudad.

Esto en sí, es un reto muy importante, pero la experiencia adquirida durante tantos años y la incorporación de grandes profesionales del sector al equipo del nuevo Óbal Urban Hotel, nos dan la confianza de que estamos haciendo lo correcto en el mejor momento posible.

¿Cómo describiría el nuevo diseño del hotel?

Realmente, Óbal Urban Hotel nace como un hotel totalmente nuevo, diferente al antiguo San Cristóbal. Hemos querido hacer un diseño de hotel urbano, pero sin renunciar a nuestros orígenes y por supuesto, sin renunciar a nuestra ubicación e historia en Marbella. Para ello, hemos apostado por la calidad de los servicios e instalaciones, además de por elementos diferenciadores como la sostenibilidad y la certificación de la calidad.

El hotel se encuentra en pleno centro histórico y a escasos 200 metros de la playa lo que sin duda atraerá al turismo vacacional, pero, más allá de este tipo de cliente. ¿Qué otros perfiles de cliente esperan acoger?

Creemos que seguirá siendo un hotel emblemático por su ubicación y obviamente el cliente vacacional será muy importante. Más allá de este cliente, dentro de la reforma hemos incluido una nueva zona de salas de reuniones que hacen del nuevo Óbal Urban un hotel perfecto para grupos de incentivos o reuniones. El segmento de cliente de

empresa tendrá en un nuestro hotel, por ubicación y relación calidad – precio, una elección perfecta para sus viajes de trabajo.

También hay que pensar que estamos en la Costa del Golf y por lo tanto el segmento golf debe convertirse en uno de los pilares sobre los que se asiente nuestro hotel.

Hablando de perfiles de cliente.

Marbella es una ciudad con una intensa vida social y no sólo para el turismo en los meses de verano, también para la comunidad local el resto del año. ¿Será una prioridad para el hotel atraer también a los locales?

Si es así, ¿cómo se integrará la cultura local en la experiencia del hotel?

Seguir siendo el hotel de todos los habitantes de Marbella, está en nuestro ADN y no podemos renunciar a ello.

Nosotros somos una familia muy asentada en Marbella y no podemos dar la espalda a nuestra ciudad.

Tanto nuestro Restaurante Alameda como nuestro 360º Blue Sky Bar están abiertos al público local, y a partir de ahora mucho más, ya que el hotel tendrá un ascensor directo al rooftop para que el cliente que no se aloja pueda acceder con mucha más facilidad. Además, bajar nuestra recepción a la planta de la calle nos hace aún más accesibles.

En el capítulo de los espacios reservados al ocio, el hotel contará con el restaurante Alameda y el rooftop 360 Blue Sky Bar. ¿Cómo serán en líneas generales estos espacios?

El Restaurante Alameda y nuestro 360º Blue Sky Bar son dos conceptos diferentes, pero complementarios. Por un lado, esperamos que el Restaurante y Cafetería Alameda siga siendo el lugar de reunión de muchos de nuestros vecinos, pero dotado de la calidad y el servicio de un 4 Estrellas en el que seguiremos apostando por el concepto de Km0 en la materia prima; por otro, el 360º Blue Sky Bar será un espacio de ocio para nuestros huéspedes, pero también para los visitantes locales con unas vistas espectaculares del centro de la ciudad y el casco antiguo. ¿Cuál será la filosofía del restaurante Alameda en cuanto a sostenibilidad en las prácticas gastronómicas? ¿Colaborará con productores locales? ¿Tendrá un menú dirigido a los clientes vegetarianos?

Como decía antes, no queremos olvidarnos de nuestros orígenes, ni de todo ese bagaje adquirido durante años, pero también hemos hecho una apuesta clara por la sostenibilidad tanto en el aspecto técnico como en el hecho de potenciar al máximo los proveedores locales que nos van a aportar ese plus de calidad en las materias primas con las que

vamos a trabajar en nuestra cocina.

Queremos hacer una cocina que sea capaz de aglutinar a todos los públicos, tanto el local como el internacional, a la vez que pueda satisfacer todos los gustos y, evidentemente, el mercado de los clientes veganos es importante. De hecho, hemos incorporado personal que ha trabajado anteriormente en restaurantes que apostaban por la cocina vegana, que por otro lado está muy en auge en estos últimos años.

El pasado año decidió retirarse y dejar paso a la gestión de la tercera generación de la familia Parra. Ahora que no está usted en el día a día ha empezado a jugar al golf. ¿Es socio de algún club? ¿Recomendaría el deporte?

Sí, soy socio del Real Club de Golf Guadalmina y la verdad es que retirarme un poco del día a día del hotel me ha dado la oportunidad de dedicarle tiempo a esas aficiones que antes no podía atender como es el golf. Para mí es un deporte que, por un lado, te reta a mejorar tus golpes y por otro, te permite estar en contacto con la naturaleza y disfrutar de la gran variedad de campos de golf que tenemos en Marbella. En definitiva, el golf para mí es un deporte recomendable al 100% para todas las edades.

CRISTÓBAL PARRA JIMÉNEZ Cristóbal Parra Jiménez has been the visible head of one of the pioneering families in the Marbella hotel sector for forty years, ever since his father opened the legendary Hotel San Cristóbal in the 1960s. The businessman was always clear that Marbella should be committed to excellence as a hallmark of its identity and it is this same philosophy that has led the family holding company to take the decision to build the new Óbal Urban Hotel, a clear commitment to remain Marbella’s hotel icon.

After his retirement from the front line of the family business and now with more time on his hands, he tells us what the new hotel will be like and what it will mean for the town.

The hotel, formerly the Hotel San Cristóbal, has been one of the city’s iconic hotels since it first opened in the 1960s. Why did you decide to make this important investment and undertake a complete refurbishment at this time?

Indeed, the Hotel San Cristóbal has been for years a reference for the hotel industry in Marbella, but also the city has become an absolute reference for tourism, positioning itself as a sustainable and quality destination. We understood that we had to go along the same lines and that it was not enough to simply refurbish the facilities. That is why we have decided to go one step further, betting on continuing to be an icon in Marbella, but now with a new name and a new category, in a completely new hotel.

This in itself is a major challenge, but the experience gained over so many years and the incorporation of great professionals in the sector to the team of the new Óbal Urban Hotel, give us the confidence that we are doing the right thing at the best possible time.

How would you describe the new design of the hotel?

Actually, Óbal Urban Hotel is born as a totally new hotel, different from the old San Cristóbal. We wanted to design an urban hotel, but without renouncing

our origins and, of course, without renouncing our location and history in Marbella. To do this, we have opted for quality services and facilities, as well as differentiating elements such as sustainability and quality certification.

The hotel is located in the heart of the historic centre and just 200 metres from the beach, which will undoubtedly attract holiday tourism, but, beyond this type of client, what other client profiles do you expect to welcome?

We believe that it will continue to be an emblematic hotel due to its location and obviously the holiday client will be very important. Beyond this client, within the refurbishment we have included a new meeting room area that makes the new Óbal Urban a perfect hotel for incentive groups or meetings. The business client segment will find in our hotel, due to its location and quality-price ratio, a perfect choice for their business trips.

We must also bear in mind that we are on the Costa del Golf and therefore the golf segment must become one of the pillars on which our hotel is based.

Talking about customer profiles.

Marbella is a city with an intense social life and not only for tourism in the summer months, but also for the local community the rest of the year.

to be the meeting place for many of our neighbours, but with the quality and service of a 4-star restaurant where we will continue to focus on the concept of Km0 in the raw materials; on the other hand, the 360º Blue Sky Bar will be a leisure space for our guests, but also for local visitors with spectacular views of the city centre and the old town.

Both our Alameda Restaurant and our 360º Blue Sky Bar are open to the local public, and from now on much more, as the hotel will have a direct lift to the rooftop so that guests who are not staying here can access it much more easily. In addition, lowering our reception to the street level makes us even more accessible.

What will be the philosophy of the Alameda restaurant in terms of sustainability in gastronomic practices? Will it collaborate with local producers? Will it have a menu aimed at vegetarian customers?

As I said before, we don’t want to forget our origins, nor all that baggage acquired over the years, but we have also made a clear commitment to sustainability both in the technical aspect and in the fact of promoting local suppliers as much as possible, which will give us that extra quality in the raw materials we are going to work with in our cuisine.

In terms of spaces reserved for leisure, the hotel will have the Alameda restaurant and the 360 Blue Sky Bar rooftop. What will these spaces be like in general terms?

The Alameda Restaurant and our 360º Blue Sky Bar are two different but complementary concepts. On the one hand, we hope that the Alameda Restaurant and Cafeteria will continue

We want to create a cuisine that is capable of appealing to all audiences, both local and international, while at the same time satisfying all tastes and,

obviously, the vegan customer market is important. In fact, we have taken on staff who have previously worked in restaurants that were committed to vegan cuisine, which has been booming in recent years.

Last year you decided to retire and give way to the management of the third generation of the Parra family.

Now that you are not in day-to-day life, you have taken up golf. Are you a member of a club and would you recommend the sport?

Yes, I am a member of the Real Club de Golf Guadalmina and the truth is that retiring a little from the day to day running of the hotel has given me the opportunity to dedicate time to those hobbies that I couldn’t attend to before, such as golf. For me it is a sport that, on the one hand, challenges you to improve your shots and, on the other hand, allows you to be in contact with nature and enjoy the great variety of golf courses that we have in Marbella.
