Here’s to new courses, new adventures, and unforgettable rounds.

Faldo

Loves to Create Great Courses in Asia.

Sir Nick Faldo, or simply Faldo as he is known, is etched in history as one of the legends of golf, a well-known broadcaster, and, in his twilight years, a highly creative golf course designer. As much of his best work has been on some incredible projects across Asia, who better to talk to and share his take on this dynamic region? Here are his exclusive comments.

FOND OF THIS REGION

The majority of my completed design work has been in Asia, so I have a strong affinity for the region. Asia is a diverse region with varied weather, site conditions, and unique golf cultures in each country. One of the main differences in designing golf courses in the ASEAN region compared to other parts of Asia or the world, is the need to consider drainage issues given the large amount of rainfall experienced in these tropical and subtropical climates. Rainy seasons must also be considered when mapping out the construction plan, as it typically takes a minimum of two dry seasons to complete the construction of 18 holes.

SO, WHAT EXACTLY MAKES THE PERFECT 18 HOLES?

What I love about all my favourite golf courses, and what I strive to bring to my Faldo Design projects, is the seamless flow of the golf experience, from the practice facilities to the first tee, to the 18th green, and even the walks (or rides) from greens to tees. Inspiring views on the horizon, whether of trees or hills, are also very important throughout a golf course. If the strategy and difficulty match the contours of the land, then this leads to memorability. If you've played a golf course for the first time and can easily remember all of the holes you played while having a beer afterwards, that might not be achieving perfection, but it would be a golf course that most golfers would want to play over and over.

TECHNOLOGY HAS CERTAINLY EVOLVED

Sustainability is one of the key pillars of Faldo Design, and it is something

we incorporate into all our designs. Technology has evolved significantly in the golf industry over the years, not only in the development of new grass types suitable for high temperatures and abundant rainfall in Southeast Asia, but also in irrigation systems, golf course maintenance equipment, and agronomic techniques to ensure that golf courses are constructed and maintained in a sustainable manner.

MY FAVORITE ASIAN COURSES

I have now designed several courses in Southeast Asia, including Laguna Lang Co., which features a fantastic golf course, and Banyan Tree Resort in Hue, Vietnam. Additionally, I have worked on Vattanac Golf Resort, a 36-hole course located near Phnom Penh, and Angkor Golf Resort in Siem Reap, Cambodia. I have also recently completed and opened three projects in Vietnam, including Silk Path Dong Trieu Golf & CC in Quang Ninh Province, Thanh Lanh GC in Vinh Phu Province, both near Hanoi, as well as Royal Long An Golf with 27 holes near Ho Chi Minh City. I am also finalising concepts for the renovation of the East Course at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club. Faldo Design has other exciting projects currently under construction in Laos, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia, so there's lots to look forward to in the near future!

We hope you will have the opportunity to experience some of Sir Nick's magic yourself when booking your Asian golf vacation.

THAILAND

Thailand is considered a top golf destination and is often called the "Golf Capital of Asia".

Thailand remains hugely popular with golfers, and it is not hard to see why. More than any other country in Southeast Asia, it manages to fuse the deep exoticism of the Orient with first-world comforts to create an everappealing package.

The Royal and Ancient game has come a long way since its introduction to Thailand over a century ago during the reign of King Rama V.

There are now thought to be over 265 courses in the Kingdom, making it the region's undisputed heavyweight for golf tourism. Thailand boasts a variety of highquality golf courses offering great value and warm and welcoming hospitality.

Challenges include some of the most feted resort and tournament courses in Asia (The LPGA and Asia Tour regularly organise major tournaments here), with the fluidity of the golf scene, meaning that established favourites are regularly complemented with exciting fresh blood.

From the mist-shrouded mountains of the north to the paradise beach resorts of the south, high-calibre golf can be played in any number of enticing environments. With beautiful landscapes, fantastic food and friendly people sprinkled liberally throughout the country, the "land of smiles" continues to capture the hearts of visitors.

Most travellers kick off their Thai adventure in the country's capital, Bangkok. This exhilarating place is where tradition and modernity collide—and the outskirts are liberally peppered with excellent golf layouts that offer magnificent play and on-point facilities off-course.

Away from the big city, Thailand supplies the whole spectrum of travel and golf experiences. Although it is Thailand's second city, Chiang Mai couldn't be further removed from Bangkok. Nestled in the foothills of northern Thailand, it's a peaceful portal to some of the country's most magical landscapes and golfing tests that make the most of this scenic manna.

Indeed, beauty is a common thread throughout the Kingdom's golfing offerings whether it be in the coastal cities of Hua Hin and Pattaya – where world-class tests offer superstar allure – or on Phuket and Koh Samui, island paradises studded with beaches, upscale resorts or the beauty of Khao Yai" s national park. Mixing golf with nature

In 2024 over 700,000 tourists flew into Thailand annually to play golf.

DID YOU KNOW?

There's no disputing that golf has been around in Thailand for quite some time. The identity of the country's first golf course was the Royal Hua Hin, which was inaugurated in 1924, is often cited as the granddaddy of Thai golf layouts. Certainly, it was the first 18-hole, international standard course. It was even designed by a Scot, giving it an added stamp of authenticity. The oldest golf option though is believed to be the nine holes at the Chiang Mai Gymkhana Golf and Sports Club, which dates back to 1898.

IN_HOME_MODE ESTABLISHED: 1996

SOCIAL_DISTANCE DISTANCE: 75 minutes from Bangkok center WEB_TRAFFIC WEBSITE: www.alpinegolfclub.com/

Alpine Golf & Sports Club is one of Thailand's top-rated courses and one of the best in Asia. The layout created by America's leading golf course architects, Ronald Garl, was the venue for the 2000 Johnnie Walker Classic PGA tournament won by Tiger Woods and again hosted the same event in 2004. The 18 holes here make up Bangkok's best layout and most challenging golf course. In addition to the superb hole routing, this member's only golf club's maintenance is of the highest standards and features lightning-fast greens and undulating fairways. The changing elevations, more characteristic of golf courses in Hua Hin or Phuket than in Bangkok add to the challenges. In addition, water is also much in evidence, along with beach-style bunkers, which most notably protect the front of the par-3 3rd and 12th holes. Alpine is not a Bangkok golf course for the faint-hearted.

BANGKOK GOLF CLUB

SOCIAL_DISTANCE DISTANCE: 35 minutes from downtown Bangkok

Bangkok Golf Club is located only 35 minutes from the center of town, and the club was the site for numerous professional events including the Asian Tour's Volvo Masters in 2003. The golf course succumbed to massive flooding in 2011 which required all greens to be re-built and many of the older tees to be cut down. As a result, a friendlier course re-emerged in 2012. Nowadays the golf course is managed by the MBK Group who own several courses including the adjacent Riverdale GC, and conditions are top-notch. Best of all here are the superb quality greens which are fast and undulating. Thankfully, the caddies are well versed in reading the many slopes and borrows. The clubhouse offers traditional Thai massage, and a choice of international and Japanese restaurants.

Hanse, renowned for his US Open renovations, has paid homage to the legendary New York City Lido Golf Club with this vintage-style gem. Nothing but pure links golf is on offer. The site sits 40 minutes from downtown Bangkok and 25 minutes from the Suvarnabhumi International Airport.

Situated in the stunning natures cape of Nakhon Pathom, a mere hour’s drive West of downtown Bangkok, the delightful Nikanti Golf Club offers Thailand’s most unique and memorable golf and leisure experience. This gem of a course is unlike any other in Thailand. Instead of the usual emphasis on par-4s, the distinctive ‘666’ set-up makes room for an equal number of par-4s, par 5s and par-3s. The narrow, snaking par five opening hole sets an exacting tone. Other highlights include the 13th, a long hole that plays to a green at the edge of a lake and the 16th, an uphill par-3 where the tee is located in a giant waste bunker that extends to the front of the putting surface. Their clubhouse offers a 5-star service, including a delicious Thai and international all-day buffet at their Kan restaurant. A very unique golfing day out!

SIAM COUNTRY CLUB BANGKOK

Siam Country Club Bangkok is the 5th edition of the prestigious Siam Country Club. This Toby Cobb-designed championship 18-hole layout plays 7,250 yards and utilizes Zoysia grass for fairways and ultra-dwarf Bermuda grass for greens. This Bangkok golf course is distinct from many in the nearby area. A good description is a hybrid course - a sparsely treed parkland course on a links site. Fairways are generously wide with a gentle rolling slope. At the same time, elevated and super-large greens feature catchment areas and nice bunker complexes—effective use of native red grass and mounding frame many holes. The 4,400 sqm modern clubhouse resembles other Siam Country Club Pattaya facilities. All are well-appointed and have first-class changing rooms, a well-stocked pro shop, and an excellent restaurant specializing in Japanese cuisine.

The design by Jonathan Morrow and Al Tikkanen, known for their work on Red Mountain in Phuket, showcases intelligent routing and elevation changes. Although it may initially seem unassuming, the course’s true challenges are very cleverly hidden. The landscape includes several large lakes dredged to create the hills surrounding the golf course and frame most of the holes. The course has matured with rolling fairways, reed-lined lakes, raised greens, and strategic bunkering, creating a visually stunning and demanding experience. Enjoy cool refreshments at the contemporary clubhouse overlooking the 10th and 18th holes. Siam Country Club Old Course is one of the more famous Thailand golf courses. Originally designed by Japanese architect Ichisuke Izumi, Siam Country Club was just the country's second course when it opened in 1970. In those days, heavily contoured greens, large overhanging trees, and gentle bunkering characterized the course. The Old Course was closed in 20062007 for a complete renovation by Americans Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley. Since reopening in 2007, the golf course has hosted several international golf tournaments including being the home of the Honda LPGA Thailand from 2010 onwards. In 2018, Siam CC Old Course was recognized for its excellent when it was voted 73rd best golf course in the world by USA Golf Digest magazine. A must play course.

The Siam Country Club Plantation Course is simply an amazing golf course. Home to the 2009 US LGPA and the 2015 Thailand Open, the Pattaya course plays as difficult as any golf course in Thailand. Nothing was spared by designers Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley. It has 27 cracking holes. Long and tough, with frequent elevation changes it deserves its reputation as one of Thailand’s top tests. Two nines, the 3,759-yard par-36 Tapioca and the 3,645yard par-36 Pineapple, feature Asia’s first triple green. However, the pick of its three nines is arguably the Sugar Cane course where the 5th, a fiendish par-5 with over 28 bunkers, symbolises the veracity of the challenge. The magnificent contemporary designed clubhouse with excellent restaurant and lounge area overlooks both the triple green and Pattaya City.

The Siam Country Club's Rolling Hills Course is located 2.5 kilometers past the Waterside Course. Designed by Schmidt-Curley Design, who made use of traditional elements more commonly found on mature parkland courses. The front nine moves away from the clubhouse on relatively flattish land and has a more of an open feel to it with hardly any foliage or large trees on the property. The back nine plays up and down with more elevation change. Two large lakes come into play here, and the landscape varies from marshlands to small stands of trees. Many planted pine trees ensure that straw is used to good effect, another design element from the past. The most dramatic hole is the par-5 15th, with 12-meter-tall bunkers each, which is deeper and steeper than the next. A challenging addition to Siam CC Pattaya courses.

At over 7,400 yards, the back tees challenge the best golfers. At the same time, other tees down to 5,000 yards are available and offer enjoyment for players at any level.

While Loch Palm Golf Club is not the longest Phuket golf course, it is definitely one of the most enjoyable and consistent. Nestling among a range of jungleclad hills and nearby sister club Red Mountain, Loch Palm, as the name suggests, has palm trees liberally dotted around this parkland layout, although never too densely. On the front nine, the primary objective is keeping the golf ball on dry land; many holes play alongside the loch (a sizeable lake), which has a habit of cutting across some of the gently undulating fairways. The back nine has tighter and more undulating holes; one of the best is the 14th, a par3 played downhill to a green surrounded on three sides by water. Golf carts are optionally available, and the course is always in top playing condition. The newly renovated clubhouse serves excellent Thai food at reasonable prices.

Red Mountain Golf Course opened in 2007 and is now considered Phuket's most spectacular golf course. The 18 holes wind their way through a former tin mine site, with a dramatically undulating landscape, where soft red rock and dense jungle were the principal ingredients; Red Mountain has garnered plaudits both for the standard of golf and the stunning scenery on offer. As you might expect from its name, dramatic elevation changes are a feature, of course, architect Jonathan Morrow's design: most notably at the short 17th, a plunging downhiller played to a postage stamp green surrounded by lush jungle foliage, definitely a Kodak moment. Hats off to Red Mountain for what the club literature describes as 'the most exciting golf course in Phuket'... perhaps 'in Asia' might also apply.

Beyond the fairways, Katathong welcomes guests to unwind in elegant accommodations and rejuvenate at its tranquil spa, where treatments are inspired by local traditions and natural minerals. The design reflects the rich Chino-Portuguese influence of the region, adding cultural depth to your stay.

Katathong is not just a golf resort it’s a reflection of Southern Thai charm, Phang-Nga pride, and the spirit of sustainability Whether you’re here for the game, the nature, or the escape, this hidden gem promises an experience like no other.

The bunkers and fairways are in fantastic condition, given the exposed nature of the landscape and offer a 5-star golfing experience. The design of the first 18 by world-famous golf course designer Mr. Ron M Garl was inspired by the magnificent hills on its horizon. The new nine holes opened in 2016, play towards the rear of the resort and are separated into three distinct zones. The pine tree zone is more of a parkland area, the wetland zone plays through marshes, and working rice paddy fields highlight paddy zone. VIETNAM

With 80 golf courses and another 51 in the planning stage, a compelling argument can be made for Vietnam as a true golfing heavyweight in the region.

Vietnam is a destination that covers a vast array of bases: something that is reflected in the variety of its top golf courses, which range from tropical beauties to some of the closest equivalents to classic links play in the Far East, with layouts such as the Dunes course at Danang Golf Club and The Bluffs Ho Tram Strip regularly ranking among the best layouts in Asia, even the World.

Numerous gems are scattered at destinations throughout the country, maintaining this gold standard.

While its buzzing cities are an undoubted highlight, Vietnam's bounty of towering mountains, emerald paddies, and endless white sand beaches are ripe

for exploration. Throughout this tapestry are woven outstanding golf layouts guaranteed to thrill the most exacting connoisseur of the royal and ancient game.

Many of these courses are fairly new, benefiting from the latest technology and offering the most up-to-date greens and fairways.

A fascinating mix of old and new Vietnam, Hanoi changes quickly but maintains a strong sense of identity. The Vietnamese capital lends itself to investigation, full of things to see, from the architecture of the Old Quarter and the French Quarter to Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum and the Temple of Literature. Meanwhile, within easy striking distance of the capital are a stellar selection of golf courses that capitalise on the verdant scenery and mountain views.

The restless ying to Hanoi's statelier yang, Ho Chi Minh City deserves its reputation as Vietnam's most dynamic city. The southern hub is the country's leading financial centre, and its relative affluence is reflected in its gleaming skyscrapers and swanky rooftop bars. It, too, has a great selection of varied golf challenges. For golfers, though, the most lucrative rewards lie away from the two main cities.

In Central Vietnam, Danang, often referred to as Vietnam's Golf Coast, is now regarded as one of Asia's true golf hubs. It's also a gateway to excellent beaches and the UNESCO-listed town of Hoi An. Other golfing treasures, meanwhile, lie further south along the coast at Quy Nhon, Nha Trang and Ho Tram.

DID YOU KNOW?

Golf in Vietnam may not be ancient, but it's undoubtedly royal. In fact, for much of the 1930s, the original holes at Dalat Palace Golf Club –Vietnam's most venerable club – were the private fiefdom of the nation's last emperor, Bao Dai, who commissioned the course following a trip to France, where he discovered the sport. The course was abandoned in 1945 after the emperor left for Hong Kong but was revived thankfully in the 1950s and again in the early 1990s and remains a charming place to play.

The Norman-designed Dunes Course opened in 2010, uses the sandy loam soil of Danang Beach, and it immediately leapt to fame, being recognised as one of the 15 best new courses in the world by USA GOLF magazine. The links-style golf experience was crafted as much by Mother Nature as it was by any golf architect. The adjacent Nicklaus Course, opened in 2020, offers a different style of golf from the original Norman Course, which plays in Dunes and Ocean settings. 5 REASONS TO TRAVEL TO VIETNAM FOR GOLF

Thailand is a fantastic destination for golf enthusiasts, offering a mix of world-class courses, a warm climate, and a vibrant culture, making it a compelling choice for a golf trip.

Here are five reasons to consider Thailand for your next golf vacation:

1. DIVERSE GOLF COURSES:

Vietnam boasts a variety of golf courses, from linkstyle courses along the coast to hilly courses in the central highlands, catering to different playing styles.

2. YEAR-ROUND PLAYABILITY:

The country's long, thin shape and diverse terrain allow for golf year-round, and different regions offer optimal weather conditions in different seasons.

3. DESIGN BY RENOWNED ARCHITECTS:

Many of Vietnam's golf courses are designed by renowned golf architects like Greg Norman, Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, Luke Donald, and Robert Trent Jones Jr., ensuring highquality and challenging play.

4. CULTURAL IMMERSION:

Beyond the golf, Vietnam offers a rich cultural experience with stunning scenery, delicious cuisine, and vibrant cities, making it an excellent destination for a complete vacation.

5. COST-EFFECTIVENESS:

Vietnam offers a more affordable golfing experience than other popular golf destinations, making it accessible for a wider range of travelers. Indeed, it is estimated that the cost of living in Vietnam is around %10 cheaper than in Thailand. A meal for two at a mid-range restaurant costs less than US20$, while a local beer in a bar can cost as little as US1$.

CAMBODIA

From something short of a standing start, Cambodia has emerged as one of Asia’s newest and most exciting golf destinations. Cambodia won the Asia Pacific Best Golf Destination of the Year Award at the Asia Golf Tourism Convention (AGTC) 2025. It was voted on by over 700 International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) members worldwide.

Visitors have long been enchanted by the ancient temples at Angkor near Siem Reap: the visceral remnants of the once mighty Khmer empire. Now, they can tee it up at three stunning courses within easy reach of the legendary relics.

While the Siem Reap courses tended to hog the limelight, the nascent golf scene in the Kingdom no longer begins and ends around the temple town.

While the country’s main beach resort, Sihanoukville, does not (yet) have any course to speak of, the options around the capital, Phnom Penh, are improving all the time, with quality tracks characterised by canny design and lush, attractive fairways lined with sugar palm trees – an icon of this beautiful nation.

For such a small country, Cambodia certainly packs a lot in. Few haven’t heard of the temples at Angkor near Siem Reap. At the same time, the capital, Phnom Penh, has matured into one of Asia’s most happening cities, with a restaurant and entertainment scene that is equal to more established regional hubs.

So far, the golf scene in Cambodia is a two-city show with Siem Reap and Phnom Penh as the focus of interest for visitors. In Siem Reap, with the relics providing a suitably impressive backdrop, world-class tests such as the Nick

Faldo-designed course at the Angkor Golf Resort and the Phokeethra Country Club offer a compelling cure for temple fatigue.

Phnom Penh has plenty to savour, with tracks like the IMG-managed Garden City, Sir Nick Faldo’s unique Vattanac Golf Resort and the recently opened Chhun On golf club designed by Brian Curley.

Many vacationers now take advantage of the -5star Mekong River cruises from Saigon to Phom Penh and then up to Siem Reap.

DID YOU KNOW?

This spurt in international vacationers coming to Cambodia is partly due to Impact of Hun Sen, the prime minister on Cambodia's golf tourism industry. He loves the game and in the past was often seen playing golf with various overseas politicians and VIPs.

The par-5 16th is a 588-yard monster that is a prime test of psychological mettle due to water and a fiendishly angled green. The par-3 17th is a tricky, long, short hole, while the 18th, which features a water hazard running all the way down the left side, is an absolute peach. The East Course, which opened in 2019, is publicly accessible, while the West Course, which opened in 2020, is a private members' layout. The par-72 East Course at over 7,467 yards plays through scale models of pre-Angkorean structures, including Preah Vihear Temple, Bayon Temple, and Angkor Wat. Water comes into play on most holes, and the lack of elevation change is more than made up for in mounding, bunker complexes, and extensive landscaping. The newer West course's layout, featuring massive green complexes, demands accurate shot-making from the better player to shoot par. However, wide fairways and generous layups make Vanttanac West remain playable and enjoyable for high handicappers. Vattananc is a must-play addition to Asia's golf scene!

MALAYSIA

The popularity of recreational golfing has recently been rising in Asia. Even amid the pandemic in 2020, research showed that over 23 million across the region played golf that year, rising from 20.9 million in 2016 . Of the Southeast Asian countries, Malaysia grew the largest –the number of golfers grew by %25 within the timeline.

From layouts carved from virgin jungle to championship tests that rank amongst the most challenging in Southeast Asia, Malaysia is blessed with plentiful manna for golfers. Despite this, the country can be underrated as a golf destination. This relative neglect has resulted in positive benefits for golfers visiting the country.

Over 200 golf courses are spread across Malaysia, and you can choose where you would enjoy playing golf the most. The country’s varied landscapes are also a plus.

First and most importantly, playing Malaysia’s tremendous assortment of courses rarely breaks the bank. With a weekday round on good-quality layouts, the nation is a world leader when it comes to great-value holiday golf.

Golf options range from coastal layouts to tracks located high in mountainous terrain close to the famous tea plantations or in jungle environs where the main spectators are the resident monkeys. What’s more, Malaysia is no slouch when it comes to providing offcourse thrills and relaxation. Some of the world’s finest beaches can be found here, and the tropical scenery is often outstanding.

In the north of the peninsular section of the country, the paradise island of Langkawi is home to the thrilling Els Club Teluk Datai. The quality rarely lets up as you venture further south on the mainland.

The country’s vibrant capital, Kuala Lumpur, is a portal to several world-class tracks, including TPC Kuala Lumpur and The Mines. Meanwhile, the southern state of Johor is also home to numerous excellent layouts, such as the two Els Club Desaru Coast courses.

Standards remain elevated when you travel to Malaysia’s portion of the giant island of Borneo. The state of Sabah is long established as a haven for golfers. With the imposing bulk of Mount Kinabalu – the tallest peak in Southeast Asia – providing a dramatic backdrop, golfers will scale the heights of design excellence at a collection of tropical beauties that encapsulate Malaysia’s overall appeal as a golf destination.

DID YOU KNOW?

All of us dream of getting at least one hole in one during our playing career. It can also bring substantial awards – with even club players scoring everything from free holidays to new cars by achieving the feat. A more unusual prize, however, was offered to golfers at a charity tournament held in the Malaysian state of Kedah in 2017: a cow! Tournament director Datuk Yusoff Md Shah said he wanted to try a different approach to prize-giving. “I am aware this could be the first time a cow has been presented as a prize,” he said. Tragically, nobody scored a hole-in-one.

TPC Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (KLGCC) is located just 8 km from Kuala Lumpur. With 36 holes from which to choose – configured as the East and West courses – KLGCC offers a unique experience, but if you only have time to play one course, pick the championship West. Nelson & Haworth originally designed the West Course, which opened for play in 1991, but Parslow and Associates extensively reconstructed the layout throughout eighteen months. The revamped West Course reopened in October 2008. The third makeover was completed in 2018. It has hosted numerous PGA, LPGA and DP World tours, and has a great layout using the natural terrain with elevations, lakes, wellplaced bunkers…it’s all here!

Kota Permai would score highly if a golf course were judged by its roll call of accolades. The club has hosted numerous big-name professional tournaments, including the Asian Tour Volvo Masters and the qualifying event for the World Cup of Golf in 2007. The Ross Watson design is in harmony with nature and reflected in the wildlife and mature trees found throughout the golf course. The course measures 6,396 meters from the tips, and this Kuala Lumpur golf course features a tantalising mix of straight holes and doglegs, while scenic water hazards and sculptured bunkering add form and challenge to play. In 2004, Kota Permai Golf & Country Club completed renovations that included greens rebuilding to United States Golf (USGA) specifications, upgrading of tee boxes, adding more vertical railway-sleepers to the bunkers, and expanding the clubhouse.

Saujana was created out of the rolling hills of a former oil palm estate. There are two courses here, Palm and Bunga Raya, characterised by undulating fairways, mounds, bunkers, ridges, lakes and ponds. Both Saujana courses are equally challenging and maintained in championship conditions year-round. The Saujana Palm Course has hosted the prestigious Malaysia Open seven times and was honoured to become the first golf course in Asia to host the inaugural European & Asia PGA Tour event. Nicknamed “the Cobra”, the Palm Course is widely acknowledged as the toughest in the country with its tight, palm-lined fairways and fast, tricky greens. The sloping greens are fast, while the dramatic elevation changes and undulating fairways are challenging even to professionals.

Located on low-lying land of the estuary of the Pulai River, the mostly mangrove forest surrounding the Jack Nicklaus Legacy course (7,012 yards) has wide fairways, flanked by waste sand areas, and forms the basis for the desert-like golf course. The usual Cacti at desert golf courses were substituted with hundreds of palm trees, giving the Legacy Course a tropical feel. Their second 18 holes opened in 2019 and is known as the Llang Guo Kun Classic Course (7,138 yards). They have narrow fairways and water hazards, with many flower beds and their greens are elevated and severely undulated. The Ocean Course has a mandatory golf cart policy. Carts are permitted on the fairways and come outfitted with a state-of-the-art GPS. There are no caddies. The unbelievably scenic layout in the north of Langkawi meanders through a million-year-old rainforest down to the crystal-clear blue waters of the Straits of Malacca. Given the undulating nature of the terrain, the front nine here is relatively flat but beautiful, while the hillier back nine includes the 16th, where giant overhanging trees make the route to the green on the approach tricky. Excellent clubhouse and resort hotel on site, too.

The Els Club Teluk Datai is situated on the mystical island of Langkawi and is renowned for its spectacular mountain scenery and virgin rain forest. The course opened in 1992, as Datai Bay Golf Club, and was completely re-designed by Ernie Els, reopening for play in 2014. The greens meander their way through a 10-million-year-old rainforest, cascading down to the turquoise waters of the Andaman Sea, with the majestic backdrop of the marbled limestone peaks of the Mat Cincang Mountain.

5 REASONS TO TRAVEL TO MALAYSIA FOR GOLF

1. GREAT VALUE FOR MONEY

Malaysia’s tremendous assortment of courses may be high-quality, but rarely does it break the bank to play them. While neighbouring Singapore has some of the highest green fees in the world, Malaysia is far more economical. The average cost of a weekday round of golf in Malaysia, including green fees and buggy rental, can cost just around US$60. Malaysia is a world leader when it comes to great-value holiday golf.

2. HUGE COURSE VARIETY

If there is a variety you seek, Malaysia has a full range of challenges to suit all players in the store. Options range from beautiful coastal layouts and legendary courses located near major urban centres to tracks carved through rainforests or located high in mountainous terrain. It’s all here!

3. EXCELLENT TRANSPORTATION

Although it bills itself as ‘truly Asia,’ Malaysia’s excellent transport infrastructure belies popular images of rickety trains and trafficchoked highways. Great roads, a decent rail network, and affordable internal flights on low-cost airlines such as Air Asia, Firefly, and Malaysian Airlines make getting from course to course a cinch.

4. REST AND RELAXATION

Malaysia is not a freewheeling party destination like its holiday golf rival Thailand next door, but its laid- back atmosphere is legendary. The locals are friendly, the beaches and resorts are wonderful and alcoholic refreshments are readily available. Meanwhile, cities such as Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu in Sabah have lively nightlife scenes.

5. UNDER THE RADAR APPEAL

It seems strange considering its obvious attributes, but Malaysia remains relatively untouched by the hand of mass golf tourism. While expats and locals keep the courses busy at the weekend, traffic is blessedly sparse at other times. Hit even the top-rated courses during the week, and there’s a good chance you won’t get held up once.

INDONESIA

With over 17,000 islands, each with unique sights, sounds, and tastes, Indonesia is one of our favorite places to travel.

Indonesia may not be the first country that springs to mind when considering a golfing holiday. Still, the nation is rapidly establishing itself as a truly special place to play golf. Indeed, with its vast collection of diverse islands, it is one of Asia’s wildest golfing rides.

The nation offers rich rewards to visiting golfers, extending along the equator from the Straits of Malacca in its far northwest to distant Papua in the east. From the wealth of courses in the Riau group of islands near Singapore –

where the magical Laguna Bintan heads up a phalanx of top-quality clubs -- to a varied selection of tests around the capital Jakarta and neighboring Bogor West Java.

Also, enjoy the incredible layouts that weave through lush jungle and verdant paddy fields in the rest of Java and in Bali. the nation offers rich rewards to visiting golfers.

With some of the friendliest caddies in Asia, fantastic food, culture, and other off-course attractions, Indonesia is well placed to stake its claim as a golfing heavyweight in the region.

The Indonesian archipelago is peppered with over 180 golf courses, but the best-quality layouts, especially those

catering to international golfers, are concentrated in Java, Bali, and the Riau group of islands near Singapore.

No trip to Indonesia is complete without visiting Bali, and the so-called “Island of the Gods” is well teed up for golf thanks to the presence of top clubs such as New Kuta CC on the cliffs of or the Peter Thompson-designed Handara Golf & Resort Bali up in the mountains.

However, Bali is not just about golf. Here, you can enjoy relaxing massages, watch some of the world’s best sunsets, or explore a fantastic craft centre like Ubud.

DID YOU KNOW?

The most volcano-pocked nation on the planet, Indonesia is home to 127 active peaks. Nestled among the stunning mountain range of Bali, at an altitude of over 1,500 meters above sea level, lies a resort that promises to take you on a journey of self-discovery. Peter Thompson created Handara Golf & Resort Bali in the crater of a volcano in the mountains of Bedugul, a 2-hour drive from Nusa Dua and 1 hour from Ubud. It is an opportunity to immerse yourself in a mindful Forest Bathing experience that will inspire relaxation, creativity, and happiness. All 18 green complexes have been updated, and bunkers have been reduced and given better positions in more strategic locations, while fairway tiers and mounds have been added to enhance the playing strategy. The Laguna Bintan layout, comprising two out-and-back 9-hole loops, is more undulating on the front-nine, flatter on the back, and contains some memorable holes. The front nine starts with unique sea views, then wraps around a series of lagoons. The back nine plays on the resort's other side, playing through the dense jungle and the unique rock outcroppings. 5 REASONS TO TRAVEL TO INDONESIA FOR GOLF

1. THE REGION’S MOST DIVERSE GOLF DESTINATION

If you’ve ever wondered what it might be like to play golf in the crater of an extinct volcano before moving on to a course that carves through jungle and along tropical ocean shores, then wonder no more. Indonesia’s vast collection of islands offers both environmental and cultural diversity, resulting in golf and off-course experiences that never get old.

2. THE FRIENDLIEST CADDIES IN ASIA

Thailand and Vietnam may beg to differ, but Indonesia can stake a compelling claim to having the most convivial caddies in the region. On arrival at a golf course, don’t be surprised if you are greeted by a chorus line of friendly female caddies eager to make your acquaintance and ensure that your round goes smoothly. In addition to being enthusiastic, the girls are mostly highly trained in the nuances of their home course and are likely to save you a fair few strokes.

3. PLAY ONE OF THE MOST REMOTE COURSES IN ASIA

Papua, the western half of New Guinea, is regarded even by Indonesians as one of Asia’s last frontiers. Golf, though, has arrived in the state, and in spectacular fashion, in the shape of Klub Golf Rimba Irian. Designed by acclaimed US design duo Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore, the course is routed across a lowland swamp—at one time inhabited by a Melanesian tribe—in the shadow of Puncak Jaya, the highest and most sacred peak in Indonesia.

4. ASIA’S MOST GOLF FRIENDLY CAPITAL

Jakarta may not possess the historic charm of other capitals in Asia. What it does have, though, and in abundance, is easy access to an impressive range of quality golf courses. There are 35 clubs to choose from in the city and its surrounding areas, including some of the finest layouts in the country. With its lively nightlife and great restaurant scene, meanwhile, the city is also an excellent place for off-course R&R.

5. EASY VISA POLICY

Travelers currently need a visa to visit Indonesia for Business or Tourism. They can get a visa on arrival at the port of entry, such as an international airport or border crossing. A visa on arrival allows them to extend their stay once for an additional 30 days. However, rules can change, so it's best to ask your tour operator for the latest regulations.

PHILIPPINES

Despite its modest size, the Philippines holds some impressive statistics. The archipelago, consisting of over 7,000 islands, is renowned for its remarkable biodiversity, boasting the highest rate of animal species discovery on the planet.

Not often requested by international golf vacations in the past, compared to its Asian neighbours, the Philippines has started attracting overseas players looking for exciting new challenges. Even the Asian Tour has returned to organise several tournaments there as well!

Many courses are located around Manila and spread out throughout 5,000 of those islands. With a population exceeding 100 million, the Philippines offers a vibrant culinary scene that pleases both locals and tourists. The variety of dishes ranges from prestigious restaurant

menus to simple yet mouthwatering street food stalls offering delicacies like Adobo, Sinigang, and Lechon.

Given its small land area - about 300,000 square kilometers - it's astonishing how the Philippines has nurtured a robust collection of world-class golf courses, with around 111 Golf Courses in total. Amidst the diverse landscapes, from the sparkling coastline to the mountainous highlands, golf enthusiasts will discover courses that challenge their skills while offering captivating natural scenery.

These range from globally celebrated courses close to Manila, such as the Orchard Golf & Country Club, known for hosting prestigious tournaments, to less prominent yet equally exceptional courses such as Wack Wack Golf & Country Club, Sherwood Hills,Tagaytay Highlands, and

the Riviera Golf Club. Many are members-only clubs; however, some tour operators are sometimes able to secure a weekday time.

In addition to these marquee courses, the Philippines also offers an array of other golfing experiences that cater to a range of preferences and skill levels. Many are now heading to Clark and Angeles City, a two-hour drive north of Manila. At least seven currently operate in the Clark-Angeles area, and more are planned for the future, including three new courses designed by Faldo and Nicklaus Design. The game of golf was introduced to the Filipinos in Manila by the British employees working for the Manila Railway Company in 1886, when the Philippines was a Spanish colony. At first, British railway workers played on a three-way golf course that they built in the paddy fields south of Intramuros, Manila. You can still play there today.

Set against stunning foothill mountains and luscious greens of plants and trees, golf–minded individuals visiting Mimosa can enjoy some spectacular scenery.
