Nestled just 35 minutes from the bustling city center of Phnom Penh, Cambodia, the Vattanac Golf Resort offers a genuinely unique and luxurious golfing experience.
Designed by golf legend Sir Nick Faldo, the resort boasts two contrasting 18hole courses: the East and the West. Each course presents challenges and is surrounded by breathtaking cultural replicas, making this golf resort a standout destination for golf enthusiasts.
One of the most distinctive features of their courses are the integration of Khmer
cultural heritage into the landscape. The East Course features scale models of iconic Khmer architectural sites, including Angkor Wat, Bayon Temple, and Preah Vihear Temple. These replicas, crafted on a 1:200 scale, add a touch of historical significance and provide a visually stunning backdrop for golfers.
The West Course, on the other hand, showcases statues and water features inspired by the great Khmer King Jayavarman VII and the Terrace of the Elephants. The course also features a unique “Dragon Lake,” adding an extra
layer of challenge as golfers navigate it. Both courses are designed to cater to golfers of all skill levels. The East Course, known for its strategic layout, utilizes dramatic water features, creative bunkering, and native fauna to challenge players. The West Course offers narrower and more undulating fairways, along with testing Paspalum greens, providing a rewarding skill test for golfers.
Sir Nick Faldo, a six-time major champion, designed both the East and West Courses and his expertise in course design ensures that each hole
offers a memorable and strategic golfing experience. The resort is managed by Troon Golf, a leader in upscale golf & hospitality management.
Vattanac Golf Resort stands out as a premier golfing destination in Cambodia, combining cultural heritage with worldclass golfing facilities. Robert Trent Jones Sr. spent the better part of 70 years building or renovating over 500 golf courses worldwide.
Today, his legacy is alive and vital in the hands of his son, Robert Trent Jones Jr., and the firm Robert Trent Jones II Golf Course Architects. Their concern for sustainability, technological innovation, and value for owners and players alike is the guiding light for a company carrying this legacy into the 21st century and beyond.
In a career spanning more than four decades, Robert Trent Jones, Jr. (Bob) and his team at RTJ II have designed more than 300 golf courses in over 50 countries on six continents. We caught up with Bob
to learn about his work, especially in Asia.
Among the 300 golf courses you have created, more than 30 have been across Asia. Why do you enjoy working in this region?
Our Asian courses are all different from each other but are very engaging. Working in Asia has allowed us to come up with a wide variety of designs, depending on the land on which they were built. The courses are as different as the countries themselves, and they are all engaging, each well worth the trip.
We’re especially proud that three of our courses in Asia have hosted World Cup Championships, including Pondok Indah Golf Course in Jakarta, Indonesia; Navatanee Golf Course in Bangkok, Thailand; and The Mines Resort & Golf Club in Selangor Darul Ehsan, Malaysia.
Do you find the challenges are different here compared to designing in the States?
Let me answer that with a memory. One day, when we were working on a course in Desaru, Malaysia, I walked across a log
that had fallen in a swamp, and a snake slithered away. When my guide took out his machete, I knew we were in trouble. I asked him, “What’s up?” He said, “It’s a Krait snake. If it bites you, smoke one cigarette and say goodbye.” Two weeks earlier, on the same site, a wild elephant pushed over our construction shack during the night. And we discovered that tigers had been coming out of the jungle to lick salt on the beach near our work. That was a difficult job. Our supervisors kept quitting. Every course presents challenges; these were especially memorable. But isn’t that the point? For me, adventure drives golf travel, getting you out of where you are and having a different experience. It’s all about going outside of your everyday life and becoming impassioned. Travelling to distant locations and playing golf in an alien context even though the game is familiar to you, the play will be different from anything you’ve experienced before.
In an era when global environmental concerns have taken centre stage and the golf business is greatly affected by resource issues, the importance of one specific resource stands out: Water. Have devised your own water guidelines?
Our philosophy holds that environmental sensitivity and responsibility are essential aspects of every golf course project. As you note, water use is one of the major environmental challenges facing golf designers today. Because water resources are often limited—especially in warm climates where many new developments occur—we focus special attention on techniques that conserve water. Our designs minimize the quantity of maintained turf while retaining the playability essential to an enjoyable first-rate golf course. We also utilize grass varieties and state-of-theart irrigation systems to maximize water conservation.
The pillar of our design philosophy is that every project is site-specific: Rather than attempting to impose a design style or signature look on a new golf course, we study each site to determine the most appropriate use of the existing landforms, plant palette, site orientation, climate, geology, and other forces that gave shape to the natural topography.
Asia alone, you have had 15 of the top ten courses as voted by readers of Asian Golf Monthly. Can you describe your top five favourite courses?
I can never pick one course over another: that’s like naming your favourite child.
However, golfers’ favourites include:
• Japan - Hakodate Onuma Prince Golf Course and Golden Valley Golf Club
• China - Kunming– Spring City Lake Course
• Vietnam - Hoiana Shores
One of your latest creations is Hoiana Shores in Danang, Vietnam. Was it fun to work on, and are you pleased with the result?
Hoiana Shores is our first design in Vietnam and the cornerstone of an ambitious 2,400-acre resort development. The course opened in 2020 and is more than equal to its surroundings. Every inch of turf was carefully laid atop a pristine natural environment stunningly highlighted by dunes, beach, native grasses, and steps away, the
Along with it being the most perfect canvas, with beautiful coastal terrain, we were given the ability to shape a design befitting this special region and magnificent new destination. Having a golf course in such close proximity to such a place as Hoi An makes this extra special.
We emphasized the naturalness of the terrain by incorporating “ribbon” tees that seamlessly become fairways. The concept of merging different areas of terrain extends to the unusually large greens, where many of the contour’s flow into the contours of the dunes, creating a feeling of naturalness most golfers have never experienced. Furthermore, by expanding and emphasizing the green complexes, players must get creative to get their shots to finish by the hole.
Even the holes themselves have a more natural feel, as they are marked not by flags but by red lanterns similar to the ones that famously light up the Old Town section of nearby Hoi An, the historic port city known as the “City of Lanterns.”
We hope players will find meaning in our courses — that they will discover the stories, motifs, and poetry we incorporate into each design. Our courses are of the earth, but they are for the spirit. I call it Alpha-Omega golf: Alpha on the tees; Omega on the greens. In between, you have life.
Danang, Hoi An, and Hue are connected to each other by new coastal roads and tunnels. Together they make up Vietnam’s Golf Coast. Vietnam’s recognition as an up-and-coming golf destination is no secret, but the Vietnam Golf Coast ups the ante even further.
Da Nang or Danang dated to the early 14th century when the area was settled small collection hamlets in central Vietnam. In 1954 with the division of Vietnam into the North and South, Danang became part of South Vietnam, and in 1965 was the location of the first landing of US forces in Vietnam and aptly coined “China Beach.” Nowadays, the area is home to one of Asia’s best beaches, many world-class resorts, and Vietnam’s best golf courses.
Closeby Danang is Hoi An, with its lovely wooden shop-homes, was set up in the 16th century. It was revived in the 20th century to commemorate the long history of Vietnamese international trade. Wandering through its protected old town is like being transported back to a time when Hoi An was Vietnam’s most important trading port. For those looking for a glimpse of the real Vietnam, or just for a fun night out, Hoi An mixes old world charm with modern and vibrant nightlife.
About 2 hours north from Da Nang is Hue which has gone through seven centuries of development. In 1802, Hue became Vietnam’s capital when the first King of the Nguyen dynasty, chose the location for the Imperial City. Hue remained Vietnam’s capital until 1945, when Bao Dai, the last of the Nguyen emperors, moved the Imperial City to its present
location in Hanoi. A major attraction is its vast, 19th-century Đại Nội Citadel, surrounded by a moat and thick stone walls. It encompasses the Imperial City, with palaces and shrines; the Forbidden Purple City (Tử cấm thành), once the emperor’s home; and a replica of the Royal Theater. Sleepy and provincial streets, magnificent natural beauty, and a unique food scene. And all of it gives off a feeling that is distinctly Hue.
Explore the Golden Bridge (Cầu Vàng) Located in the Ba Na Hills, this bridge is famous for being held up by two giant stone hands. It’s a fantastic spot for photos and also offers great views of the surrounding mountains.
Take a Cable Car Ride to Ba Na Hills. The Ba Na Hills cable car, one of the longest in the world, takes you up to the top where you can visit the Golden Bridge, explore the French Village, or enjoy the amusement park.
Experience the Night markets. Da Nang has several vibrant night markets where you can try local snacks, shop for souvenirs, and enjoy the bustling atmosphere. The Han Market and Con Market are particularly popular.
Vietnams Golf Coast is a term used for a group of top courses located close to Danang, a seaside resort in Central Vietnam
Over the past decade, the Vietnamese government has encouraged the development of golf resorts, and many leading developers have created first-class courses here. Because of its many marque designer courses, Danang has captured the imagination of many international golfers seeking a new experience, and it has now become one of the must-visit destinations for golfers who are travelling.
Here, Colin Montgomerie, Greg Norman, Jack Nicklaus, Luke Donald, Robert Trent Jones Jr., and Sir Nick Faldo have created incredible courses that challenge everyone.
A new international airport terminal, a slew of world-class hotels and resorts, and one of the ‘World’s Most Luxurious Beaches’ (according to Forbes) make Vietnam’s Central Coast a golf destination not to be missed.
The Central Coast has become Asia’s new golf hotspot, with many championship-calibre courses open and accepting players worldwide.
Here, we highlight some of the most exciting courses.
BA NA HILLS GOLF CLUB
Ba Na Hills Golf Club is 25 minutes inland from Danang, Vietnam, near the foothills of the cable car station leading to Bana Hills. The IMG managed Da Nang golf course is the first Luke Donald-designed course in Asia and the world. Ba Na Hills Golf Club has added to its impressive accolades, securing the title of Best Golf Course Asia 2024 in the golf category at the World Luxury Travel Awards.
The Ba Na Hills mountain course has a diverse mix of natural topography and vegetation and is laid out in several valleys of the surrounding mountain ranges... The holes at higher elevations have nice vantage points with spectacular views of the valleys below.
The site has a fair amount of elevation change and many natural features like large hardwood trees and streams that meander through several holes. At 7,858 yards in length, the par-72 golf course balances challenge and enjoyment for golfers of all skill levels.
The front nine holes form a traditional parkland course surrounded by pine forests. The back nine plays along and up-and-down the surrounding hills with many blind shots and doglegs. Needless to say, these holes are the more dramatic and challenging ones.
Bunkering at Ba Na Hills Danang is unique, with long grass around the edges and the face of each hazard. The sand is only partly visible from the tees and fairway approach shots. The greens are angled from the fairways and only slightly undulated. There is a good variety of pin positions and approach shots. All 18 holes are floodlit, which allows golfers who have a late start to finish their rounds.
Legend Da Nang Golf Resort (formerly Danang Golf Club) was created by Greg Norman in 2010. It is an 18-hole par 72 links-style courses (7,142yds) that immediately leapt to fame after being recognized by USA GOLF magazine as one of the 15 best new courses in the world.
Da Nang Golf Resort has achieved many awards, among them the 2011, 2012, and 2013 Best Golf Course in Asia by the readers of Asian Golf Monthly, the 2012 Best Golf Course in Vietnam by USA Golf Digest, and the 2014 IAGTO Diamond Award.
The Norman-designed Dunes Course uses the sandy loam soil of Danang Beach, a place with more history than golf. The Vietnam Golf Club is located directly on the beach that the Americans used for their first landing and adjacent to the American’s central supply depot and airfield used during the conflict of the 1960s.
Here on Vietnam’s central coast, one finds a seaside landscape almost identical to the land of the world’s first courses. The links-style golf experience was crafted as much by Mother Nature as it was by any golf architect.
Reminiscent of Scottish links golf and Australian sand-belt courses, Australia’s Great White Shark Norman has created something unique in Vietnam.
MONTGOMERIE LINKS
Montgomerie Links Vietnam was designed by Colin Montgomerie in 2008 and was one of the first to open its doors in the region.
Located just off historical Danang Beach and minutes from Danang City is this stunning 7090-yard par-72 golf course.
The course was rated as one of Asia’s ten most elite courses by the 2012 Forbes Travel Guide and was voted as ‘Vietnam’s Best Championship Course 2013’ by the Vietnam Golf Magazine. Since then, yearly awards have been standard for Montgomerie.
Nearby Hoi An, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has a fantastic beachscape, making the perfect palette for this links-style course. Locals know the Montgomerie Links Vietnam as “Monty” Links, which gives golfers the feeling of being in Ireland or Scotland without the cold temperatures of the British Isles!
The first golf course in central Vietnam takes advantage of its proximity to the Vietnam East Sea and the Marble Mountains, the latter of which is visible from many points.
LAGUNA LANG CO GOLF CLUB
Laguna Lang Co Golf Club is nestled in central Vietnam near Lang Co Bay and a pristine 3-kilometer beach, offers a par-71 course designed by Sir Nick Faldo. This is the second course he designed in Vietnam, and Nick loves to stay here as the course hosts the annual finals of the Faldo Series Asia.
With its ocean views, mountainous backdrop, and diverse terrain, including rice paddies and streams, each hole offers a unique challenge. Don’t miss the signature par-3 5th hole with its stunning green surroundings.
The 5-star resort features top-notch amenities including a pro shop, locker rooms, driving range, practice area, sports bar, and fine dining restaurant. Experience luxury at Laguna Lang Co with its Banyan Tree and Angsana resorts, spas, and villas.
HOIANA SHORES
Hoiana Shores is the first Robert Trent Jones Jr golf course in Vietnam. Forty-five minutes south of Danang International Airport and 8 kilometres south of the Hoi An Ancient Town UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hoiana Shores plays through dunes along the Vietnamese coastline. The town is known as “The City of Lanterns,” and fittingly, lanterns instead of flags top the pins at Hoiana.
The championship Hoiana course is a link design with limited vegetation and rolling dunes. Two returning nines on the coastal property are comprised entirely of pure sand. The course is grassed with TifEagle Bermuda greens, while tees and fairways feature Zeon Zoysia grass.
Course-building techniques preserved the existing dune and pine terrain, making holes play through
the Casuarina trees and brush native to the area. Other holes, especially the finishing ones, come up right along the sea and play inside the coastal dunes. The course plays firm and exhibits many ground game-playing characteristics found on a links layout in the British Isles but in a tropical setting.
The round at Hoiana Shores reaches a climax on the back nine. Located close to the shoreline, Holes 16, 16, and 17 are unique as the wind comes right off the sea and crosses the fairways and greens. The final hole plays back to the clubhouse and into the prevailing wind.
Hoiana Shores Golf Club is part of the larger Hoiana complex and integrated resort, which includes luxury hotels, entertainment outlets, residential communities, and retail complexes. The clubhouse and changing rooms are excellent, as is the steakhouse outlet in the clubhouse.
The golf experience is first-class, but the green fees are the steepest in the region, and tee times are limited. However, costs withstanding, Hoiana Shores Golf Club is a definite must-play.
YARDS
Located within the renowned Laguna Lăng Cô integrated resort, Laguna Golf Lăng Cô features an 18-hole, par-71 championship course designed by six-time Major winner Sir Nick Faldo. The award-winning course offers a challenging yet enjoyable experience for both seasoned golfers and beginners, with yardages ranging from nearly 7,100 yards for championship play to a more accessible 5,263 yards from the front tees.
Surrounded by stunning natural landscapes, golfers are able to immerse in the beauty of coastal sand dunes and traditional rice paddies with a backdrop of tropical mountains.

Where are you from originally?
I come from a small village called Longniddry, located about 16 miles outside Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital. This area, known as Scotland’s Golf Coast, is home to some remarkable links courses, including Muirfield, North Berwick, Gullane, Archerfield Links, and The Renaissance. Growing up surrounded by such an abundance of golf, I developed a deep
passion for the sport, which naturally led me to pursue a career in the golf industry.
What was your first job, and how did you get involved in the golf industry?
Growing up, I spent school summer holidays playing golf or caddying at my local course for many tourists visiting the area. I
secured my first full-time job as an Assistant Golf Professional at Kilspindie Golf Club and began my PGA studies.
You have managed several well-known golf clubs…please name them.
I’ve had the privilege of working at and managing some incredible golf clubs, including:
• Al Hamra Golf Club, in the UAE
• KN Golf Links, Vietnam
• Aquella Golf & Country Club, Thailand
• Pineapple Valley Golf Club in Thailand
• Ba Na Hills Golf Club in Vietnam
What are the main differences between managing a Thai golf club and a club in Vietnam?
I have been fortunate to work in diverse destinations, each with unique cultural nuances and challenges. Managing a Thai golf club versus one in Vietnam highlights fascinating contrasts. For instance, my second posting, at Pineapple Valley in Thailand, resembled a traditional members’ club with a strong emphasis on member-related events and social engagement. In contrast, Vietnam places less emphasis on member-centric activities, focusing more on playing within personal networks. Golf is deeply ingrained in Thai culture, having been part of the environment for many years, and is considered mainstream. While golf has existed in Vietnam for some time, it has only recently gained significant popularity, particularly among the younger generation.
You have now been in charge as General Manager at Ba Na Hills in Danang for several months. Describe the course and why you think it has won so many awards to date.
Ba Na Hills Golf Club is truly a gem. Designed by Luke Donald, the course features a breathtaking layout that meanders through the picturesque foothills of the Truong Son Mountains. Impeccably maintained, it has earned a stellar reputation as one of Vietnam’s best-presented golf facilities.
The layout offers a challenging yet enjoyable experience for players of all skill levels. Its captivating mix of holes showcases dramatic elevation changes that enhance the beauty of the scenic surroundings. Its accolades are a testament to its unique design, top-tier facilities, and unwavering commitment to delivering world-class service, ensuring unforgettable experiences for every golfer.
What is the club’s signature hole, and what makes it unique?
I like to think of every hole on the course as a signature, given the contrast in design and layout of each, but over the years, the scenic Par 3 16th hole has been considered to be Ba Na’s signature hole. This hole stands out due to its scenic view and challenging elevation change from the elevated tees to the island green.
Finally, what are your favourite golf courses have you played in Asia and abroad?
Some of my favourites, for various reasons, include Royal Dornoch and Muirfield in Scotland, as well as Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club in the UAE for the overall experience and enjoyment. In Asia, I’ve always enjoyed visiting Pineapple Valley over the years before I moved there to work, as it offers a fun and challenging design. I also absolutely love Alpine Golf & Sports Club just outside Bangkok, and KN Golf Links in Nha Trang will always hold a special place in my heart. But there are so many more courses I could mention.
Golf has a rich history in the Philippines, with roots dating back to the early 20th century when the country was under American colonial rule. American expatriates introduced the sport and quickly gained popularity among the local elite, establishing several prestigious golf clubs. Over the years, golf has become a significant part of the country’s sporting culture, reflecting its colonial past and modern aspirations.
The first golf course in the Philippines, Manila Golf Club, was established in 1901. The construction of other notable courses, such as the Wack Wack Golf and Country Club in 1930, soon followed this. These clubs have long been associated with exclusivity and prestige, often catering to the affluent and influential members of society. This exclusivity has also led to a perception that golf is a sport for the elite, potentially deterring broader participation.
The Philippines has not necessarily “lagged “ other Asian destinations for international golf vacations, but it may not be as widely recognized or popular as some other S.E. Asian golf destinations. One of the reasons international golfers might hesitate to explore golf courses across the Philippines is the prevalence of members-only clubs and the varying standards of courses outside major urban centers. Many high-quality golf courses are private and require membership or an invitation to play, limiting accessibility for casual or visiting golfers. Additionally, while there are excellent courses, some areas might lack the
same maintenance and facilities as in more established golfing destinations. However, with international golf vacationers craving to discover fresh challenges, the Philippines, especially the Clark area, is now on many of their bucket lists, with several major golf tour operators starting to add the Philippines to their itineraries.
The best time to visit Clark and other golfing regions in the Philippines is during the dry season, from November to April. During these months, the weather is generally pleasant and conducive to outdoor activities, including golf. The wet season can be unpredictable from May to October, with frequent rain showers that might disrupt golfing plans.
Once a bustling U.S. military base, Clark Freeport Zone has become a premier golfing destination. Its strategic location and significant investments in infrastructure have contributed to its burgeoning reputation. The newly upgraded Clark International Airport offers improved connectivity, making it more accessible for international and domestic travelers. Furthermore, the Subic-ClarkTarlac Expressway (SCTEX) provides a seamless travel experience from Manila, with the journey taking approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.
Beyond golf, Clark offers a plethora of attractions and amenities. Visitors can enjoy luxury accommodations, vibrant nightlife, and various leisure activities. The area boasts numerous hotels and resorts catering to different preferences and budgets. Additionally, Clark’s duty-free shopping centers, casinos, and cultural sites like the Clark Museum add to its appeal as a comprehensive travel destination.
Clark is home to several world-class golf courses, making it a prime destination for enthusiasts. Among the standout courses are:
MIMOSA PLUS GOLF COURSE:
Known for its lush fairways and challenging layout, it offers a picturesque and enjoyable golfing experience. Mimosa Plus Golf Course dates back to its existence in the time of the Americans in the Philippines. It’s already an iconic golf course with two
18-hole courses—the challenging Mountainview (a par-70) and the scenic Acacia Lakeview ( a par-72). Set against stunning foothill mountains and luscious greens of plants and trees, golf–minded individuals visiting Mimosa will be treated to spectacular scenery.
SUBIC INTERNATIONAL GOLF CLUB:
Surrounded by a rainforest untouched for thousands of years, Subic has a long history. Opened in the 60s as a U.S. military recreation facility, Subic International Golf Club took over this 18-hole golf course and reopened in 2018 to become one of the best courses in the country. Located a short drive from Clark, this course features stunning views and well-maintained greens, making it a favorite among golfers. The course offers a great round of golf, and it winds around the marshlands and up into the very refreshing hills of Binictican.
PADERA VERDE GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB:
This up-and-coming course designed by Robert Trent Jones JR combines beautiful landscapes with a challenging design, attracting both locals and tourists. This 18-hole Par 72, 7,314-yard course has meticulously manicured fairways, strategically placed bunkers, and picturesque water features. The club’s commitment to excellence extends beyond the course, providing top-tier amenities and services to ensure a memorable visit.
These courses were selected for their superior quality, accessibility, and the overall golfing experience they offer. Each course provides unique challenges and scenic beauty, enhancing the appeal of golfing in Clark.
When golfing in the Philippines, it’s essential to be mindful of local customs and practices. Caddies are commonly employed at golf courses, and it’s customary to tip them for their services. The standard tip is around PHP 400 - 600, depending on the quality of service provided. Additionally, security at golf courses is generally good, with many clubs implementing measures to ensure the safety and comfort of their guests.
The Philippines has made strides in promoting its golf tourism industry, and it continues to attract golfers who seek beautiful courses, natural landscapes, and a unique cultural experience.
Just recently the Asian Tour returned after an absence of ten years to host the Philippines Open at Manila’s Southwoods Golf and Country club. It was so successful that they have agreed to bring their prestigious International Series back to the country in October. Meanwhile Golfasian hosted the Philippines Golf Invitational including three top class courses in Clark.
You often hear the saying, “Championship course.” However in Hua Hin’s case, this is really true, as the Asian Tour and the European Tour often run tournaments here, and Hua Hin is also home to many professional golfers.
TO THE AREA
Hua Hin is just over two hours comfortable drive from Bangkok, located on the Western side of Thailand. With many excellent resorts, restaurants and beaches, this region makes it an ideal golf holiday destination for just about anyone.
Well known as a beautiful seaside resort and summer residence of the Royal family, Hua Hin was discovered in the early 1920s by King Rama VII and soon became a favourite of Thailand’s upper class.
Home to the country’s oldest golf course, the Royal Hua Hin Golf Club, Hua Hin and its neighbour Cha Am now have over a dozen championship and first-class courses, making it the ideal destination for a superb golf vacation.
All courses provide carts, rental equipment, and beautiful Thai Caddies, known for their ability to read the greens while delivering that famous Thai smile. Golf rounds here typically start from sunrise, with the mist covering the fairways to afternoon rounds ending in beautiful sunsets.
Hua Hin is one of the driest regions in Thailand, and the city receives little to no rain annually and is characterised by mostly bright sunny days. The peak season is from November to February. During the winter period, the weather is mostly a good mixture of cool and warm with less humidity. Then from March to May, during the offseason, expect a lot of humidity, while June to October, Hua Hin welcomes light showers in higher numbers.
Remember even after a short tropical downpour the courses have excellent drainage so play never stops for long.
The facilities on offer are first-class, with most clubhouses featuring men’s and women’s locker rooms, massage rooms, and Thai and European cuisine. During the high season, it is advisable to book your rounds in advance with your tour operator or hotel concierge, as the top courses are very busy.
Remember to put on high-factor sunscreen, as the Asian climate can be misleading even on a cloudy day. Your Thai Caddie will happily hold an umbrella to give you shade.
This region offers all kinds of golf experiences, from seaside to mountain courses, with coconut trees to even pineapples in the rough. We are sure you will enjoy wonderful golf in Hua Hin and Cha Am over the next twelve months.
Beach
Hua Hin has a long beach lined with a variety of private luxury beach houses, hotels, and 5-star resorts. The beach stretches some 7 kilometers from the hill in the south called Khao Takiap, where the famous temple Wat Khao Takiap is located. This is a beautiful, clean beach, and the sea is shallow and ideal for swimming. Watching the sunrise or catching the ultimate sunset while riding a horse is an amazing start to a day in paradise.
The best places to shop in Hua Hin range from local markets to boutique craft shops, and you can also shop for beachwear and summer accessories at many boutiques along the beach.
Check out Cicada Market’s art-inspired concept. It is the first of its kind around Hua Hin and is open Fridays to Sundays in the evening. Also, the Hua Hin night market is one of the best places for tasty street food and cheap cocktails. There are many stalls selling jewelry, crafts, Buddhist tokens, beachwear, and even funky lamps.
For more traditional shopping experiences, head to the Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, where you’ll find all the biggest name brands, as well as restaurants and entertainment venues. Market Village Hua Hin offers indoor and outdoor shopping, with more than 150 shops and restaurants and a theater to catch the latest big films.
Nightlife in Hua Hin features everything from sit-down meals with local craft beers to refined cocktail lounges, bustling night markets and plenty of bars and dance clubs.
Hua Hin Railroad Station was built during the reign of King Rama VI and opened in 1911. It is only a short distance from the centre of town and has recently been modernised. Black Mountain Water Park offers a fun-filled day for families and anyone needing a big splash. The park features nine different waterslides, a wave pool, a lazy river, a beach pool, a kids’ pool, and more. The magnificent Phraya Nakhon Cave is one of Thailand’s most mystical and mysterious landmarks, but only a few travellers can photograph it. It is located in the Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park in Prachuap Khiri Khan province, a 45-minute drive south of Hua Hin.
The Hua Hin Jazz Festival takes place in June and attracts renowned jazz musicians from Thailand and around the world. The Thailand International Kite Festival features hundreds of kites in all their colourful glory. It occurs in early March when steady southerly breezes blow throughout much of Thailand.
You are literally spoilt for choice as Hua Hin has many beachside, city centre and country retreats. Some of our favourites are the Centara Grand Beach Resort and Villas, Anantara Hua Hin, Avani+ Hua Hin, Amari Hua Hin, the Hilton Hua Hin and Movenpick Hua Hin. Ideal to book ahead as Hua Hin is also a popular destination for Thais.
You often hear the saying, “Championship course.” However in Hua Hin’s case, this is really true, as the Asian Tour and the European Tour often run tournaments here, and Hua Hin is also home to many professional golfers.
The Hua Hin and Cha Am golf areas are located on the western side of the Gulf of Thailand and are approximately a two and a half-hour drive from Bangkok. Thailand’s original beach resort now sports a selection of Hua Hin and Cha Am golf courses, available for play during your Thailand golf vacation.
There are currently eleven golf courses in the region, from beachside to mountain tracks, offering challenges for all levels of players, from low handicappers to beginners. Here, we have selected a few courses all close to Hua Hin to add to your bucket list.
Black Mountain Golf Club was transformed from lush jungle and pineapple plantations in 2007 and is located around 25 minutes west of Hua Hin. Set in a valley surrounded by huge black granite-covered mountains, this course was the site for Asian PGA tour events in 2009 and 2010,the Europe versus Asia match play Royal Trophy in 2011, The International Series in 2024, and the European versus Asian match play Royal Trophy in 2012. Each year, Golf Digest magazine selected it as one of the 100 best golf courses outside the USA.
Designed by renowned architect Phil Ryan, the 27-hole championship course at Black Mountain unfolds over undulating terrain, presenting golfers with a captivating and challenging journey. Towering hills, lush vegetation, and strategically placed water features complement the course, creating a picturesque backdrop that enhances the golfing ambience.
Built among a former pineapple plantation, Pineapple Valley Golf Club in Hua Hin opened in October 2008, and was awarded 2009 Best New Course in Asia-Pacific by the readers of Asian Golf Monthly. Since then, the club, clubhouse, and staff have consistently claimed ‘Top 3 in Asia’ awards and featured in the ‘Rolex Top 1000’ in the World.
Thailand golf course architect Pirapon Namatra from Golf East designed the world-class 18-hole championship golf course, which is known to be one of the most natural in the country.
The course offers spectacular mountain and ocean views from almost all holes and is one of the best layouts in Hua Hin. Each hole has six tee boxes, making the course more or less challenging depending on each golfer’s ability and tee selection. Strategically placed water hazards, waste bunkers, and sand traps are spread throughout the course.
Palm Hills is located in the lower foothills, close to the Hua Hin centre and the Hua Hin airport. It opened in 1992 and was the first international-standard Hua Hin golf course. The following year, Palm Hills hosted the inaugural Thailand World Pro-Am tournament.
The golf course is laid on a long strip of undulating terrain, giving the holes a Scottish ‘links’ feel, which is
different from all the other layouts in the area. The Max Wexler design goes from east to west, with lakes at each end, separated by the clubhouse and an interesting rocky outcrop extending from the mountain range.
The Palm Hills course is lined with hundreds of palm trees and has plenty of hillside lies, thus the name. Thousands of brightly coloured frangipani trees and bougainvillea shrubs add to the natural beauty. The back nine, which plays on top of the mountains, provides stunning views of the Gulf of Thailand and Hua Hin.
The traditional Jack Nicklaus-designed course, located off the Hua Hin bypass road, is a top local golf course and an excellent, cost-effective alternative to Pineapple Valley and Black Mountain.
Springfield has been designed to meet the high demands of a championship golf course, yet it remains an enjoyable challenge for golfers of all standards. Water hazards periodically come into play, and each hole presents its challenge and character, requiring shop-making finesse. Accuracy is needed as the rough comprises a series of hillocks and holes lined by a forest of mature trees.
The finishing par-5 18th signature hole needs a perfect shot to an island green. The green is reachable in two by longer hitters and those with an ego. Hit a good drive over the trees of the dogleg left, and then the green will be in sight for the second shot.
Springfield opened nine additional holes (Course C) for play in 2005, designed by the award-winning golf course architect Lee Schmidt. These nine contrast the Nicklaus 18 (Course A & B) and are even more challenging than the original 18.
Mountain Golf Club, Hua Hin, Thailand, has once again shown its mettle on the global golfing stage. In October 2024, the club proudly hosted the prestigious Black Mountain Championship, a high-profile International Series event on the Asian Tour. Marking another major achievement for the club, the Asian Tour Awards recently named the Black Mountain Championship event as “Asian Tour Tournament of the Year.”
This accolade reflects Black Mountain’s exceptional reputation as a premier championship venue, renowned not only in Asia but globally. The tournament saw worldclass players and passionate spectators come together at a venue that exemplifies excellence in every aspect. This award is a testament to the club’s dedication to not only providing the best possible championship golfing experience, but also maintaining near-championship conditions all year round and shaping a golfing environment that is second to none.
Black Mountain’s journey with the Asian Tour began in 2009 with the inaugural Black Mountain Masters. Over the years, the club has hosted eight marquee Asian Tour events, each one further cementing the venue’s position as a cornerstone of professional golf in the region. The longstanding collaboration with the Asian Tour is a reflection of mutual respect and a shared vision to elevate the sport of golf.
Black Mountain General Manager, Harald Elisson, expressed pride in receipt of the award, stating, “Hosting the Black Mountain Championship was a privilege, and to have the Asian Tour and its players vote our event ‘Tournament of the Year’ is real testament to the work and commitment that the Asian Tour, all of our collaborating partners, and the whole team here at Black Mountain put into creating and delivering an outstanding experience for players, spectators, and the entire golfing community. Our thanks go out to everyone involved who came together to make this happen.”
Harald Elisson added: “What I believe sets Black Mountain apart is the great attention to detail, which also extends to the extensive practice facilities including grass driving range, short game area and studios featuring the latest game improvement technology. The same course maintenance standards are applied throughout the year, ensuring that every golfer, professional or amateur, can enjoy a playing experience akin to that of the pros.”
This level of preparation and care was on full display during the Black Mountain Championship, where players and fans alike got to appreciate the quality of fairways & greens, the strategic course design and breathtaking surroundings.
While Black Mountain’s history of hosting elite tournaments underscores its prestige, the club’s doors are open to all. Being just two and a half hours from Bangkok, golfers from around the world come to experience championship golf at its finest, set against the backdrop of Hua Hin’s stunning landscapes. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or a casual enthusiast, Black Mountain offers an unforgettable experience that combines top-tier facilities with a warm welcome.
Beyond the greens, Black Mountain is a worldclass destination and one of Asia’s fastest growing residential golfing communities with much to offer. The resort boasts Private Pool Hotel Villa accommodation and an awardwinning water park, making it an ideal getaway for families and groups also.
Add to this the beautiful clubhouse restaurant overlooking the course, racquet sports complex and extensive child-friendly play area, both visitors and residents can immerse themselves in the ultimate golfing lifestyle while enjoying the finest in Thai hospitality.
The “Asian Tour Tournament of the Year” award is a celebration of excellence, which also comes with an invitation.
Whether you’re drawn by the challenge of championship golf or the allure of an exclusive resort experience, Black Mountain Golf Club promises you a visit where our goal is to exceed expectations.
Come and see for yourself why Black Mountain is not just a venue but a golfing destination that truly delivers The Ultimate Golfing Lifestyle Experience. For more information, email: info@bmghuahin.com or visit www.blackmountainhuahin.com

Cho Minn Thant is now the commissioner of the Asian Tour. He spoke to us recently at the Thai CC
You started working for the Asian Tour 16 years ago, and for the first few years, you handled the Tour’s Qualifying School. Yes, we went to Lakeview, Springfield, Majestic Creek, Sea Pine, and Palm Hills. In those days, we averaged 450 players. Moving forward this year, we have Q Schools in Australia, two in America and the rest in Thailand at Grand Prix GC, We are antic-
ipating over 700 players, almost double! Q schools for tours are quite a good revenue stream too.
It must be complicated with all the tours running Q Schools to decide where to play. We are in a good spot as all the other tours are ahead of ours, so guys who miss out on the Korn Ferry or DP World Tour will head for our Q School.
Do you think making a living on your Tour is more accessible now?
Definitely, in fact, the last-placed guy (60) on the money list used to be around US$70,000, and last year, the 60th guy earned US$145,000. This means the Asian Tour members are sharing in a lot more money, whereas before, a lot of that income was going to European Tour players in co-sanctioned events.
You seem to be slightly neutral in the tour golf wars. With rumours that Greg Norman may be stepping down with your CV, have
you considered taking that position?
I haven’t been approached, but I am very comfortable here on the Asian Tour and looking forward to the exciting times ahead.
Would you say, as commissioner, it is getting more manageable for you now?
Yes, compared with two years ago, when it was pretty turbulent, it seems to have quietened down a bit. We are definitely not going away, and LIV is not going away either. There is a lot more crossover in terms of our members playing Majors now and our members playing the European Tour to some extent. Everyone has learnt to live together, even though we are not best friends.
This year, your first event was in the Philippines. How did you go about selecting Southwood’s Jack Nicklaus course?
It was a collaboration between us, The National Golf Association of the Philippines, and the course. We have organized the Philippine Open there in the past.
It is amazing that with 111 courses, the Philippines has not been on the radar. Vacationers are always on the lookout for new destinations.
Have you considered taking your senior events and even the International Series to other Asian countries?
We started returning to Cambodia with an ADT event at Angkor Golf Club plus several ADT events in Vietnam, so there are promising signs that the Asian Tour will return there soon. There are 3 or 4 excellent golf courses in Danang, and we went to the Bluffs at Ho Tram some time ago plus the International Series went last year to The KN Golf Links. So, Cambodia and Vietnam are high on the list, and returning to the Philippines is great. We don’t have to limit ourselves to just one event in each country.
You travel constantly, but where do you live these days?
I travel in a suitcase, in an airport lounge, and in a hotel somewhere in the world. My wife and my 3-year-old daughter get to use a lot of my air miles. I try to spend two to three months in America each year, and technically, Singapore is home and our HQ, although I do spend quite a lot of time at Black Mountain in Hua Hin.
Finally, who did you look up to when you joined the Tour?
I was brought into the Tour by the Former Commissioner of Asian Tour, Kyi Hla Han, who looked out for me almost all my career until he sadly passed away two years ago. He was the biggest influence on my career.
By Paul Myers
Thailand and Vietnam are still the heavyweights, attracting the lion’s share of foreign golfers. However, Cambodia, wedged between the two golf tourism powerhouses, is catching up fast, with ten courses open and more on the way.
While the number of elite courses remains low, Fabrice Ho, the affable general manager of Chhun On Golf Resort, a relatedly new addition to Phnom Penh and a long-time golf executive in Cambodia, believes the Khmer nation’s time has come to be counted among the best golf experiences in Asia.
If the Brian Curley-designed Lake Course and the upcoming Palms Course at Chhun On are his validation, it’s hard to disagree. The ongoing development, set to fully open in mid-2025 with no expense or attention to detail spared, is as appealing as the best 36-hole public-access complexes in Asia.
Chhun On was built on flat land enhanced by artificial undulations and ample, but not excessive, water. The Lake course’s greens are large, with most more than 10,000 square feet! The Lake also has an island-green 19th hole depicting the map of Cambodia. A solar-powered boat can access it and add it to a round if desired; plus, there are lights for night golf on nine holes.
Only 40 minutes by car from downtown Phnom Penh, Chhun On has aspirations to become an Asian tournament venue. Fabrice Ho is confident that Cambodia will soon become a single destination of choice for foreign golfers rather than an add-on to Thailand and Vietnam. www.chhunon-golfresort.com

Chee Chan Golf Club, located in Na Jomtien outside Pattaya, is highly praised for its beautiful 18-hole Par 72 championship course.
Chee-Chan-Golf-Resort-Hole 14 from behind green
The course, designed in 2019 by David Dale from Golf Plan Dale & Ramsey Golf Course Architects, stretches 7,345 yards from the Championship tees and offers stunning views of Khao Chee Chan, temples, and mountains.
It’s designed to cater to golfers of all skill levels, featuring sweeping fairways, intricate bunkers, and well-maintained greens. The fairways and tee boxes are planted with Zoysia grass, while the greens are surfaced with Tifeagle Bermuda grass, providing excellent putting conditions.
Many holes feature dramatic elevation changes and stunning views of the surrounding landscape. There are long uphill par-4s and holes with intricate bunker complexes. The signature hole, the par-3 17th, is a memorable experience with its island green and breathtaking backdrop.
The course is also known for its iconic backdrops, including the Buddha Mountain, which adds to the overall experience.
Visitors often highlight the friendly and helpful staff, the well-kept facilities, and the delicious food and drink options available at the club. Check out their pro shop for some great unique polo shirts and accessories.
Chee Chan has an international feel, with 5-star service levels rivaling the best in Asia.
If you’re a golf enthusiast planning a trip to Malaysia, the Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club (KLGCC) should be on your must-play list.
KLGCC has a rich history of hosting prestigious tournaments, including the LPGA Maybank Malaysian Championship and the PGA’s CIMB Classic. Playing on the same courses as some of the world’s greatest golfers adds to the allure and prestige of a round at KLGCC.
KLGCC features two exceptional 18-hole championship courses: the East Course (Par 71) and the West Course (Par 72). Each course offers unique challenges and breathtaking views. The West Course’s open layout offers a blend of risk and reward, with long, demanding holes and strategically placed water hazards. The East Course, a parkland-style layout, challenges players with its strategic bunkering and undulating greens.
West Course: Often hailed as the crown jewel, it is recognized as Malaysia’s Best Golf Course by the World Golf Awards 2022. Keep an eye out for Hole 5, a par-3 with a daunting island green that’s as beautiful as it is nerve-wracking. And then there’s Hole 17, a par-4 known as “The Tiger Hole” because it’s rumored even Tiger took a mulligan here. The 18th on the West Course, a dogleg right with a water hazard guarding the green, provides a dramatic finish to your round.
East Course: Equally captivating, the East Course provides a diverse golfing experience. Don’t miss Hole 9, a long par-5 with water hazards and magnetic pull-on golf balls. The views are worth the risk unless you’re allergic to retrieving your ball from the water. The par-3 13th, with its elevated tee and island green, is a must-play also.
Ranked among the top courses globally, KLGCC has earned a spot in the Club Leaders Forum’s ‘Top 50 Platinum Golf & Country Clubs of the World 2022-2023 and accolades for being a premier tourism destination. This reputation ensures you’re playing at a course celebrated by golfers worldwide.

Enjoy a meal at the Golfer’s Terrace after your round, or have your non-golfing partner relax with a spa treatment while you are on the links. The driving range even has targets that light up. Think of it as a golfing disco.
Conclusion: Reserve your tee times in advance through a reputable (not online) agent, especially during peak seasons. Playing at KLGCC means joining an elite group of golf enthusiasts who appreciate top-tier courses and exceptional service. It’s not just about the game but the entire experience. Add this prestigious club to your itinerary for an unforgettable golfing adventure in Malaysia.

Planning a golf vacation in Asia is an exciting endeavor. From the lush fairways of Thailand to the breathtaking courses in Vietnam, here’s a detailed guide to ensure you’re ready for the adventure of a lifetime.
SUNSCREEN AND HATS.
The tropical sun in Asia is relentless. A high-SPF sunscreen is a must – think SPF 50+ because looking like a lobster isn’t a good look on anyone. And don’t forget a stylish wide-brimmed hat or a cap to keep the sun off your face and neck. You don’t want to end up with a golf ball-shaped tan line.
HIRING GOLF CLUBS.
Why wrestle with your golf bag through multiple airports? Most luxury Asian golf tour operators and quality courses offer top-quality club rentals. Imagine breezing through the airport with your carry-on while others are lugging around their oversized bags. Your back will thank you also!
UMBRELLA.
Even during the dry season, tropical rain showers can appear out of nowhere. However, don’t stop there. Act as a local and use your umbrella to keep the sun off your body. A good golf umbrella is your best friend – it doubles as a sunshade and a rain protector.
GOLF LESSONS.
Brush up on your skills with lessons from local pros before your trip. Not only will you learn new techniques, but you’ll also get insider tips on playing on vacation. Just think of it as a sneak peek into the secret sauce of the pros. They always have a lesson before a big event, as should you.
TICKETS AND TRAVEL DOCUMENTS.
Double-check that you have your passport, flight tickets, and vouchers from your operator. Pro tip: take photos of these documents and store them on your phone – because there’s nothing worse than realizing you left them in your desk
drawer or hotel safe. Some Asian countries require visas. Make sure to check visa requirements well in advance. For instance, Vietnam and Cambodia typically require visas, while Thailand offers visa-free entry to many nationalities.
Learn the local currency and exchange rates. Change money at the airport on arrival and carry some local cash for small expenses and tips for your caddies generously – they often know the course better than your GPS. Also, notify your bank about travel plans to avoid embarrassing card declines.
Clothing: Pack lightweight, breathable golf attire. Think moisture-wicking polo shirts and shorts that let you move freely. Fenix is a good brand and can be found at most pro shops. Footwear: Bring comfortable golf shoes. Remember, blisters are a golfer’s worst nightmare. Quality
sunglasses to protect your eyes and an ample supply of your favorite golf balls are always advisable to pack. Mineral water is available every three holes, so there is no need to carry a separate water bottle to stay hydrated on the course.
Vaccinations: Check if you need any vaccinations. Better safe than sorry! Insurance: Get travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, cancellations, and lost baggage. You never know when your bags will decide to take their own vacation.
Respect: Be mindful of local customs. Remember, patience and a smile go a long way. Touching the heads of others is frowned upon. Language: Learn a few basic phrases in the local language. A simple “thank you” (Khap Khun Krap in Thai) or “hello” (Xin Chào in Vietnamese) can earn extra brownie points and will bring extra smiles to locals you meet along the way.
By following these tips, you’ll be ready to enjoy the perfect blend of golf and adventure in Asia!

Southeast Asia is a very vibrant region with diverse climates and stunning landscapes. It has some seasonal variations, so here’s a general overview of the best times to visit each country:
Thailand experiences three main seasons: dry, hot, and rainy. The best time to visit is from November to March when the weather is cool and dry. The hot season runs from April to June, and the rainy season is September and October. It is great to golf in July and August when its generally overcast and the fairways and greens lush and not crowded. Golfing then is also the least expensive time of year in Thailand.
Vietnam’s weather varies significantly from north to south. The best time to golf in northern Vietnam is from October to April when the weather is cooler and drier. However, it’s often foggy with cool overnight temperatures. Central Vietnam is best visited from February to August,
while southern Vietnam is ideal from November to April. The hot and rainy season from May to August is best avoided, especially in the North and South. The coastal areas around Danang are OK, as there are year-round ocean breezes.
The Philippines has a tropical climate with two main seasons: dry and wet. The best time to golf in the Philippines is from December to May when the weather is dry and sunny. The wet season runs from June to November, and the later in the year, the more likely golfers will encounter strong typhoons.
Cambodia’s dry season runs from November to April, making it the best time to golf. The rainy season from May to October brings heavy downpours, but it’s also a time when the landscape is lush and green. Golf can be played year-round, though it is best to avoid April-May when temperatures soar to 40 degrees Centigrade.
Malaysia has a tropical climate with a dry season from April to September and a wet season from October to March. However, this is only an approximation. Rain falls every afternoon daily and year-round. The best time to golf is in the mornings when the heat and dark clouds have yet to build up.
Bali is south of the equator, and the dryer season and cooler temperatures are from April to October, making it the best time to golf. The rainy season from November to March brings heavy rainfall, but it’s also when the island is less crowded and prices lower. Both periods appeal to golfers.
Conclusion: Each Southeast Asian country offers unique experiences, and the best time to golf depends on your preferences and priorities. Whether looking for green fairways, sunny beaches, cultural exploration, or lush landscapes, there’s always a perfect time to golf in this beautiful region. Remember that most Asian golf courses are designed to cope with a sudden tropical downpour, and with excellent drainage, you can be back on the fairways within 20 minutes.

Tattoo Festival at Wat Bang Phra, Thailand. Held during the first weekend in March at Wat Bang Phra (Temple of the Flying Tiger), Thailand’s famous tattoo festival is a must for anyone interested in sak yant tattoos. The night before the festival, thousands of people travel to the temple to get a ‘one-of-a-kind’ tattoo engraved onto their bodies by a monk.
The cherry blossoms, or Sakura, are all the rage in Tokyo , Japan. You can take in the pink blossoms in parks across the city and further afield. The best time to view them is between late March and early April.
Also known as the Songkran Festival, is the Thai New Year’s national holiday. It is celebrated on 13 April every year, but the holiday period extends from 14 to 15 April and lasts ten days in Pattaya.
After the hottest period in Laos, the celebrations welcome in the New Year and mark the beginning of the monsoon season. Like in Thailand, water plays a major role as a symbol of ‘cleansing’ as homes, Buddha images, and people are blessed. Like all New Year festivals, the emphasis is on having fun and getting wet! (All for good luck, of course!)
Issan, Thailand, and Laos. This fun and noisy festival is held at the beginning of May to mark the beginning of the rainy season. Since ancient times, it’s been performed by those working on the land to request rain from the ‘Phaya Thaen’ (Rain God). Villages across the country gather to create huge bamboo rockets and then shoot them up into the skies. The winner of the highest rocket gets prestige throughout the land.
A three-day event celebrated across the country at the same time as the Thai Songkran. As in Thailand, ‘water blessings’ occur as Cambodians sprinkle holy water on each other’s faces in the morning, the chest at noon and the feet in the evening. Soakings are also common!
During September, Chinese people believed that the ghosts of their ancestors had descended to earth to search for food. Although you may not actually bump into one of the actual ghosts, you will encounter the festival alive and well in Chinese communities all across Southeast Asia, from Phuket in Thailand to Penang in Malaysia.
In the sun-drenched landscapes of Southeast Asia, an organization that had captivated the hearts of golf enthusiasts near and far thrived—Golfasian.
Known for their world-class golf experiences, Golfasian have created a platform for amateurs to enter the fairways and embrace the thrill of competition with their popular tournaments in Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines. Over 2,000 entered their events in 2024.
One such amateur, a woman named Ann, found herself drawn to the allure of these amateur golf tournaments. Ann had always
loved golf, but her busy life as a doctor had left little time for the sport. When she stumbled upon Golfasian’s offerings, she knew this was her chance to reignite her passion.
Ann signed up for her first tournament, feeling excited. She arrived at the stunning course in Thailand, surrounded by emerald greens and the serene sounds of nature. As she joined her fellow participants, they greeted her with warm smiles and
encouraging words. It didn’t matter that they were amateurs; what mattered was their shared love for the game.
Throughout the tournament, Ann discovered that these events perfectly blended competition and camaraderie. She played alongside golfers from different countries, each with unique stories and backgrounds. They shared tips, laughed over missed shots, and celebrated each other’s successes. The tournament wasn’t just about winning but the joy of playing, and the friendships forged along the way.
As Ann navigated the course, she marveled at the professionallevel organization and attention to detail, from the beautifully maintained greens to the smiling caddies, who even had her name embossed on their bibs. She felt just like a professional on the main tours!
The tournament’s highlight was the closing ceremony, where participants gathered to celebrate their achievements. Ann didn’t win the top prize, but she left with something far more valuable—an unforgettable experience, newfound friends, and a renewed love for golf. She realized that playing in these amateur tournaments wasn’t just about the game but about being part of a global community that cherished the spirit of golf.
From that day forward, Ann became a regular participant in these tournaments. She travelled to new destinations, discovered
breathtaking courses, and continued to grow as a golfer. She has also met and made many new friends from all over the world.
So, Golfasian’ amateur golf tournaments continue to inspire and unite golfers from all walks of life, reminding everyone that the true essence of the game lay not in perfection but in the passion, camaraderie, and unforgettable memories created on the greens. From humble beginnings in Bangkok, Thailand, Fenix XCell has grown into a global brand that is proudly showcasing its products on the international stage.
In 2008, Michael Moir from Aberdeen, Scotland, arrived in Bangkok, Thailand, unsure of his next chapter. An avid golfer, he joined local tournaments and corporate golf days to stay sharp and network. While he enjoyed the courses and camaraderie, he noticed a common issue—the polo shirts provided were poorly made and stifling in Thailand’s sweltering heat. Seeing an opportunity, Michael sourced a local factory to produce lightweight, breathable polo shirts for corporate golf events. The improved quality was a hit, sparking the creation of Fenix XCell
Fast forward, and this hard-working Scot now heads up one of the world’s leading golf apparel companies. He split the company into two divisions: Fenix Custom, specializing in bespoke performance apparel for corporate needs, and Fenix XCell, a retail brand for everyday consumers with aspirations in golf apparel. The golf apparel market was competitive and dominated by big-name brands. However, Michael saw an opportunity in Asia’s preference for bold, colourful
designs. Fenix XCell gained recognition for its stylish, eye-catching looks, particularly its signature “Camo” designs. Today, after years of solidifying themselves in the industry, Fenix XCell apparel is not only worn by professional golfers worldwide, but they also provide the merchandise and clothing for the biggest events in the golf world such as the Porsche Singapore Classic and a host of International Series events on the Asian Tour Schedule.
Their clients trust them to showcase their brand or team identity with unmatched customization options, quick leads times and low Minimum Order Quantities providing a service that sets us apart from the rest.
Australian pro Scott Hend became Fenix XCell’s first global brand ambassador, embodying the brand’s bold style and outgoing personality. Competing worldwide, Hend has achieved 10 Asian Tour wins and three European Tour victories, earning a reputation for his relentless winning streak.
Paul Lawrie, one of Scotland’s most celebrated sportsmen for his 1999 Open Championship win on home soil, has been an integral ambassador for Fenix XCell and continues representing our brand on the EU Legends Tour.
In 2017, the company embraced our Thai roots by signing Kiradech Aphibarnrat, Thailand’s top-ranked golfer. During this time, he reached a career-high World Ranking of 29 in 2019.
In 2024, he competed at the Paris Olympics, representing Thailand.
Prom Meesawat, fondly known as the ‘Big Dolphin” and a two-time winner on the Asian tour is another of our first Thai ambassadors, and Team Fenix has been growing solidly in Thailand over the past few years with Pro players like Bank Varanyu, Tyy Suteepat, Sarut Vongchaisit and Matt Killen representing our brand on the Asian Tour, Mike Moir has had to contend with cash flow issues, the COVID-19 pandemic, and constantly competing with the big boys. Fenix XCell is now one of those big boys, and Mike is well-connected and respected in the golf industry worldwide.

Last year Golfasian handled over 21,000 golf vacations covering six countries across SE Asia. Here are some genuine comments from Golfasian’s band of international traveler’s.
Siam Country Club, Bangkok. Star: 5. New course located near the Nissan factory, on a flat layout but well-designed. Perfect condition of the fairways and greens, in fact my favorite greens of the trip – quite fast Caddies were excellent. And very knowledgeable for putting plus super friendly.
Black Mountain Golf Club.Star: 5 : One of the best courses in Thailand in great condition (nice recovery from the bad summer drought) Knowledgeable caddies and very professional Clubhouse and huge golf shop. Easy access from Hua Hin ,less than 20min from downtown
MR. RICHARD FILBY
I find golf more enjoyable when I play with others. As a single player, sometimes it was difficult to join other golfers at the course. I found a solution to this by basically recruiting a playing caddie to accompany me. I covered the cost of her green fees and had a playing partner for those rounds. Editor’s note: Why not enter one of our golf tournaments…you are sure to meet many other single golfers there.!
Darren started the process for us on the right foot. Inserting a rest day after three rounds, was in hindsight an excellent suggestion, followed by two more golf days. And golfing on our departure day (11:45 pm departure time) to avoid a long wait at the airport was another excellent suggestion. Our driver in Hua Hin was excellent, cold water was always stocked and ready to go. Stayed at the Maven Stylish Hotel Hua Hin. Breakfast options were good and varied day to day. Centrally located, walking distance to many attractions. What more does a golfer need?
It was wonderful that we are able to work in partnership with Golfasian to design the holiday that best suits our needs and budget. We enjoyed the mix of golf and our private tours of each city and had two wonderful drivers, who both went out of their ways to look after us. The courses and caddies were wonderful, and I can see that in years to come Cambodia will become a major golfing destination.
Tee times was booked mostly as we wished. Driver was always on time at pick up and was waiting. So whatever time we want to return to our hotel right after golf or after enjoying lunch in the clubhouse he was waiting.
We know that you may have enjoyed a few golf vacations in Asia before and told all your mates back at your local golf club what an amazing time you had…. I bet a few were quite envious!
