a pilas.

General manager of La Hacienda Links Golf Resort
A
fter a profound transformation that has made La Hacienda Links Golf Resort one of the most exclusive golf destinations in Europe, General Manager Javier Jiménez Casquet reflects on the challenges, achievements and future of this privileged enclave on the Costa del Sol. From the renovation of the links course and the arrival of Fairmont to its international recognition and commitment to sustainability, La Hacienda is projected as a benchmark of excellence in golf, tourism and hospitality.
La Hacienda has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years, from the renovation of the links course to the creation of new spaces such as the halfway house. What has been the biggest challenge in this evolution and how has it been received by the players? The biggest challenge has undoubtedly been the change in vision and model of service delivery at the club. During the Alcaidesa era, the strategy was focused on attracting many customers, with less emphasis on service and experience. I am not saying that this strategy was wrong, as it worked and delivered great financial results thanks to excellent marketing. However, this was not Millenium’s vision when it acquired the resort, particularly about the future development of a fivestar hotel. All the investment that has been made has meant a profound change in the business model and, of course, the operating system of the club. We have doubled the number of staff, implemented a training system in the operations team so that everyone knows their role and we can measure times, customer satisfaction, etc. We have also significantly increased the level of maintenance on the courses, not only by employing more staff, but also by making a significant investment in machinery.
In short, there has been a transformation of the business model that has positioned La Hacienda among the top golf destinations in Spain. This has been made possible not only by the investments, but also by the daily efforts of the entire team that forms part of the club. Both existing and new staff have been committed to the project and have adapted to the new reality with dedication and commitment. The response could not have been better. 2024 was a record year in terms of both visitor numbers and turnover, consolidating La Hacienda Links Golf Resort as a key golf destination on the Costa del Sol. And according to our forecasts, 2025 will be even better. The resort’s owners have made significant efforts to improve and maintain excellence to position themselves as one of the most important golf and luxury tourism destinations in Europe. This has resulted in several national and international awards. What does this recognition mean to the resort? I have to say that our greatest reward is, without a doubt, the satisfaction of every client who enjoys a golf experience at La Hacienda. That’s why we listen to every opinion and experience and act with agility to constantly improve and offer the best of golf at our club.

EXCELLENCE, LUXURY, SUSTAINABILITY AND A TRANSFORMATION INTO EUROPE’S GOLFING ELITE

But it is also true that we all like to be recognised for our efforts and good work. And this series of awards represents just that: the golf industry’s recognition of the enormous dedication and commitment of each person involved in this great project. The arrival of Fairmont is a big step for La Hacienda Links Golf Resort, what impact do you expect this opening to have on the international positioning of the resort and the overall visitor experience? Since the arrival of Millenium and the acquisition of the hotel site, we at La Hacienda have been very excited about the possibility of having a first-class hotel to complete the resort’s tourism offering. The confirmation that it would be managed by Fairmont, one of the great international luxury brands, raised those expectations even higher. Fairmont brings not only a prestigious brand name, but also solid experience in the sector and strong recognition in key international markets. Its opening represents an important opportunity to attract new customer profiles, particularly those already focused on Southern Europe as a golf destination. We are confident that the impact will be very positive, and we are working closely with the Fairmont team.
010 LA HACIENDA
Another key aspect is the addition of new restaurants. Having two Michelin-starred chef Benito Gomez on board was the real cherry on top of the project. I had the opportunity to meet him and taste his cuisine at Dalmar, Fairmont’s restaurant, and I am convinced that his proposal, based on top quality produce and with a strong Andalusian identity, is a perfect fit. In terms of marketing, how does this affect the markets that the resort has traditionally served? And new markets? Since we began the process of rebranding La Hacienda, we have worked with a clear vision to improve the resort’s offering in all aspects, from the gaming experience to the food and beverage, service and hospitality. All with a common goal: to attract new customer profiles. And the results have not been long in coming. We are already seeing a growing interest and flow of visitors from the United States, as well as a promising movement from the Asian market, where we are focusing much of our promotional efforts.
“Our commitment to sustainability is firm and will continue to guide the development of each new project at La Hacienda.” Having a brand like Fairmont - present in 15 golf resorts around the world - within the resort has been a major boost to our internationalisation strategy. Its prestige and global recognition, especially in strategic markets such as the Americas and Asia, strengthens La Hacienda’s positioning on the map of major international golf destinations, alongside the leading names in the sector. In the case of the European market, where we already have a solid presence, the alliance with Fairmont will allow us to further strengthen our leadership alongside the leading names in the sector. Furthermore, the fact that we are the only Fairmont in Spain and Portugal is a clear competitive advantage. This exclusivity, combined with the appeal of a consolidated luxury brand, opens doors to a wide portfolio of customers who already know and appreciate the Fairmont brand, accelerating our visibility and projection in new markets. One of the most interesting events for Hacienda Links will be the charity tournament organised with the Pau Gasol Foundation. Tell us a little about this event. For us it is very important news, the confirmation of several years of work to make such an important event possible in every way, and that it will be held at our resort. It is a real honour to be able to host a charity tournament that, in addition to bringing together top international sports personalities and teams who will come to enjoy and compete, has a clear charitable vocation in line with the objectives of
the Gasol Foundation, such as raising funds to prevent childhood obesity and giving visibility to this serious problem that many still do not see. One in three children in Spain suffers from obesity and this reality affects their physical health, their self-esteem and their future. This is a three-day event where the teams will be able to enjoy our golf courses, Links and Heathland, as well as the Fairmont Hotel. There will also be sporting activities, complementary activities for supporters, a gala dinner and a charity auction of donated items, all in aid of the Gasol Foundation. We are convinced that this will be a great event and a success in achieving the objectives of solidarity. We therefore invite any person or organisation interested in participating or collaborating as a sponsor to contact us. Finally, what are the biggest challenges for the resort in the coming years? One of the biggest challenges for La Hacienda Links Golf Resort in the coming years is to consolidate our position as one of the leading golf destinations in Europe and the Mediterranean. To achieve this, it is clear to us that we must maintain high standards of service and continue in a process of continuous improvement. With this in mind, we will continue to expand our presence in international markets. Sustainability is another fundamental pillar of our vision for the future. At La Hacienda Links Golf Resort, we have implemented numerous initiatives to minimise our environmental impact, such as the installation of solar panels, the renovation of the pumping station and the introduction of more sustainable grass varieties adapted to the local climate. These improvements have enabled us to significantly reduce water consumption and the use of chemicals. We are also carrying out a progressive reforestation programme with native species, which will benefit the biodiversity of the environment and improve the resort’s integration into the landscape. These are not the only measures we are implementing. Our commitment to sustainability is firm and will continue to guide the development of each new project at La Hacienda. lahaciendagolf.com •

All courses are completely different, a feature much appreciated by the players who want to play different course concepts, but with the same quality. The courses located in the Region of Murcia are three parkland courses, but with fundamental differences between them; Hacienda del Álamo and Saurines share some of the essence of a desert-parkland style, but only at first glance, as the first was designed to host major events, while the second is based on aesthetics and is arguably one of the European desert courses most akin to Arizona. The third, Mar Menor, was designed by Dave Thomas and Jack Nicklaus, a parkland resort in its purest form without a doubt where 2 designs have been integrated in 1.

Saurines de la Torre Golf is a Jack Nicklaus design with huge similarities
to the desert courses of Las Vegas and Arizona designed by him, but with a concept of linked holes. It features undulating fairways through to sand dunes and greens with impressive contouring, few bunkers and a large central lake.
Since it opened, the Saurines Golf course has been a benchmark in the area, but it lacked a putting area and a wellequipped clubhouse, improvements which UGOLF have now made, and which players have been able to enjoy.

Entrevista a

What is the gastronomic proposal of the Alameda restaurant under its new management, and how does it differ from the culinary offer of Marbella? In this new phase at Restaurante Alameda we want to recover traditional cuisine, but with a modern touch. Our gastronomic proposal is structured in two moments: day and night. From Monday to Friday for lunch we offer a renewed menu that has been a classic of the city and that many people remember with affection. We maintain the traditional stews and those flavours that connect directly with home cooking, with what excites and comforts. In the evening, the experience is transformed for dinner. We are committed to tapas cuisine as part of Spain’s gastronomic heritage, with a more modern presentation designed to surprise. We want to attract both the international client, who is searching for an authentic local experience, as well as the local client, who wants recognisable flavours in the unique surroundings of the hotel. During the weekend, the tapas menu incorporates special dishes that are creating a lot of expectation: the lobster with potatoes and fried eggs on Saturdays and the roasted poussin on Sundays are undoubtedly reasons to come to Restaurante Alameda. 036 ÓBAL URBAN HOTEL
Within this offer, wine and “copeo” are also protagonists. We have created a selection of national and international references, with affordable prices both by the glass and by the bottle. We want good wine to be part of the Alameda experience. As a perfect closing, the rooftop 360 Blue Sky Bar is the ideal place to enjoy the “tardeo”, watch the sunset over the centre of Marbella or extend the evening after dinner. Well-crafted cocktails, signature gin and tonics or an exceptional whisky make this space the ideal complement to our gastronomic offer, without forgetting our events where our professionals provide a friendly service in a warm atmosphere and a privileged location. The Alameda Restaurant has been one of Marbella’s classics for 60 years. What has it preserved of that tradition today? Alameda is part of the memories of many generations of Marbella residents,
and we are very conscious of the emotional value that this has. One of our objectives is to respect its essence and preserve the welcoming spirit and the cuisine of traditional flavours. Although I personally was not part of that historic period of the restaurant, I greatly value everything I have been told about the old Alameda, and I have taken it as one of the key points when building this new project. We want those who walk through the door to feel that they have returned to a familiar place, with soul, but also with a renewed look, where attention is paid to detail and the overall experience. Alameda retains its soul, but is projected into the future with respect, enthusiasm and a lot of dedication from the whole team. How do you integrate local and seasonal products into the restaurant’s menu, and what role does sustainability play in your cuisine? Part of my professional background comes from the kitchen. For years I worked as an executive chef in five-star hotels, which gives me a solid base and a
sensitivity for the product, its treatment and its origin. Today, in my role as food and beverage director, I am fortunate to work hand in hand with the hotel’s chef, Marilú Montece, with whom I share the vision of a cuisine focused on seasonal produce and respect for traditional flavours. This daily collaboration is key to give coherence to our entire gastronomic proposal. We work with local and seasonal ingredients whenever possible. We source from trusted suppliers, many of them local, and we search for each dish to reflect this respect for authenticity and the environment. It is not just a question of taste, but also of responsibility: supporting local produce, reducing environmental impact and offering honest cuisine. In addition, we have made a firm commitment to an adjusted and wellmeasured offer to minimise waste. We want to be sustainable not only from the origin of the ingredients, but also in the day-to-day management of the restaurant, from purchasing to service.
passion, respect for the history of the place and a clear vocation for excellence. Throughout my career, both in the kitchen and in the management of five-star hotels, I have understood that the true value of a project lies in people, in coherence and in the ability to generate a memorable experience. At Alameda we have an enthusiastic team, an involved ownership and a committed management, led by Manuel Murga, who firmly believes in the potential of this space within the hotel’s overall proposal. Our aim is for Alameda to regain a prominent place in Marbella’s gastronomic scene, being faithful to its essence and at the same time connecting with what the client is searching for today: quality, proximity and authenticity.
What kind of public do you hope to attract to Alameda restaurant and how do you plan to connect with both local and international clientele? Our aim is for Alameda to be a meeting point for local and international visitors. One of our great strengths is our location, right in the heart of Marbella, which allows us to be accessible to everyone. We believe in a cuisine that needs no translation, because it speaks the language of flavour, of well-worked products and of professional and friendly service. To achieve this connection with different customer profiles, we are committed to clear communication, a flexible and seasonal menu and, above all, an experience that lasts in the memory. In the end, our cuisine is also a way of getting to know our country, and it is one of the main reasons why people visit us. You have more than 20 years of experience in the hotel sector managing gastronomic projects. How do you face the challenge at Alameda Restaurant? What new developments will we see? For me, Alameda is more than a new
project, it is an opportunity to put into practice everything I have learnt throughout my career and to continue growing. I face this challenge with

And the most important thing: this new gastronomic stage is not limited to the Alameda restaurant. El verdadero secreto detrás de Valderrama
Entrevista a

V ADOLFO Interview with
RAMOS Head Greenkeeper at Real Club de Golf Valderrama
The real secret of Valderrama
alderrama is recognised as the best golf course in Continental Europe, and year after year it is ranked among the top 100 in the world. This reputation, reinforced by its deep competitive gene, has some secrets that Adolfo Ramos, its Head Greenkeeper and responsible for its maintenance in the 2006 Volvo Masters, followed by the 2007 and 2008 editions, the 2016 Open de España and all the editions of the Andalucía Valderrama Masters, reveals to us. In 2023, the club wrote a new chapter in its history with its partnership with LIV Golf, the innovative league that revolutionised the international golf scene. With this agreement, Valderrama reaffirmed its philosophy of hosting only the most prestigious tournaments, consolidating its position as a premium destination and benchmark for elite golf worldwide. Now, in 2025, Adolfo Ramos and the Valderrama agronomy team face the third LIV Golf League tournament with the pride of being the highest rated course in the league along with Hong Kong, but also with the commitment to maintain the high standard of the course.
How has the LIV Golf League schedule affected course planning and maintenance? The final date of the tournament has a fundamental impact on the club’s annual planning, both organisationally and agronomically. The course needs a lot of cultural work to prepare it for the stress and demands of a professional tournament. While other courses carry out operations such as spiking and replenishing the greens two or three times a year, at Valderrama we concentrate all the cultural work in a single moment, during the scheduled closure of the course. This allows us to carry out all the necessary work with precision and without significantly affecting the playing experience. The date of LIV Golf and the Easter calendar are key in determining the exact schedule of activities on the course. It is important to coordinate the cultural activities so that they have as little impact as possible on the final preparations for the tournament. Since I started as head greenkeeper at Valderrama, we have held professional tournaments in different months of the year - April, June, July, September, October and November - which has forced us to adapt the course preparation to very different conditions. It is not the same to face the intense heat of July as it is to face the torrential rain of October or November. We are working with two unpredictable elements: the weather and the grass, a living being in constant evolution. Valderrama has a reputation for high standards and perfection. What aspects of the course need special

attention for this tournament? Every aspect of the course - greens, bunkers, tees, fairways - is crucial when preparing for a professional competition. It is not just about preparing a course for golf but presenting it in the best possible condition for a globally televised tournament.
hours of work to ensure that each bunker is up to the standard required for the event. In fact, it is not uncommon to see professional players deliberately aiming for the bunker when they are unsure of their shot to the green, reflecting both the difficulty of the greens and the quality of the bunkers.
While all areas need attention, the greens and bunkers require the most work. Presenting greens that are hard, fast, perfectly undulating, healthy and visually impeccable is no easy task, especially given the limitations imposed by the weather. Furthermore, these results are not achieved from one day to the next but are the result of continuous and meticulous work.
Are there any new innovations or maintenance techniques you have introduced this year? Our working methodology is very well defined after years of experience in organising tournaments. We always look for a balance between competitive demands and respect for the course. Our aim is to find the ideal balance between challenge and playability.
We could go on and on about the bunkers. Although they were designed as obstacles to be avoided by the player, nowadays the opposite is true. Many players prefer to land in the bunkers rather than the dense rough, which is a result of the level of maintenance these areas are subjected to.
This year, like the DP World Tour and the PGA Tour, the LIV has brought in an external agronomy team, in this case from Royal & Ancient, with whom we work closely. One of their tasks is to ensure that parameters such as green speed, which is highly valued by both players and members of Valderrama, are kept within an acceptable range for competition.
Valderrama has almost 100 bunkers and their preparation is extremely laborious: redistribution of sand, compaction of slopes, homogenisation of depths, humidity control..... All this means many
We recently had our first visit, and they were surprised to find, using their own
measuring equipment, that the firmness, roll and speed of our greens exceeded those of other courses that have hosted LIV tournaments. These measuring tools, which were not available in golf until recently, allow us to make more objective and accurate decisions about course preparation. What specific challenges has Valderrama faced in preparing for an event like the LIV Golf League compared to other historic tournaments held here? From an agronomic point of view, the challenges are limited. We have been organising tournaments for decades and the team always gives 200% to make sure everything goes perfectly. If the weather is good, I have no doubt that the course will be in top condition. However, there is one aspect that is a huge challenge: the infrastructure that accompanies the LIV. We have never seen anything like this before, with the exception of the 1997 Ryder Cup. You have to bear in mind that construction starts in May, and we are still dismantling the course in August. This means that many areas of the course are deprived of light, water and nutrients for up to two and a

half months, which inevitably affects the turf. The main challenge is to return the course to its natural state as quickly as possible. The tournament is just one part of the calendar for a club that operates all year round for its members. Valderrama has a unique personality, characterised by natural elements such as the cork oaks. How does their presence affect the daily maintenance and preparation for a tournament like LIV Golf? (Laughs) There wouldn’t be enough space in Golf Circus to answer that question, but I’ll try. The cork oak grove is the course’s most valuable natural heritage. It is, however, extremely demanding to maintain. At any time of the year, the trees drop leaves, acorns or their characteristic yellow pollen, which means constant cleaning. On windy days, many branches and even whole trees can fall. They are also exposed to diseases and pests, which can defoliate a tree in a matter of days. Despite these challenges, the mortality rate in Valderrama is very low compared to the Alcornocales Natural Park. Most of those that fall are due to structural root
problems, not disease. The real challenge is the balance between trees and grass. As trees grow, they cast more shade, blocking the light needed for photosynthesis. Without light, the grass becomes diseased and dies. We have therefore developed a selective pruning plan using light and shade analysis software. Many players have compared the presentation of Valderrama to Augusta National. What does it mean to you and your team to hear this comparison and what key factors do you think bring the two courses closer together in terms of aesthetics and layout? To be called the ‘European Augusta’ is a huge compliment to the whole team. Even more so when you consider that Augusta National shuts down for months at a time with the sole purpose of preparing for the Masters. On the other hand, Valderrama is open 365 days, except for the week of the tournament and the two and a half weeks of intensive maintenance. The big difference is maintaining excellence all year round. That is what really makes Valderrama different. In addition, the mix of cool-season and
warm-season grasses makes the course look different depending on the time of year, which adds to the complexity of our work. Our aim is clear: to keep the course in tournament condition all year round. And that can only be achieved with hard work, discipline and a team that knows no relaxation. I always say that without pressure there is no success, and at Valderrama the word ‘relaxation’ is not in the dictionary. What feeling would you like LIV players to take away from Valderrama after playing here? We are happy to remain the highest rated course on the LIV Golf. In a recent conversation with Martin Kaymer, he told Javier Reviriego and me that Valderrama, along with Hong Kong, are considered the top courses, not only because of the state of maintenance, but also because of many other factors. This is a source of pride for us, but also an obligation. Maintaining this status is only possible with an exceptional and professional team who work with passion and dedication every day. This is the real secret of Valderrama.

ucked into the sundrenched hills of Mijas, La Cala Resort has been shaping the Costa del Sol landscape for over 35 years. What began as a vision by the forwardthinking FBD Hotels & Resorts group has evolved into one of southern Spain’s most dynamic destinations — a blend of world-class golf, relaxed Andalusian living, and a growing community drawn by its unique charm.
“While golf is still at the core of what we do, La Cala is so much more now. It’s a lifestyle, and it appeals to people of all ages from around the world. That’s what makes it special.” General Manager, Sean Corte-Real
Back in the day, the area was little more than untamed countryside. No roads, no infrastructure — just rolling terrain and big dreams. Fast forward to today, and La Cala is a lively resort that seamlessly combines leisure, lifestyle, and investment opportunities. With its award-winning spa, hotel, and three championship golf courses, it’s easy to see why so many visitors keep coming back — and why so many choose to stay for good. For the past two decades, La Cala’s real estate offering has been quietly impressive, with a mix of private villa plots and modern townhouses. Now, the resort is entering a new era of expansion with our latest developments experiencing unprecedented demand. Solana Village, La Cala’s largest project yet,

features 2- and 3-bedroom apartments, built around a future commercial centre that will include a café, gym, and minimarket amongst other services. Then there’s The Meadows, a collection of exclusive 3-bedroom townhouses with views across the Europa course — perfect for those who want golf and countryside views. As La Cala grows, so too does its commitment to community. A major infrastructure upgrade is underway, doubling parking availability and improving internal roads to make life easier for both residents and guests. But it’s not just about homes. Golf remains at the heart of La Cala. Sitting atop the resort, the newly reimagined
golf academy — soon to be known as The Golf Hub — is getting a major facelift. The short course is expanding to a 9-hole par 3 layout, and the driving range will feature covered bays and the latest in shot-tracing technology. Add in a revamped club fitting area and a relaxed lounge where players can unwind with sea views and a cold drink, and it’s clear: this will be more than a training ground, it will be an experience. This May brings even more flavour to the mix. The resort will launch two new dining concepts: El Patio, serving Mediterranean and local cuisine in the charming hotel courtyard, and The Steakhouse, a vibrant show-cooking venue at the Clubhouse. Add to that a series of new experiences — think traditional tuna carving, guided wine tastings, and relaxed Sunday roasts — and you’ve got a calendar full of reasons to return. One thing’s for sure: La Cala isn’t slowing down anytime soon. Whether you’re here for the golf, the views, the food, or the sense of community, this resort keeps finding fresh ways to surprise and delight. lacala.com •

Placed at the foot of Aracena and Picos de Aroche Mountains, Corta Atalaya Golf Club
is the oldest golf club in Spain. Its origin dates back to the end of the nineteenth century (1914) when English technicians were working in the Riotinto Mines and founded this golf club as North Lodge Golf Club. It was relocated in a new place in 1992 and from there the “corta” (mine) that gives its name to the course can be seen. One of the biggest attractions of this course is the colour display of the Corta of the Riotinto Mines with its reddish, copper and ochre colours. It is a 9-hole course with (3 par -3, 5 par -4 and 1 par -5). Half of the itinerary is quite even except for two quite steep fairways. Its soil fairways make this a unique golf course.

E
The right hand doesn’t know what the left is doing
I
t is usual that a Hotel Management Company GM do not understand the concept of resort, or multiuse resort asset to be precise. They can be good hotels GM, but very often do not understand the rest of business units. Therefore, lots of synergies, crosselling opportunities are lost in translation. Particularly tough to digest are the missing real estate opportunities because of these reasons. From both operational and S&M point of view it simple does not happen. And for the record, I am going far beyond the real estate sales tables in front of the hotel reception…100 actions should be taken. But the first, they need to know the residencial product, concept, location, numbers, etc And, by the way, also the other way round and this happens in almost every single business unit. They do not know in detail about each other. In simple terms, and as example, the hotel MUST be the main real estate sales channels of a mixed-use resort.
