This year, 89 of Portugal’s iconic eco-Blue Flag beaches are in the Algarve (out of a total 332), and 11 of them are right here in Lagos.

Add to this the tourism and golf awards the region has received and you begin to understand what is already appreciated by those who know the western Algarve.

The next phase of our touristic village, Bela Colina, is now open and includes a new pool, children’s play area and dedicated reception. Resort management will continue to improve Bela Colina by adding even more facilities and services to entice guests to return.

Queen of the waves Joana Schenker, who last year rewrote Portuguese history books by winning the world Bodyboard Championships, will be helping the nation’s schoolchildren become aware of the serious environmental problems facing our oceans.

Fresh from the victory that made her Portugal’s first-ever professional world champion in wave-riding sports and adding to her 2017 Portuguese and European titles, Joana has become an ambassador for Lisbon oceanarium’s Blue ocean Foundation and starts visiting Algarve schools from September.

The 30-year-old, born to German parents in the Algarve's beautiful Costa Vicentina, began bodyboarding at 13, training daily, competing successfully and rising through the junior ranks.

She turned professional in 2013, dominating the Portuguese and European bodyboarding scene ever since and is especially grateful to sponsors Vila do Bispo council and Sagres non-alcoholic beer, and to her family, for their continued support. while training ahead of the 2018 season, she still finds time to teach young children to bodyboard: “It is for the local kids, for the next generation to keep the sport alive. It is so important for me to be able to give something back to the sport and we have some of the best beaches in the world for it, especially around Sagres where I grew up.”

A rainha das ondas Joana Schenker, que no ano passado reescreveu a história portuguesa ao vencer o Campeonato do Mundo de Bodyboard, irá agora dedicar-se a ajudar os alunos do país a tomar consciência dos graves problemas ambientais que os oceanos enfrentam.

Ainda no rescaldo da vitória onde se sagrou a primeira campeã mundial profissional de Portugal em desportos de ondas, e após colecionar mais alguns títulos nacionais e europeus ao longo da temporada de 2017, Joana é agora embaixadora da Fundação Oceano Azul, do Oceanário de Lisboa, e irá começar a visitar as escolas do Algarve já a partir de setembro.

A atleta de 30 anos nasceu na bela Costa Vicentina, no Algarve, no seio de uma família alemã, e começou a praticar o desporto aos 13 anos. Com os treinos diários chegou às competições e o tão ambicionado sucesso foi alcançado ainda no escalão júnior. Tornou-se profissional em 2013 e, desde então, tem estado sempre no topo das tabelas do bodyboard português e europeu. Joana está especialmente grata aos patrocinadores do concelho de Vila do Bispo, à Sagres Sem álcool e à sua família, pelo apoio contínuo.

Enquanto treina antecipadamente para a próxima temporada, Joana tem ainda tempo para se dedicar a ensinar bodyboard a crianças: “Esta é a próxima geração que deverá continuar a manter este desporto vivo. É muito importante para mim poder contribuir para esta modalidade e temos algumas das melhores praias do mundo para tal, especialmente em Sagres, onde cresci.”

It was a heart-rending story in the most literal terms. Soon after producing Portugal’s first-ever Eurovision Song Contest victory in 2017, jazz and soul singer Salvador Sobral announced he needed a heart transplant.

The 28-year-old’s winning ballad, “Amar Pelos Dois” (Love For Both of Us), had captivated Eurovision audiences. Fans were devastated to hear about his health problems, flooding social media with good luck messages when he was admitted to hospital in September.

During the three-month wait for a donor organ at Lisbon’s leading heart hospital, Salvador began working on a new album. Early in December, he had a successful transplant and released Excuse Me Ao Vivo (Excuse Me Live) just before Christmas. The nine-track album of live concerts he performed until his enforced break includes a moving jazz version of “Amar Pelos Dois”. when he left hospital in January 2018, doctors told him to “take life quietly”. But as Portugal geared up to host this year’s Eurovison Song Contest in Lisbon, in May, Salvador announced he was returning to the stage and working on another album. he will perform at various events and jazz festivals in Portugal and Spain through the summer, the EDPCoolJazz festival in Cascais on July 18 and Festival F in Faro on September 1.

Foi uma história verdadeiramente imprópria para cardíacos. Logo após a primeira vitória histórica de Portugal no Festival Eurovisão da Canção em 2017, o cantor de jazz e soul Salvador Sobral anunciou que precisava de um transplante de coração. A balada vencedora “Amar Pelos Dois”, cantada pelo intérprete de 28 anos, cativou a audiência do festival internacional. Pouco depois, os fãs ficaram arrasados ao descobrir o problema de saúde do cantor, e, solidários, inundaram as redes sociais com mensagens de apoio aquando do seu internamento em setembro de 2017.

Durante os três meses de espera por um dador, Salvador começou a trabalhar num novo álbum. No início de dezembro, foi operado com sucesso e lançou o disco Excuse Me Ao Vivo pouco antes do Natal. O álbum com nove faixas extraídas de concertos ao vivo inclui uma versão de jazz de “Amar Pelos Dois”.

Quando saiu do hospital em janeiro de 2018, os médicos aconselharam que levasse “a vida com calma”. Mas, enquanto Portugal se preparava para organizar o Festival da Eurovisão em Lisboa, em maio de 2018, Salvador anunciou que iria voltar aos palcos e que estava a trabalhar num novo álbum. Para já, o músico irá estar presente em vários eventos e festivais de jazz, em Portugal e Espanha, durante o verão de 2018, incluindo o festival EDPCoolJazz em Cascais, a 18 de julho e o Festival F, em Faro, a 1 de Setembro.

Exciting year ahead for new golf captain

Boavista’s newly appointed golf club captain Annie Taylor is looking forward to her new role, nominating Lagos Red Cross as her chosen charity for the year.

Already an active committee member, Annie believes that to enjoy the benefits of the club, you need to give something back: “we have a fantastic members’ club within the resort. The reason I get here at 7am and don’t leave until about 3pm is that when we come off the course we sit and have a drink, socialise and meet new people. It is the heart and soul of the club – the icing on the cake!”

Annie started playing golf about 20 years ago to fill up her time after working and studying for a masters’ degree: “In the UK I worked in banking and the Emerson Group was a customer, but I had never been to Boavista until around 2009 when I met my partner who had an apartment here. we now have a villa overlooking the 13th hole – I just love it!”

She divides her time between Anglesey, in wales, and Boavista, but this year, while captain, she intends to spend at least 10 months here. outside golf, Annie likes to paint, cycle, read, sail and play the piano.

Um novo e emocionante ano para a nova capitã de golfe

Annie Taylor foi recentemente nomeada capitã do clube de golfe do Boavista e está ansiosa por assumir as suas novas funções. A instituição de beneficência escolhida para a próxima época pela capitã também já foi anunciada: a Cruz Vermelha de Lagos. Annie, que já fazia parte no comité há algum tempo, defende que para tirar partido dos benefícios do clube é também necessário dar algo em troca: “Temos um clube de sócios fantástico no resort. Chego aqui às 7h e não saio antes das 15h porque, depois de nos encontramos para jogar, sentamo-nos para tomar uma bebida, socializamos e conhecemos pessoas novas. Este é o espírito do clube, a cereja no topo do bolo!”

Annie começou a jogar golfe há aproximadamente 20 anos, como passatempo nas horas vagas entre as obrigações do trabalho e o mestrado que frequentava. “No Reino Unido, trabalhei na banca e o Grupo Emerson era um dos nossos clientes, mas eu nunca tinha estado no Boavista até 2009. Foi nessa altura que conheci o meu companheiro, que era proprietário de um apartamento aqui. Agora temos uma vila com vista para o buraco 13, e eu adoro!”

A nova capitã divide o seu tempo entre Anglesey, no País de Gales, e o Boavista, mas este ano, após assumir o cargo, pretende passar pelo menos 10 meses em Lagos. Para além de jogar golfe, Annie gosta de se dedicar à pintura, andar de bicicleta, ler, navegar e tocar piano.

Angariação de fundos para um amigo especial

A família do falecido golfista português José Baltazar Martins será beneficiada com 1800 euros arrecadados no torneio realizado no campo de golfe da Boavista, em janeiro.

O evento foi organizado pelos companheiros e golfistas profissionais António Barnabé e Luís Espadinha, com o intuito de ajudar a família de um amigo em necessidade. Neste jogo, os resultados obtidos foram: 1º net, 84 pontos – João Carlota, Xia Yongwei, Wu Ping e Zhan Yongyi; 2º net, 83 pontos – Tomás Gouveia, Ian Bond, Chris Hastie e Hugh Carslaw; 3º net, 81 pontos – Ricardo Santos, Jorge Miguel Rodrigues Varzea, José Armando Pacheco Rodrigues e Nelson Morgado; Mais próximo do pin: André Fialho.

A partir de meados de Agosto, o Boavista irá dar as boas-vindas ao seu novo diretor de golfe. É com grande prazer que o resort acolhe na sua equipa Hugo Pinheiro, licenciado em gestão desportiva e com uma carreira de 15 anos na indústria do golfe. Chegado do prestigiado Penha Longa Resort, em Sintra, Hugo vem agora enriquecer ainda mais a experiente equipa do Boavista e juntos manterão e farão prosperar os seus já conhecidos altos padrões de qualidade.

Fund-raiser for friend in need

Coming from the prestigious Penha Longa Resort, near Sintra, hugo will bring a further dimension to Boavista’s experienced team and together will maintain and improve the existing high standards.

out of bounds (including the nearest fairway area), under a two-stroke penalty. This is not applicable to professional or elite competitions.

These latest revisions can also be viewed favourably against the background of several changes already made in 2017, including significant amendments.

There is no penalty for accidentally moving a ball on the green or when searching for a ball; on the green, players may putt without having the flagstick attended or removed, and may repair spike marks and damage by shoes or animals, for example; and there is no penalty for touching the line of putt.

‘Penalty areas’ (no longer only ‘water hazards’) now include a range of hazards, with lateral relief. Also, no penalty for moving loose impediments or touching ground or water in penalty areas. Players will no longer be penalised for moving loose impediments in bunkers or for generally touching sand with hand or club. Restriction of not grounding a club next to the ball is maintained, preserving the sand-play challenge.

There is also an extra relief option for an unplayable ball in the bunker – a ball may be played from outside the bunker, incurring a two-stroke penalty.

The time allowed for searching for a lost ball has been reduced from five minutes to three. ‘Ready golf’ is encouraged in stroke play, and 40 seconds is the recommended maximum time for a stroke.

Clearly, not only golf rules but the great game itself is changing. Significantly, there is a real optimism that even greater numbers will be attracted to golf in the future, and the positive impact of the exciting new rule changes cannot be underestimated. 쐽

Tempo de mudanças

Change ahead New rules signal exciting new era for golf n 2012, the R&A and the USGA conducted a significant revision of the Rules of Golf, in an effort to establish easily understood rules and making golf attractive and accessible.

This review has resulted in some important, and very welcome, changes. when taking relief, a drop is now from knee height – providing standardisation and simplicity while preserving the drop’s random nature. An area of relief is now established by measuring with the longest club available to the appropriate one- or two-club length.

There is no penalty for accidentally striking the ball more than once during a stroke – only one stroke counts. Also, from January 2019, a new Local Rule may be implemented, giving the option of dropping a ball in the vicinity of where the ball is lost 왘

Os jogadores também não serão penalizados por mover obstruções soltas em bunkers ou por tocar na areia com a mão ou com o taco. A restrição de não colocar o taco ao lado da bola mantem-se, preservando assim o desafio do jogo em areia. Há também uma opção de alívio extra para uma bola que não pode ser jogada no bunker – é possível jogar uma nova bola a partir do exterior do bunker, incorrendo numa penalidade de duas tacadas.

Outra alteração diz respeito ao tempo permitido para procurar uma bola perdida: foi reduzido de cinco para três minutos. O “ready golf” é incentivado nas partidas “stroke play”, sendo que o tempo máximo recomendado para uma tacada passa a ser 40 segundos.

Novas regras assinalam uma nova era para o golfe m 2012, a R&A e a USGA realizaram uma revisão significativa das Regras de Golfe, num esforço conjunto para estabelecer normas que fossem facilmente compreensíveis e que tornassem o golfe mais atraente e acessível. Desta revisão resultaram algumas mudanças importantes e muito bem-vindas.

Ao realizar o alívio, o drop é agora feito à altura do joelho – de forma a estabelecer um padrão e simplificação, preservando a natureza aleatória do drop. Uma área de alívio é agora estabelecida usando o maior taco disponível, para o comprimento apropriado de um ou dois tacos.

Não existe penalização se acertar acidentalmente na bola mais de uma vez durante uma jogada – conta apenas como uma tacada. Para além disto, a partir de janeiro de 2019, pode ser implementada uma nova Regra Local, dando a opção de fazer o drop nas proximidades de onde a bola foi perdida ou saiu dos limites (incluindo a área do fairway mais próxima), sofrendo uma penalização de duas tacadas.

Porém, este procedimento não é aplicável em competições profissionais ou de elite.

Crescer com o golfe Futuros campeões descobrem o golfe no Boavista

n any sport, it is best if youths start practising as soon as possible, in order to get the best results. That way, chances for evolution and success will be much greater. Keeping this philosophy in mind Boavista Golf & Spa Resort has been offering children free golf lessons, since october 2017, through a collaboration established with two initiatives: the Drive School project and the School Sports programme.

David Moura, manager of the Portuguese Golf Federation’s (FPG) youth Development project, explains that the Drive School began as a pioneering initiative in Portugal during the 2015/2016 season and it is divided into four categories: Drive Prof, Drive Challenge, Drive Tour and Drive School. The latter is aimed at children in the third and fourth grades. “The idea is to involve in this project the school community, the council and the golf courses,” he says. In this circuit designed for schools, the FPG provides training to the teachers, who will then work 왘

the children and they also “supply the equipment they need to practise”, he explains. “It is a great project to awaken their interest and to start the kids off in golf.”

It was under the remit of Drive School that, on May 6, Boavista organised the first nine-hole putt tournament, which hosted several students from the Lagos council area. on May 19, the best from each council in the country met on another golf course to determine the top players from each region, who later competed at the national championship on July 2 and 3.

In 2018, there are already 31 Portuguese councils involved in the project, 250 schools and around 12,000 students from both private and public schools. In the Algarve, every council from Loulé, Albufeira, Portimão and Lagos enrolled in the initiative, totalling 1,209 students from 29 schools. overall, the FPG invests €50,000 a year in Drive School.

Regarding the School Sports programme, Rui Martins, a PE teacher at Escola Básica das naus, in Lagos, is in charge of a group of 14 students, aged between 10 and 13, who for the first time had the opportunity to have golf as an optional activity. once a week, the young pupils visit the Boavista course, where, for two hours, they learn and practise different techniques. “For this initiative to be possible, there was an agreement between three entities: the school, the council and Boavista,” he says.

“Lagos council supplies transport for the students and they are able to play the sport at the training grounds and with equipment supplied by Boavista.”

Rui, who had never been involved in the sport, was trained

by FPG before venturing into this pilot project. “we began training in october 2017 and the group has been the same since. They are very young, but highly motivated and committed,” he assures. “There have even been changes in their behaviour. when they go to the golf lesson, they become more controlled, focused and respect the rules. They change their conduct and behave themselves! It is very interesting.”

Every year “there are four to five encounters between students from different schools who play the sport. The top students compete first at a local level, then regional and, finally, national.” Boavista’s goal is to continue to provide all the right conditions these youngsters need to evolve and fall in love with the new sport they are discovering. who knows, maybe they are the champions of the future. 쐽

No dia 19 de maio, os melhores de cada município encontraramse num outro campo de golfe, para apurar os melhores de cada região, que, por sua vez, competiram depois no campeonato nacional, nos dias 2 e 3 de julho.

Em 2018, em Portugal, existem já 31 municípios envolvidos neste projeto, 250 escolas, e cerca de 12 000 alunos do ensino público e privado. Uma vez por semana, estes jovens deslocam-se ao campo do Boavista, onde, durante duas horas, aprendem e praticam diversas técnicas de golfe. “Para que esta iniciativa seja possível, estabeleceu-se um acordo entre três entidades: a escola, o município e o Boavista”, explica o professor. “A Câmara Municipal de Lagos cede o transporte aos alunos e estes têm a possibilidade de praticar o desporto nas áreas de treino com materiais apropriados cedidos pelo Boavista.”

Rui Martins, que nunca antes se tinha dedicado à modalidade, recebeu formação por parte da FPG antes de se aventurar neste projeto piloto. “Iniciámos os treinos em outubro de 2017 e o grupo manteve-se desde então. São muito jovens mas estão bastante motivados e comprometidos”, refere. “Há inclusive mudanças no seu comportamento. Quando vão para a aula de golfe ficam mais controlados, focam-se e respeitam as regras.

Mudam a sua conduta e comportam-se! É muito interessante.”

Anualmente “existem quatro a cinco encontros entre alunos de diferentes escolas que praticam a modalidade. Os melhores alunos competem primeiro a nível local, depois regional, e, por fim, a nível nacional”. O objetivo do Boavista é continuar a proporcionar a estes jovens todas as condições para evoluírem e se apaixonarem pela nova modalidade que estão a descobrir.

A born leader Six months after her re-election, the mayoress of Lagos talked to Boa Vista magazine about the plans she has for the district over the next four years aria Joaquina Matos was elected on october 14 2013 and later re-elected on october 1 2017, with a significant victory (52,98%). The woman in charge of Lagos council reveals that a lot has changed in the district over the last five years: “we were able to rebalance the council’s financial situation”, which allowed it to keep “implementing essential construction works in Lagos, and to resume projects, action and support in many operating areas”.

Much has been done, but there is still much more to do and, according to the mayoress, the priorities for the next four years, among other goals, are already set: “Increase municipal housing, be more thorough in waste collection, renovate basic sanitation infrastructures, invest in the school network infrastructures and historic heritage, finish the third stage of the Anel Verde park, renovate the Ponta da Piedade fort, promote mobility in the historic centre and reinforce the regional public transportation network.”

Regarding historic heritage, she highlights the works already in place at the Dr José Formosinho Municipal Museum, which aim to “enhance the rich collection of this facility and to pay deserved homage to the memory of its founder”. It is a twostage project, the first of which is already underway and consists in renovating the museum’s Primitive Section, while the second will focus on expanding it, with the addition of an Archaeology Section. Lagos city walls also recently underwent “priority intervention”, as this is an important “example of military architecture with significant historic and heritage value”. other important work in motion involves renovating the famous Ponta da Piedade fort, one of the city’s landmarks, and improving the area by creating elevated, wooden resting areas as well as shaded zones. This project will also be done in two distinct phases. The first is already in progress, and will soon see a wooden pedestrian and cycle path, which will connect to different lookout points. Also, “we will rethink the site’s road accesses and parking, and we are planning on erecting an evocative monument/memorial to the life and work of Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen – a key figure in Portuguese literature and poetry who so often admired and publicised the Costa D’oiro caves”, says the mayoress.

a family of wealthy Lagos fishermen, Gonçalo dedicated his life to the needy. In a miracle, after his death, he appeared before a shipwrecked relative who he guided to safety. near the main fish market, a contemporary monument acknowledges the entrepreneurial spirit of Lagos navigators, who reaped great wealth for Portugal, bringing back gold, silver, ivory, silk, cotton, spices, exotic birds, and much more. Its three spirals represent the commitment of those brave men to dominate the sea and launch themselves into the unknown.

In his eponymous square, sits the imposing statue of Prince henry the navigator (1394-1460), third son of King John I of Portugal and England’s Philippa of Lancaster, governor of the Algarve, and original patron of the voyages of discovery. As head of the wealthy Military order of Christ, he appropriated funding for expeditions from Lagos along the west coast of Africa. his epithet, ‘navigator’, was something of a misnomer as henry never sailed far, although during his years spent living near Sagres, some historians accredit him with starting a school of navigation.

It was his squire, Gil Eanes, born in Lagos in 1395, who became the first European navigator to cross the previously impassable Cape Bojador in 1434. As proof of his mission, Eanes brought back an indigenous succulent plant, the Rose of Santa Maria, after which one of the city’s parishes was named. his 왘

Perto do mercado do peixe, existe um outro monumento mais contemporâneo em homenagem ao espírito empreendedor dos navegadores de Lagos, que trouxeram grandes riquezas para Portugal, como ouro, prata, marfim, seda, algodão, especiarias, pássaros exóticos e muito mais. As três espirais representam o compromisso destes homens corajosos em dominar o mar e em aventurar-se no desconhecido.

Na sua praça epónima, ergue-se imponentemente a estátua do Infante D. Henrique, o Navegador (1394-1460), terceiro filho do rei João I de Portugal e da inglesa Filipa de Lancaster, governador do Algarve, e padroeiro precursor das viagens dos descobrimentos. Enquanto chefe da opulenta Ordem Militar de Cristo, apropriou-se de verbas para expedições que partiam de Lagos para a costa oeste da África. Apesar de ser apelidado de “Navegador”, na realidade, não existem registos de que tenha navegado grandes distâncias. Porém alguns historiadores acreditam que tenha sido o responsável por fundar uma escola de navegação enquanto vivia perto de Sagres. 왘

o seu escudeiro, Gil Eanes, nascido em Lagos em 1395, que se tornou no primeiro navegador europeu a atravessar o intransponível Cabo Bojador, em 1434. Como prova da sua missão, Gil Eanes trouxe de volta uma planta suculenta indígena, a Rosa de Santa Maria, a qual serviu de inspiração para nomear uma das paróquias da cidade. A sua estátua fica localizada dentro da antiga freguesia, no Jardim da Constituição.

Já a Praça Gil Eanes acolhe a controversa mas simbólica estátua do menino-rei D. Sebastião (1557-1578), esculpida pelo famoso artista português João Cutileiro, que retrata o monarca que desapareceu durante a batalha de Alcácer Quibir, em Marrocos. Sem herdeiro legítimo ao trono, Portugal caiu sob domínio espanhol, dando origem à ideologia mística do sebastianismo: que um dia D. Sebastião retornará, durante uma manhã de nevoeiro, para salvar a nação.

painéis de parede em madeira foram removidos, revelando a fonte de batismo da igreja, agora visível numa das reentrâncias da loja. Os tapetes velhos, arrancados de uma escada de pedra, revelaram epígrafes, possivelmente partes de lápides recuperadas e recicladas provenientes dos escombros do Terramoto de 1755 que destruiu grande parte de Lagos, e até o teto artesoado da galeria foi completamente reconstruído.

A altura da estrutura central permitiu ainda a construção de uma mezzanine para acomodar o bistro, enquanto as zonas de biblioteca e música ocupam as bancadas originais do coro. O conceito de terraço no telhado foi a solução perfeita encontrada por Célia para permitir a entrada de mais luz: “O sol é uma parte integral da nossa cultura – é um desperdício não tirar partido dele!”

Dois anos após a sua inauguração, o Mar d’Estórias continua a evoluir. Célia, natural de Lisboa mas residente em Sagres, quer mostrar aos turistas “o que realmente temos de melhor”. Recentemente, desafiou a artista Gabriela Eufrásio a produzir uma nova gama de postais ilustrando “o verdadeiro espírito de Lagos”. As imagens exclusivas do Mafarrica Design Studio incluem postais, cartazes e imanes, e têm-se revelado um sucesso retumbante (repare no postal do Infante D. Henrique).

E poderá Célia identificar qual a verdadeira alma de Lagos?

“Lagos recebe visitantes de todo o mundo, e penso que aquilo que os atraí é a sua autenticidade, a história, os Descobrimentos... Aqui, em pleno centro histórico, ainda é possível sentir o coração e alma desta cidade. Até a luz tem um especial brilho aqui: basta admirar as cores do mar, da areia, dos edifícios – os azuis, em particular, são tão fortes. É incrível!”

It was a wine and grain warehouse (1916-1926) and from 1932 to 1986, served as the headquarters of Lagos fire brigade (the look-out tower now a feature of the roof-top terrace). Célia speaks passionately about the challenges of bringing the building back to life: “we tried to return it to its essence, to restore its dignity and soul. There were bureaucratic and archaeological obstacles along the way, but we really believed in what we were doing.” wooden wall panels were removed, revealing the church’s baptism font, now visible in a recess within the shop; old carpets, ripped off a stone staircase, unearthed inscriptions, possibly parts of gravestones retrieved and re-cycled from the rubble of the 1755 earthquake that destroyed much of Lagos; and the gallery’s coffered ceiling was completely reconstructed.

The sheer height of the central structure allowed the addition of a mezzanine to house the bistro; another, for literature and music, occupies the original choir stalls. The roof-terrace 왘

Two years on, Mar d’Estórias continues to evolve. Lisbon-born Célia, who lives in Sagres, wants to show tourists “the really good things that we have here”. She recently challenged her artistic colleague, Gabriela Eufrásio, to produce a new range of postcards illustrating “the true spirit of Lagos”. The Mafarrica Design Studio exclusive image range, including postcards, posters and fridge magnets, is a resounding success (see Prince henry postcard).

Can Célia pinpoint the real soul of Lagos? “People visit Lagos from all over the world and I think what they feel is its authenticity, its history, the discoveries… Down here, in the historical centre, you still feel its heart and soul. It’s also about the light, it’s so bright: you can see the colours of the sea, the sand, the buildings ‒ the blues, in particular, are so strong – it’s amazing!”

Capítulo II: Um ministro e um revolucionário nos comandos do Boavista o capítulo anterior, o Capitão Miguel José Ferreira e Brígida Brak-Lamy adquiriram parte das atuais terras do Boavista. Desta união nasce, em 1780, o primeiro filho do casal, José Brak Lamy, em Lagos. José faz um bacharelato em Leis (Direito) na Universidade de Coimbra, a única universidade em Portugal na época. Mais tarde, o casal teria um segundo filho, António.

De acordo com um livro paroquial de 1809, Miguel viria a falecer durante as invasões francesas (ver 'Bloqueio Continental' ): “Com todos os sacramentos faleceu o capitão Miguel José Ferreira, casado com D. Brízida Maria Caetana Brake, e foi sepultado nesta igreja de São Sebastião desta freguesia de Lagos”, pode ainda hoje ler-se. É durante esta conturbada altura de invasões (ver 'Portugal sem rumo'), que, a partir de 1809, Brígida e a família se refugiam em Monchique. Entre 1808 e 1811 José Brak-Lamy, enquanto Juiz de Fora, conduz no primeiro ano a Junta Governativa de Silves, com o intuito de dirigir a guerra, compensando assim o vazio de poder. entre França e Inglaterra, as duas potências dominantes da Europa, os franceses acabam por retornar a casa derrotados. É também por esta altura que Brígida vende a sua loja de tecidos para fabrico de roupas, um dos setores de negócio mais lucrativos da cidade.

Destacado no Brasil, em 1822, José Brak-Lamy preside à segunda e última Junta do Governo Provisório, cujo objetivo era evitar a independência do Brasil. No entanto, ainda no mesmo ano, acaba por alegar doença e volta a Portugal. Enquanto deputado, e marcado pela sua frustrada prestação no Brasil, decide então tornar-se no percursor de um projeto-lei que ambiciona alargar as colónias africanas, que na época não passavam de feitorias na costa de Moçambique e Angola.

Na época, existiam dois governos no Reino: um continental, que seguia o regime Absolutista de D. Miguel, e outro insular, cujo regime Liberal era conduzido por D. Pedro (ver 'Absolutismo e Liberalismo' ). O irmão de José, António Brak-Lamy, encontrava-se na Quinta da Boavista, em Lagos, aquando da chegada de uma comitiva represen-

tando o Rei D. Miguel, com o intuito de divulgar a ascensão ao trono do monarca. Posteriormente, e aproveitando-se do poder que lhe era conferido pelo facto de ser capitão de Ordenanças em Lagos, consegue convencer os militares a combaterem a ilegitimidade do Rei e conspira uma revolução contra o monarca no Algarve. É detido em 1823 e 1828, acabando por cumprir pena na prisão do Limoeiro, em Lisboa, de onde apenas será libertao em 1834.

Quando as tropas comandadas por D. Pedro implementam um Governo Liberal nos Açores, José Brak-Lamy torna-se Ministro dos Negócios Estrangeiros em Angra do Heroísmo.

A 8 de julho de 1832 o Exército Libertador, no qual José integra a comitiva, desembarca no Mindelo, no Porto, para tomar aquela cidade. Este feito vale-lhe uma medalha da Ordem Militar e Espada, a condecoração mais prestigiante atribuída por esta entidade.

Há ainda diversas provas, que remontam a 1823, de que José terá pertencido à maçonaria, adido à loja Filantrópica de Lagos. No Norte, existem registos deste ministro em diversas 왘

n our previous chapter, Captain Miguel José Ferreira and Brígida Brak-Lamy acquired part of what is currently the Boavista site. From their union, the couple’s first son, José Brak-Lamy, is born in 1780, in Lagos. he goes on to gain a bachelor’s degree in law from Coimbra University, the only university in Portugal at the time. Later, the couple would have a second son, António.

According to parish records from 1809, Miguel would die during the French invasion of Portugal (see 'Continental Blockade' ). The entry, “with all the sacraments, Captain Miguel José Ferreira died. he was married to Lady Brízida Maria Caetana Brake and was buried in this church of Saint Sebastian of this parish of Lagos,” can still be read today.

During this troubled time of the invasions (see 'Without a leader'), Brígida and her family took refuge in Monchique from 1809. Between 1808 and 1811, José Brak-Lamy, as a Juiz de Fora (magistrate appointed by the king to serve in the municipalities), leads the Silves Govern-

mental Council, aimed at directing the war and compensating for the power vacuum. once the conflict between France and England (Europe’s two dominant powers) was over, the French return home defeated. It is also around this time that Brígida sells her clothing fabric shop, one of the most lucrative business sectors in town.

Deployed to Brazil, in 1822 José BrakLamy presides over the second and last Provisional Government Council, whose goal was to avoid the country’s independence from Portugal. however, that same year, he claims to be ill and returns home. As a council member, and scarred by his weak performance in Brazil, he then decides to initiate a bill to expand the African colonies, which at the time were simply trading posts on the coast of Mozambique and Angola.

Meanwhile, there are two ruling governments in the Kingdom: one continental, which followed Miguel I’s absolutist regime, and an insular one ruled by Pedro IV’s liberal model (see 'Absolutism 왘

Later, taking advantage of the power conferred on him as an ordnance Captain in Lagos, he is able to convince the army to fight the king’s illegitimacy and plots a revolution against the sovereign in the Algarve. he is arrested in 1823 and 1828 and eventually serves time at Limoeiro prison, in Lisbon, from where he is only released in 1834. when troops ruled by Pedro IV of Portugal implemented a liberal government in the Azores, José Brak-Lamy

becomes Minister of Foreign Affairs in Angra do heroísmo. on July 8 1832, the Liberal Army, to which José belongs, docks at Mindelo, in Porto, taking the city. This earns him a medal of the order of the Tower and the Sword, the nation’s most prestigious military honour.

There is a lot of evidence dating back to 1823 that José was part of the Freemasons, connected to the Lagos Philanthropic lodge. In the north, records also exist linking him to several other masonic lodges, as well as indications that he may have held magistrate positions, such as Supreme Court Justice advisor.

Living in Lisbon at the end of his life, José Brak-Lamy gives his brother power of attorney to buy a property. António then acquires what will be the largest expansion plot of Quinta Boavista: the “farm in Atalaia, Monte da Covana”, with fig trees and a vineyard, and which is today home to the resort’s Bela Colina and Lakeview area.

After José’s death, he leaves his entire fortune to his nephew Mariano: other stories and other plots that we will be bringing to you in future chapters, as we continue to unravel the fascinating 200year history of Boavista resort using local and national archives. 쐽

ABSOLUTISMO E LIBERALISMO Com os Franceses chegam também as ideias liberais.

Em 1820, a burguesia, ostracizada e estrangulada pelos ingleses e em resposta ao Absolutismo, implementam o Liberalismo em Portugal, caraterizado pela separação de poderes, antes centrados no Rei Absoluto. Com o Liberalismo abandona-se o modelo corporativista e protecionista, dando lugar a um plano económico de iniciativa privada.

Dois irmãos, D. Miguel e D. Pedro, encabeçam estas duas correntes políticas, Absolutista e Liberal, respetivamente, o que culmina na guerra civil 1832-34. Em 1828, D. Miguel usurpa o reino, implementando o velho Absolutismo. É neste contexto que este monarca começa a perseguir todos aqueles que defendessem ideais contrários à sua cor política.

ConTInEnTAL BLoCKADE At the beginning of the 19th century, Napoleon Bonaparte decrees a Continental Blockade forbidding English ships to dock at European ports. As a way to stop the French from invading its territories, Portugal accepts this. The English retaliate and threaten to invade the Portuguese colonies. Stuck between a rock and a hard place, the country expects the worst.

The French go on to invade Portugal, the king and the court flee to Brazil, and the country is left without leadership.

During the Peninsular war, the Portuguese army joins British forces to fight the French army between 1807 and 1810. Some have a different perspective on this conflict: the English and French fought their battles on foreign land, making the collateral effects practically zero for their territories. The French lose the war and Portugal’s king remains in Brazil. The Provisional Portuguese Government, headed by William Beresford as the Commander in Chief of the Portuguese Army, leads the country until 1820.

ABSoLUTISM AnD LIBERALISM The French also brought along liberal ideas. In 1820, the bourgeoisie, ostracised and strangled by the English, establish liberalism in Portugal as an answer to absolutism. This was characterised by the separation of powers, which used to be centred in the absolute monarch. Adopting liberalism means abandoning the corporative and protectionist regime, giving room to an economic model of private initiative.

Brothers Miguel I and Pedro IV head the absolutist and liberalist campaigns, respectively, which will eventually lead to the 1832-34 Civil War. In 1828, King Miguel I usurps the throne, implementing the old absolutist regime. As a result, the monarch begins prosecuting all those who defend ideals contrary to his own.

Walking festivals The Algarve Walking Season festivals are perfect for discovering Lagos on foot alking is still the best way to discover the Algarve. This is the premise behind the Algarve walking Season (AwS) project, which aims to promote the region through several yearround walking festivals. “The idea was to create a calendar of events focused on walking festivals in the Algarve, outside the high season and inland,” explains Anabela Santos, of Almargem (Association for the Defence of the Algarve’s Cultural and Environmental heritage), one of the event’s organisers.

After a successful Alcoutim walking Festival, in the eastern Algarve, from April 6 to 8 and the Ameixial walking Festival, in central Algarve, from April 27 to 29, the programme now focuses on the Lagos event, in the west. Another fundamental idea behind this project is establishing the Algarve as a destination of choice for recreational walking and nature-related activities by promoting this type of event all year round. Anabela believes that “this way, we can attract more visitors to inland Algarve, combating the region’s seasonality”.

This regional project was approved in 2018, following an application to the Inland Tourism Enhancement support line and is coordinated by QRER – the Cooperative for the Development of Low-density Regions – in collaboration with the Algarve Tourism Board and in partnership with Alcoutim Council and the Almargem Association. 쐽

Pelo local passa ainda a Via Algarviana, uma Grande Rota Pedestre que liga Alcoutim a Sagres com uma extensão de 300km, pelo que parte das caminhadas se deverá desenrolar no troço mapeado da mata. “Teremos caminhadas temáticas, longas, curtas e para famílias. E existirão diversas empresas de animação turística envolvidas no evento”, explica Anabela Santos.

Outra ideia fundamental por trás deste projeto é estabelecer o Algarve enquanto destino de eleição para a prática de pedestrianismo e atividades de contacto com a natureza, através da promoção deste tipo de festivais ao longo de todo o ano, pois “assim conseguiremos atrair mais visitantes ao interior do Algarve, atenuando a sazonalidade da região”, remata Anabela Santos.

Este projeto regional foi aprovado em 2018 ao abrigo de uma candidatura à Linha de Apoio à Valorização Turística do Interior, e é coordenado pela QRER – Cooperativa para o Desenvolvimento dos Territórios de Baixa Densidade, em articulação com a Região de Turismo do Algarve e em parceria do Município de Alcoutim e a Associação Almargem. 쐽

Land ahoy!

Over the last 172 years it has been a convent, a fortress and a lighthouse. Learn about the history of the Sagres lighthouse that lights the way for the sailors of Cape Saint Vincent ife as a lighthouse keeper has lead 55-year-old Ataíde Correia across the whole country. Always keeping an eye on the horizon, he reveals that lighthouses are his home: “I treat everything with a lot of care, because it is an honour to live and work in a place like this.”

Ataíde joined the Portuguese navy in 1983. he worked at the Sagres naval radio station, at Cape Mondego, in Figueira da Foz, the Berlengas Archipelago in Peniche, Paço d’Arcos, the Saint Maria lighthouse, in olhão, and Ponta do Altar lighthouse, in Ferragudo. “I have lived in lighthouses for 20 years,” he recalls.

In Sagres, where he is the head keeper, he has three other colleagues: Assalino Bárbara, Jorge Guerreiro and Arménio Gomes. They all live in the lighthouse with their families.

“There are only four today, but in the past there were as many as seven families of lighthouse keepers.” 왘

Ataíde ingressou em 1983 na Marinha Portuguesa. Passou pela rádio naval de Sagres, pelo Cabo Mondego na Figueira da Foz, pelas Berlengas em Peniche, Paço d’Arcos, pelo Farol de Sta. Maria em Olhão e Ponta do Altar em Ferragudo. “Vivo em faróis há 20 anos”, recorda. Em Sagres, onde desempenha a função de faroleiro-chefe, explica que trabalham mais três faroleiros: Assalino Bárbara, Jorge Guerreiro e Arménio Gomes. Todos habitam no farol com as suas respetivas famílias. “Hoje são só quatro, mas já chegaram a ser sete famílias de faroleiros no passado.” 왘

work in shifts and in pairs. Each shift clocks up 24 hours’ work, and there is a lot to do. According to Ataíde, “a lighthouse keeper is an artisan who knows how to do anything”. They master “mechanics, electronics, electricity, physics, chemistry, meteorology”, and have many responsibilities such as painting, equipment maintenance, changing pipes and general cleaning. “we check the service sheet and maps, keep an eye on the weather, the sea and sailors.” At sundown, the procedure has been the same for over 100 years: the keeper climbs to the top of the lighthouse, checks all the equipment and opens the ‘curtains’. The light shines on the horizon, within a radius of 32 nautical miles.

The head keeper reveals that lighthouses are increasingly more “modern and automated. They are a plus and they work well, but they also break down! The salty air affects a lot of the equipment, because these are sensitive electronics, so we invest a lot of time in cleaning and lubricating them.” According to Ataíde, “everything needs to be functional at all times, since the lighthouse still helps with navigation and it is still considered a last resort to get to shore. The keeper reveals that there are many factors that make this lighthouse unique and special. Currently, its hyper-radiant lens (with a 1,330mm focal distance) is the largest in Portugal and one of the biggest in the world. “It has the largest optical equipment, but that is not the only thing that makes it stand out. It is the only one at the tip of Europe. It stands out for its geographic location at ‘the end of the world’. And the sunset here is one of the best. People come from all over the world to witness this phenomenon at the end of the day. our ancestors called this place ‘ponta sacrum’, meaning the sacred point, as they believed this is where the gods lived,” he says.

Its cylindrical shape rises to 28 metres and stands 86m above the average sea level. The lighthouse can be visited every wednesday between 2pm and 5pm and the tour lasts 20 to 30 minutes. 쐽

O faroleiro-chefe revela que cada vez mais os faróis estão “modernos e automatizados. São uma mais-valia e funcionam bem, mas também avariam! O ar salgado afeta muito os equipamentos, pois são eletrónicas sensíveis, por isso, investimos muito tempo em limpezas e lubrificações”. Segundo Ataíde, “tudo tem de estar sempre a funcionar, pois o farol ainda representa uma ajuda à navegação, e ainda é considerado o último reduto para se conseguir chegar a terra. Uma segurança para quando tudo o resto falha! Há centenas de anos que a luz deste farol se acende”, afirma com orgulho.

O faroleiro revela que existem diversos factores que tornam este farol único e especial. Atualmente, a sua ótica hiperradiante (com 1 330 milímetros de distância focal) é a maior em Portugal e uma das maiores em todo o mundo. “Tem o maior aparelho ótico, mas não é só isto que torna este farol singular. É o único que está na ponta da Europa. Destaca-se pela sua localização geográfica no ‘fim do mundo’. E o pôr-dosol é um dos mais maravilhosos. Há quem venha dos quatro cantos do mundo para assistir a este fenómeno natural ao final do dia. Os antepassados chamavam a este local ‘ponta sacrum’, ou seja, ponta sagrada, pois acreditavam que era aqui que os deuses moravam”, relata.

A sua torre cilíndrica em cantaria tem uma altura de 28 metros e fica 86 metros acima do nível médio da água do mar.

O farol pode ser visitado todas as quartas-feiras entre as 14h e as 17h e a visita tem uma duração de 20 a 30 minutos. 쐽

A new age for Algarve wine Boa Vista tells the story behind Quinta do Barranco Longo, one of the largest wine producers in the Algarve, which is poised to open its doors for wine tourism xactly 20 years ago, a young Rui Virgínia, now 49, the producer of Quinta do Barranco Longo wines in Algoz, began experimenting with wine. Trained in business management, he began his career while producing citrus fruit, but wine eventually took on a more important role in his life. The idea of founding a new Algarve wine brand came about during a summer dinner between winemaker friends and, in 2001, the first experiments with microvinification resulted in small-scale, experimental wine. his passion for this new world of wine intensified even more after Rui attended a few courses and seminars and after travelling across several countries where he was introduced first-hand to the best practices and producers. he understood early on that if he wanted to succeed in the market he needed to have his own vineyard and to manage the whole process, from production to distribution. Nesta edição da revista Boa Vista damos-lhe a conhecer a história dos vinhos da Quinta do Barranco Longo oi há precisamente 20 anos que o jovem Rui Virgínia, 49 anos, produtor dos vinhos Quinta do Barranco Longo, em Algoz, começou as suas primeiras experiências vitivinícolas.

Formado em Gestão de Empresas, iniciou a sua carreira enquanto produtor de citrinos, mas o vinho acabou por tomar um lugar de destaque na sua vida. A ideia de fundar uma nova marca de vinho do Algarve surgiu durante um jantar de verão, entre amigos enólogos, e as primeiras experiências com microvinificações, em 2001, serviram para produzir vinho experimental em pequena escala. 왘

The producer describes his wines as “very elegant, with a lot of freshness, aroma, acidity, low in alcohol but very complex. We want to harvest as much as we can from a grape, without adding extra products to enhance it,” he states. 왘 bottles. what

makes these wines so unique is the clay and limestone soil of the Algarvean Barrocal – the central area between the hills and the coastline – where vineyards mature; the way vines are framed and shaped; and the production process carried out in the most environmentally friendly way possible.

Boa Vista readers will soon be able to learn all about this and other aspects of the winery, when Quinta do Barranco Longo inaugurates its rooftop wine lounge in 2019 - designed to host events and welcome visitors interested in learning more about the brand’s wines. The future of this Quinta will focus on wine tourism. Rui has designed a new building to comfortably house the bottling process, storage, shipping and offices, as well as a cellar for casks; a second phase will see a new building completely focused on enotourism, with a shop, conference and multipurpose rooms, which should be finished and open to the public in 2020.

Twenty years later, Rui is one of the region’s most successful businessmen in the sector, and Quinta do Barranco Longo wines are consensually enjoyed throughout the country.

In total, the Quinta do Barranco Longo operation has resulted in 20 labels. of the approximate total of 70 hectares of land, 20ha are occupied by vineyards and 50ha by citrus trees. nine experts work on the production of these wines, and the facilities comprise an ample, 1000sqm wine cellar, where several dozen stainless-steel vats can produce close to 150,000 bottles of wine every year. The producer describes his wines as “very elegant, with a lot of freshness, aroma, acidity, low in alcohol but very complex. we want to harvest as much as we can from a grape, without adding extra products to enhance it,” he states. The last wine launched in the market was the limited 2014 edition Chrysoperla, an uncertified, signature wine from a single variety: Sangiovese. Rui says this wine is “absolutely fantastic! It’s a red with an open colour, very fresh and elegant.” Also new is the open Red, a claret of three varieties: Touriga nacional, Petit Verdot and Sangiovese. he explains this is “a red suitable for the Algarvean climate and gastronomy: fresh, aromatic, with great tasting depth and very gastronomic”. A paixão pelo novo mundo do vinho intensificou-se ainda mais depois de Rui Virgínia frequentar alguns cursos e seminários, e após viajar por vários países onde conheceu in loco algumas das melhores práticas e produtores. Cedo se apercebeu que, se queria vingar no mercado, teria de ter a sua própria vinha e conduzir todo o processo, desde a produção até à distribuição. Assim, investiu na compra de mais propriedades, planificou o negócio por etapas e foi crescendo de forma sustentável, ao ritmo das suas vinhas. Vinte anos depois, é um dos mais bem sucedidos empresários do setor na região, e os vinhos Quinta do Barranco Longo são consensualmente apreciados em todo o país. No total, já nasceram na exploração da Quinta do Barranco Longo 20 referências de vinho. Dos cerca de 70 hectares de superfície no total, 20 são ocupados por vinhas e 50 por citrinos.

Dedicam-se à produção destes vinhos nove profissionais, e as instalações são compostas por uma ampla adega com 1000 metros quadrados. As várias dezenas de lagares de inox têm capacidade para produzir aproximadamente 150 mil garrafas de vinho anuais. Existe ainda uma sala de reuniões e um outro edifício onde são armazenadas as caixas de cartão, garrafas, cápsulas, stock, recheio, rótulos, materiais de expedição e escritórios.

Queremos retirar da uva o máximo que ela nos pode dar sem adicionar outros produtos para melhorála”, defende. Outra das novidades é o Open Red, um clarete de três castas: Touriga Nacional, Petit Verdot e Sangiovese. De acordo com o produtor, este é “um tinto adequado ao clima e à gastronomia algarvia: fresco, aromático, com grande profundidade de prova e muito gastronómico”. Ambas as referências têm uma produção limitada de 3 300 garrafas. E se existem alguns fatores que tornam estes vinhos únicos são os solos argilocalcários do barrocal algarvio, onde as vinhas se desenvolvem, a forma de armação e condução das vinhas e o processo de produção executado da forma mais ecológica possível. 왘

here is no shortage of seafood to be found on the menus of restaurants here in the Algarve, or for that matter at the fish counter or freezer section of local supermarkets. But to sample the fresh seafood straight from the ocean, we need to seek out the more traditional restaurants, visit the market in Lagos or a specialised seafood shop.

In this article we look at some of the local seafood varieties that can be enjoyed.

LOCAL SHRIMPS This is the standard variety of prawn found off the Algarve coast and available throughout most of the year at local markets. They are usually around 6-7cm in length. Cook them in their shells, either boiled or fried. They need very little cooking and when perfectly prepared the meat is firm, sweet and juicy.

GAMBA DA COSTA Esta é a variedade mais comum de camarão na costa algarvia, e está disponível durante a maior parte do ano nos mercados locais. Geralmente, têm cerca de 6 a 7 centímetros de comprimento. Cozinhe-os com a casca, cozidos ou fritos.

왘 AMÊIJOAS

Os algarvios são apaixonados por amêijoas, e com razão. As águas das lagoas da Ria Formosa e Alvor produzem algumas das melhores amêijoas do mundo. Não só são consumidas sem qualquer acompanhamento, como também são o ingrediente essencial do prato mais famoso do Algarve: a cataplana.

Também é uma especialidade bastante apreciada no Alentejo, onde o prato de carne de porco à alentejana é bastante popular. Mas em Portugal, o modo mais comum de preparar as amêijoas é à bulhão pato: simplesmente cozidas ao vapor em azeite com alho e coentros frescos. Existem vários tipos disponíveis e os melhores são, regra geral, os mais caros, e podem ser identificados pelas sua concha cinza escura ou preta. Os bivalves de casca branca são de qualidade inferior.

왘 CLAMS

The Algarveans are pretty passionate about their amêijoas (clams) and rightly so. The waters of the Ria Formosa and Alvor lagoons produce some of the finest clams you will find anywhere. not only are they eaten on their own, but also form the essential ingredient of the Algarve’s most famous dish, the cataplana and the tasty Alentejo speciality of fried pork with clams – carne de porco à alentejana. But the most common way of preparing amêijoas is known as à bulhão pato, simply steamed open in olive oil with garlic and fresh coriander. There are various types of clams available and the best are usually the most expensive, identified by their dark grey or black shell. The white-shelled clams are of inferior quality.

왘 Carabineiros

can be distinguished from camarão vermelho by their elongated heads and a horn-like spike that protrudes from their head. They also tend to be larger and can often reach the proportions of large tiger prawns. Despite these differences, the flavour is common to both and quite different from gambas.

The meat is both sweeter and richer in flavour, with a far more delicate texture. They are best fried or grilled and also need very little cooking. In fact some of the Algarve fine-dining restaurants serve them either raw or nearly raw.

SPIny LOBSTER Portuguese lagosta, often referred to in English as spiny lobster, but correctly named crayfish, is the most prized crustacean found off the Algarve coast. The common lobster (with claws) is not abundant in these parts while the only other types of lobster commonly seen here are rock lobsters (known in Portuguese as ferreirinhas or bruxinhas). The meat of the crayfish is considered by most chefs as superior to that of the common lobster and carries a higher price tag. It is worth noting that pretty much all common lobsters found for sale here in Portugal are imported live from elsewhere in Europe. If it has been sitting in a tank for weeks or months after having been shipped, chances are the meat will have shrivelled somewhat and gone tough as the crustacean starves. So when buying lobster always keep this in mind, if a retailer or restaurant has a good turn-around of the crustaceans, quality is assured.

GOOSE BARnACLES This variety of barnacle (perceves in Portuguese) clings to the rocks around the tide line on the Algarve’s west coast. They are daringly hand-collected by fishermen who clamber over the rocks, getting very wet and sometimes injured in the process.

So why all the effort? well, to many die-hard locals, perceves are the embodiment of seafood in its purest form – they actually taste of the sea. They are served simply boiled. To eat, hold the crusty bit on the end between your index finger and thumb and twist off the trunk-like skin with your other hand.

The flesh underneath is edible, and delicious. 왘

LAGOSTA A lagosta é o crustáceo mais apreciado da costa algarvia. A lagosta comum (com pinças) não é muito abundante na região, sendo que os tipos mais comuns são as ferreirinhas ou bruxinhas. A sua carne é considerada pela maioria dos chefes como superior, e, por isso, tem um preço mais elevado. É de salientar que praticamente todas as lagostas comuns encontradas para venda em Portugal são importadas vivas de outros lugares da Europa. Se permanecerem num tanque durante semanas ou meses depois de terem sido apanhadas, é provável que a carne se torne fibrosa e dura, à medida que o crustáceo passa fome. Por isso, quando comprar lagosta, tenha sempre em mente que, se o restaurante tiver uma boa rotação de crustáceos, a qualidade destes deve estar garantida.

DOnAX CLAMS The English translation is never used, so just look for conquilhas. They are similar to a clam, only flatter and usually smaller in a slightly elongated shell. Conquilhas also tend to be less expensive than good quality clams but just as highly regarded. They are served in the same way as amêijoas.

SPIDER CRAB A good santola (spider crab) from the Algarve is hard to beat and for many is considered superior even to lobster. with spider crab, bigger usually means better, but if kept in confinement for a long time the meat will shrivel up. This is usually the result of the crab (as mentioned above regarding lobsters) being undernourished during captivity. A good crab will be heavy for its size, although this is difficult to judge for the uninitiated.

The common brown crab (sapateira in Portuguese) is not native to these waters and is imported live in vast quantities, also delicious and considerably less expensive. 쐽

PERCEVES Esta é uma variedade de crustáceos que se agarra às rochas sobretudo em torno da linha da maré na costa oeste do Algarve. São corajosamente apanhadas à mão por pescadores que habilidosamente escalam as perigosas rochas, completamente encharcados e correndo vários riscos durante o processo. Ingredients: 500g of razor clams 2 onions 2 cloves of garlic 1 ripe tomato 1 bell pepper 1 bay leaf 1dl of white wine Olive oil and salt to taste Chopped parsley and mint to taste Toasted bread

Preparation Cook the razor clams with a bit of garlic, parsley and olive oil to open them. Remove them from their shells and set aside.

Peel and slice the onions and chop the rest of the garlic. Fry them in olive oil, add the bay leaf and the sliced bell pepper and wait until it all softens. Once the onion starts to brown, add the chopped tomato and white wine. Season to taste, let it boil and add the razor clams.

Toast some bread slices and place them on the bottom of the plate.

Cover them with the stew and garnish with mint. Add a couple more slices of toast on the side, to dip in that beautiful sauce.

umbbells scattered around the pool and the lively music hint that something fun is about to start at the Essential Fitness & Spa. In fact, there is already a considerable waiting list to participate in the popular hydrogymnastics lessons led by instructors Joana Gonçalves and Vera Rocha. The smiles and good mood of the students that compose the four classes leave no room for doubt. “A lot of friendships were born here. Some of which are very strong,” says Vera. half the class is foreign and the other is Portuguese. People from all over the world enjoy the lessons: Portuguese, English, Swedes, Swiss, Canadian and Icelandic. “It’s really interesting to see the dynamics form between the students. A lot of Portuguese ladies don’t speak English, just as foreign visitors don’t speak Portuguese. however, it’s interesting to see how that language barrier doesn’t stop them from communicating and having fun,” she reveals.

There are even people in the classes who cannot swim, as that is not a requirement to practise hydrogymnastics. The exercises vary in “speed and difficulty” and they mostly work on endurance, muscle and cardiovascular strength, as well as contributing to improved mobility.

“Most people who take the class have dealt with cardiovascular issues, knee surgery, prosthetics, slipped discs, diabetes, obesity or simply want to do some physical maintenance with a sport that is impact-free and low-gravity,” Joana adds.

But what most surprises the instructors is “the social perspective of these lessons”. Students develop such a bond and feeling of belonging that they “arrange to bring props to the lessons relating to different celebrations over the year”. For example, at Christmas everyone takes the class in a seasonal costume and the same happens during Carnaval.

Nas turmas existe até quem não saiba nadar, uma vez que não é uma condição essencial para praticar hidroginástica.

Os exercícios variam em “velocidade e dificuldade” e servem sobretudo para trabalhar a resistência, tonificação muscular e cardiovascular, e contribuem para uma mobilidade mais funcional.

“A maioria das pessoas que passa por esta aula já teve problemas cardiovasculares, operações aos joelhos, próteses, hérnias discais, diabetes, obesidade ou simplesmente pretendem fazer alguma manutenção física recorrendo a uma atividade desportiva sem impactos e com gravidade reduzida”, explica Joana.

“In the past I had tried other activities such as Body Balance, but honestly I thought it was too violent and not very safe,” he recalls. “I then decided to try out yoga while I was in England and realised that it was exactly what I liked.” After moving to the Algarve, he signed up for Boavista’s yoga classes and he loved it. “I try to attend both weekly lessons, and every day I practise my balance and posture exercises at home,” Milns reveals.

“I believe that a lot of what has changed in my life is directly linked to yoga. one of the visible transformations I feel is that my body is much more open,” he explains. “I have a better posture, I move better and the shape of my body has also changed, as my shoulders are much more open. Before I felt that my movements were very stiff, I often had neck pain and dropped shoulders. now, in addition to all this, I also feel that my balance has improved drastically. I feel really good!”

Aside from physical changes, Milns mentions the mental benefits: “yoga gave me a different worldview, as I feel more relaxed. I am of course still affected when bad things happen, but I react much better,” he states. “It made me have a better view of myself because I feel like I handle the world in a better way. The Algarve lifestyle has also been fundamental of course, since we have a spectacular climate and a very pleasant social life, but I truly believe that all

these changes are directly related to yoga.”

Even though he enjoys the challenge of some of the exercises he must perform in class, he points out that yoga goes well beyond physical exercise. “It gives us a completely new spiritual perspective. And besides, the classes also have a very interesting social component where we share experiences and they are fun,” he says. Milns recommends this practice to anyone who is “open and receptive to change”.

Boavista’s yoga instructor, noeline oldham, remembers that when Milns began taking classes, he was always very stiff. “he couldn’t even bend well, due to mental blocks,” she recalls. “only when he allowed himself to be carried away, to surrender and improve his breathing ability was he able to progress. he is one of the most remarkable examples in this group. It is an unbelievable, significant and impressive difference. Right now, during meditation, he is practically the most relaxed and receptive out of everyone. It is an admirable change,” noeline says.

The Yoga classes have around 10 to 12 students and take place every Monday, Wednesday and Friday (Hatha Yoga) and Tuesday and Friday (Yin Yoga), between 9.45amd and 11.15am.

Uma experiência transformadora ranayama (trabalho de respiração), Mantras (repetição de canções ou palavras) e Chakras (centros de energia) são palavras que já fazem parte do dicionário e da rotina diária do inglês Richard Milns, de 68 anos. Nesta edição da revista Boa Vista, Milns partilha uma perspetiva pessoal e íntima sobre a influência do Yoga na sua vida.

“Iniciei-me na prática do Yoga há cerca de dois anos”, começa por explicar. “Antes experimentei fazer outras atividades como Body Balance, mas, sinceramente, achei que era demasiado violento e pouco seguro,” recorda.

“Decidi então experimentar o Yoga quando ainda estava em Inglaterra e descobri que era exatamente isto que gostava.” Depois da mudança para o Algarve, inscreveu-se nas aulas de Yoga do Boavista e adorou. “Tento vir às duas aulas semanais, e todos os dias pratico em casa os meus exercícios de equilíbrio e postura”, revela Milns.

“Acredito que existem várias coisas que mudaram na minha vida e que estão diretamente relacionadas com a prática do Yoga. Uma das transformações visíveis é que sinto o meu corpo muito mais aberto,” explica. “Tenho uma postura muito mais correta, melhores movimentos, e o formato do meu corpo também se alterou, pois tenho os ombros muito mais abertos. Antes sentia os movimentos muito presos, tinha frequentes dores no pescoço e ombros

muito descaídos. Agora, para além de tudo isto, sinto que também o meu equilíbrio melhorou substancialmente.

Sinto-me verdadeiramente bem!”

Para além das alterações físicas, Milns refere os benefícios psicológicos: “O Yoga deu-me ainda uma outra perspetiva do mundo, pois sinto-me mais relaxado. É claro que ainda me sinto afetado quando acontecem coisas terríveis, mas a forma como reajo é muito melhor”, confidencia. “Fez-me ter uma melhor perspetiva de mim mesmo porque sinto que lido com o mundo de uma forma melhor. Claro que o estilo de vida no Algarve também foi fundamental, porque temos um clima espetacular e uma vida social muito agradável, mas acredito verdadeiramente que todas estas mudanças estão diretamente conectadas com o Yoga.”

Apesar de gostar do desafio de alguns dos exercícios que tem de executar em aula, reforça que “o Yoga vai muito além do exercício físico. Dá-nos toda uma nova perspetiva espiritual.

Para além disto, as aulas também têm uma componente social muito interessante no sentido da partilha de experiências, e são divertidas!”, descreve.

Milns recomenda a prática da modalidade a todos os que “estejam abertos e receptíveis à mudança”.

A fairway to living in paradise

Chapter one his must surely be one of the best views in Lagos, I could stay out here all day. we are so fortunate to have found this place,” says Janet as she takes in the sights, sounds and gently undulating landscape set before her.

“Look up there,” urges John, enthusiastically, as he gently places one arm around her shoulders. “I’m sure it’s a hoopoe, can you see it? They are quite common here and just one of many magnificent species of birds common to the Algarve.” “you and your birds,” quips Janet with a contented smile as she inhales deeply.

“The clean air and tranquillity are enough for me, after the hustle, bustle and smog of our city life.”

After a holiday last year at Boavista, Janet and John fell in love with the characterful coastal town of Lagos and especially with the resort, so decided that they would invest in a slice of the lifestyle it offered. Making the decision to buy one of the new Bayview Village apartments was easy. The sales staff were helpful, knowledgeable and assisted throughout the purchase process of buying off-plan. Moreover, they had been very impressed with the quality of build, the facilities, cleanliness and excellent organisation of the development, not to mention the impeccable financial reputation of the parent company.

John surveys the panoramic view across the third fairway towards the shimmering azure sea engulfing the bay of Lagos and, once more, quietly relishes the promise of the game of golf he has booked in the morning and hopes that

Janet will not mind his absence. “Let’s go in now, I’m cooking something very special for dinner tonight and this morning I bought a bottle of that rather special wine you like, so let’s have another toast to our new home.”

From the balcony of the apartment, they enter the spacious, well-proportioned, open-plan living room and Janet turns on the air conditioning, kicks off her shoes and enjoys the cool touch of the ceramic tiles underfoot. At the same time, John opens the integral fridge and retrieves the bottle of chilled white wine. “I love this kitchen, it is a pleasure to cook in and has been so well designed.” Pulling the cork expertly from the bottle, he comments on the pleasurable sound that a cork makes when leaving a wine bottle.

Janet lifts herself slowly onto a stool on the other side of the kitchen island and, once again, casts her eyes around in admiration of the modern cream gloss units and the sight of her handsome husband who passes a large, generously filled goblet. with a chink of glass on glass, she declares, “cheers, here’s to us my darling and to our new home!” She closes her eyes and takes a long, slow sip of the amber nectar before saying, “and what culinary delight awaits me this evening?” “your favourite – prawns and monkfish rice.” John looks up from the wok on the induction hob and comments again on the quality of the appliances and how well the kitchen works.

Janet is enjoying the moment and thinks that she will take a shower

before dinner to enjoy, for a second time that day, the luxury of the rainfall shower and then change into something a little more comfortable. As she slides off the tall stool she says, “I’ll be back in a minute, I’m just going to freshen up after the heat of the day, but I was also thinking we could take a drive along the coast to Sagres tomorrow morning and maybe have some lunch, what do think? or if you prefer, we could use the Bayview gym facilities then chill by the pool.”

Before John can respond, Janet has disappeared. what is he to do? he doesn’t want to disappoint her, or spoil the moment, as he was rather hoping for an enjoyable evening. with lightning inspiration, he turns the gentle heat off under the wok, removes his mobile phone from his pocket and heads quickly to the balcony. Sliding the double-glazed doors to a near-closed position, he taps in the telephone number for Essential Spa and waits for his call to be answered. “Boa tarde, I’d like to book my wife in for a full treatment tomorrow morning, the full works please. Is that possible?” John waits anxiously for a few moments. he does not want to let his golf partner down tomorrow as they are playing in a club competition to which he has been invited for the first time. “oh, thank you, that is good news and as property owners I believe I am entitled to a discount. Perfect.

I’ll come and pay in advance at eight in the morning. you may just have saved my life!” 쐽

How much tax can you save living in Portugal?

How Portugal offers tax appeal for expatriates

Tax-free foreign income Under nhR, most income that is either from a foreign source or taxable in another country is exempt from Portuguese taxation. This means British expatriates can potentially receive rental income, capital gains on real estate, interest, dividends and non-Portuguese employment income tax-free for their first ten years here.

Most UK pensions – including private pensions, company pensions and the State Pension – will also be tax-free under nhR in both countries, no matter how you access your funds.

The exceptions here are UK government pensions (including local authority, army, police, teaching and some nhS pensions), which always remain taxable in the UK. How can you access nHR benefits?

People of any nationality can potentially qualify for nhR if they have not been resident in Portugal in the last five calendar years.

As you need to meet Portuguese residency rules to be eligible, it will be much easier to apply now as a EU citizen. Currently, you can acquire Portuguese residency by spending at least 182 days a year in Portugal or having your main home here.

Although Brexit itself will not affect Britons’ eligibility, the UK government may look to increase taxation of Portugueseresident nationals once it sheds its EU obligations. It is therefore sensible to register for nhR with the Portuguese tax authorities now to lock in today’s benefits.

Portugal is a very tax-efficient place to live in – more so than many other European countries – if you have an in-depth understanding of the tax regime. There are many tax benefits even if you cannot benefit from non-habitual resident status.

Other tax benefits in Portugal Even if you do not qualify for nhR, Portugal can still be highly tax efficient for expatriates. while UK pension income outside nhR attracts Portuguese income tax, in some circumstances you could receive up to 85% tax-free. Local inheritance tax (stamp duty) is also limited; at just 10%, it only applies to Portuguese assets, and spouses and children are exempt.

There is a wealth tax of sorts, but rates are relatively low and it only affects those with Portuguese property worth over €600,000 (€1.2 million for couples).

Portugal offers opportunities to enjoy extremely favourable tax treatment on investments. If you qualify for nhR, you may benefit from combining these structures with the regime rules, for example, by selling a UK property tax-free and reinvesting in a tax-efficient life insurance bond.

Ultimately, the best approach for you will depend on your individual circumstances and aims. Take personalised advice from a cross-border specialist – sooner rather than later – to make sure you take full advantage of what Portugal has to offer.

AUGUST 10, 11 AnD 12 FETAAL Bensafrim The Algarve Traditions and Art Fair (FETAAL) is an annual event organised by Bensafrim parish council, along with Lagos council. JULy 27, 28 AnD 29 Sweet Art Fair Lagos The Sweet Art Competition Fair has been held in Lagos for 31 years and has been instrumental in preserving and reviving one of the most genuine and appreciated traditions in the region: confectionery made primarily from almonds and figs.

The most famous are known as doce fino (marzipan sweets shaped like fruits or animals), but there are all sorts of treats available such as Dom Rodrigos (egg sweets), morgados and morgadinhos (cakes with almond liquor), fig cheese and many more typical sweets that reflect the influence of the Arab presence in the area.

nIGHT OF AUGUST 29 Banho 29 Lagos beaches The “Banho 29” end-of-summer beach party takes place on August 29 – a long-standing, popular celebration and one of the main cultural events in Lagos. As a way of preserving this tradition, and giving continuity to an event that is already deep-rooted in Lagos culture, every year the council makes sure it prepares a programme filled with musical and beach entertainment, a traditional swimsuit contest, small shacks with snacks, handicraft and regional sweets. At midnight, in addition to the traditional dip in the sea, you can watch a colourful firework spectacle from the water. Solaria and Batata beaches are where most people gather to enjoy the music and the swimsuit contest. Meia Praia beach is also involved in the traditional festivities, with enthusiasts gathering around bonfires lined up along the sands. here they drink, eat, tell stories and sing, before and after a dip in the ocean.

NOITE DE 29 DE AGOSTO Banho 29 Praias de Lagos O “Banho 29” realiza-se a 29 de agosto e há muito que se transformou numa manifestação de caráter popular e num dos principais eventos culturais do Município de Lagos. Como forma de preservar esta tradição, e dando continuidade a um evento já enraizado na cultura lacobrigense, a autarquia faz questão de preparar anualmente um programa recheado de entretenimento musical, animação de praia, um concurso de fatos de banho tradicionais, tasquinhas com petiscos, artesanato e doçaria regional. À meia-noite, para além do tradicional mergulho no mar, há ainda tempo para assistir, dentro de água, a um colorido espetáculo de fogo de artifício. Em Lagos, é na Solaria e na Praia da Batata que se junta o maior número de entusiastas, reunidos pela proximidade da animação musical e do concurso de trajes de banho. A tradição também se cumpre na Meia Praia, com os entusiastas agrupados em torno das fogueiras alinhadas ao longo do areal. Ali se bebe, come, conta e canta antes e depois do mergulho.

The prince became one of the most important figures in world history and the Portuguese Discoveries, being intimately linked to the Algarve and Lagos.

The programme features exhibitions, concerts, lectures, book presentations and many guided tours through the three districts.

13 DE NOVEMBRO Celebração do Infante D. Henrique Aljezur, Lagos & Vila do Bispo A propósito dos 558 anos após a morte do Infante D. Henrique, a Associação de Municípios Terras do Infante – entidade formada pelos municípios de Aljezur, Lagos e Vila do Bispo – organiza anualmente um conjunto de atividades destinadas a homenagear e reforçar o papel do descobridor, que se tornou numa das figuras mais importantes da história mundial e dos Descobrimentos portugueses e que está intimamente relacionado com o Algarve e Lagos. O programa anual conta com exposições, concertos, palestras, mostra de livros e diversas visitas guiadas nos três municípios.

EnD OF nOVEMBER Feira Franca near the Lagos Municipal Stadium The Lagos Feira Franca was established by the local council in 1931, aimed at forming a new, annual livestock fair. Until nearly the end of the 20th century, it was held at the Rossio de S. João square, later moving to grounds beside the Municipal Stadium, where it takes place today. nowadays, the fair sells an array of items such as fruit, clothes, shoes and jewellery, with visitors also enjoying constant entertainment, several carousels and activities.

FINAL DE NOVEMBRO Feira Franca Perto do Estádio Municipal de Lagos A Feira Franca de Lagos foi instituída por deliberação camarária em 1931, com o objetivo de constituir uma nova feira anual de gado. Até quase ao final do século XX teve lugar no Rossio de S. João, tendo depois transitado para o terreiro junto ao Estádio Municipal, onde hoje se realiza. Atualmente, nesta feira comercializam-se diversos artigos como fruta, vestuário, calçado e bijuterias, e os visitantes podem ainda desfrutar de constante animação, vários carrosséis e atividades.
