A house on the hill Bela Colina is the dream neighbourhood to rent a peaceful holiday home n arrival, it is easy to see why the development was named “Beautiful hill”. This lovely neighbourhood comprises 112 colourful units for temporary rental and their layout and views will take your breath away.

It is impossible to resist the charm of this project, which began construction in 2015 and is now entering its final stage.

In 2019, another 16 units will be ready, located right at the highest point.

Besides the rental properties, another important feature is the new pool, as well as a reception to support Bela Colina clients, who can now look forward to two adult outdoor pools and two for children and babies.

But that is not all: 2019 should see the opening of a new on-site restaurant for up to 180 people, with outdoor and

indoor areas, and whose menu will be based on Mediterranean cuisine.

The Bela Colina properties have an annual occupancy rate of around 80% and are highly prized, particularly among the Iberian market, Scandinavian countries, the British and French.

The modern, spacious, air-conditioned apartments, with balcony, are elegantly decorated. Standout features include the fantastic paintings by artist Florent, placed in almost every room, depicting scenes inspired by typical Lagos landscapes and experiences. These are the only units available for temporary rental in the entire resort. Clients also have free access to the spa, namely the indoor pool, sauna, Turkish bath and Jacuzzi. The apartments are cleaned daily and the bedding and towels are changed once a week. 쐽

Uma casa na colina O Bela Colina é o bairro de sonho onde poderá arrendar casa para umas férias tranquilas o chegar ao empreendimento é fácil perceber porque recebeu o nome de «Bela Colina». Este bonito bairro é constituído por 112 coloridas habitações, destinadas ao arrendamento temporário. A sua configuração e vistas deixam-nos imediatamente apaixonados. É impossível ficar-se indiferente ao charme deste empreendimento que começou a ser construído em 2015, e que entra agora na sua fase de conclusão. As casas do Bela Colina possuem uma taxa de ocupação anual de cerca de 80 por cento, e são bastante apreciadas, particularmente pelo mercado ibérico, inglês, francês e países escandinavos.

Resort is represented at renowned International Golf Travel Market

Boavista Golf & Spa Resort attended the International Golf Travel Market (IGTM) in the Slovenian capital, Ljubljana, between october 15 and 18 ‒ a fair dedicated to golf sector professionals.

Represented by golf director hugo Pinheiro and Graça Almeida, head of Careways management services, Boavista participated in several meetings and networking events, enabling close contact with suppliers and golf operators from all over the world, as well as establishing new partnerships.

According to Pinheiro, “there are two types of participants at this fair: buyers, which are tour operators and travel agencies, and suppliers, consisting of hotels, resorts and golf courses”.

For a resort with a growing tourism operation, thanks to its new building programme, this was an excellent opportunity to showcase Boavista’s all-round potential to the biggest international golf operators.

The fair is hosted in a different location every year and was held in the Algarve in 1998 and 2012. Boavista intends to attend the 2019 event in Marrakech, Morocco.

O Boavista Golf & Spa Resort esteve presente na International Golf Travel Market (IGTM), uma feira dedicada a profissionais do segmento de golfe, entre 15 e 18 de outubro, em Liubliana, capital da Eslovénia.

Representado por Hugo Pinheiro, atual diretor de golfe, e Graça Almeida, responsável pela Careways e alojamento, o Boavista participou em diversas reuniões e eventos de networking, que permitiram um contacto mais próximo com fornecedores e operadores de golfe de todo o mundo, bem como a criação de novas parcerias. De acordo com o diretor de golfe do Boavista «nesta feira, existem dois tipos de participantes: os buyers, operadores turísticos e agências de viagens, e os suppliers, representados por hotéis, resorts e campos de golfe». Para um resort com uma crescente operação turística, através da construção de novas unidades de alojamento, esta revelou-se numa óptima oportunidade para demonstrar todo o potencial do empreendimento nas suas várias valências, junto dos mais importantes operadores de golfe internacionais.

A feira é organizada numa região diferente todos os anos, sendo que o Algarve já recebeu o evento em duas ocasiões (1998 e 2012).

Em 2019, será a vez de Marraquexe, em Marrocos, onde o Boavista pretende marcar novamente presença.

Charitable classic

Seventeen teams competing in the 6th John Aldridge competition, plus generous auction donations, helped raise a magnificent €12,500 for Portuguese and English charities, including nECI and several animal shelters. held at Boavista and Espiche courses, near Lagos, on August 31 and September 1, 2018, the winners were Riley Roos, Tony o’Mara, Joseph Mackenzie, Steve Diston and Tee Sweeney.

After retiring from football, the former Liverpool and Republic of Ireland footballer John Aldridge decided to dedicate his free time to golf and in particular, raising impressive amounts for several charitable institutions.

A 6.ª edição da competição John Aldridge decorreu de 31 de agosto a 1 de setembro, nos campos de golfe do Boavista e Espiche, ambos em Lagos, e angariou cerca de 12 500 euros, posteriormente distribuídos por várias associações portuguesas e inglesas, como a nECI e diversos santuários para animais.

Em 2018, o torneio contou com a participação de 17 equipas e teve como vencedores Riley Roos, Tony O’Mara, Joseph Mackenzie, Steve Diston e Tee Sweeney. no final do evento decorreu ainda um animado leilão, onde diversos artigos foram a hasta pública para angariar ainda mais fundos.

Depois de terminar a sua carreira no futebol, John Aldridge decidiu dedicar o seu tempo livre ao golfe, angariando fundos para diversas instituições. Ao longo dos últimos 16 anos, o ex-jogador do Liverpool e da República da Irlanda tem vindo a angariar impressionantes quantias que revertem a favor de causas solidárias.

Golfing hat-trick

Boavista successfully organised the inaugural west Algarve Trophy between December 4 and 7, in close collaboration with nearby Espiche and Palmares courses, which looks set to become a staple in the region’s golfing calendar. over 50 players enjoyed the unique opportunity of playing this trio of top western Algarve golf courses. After a welcome drink on inauguration day, the competition began with a singles stableford on December 5 at Espiche, followed by play at Boavista and Palmares on the remaining days. Tivoli Lagos hosted the gala dinner and award ceremony. once again, the Algarve has proved to be Portugal’s leading golf region, with Boavista at the forefront of the support and organisation of pioneering golf projects in the South.

Hat-trick para o golfe

Pela primeira vez, o Boavista organizou o torneio West Algarve Trophy em estreita colaboração com os campos de golfe de Espiche e Palmares, no concelho de Lagos. Entre 4 e 7 de dezembro os participantes tiveram a oportunidade única de disputar esta competição nos três campos de golfe. Depois de uma welcome drink no dia inaugural do torneio, a competição iniciou-se no dia 5 na modalidade de singles stableford no campo de golfe Espiche. Os jogadores prosseguiram no Boavista no dia seguinte e, por fim, terminou no dia 7 no campo de golfe de Palmares. O jantar de gala e atribuição de prémios realizou-se no Tivoli Lagos e encerrou esta edição inaugural, que juntou os melhores campos de golfe da zona ocidental do Algarve. A iniciativa contou com a participação de mais de cinco dezenas de jogadores e revelou-se um verdadeiro sucesso. uma vez mais, comprova-se que o Algarve é a região do país que mais aposta no golfe, e que o Boavista se encontra na linha da frente na promoção e organização de inovadoras iniciativas de golfe na zona sul do país. um evento a repetir.

Lest we forget Boavista commemorates the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day he 11th day of the 11th month marks the end of the First world war, and 2018 in particular commemorated 100 years since the brutal combat came to an end.

To celebrate such a special occasion, Boavista Golf & Spa Resort hosted its annual Poppy Day Memorial Trophy on november 10, in partnership with the Portuguese branches of the Royal British Legion and Cruz Vermelha (Red Cross).

The day’s events began early in the morning with the traditional golf tournament — each hole having been specially dedicated to a war hero. The winning team comprised Barry whittles, Dave Staniforth, Adam Staniforth and Shaun Greasley. Esther Baker and Fergus Mackenzie were nearest to the pin while Gill Andrew and Charlie Greenwood had the longest drives. The competition was followed by a special lunch and award ceremony, hosted by Ann Taylor, Boavista’s golf club captain. Tony walton, one of the resort’s longest-standing members, gave an emotional speech honouring those involved in the conflict and told the story of his own family’s connection to the war.

Paying homage was in fact the watchword of the day, with both guests and participants sharing their own personal tales of family members and acquaintances who bravely fought in the Great war. Such was the case of Arthur Sydney hewitt, who served in the British Army in India and First Sergeant Bill Gadsby, who was killed in action, aged just 22. others honoured included illustrious figures from the conflict, such as Albert Ball VC, known as Britain’s greatest aviator thanks to his service in the Royal Flying Corps; John ‘Jack’ Travers Cornwell VC, who passed away from severe injuries at only 16, after heroically sticking to his gun post at the Battle of Jutland; noel Godfrey Chavasse VC, who led dangerous rescue and recovery missions; william Coltman VC, a conscientious objector who became the most highly-decorated noncommissioned officer of the war without ever bearing arms; william Leefe Robinson VC, who took down a Zeppelin airship, the world’s first long-range bomber; and many more.

The event raised around €3,000 for the Portuguese branch of the Royal British Legion and Cruz Vermelha. 쐽

Para sempre na memória O Boavista assinalou o centésimo aniversário do Dia do Armistício décimo primeiro dia, do décimo primeiro mês marca o fim da Primeira Guerra Mundial, e em 2018, foram comemorados os 100 anos após o final deste conflito. Por forma a celebrar esta ocasião tão especial, o Boavista Golf & Spa Resort organizou uma vez mais o Poppy Day Memorial Trophy, no dia 10 de novembro, em parceria com as filiais portuguesas da Royal British Legion (associação dedicada ao apoio de veteranos e militares ativos e das suas famílias) e a Cruz vermelha.

O dia começou bem cedo com o tradicional torneio de golfe, mas, em honra do acontecimento, cada um dos buracos prestou simbolicamente homenagem a diferentes heróis que participaram na guerra. A equipa vencedora do torneio foi Barry Whittles, Dave Staniforth, Adam Staniforth e Shaun Greasley. se uma cerimónia especial, logo após o almoço, onde se procedeu também à entrega de prémios, pelas mãos daquela que foi uma das figuras mais ativas na organização do torneio, Ann Taylor, capitã do clube de golfe do Boavista.

Tony Walton, um dos membros mais antigos do resort, prestou um discurso emotivo em homenagem aos envolvidos no conflito e partilhou a sua história, e de como a sua própria família se viu envolvida nesta guerra.

Prestar homenagem foi, na verdade, o objetivo na ordem do dia, uma vez que tanto os convidados como os participantes acabaram por reviver as suas histórias diretamente relacionadas com o conflito, quer através de familiares, quer conhecidos, que participaram corajosamente na Grande Guerra.

Foi o caso de Arthur Sydney Hewitt, que serviu no exército britânico na Índia, ou do Sargento-chefe Bill Gadsby, morto em combate com apenas 22 anos.

Foram ainda homenageadas outras ilustres figuras que participaram nesta guerra, como Albert Ball Cv (Cruz de vitória, a maior condecoração militar concedida pelos países da Commonwealth por feitos de coragem), conhecido enquanto o maior aviador da GrãBretanha, graças ao serviço prestado na Royal Flying Corps, a força aérea britânica destacada durante este conflito; John «Jack» Travers Cornwell Cv, que faleceu devido a graves ferimentos com a tenra idade de 16 anos depois se manter heroicamente no seu posto durante a Batalha de Jutland; noel Godfrey Chavasse Cv, que liderou missões de busca e resgate em terrenos perigosos; William Coltman Cv, um objetor de consciência que se tornou no oficial não-comissionado mais condecorado da Guerra, sem nunca ter recorrido a armas; William Leefe Robinson Cv, que conseguiu a proeza de derrubar um Zeppelin, o primeiro bombardeiro de longo alcance do mundo; entre muitos outros.

Este evento angariou cerca de 3 mil euros, valor esse que reverteu a favor da Royal British Legion em Portugal e da Cruz vermelha. 쐽

The Rules of the Course As Regras do Campo The surest way of using the rules of golf to your advantage is to know them. higher marks on knowledge of the rules can mean lower scores on the course. Test yourself with these eight scenarios.

1. After posting his score, a player realises that his bag contained 15 clubs, one more than the permitted 14, and immediately reports the breach. What is the penalty?

Disqualification.

6. A player loses sight of his ball and decides to play a provisional ball. What is his correct announcement before hitting it from the tee?

“I’m hitting another ball because I might not find that one.”

2. In a stroke play competition, when a shot to the green finds rough, and the ball is not found within the time allowed, what should a player do?

Under penalty of one stroke, drop another ball in the rough.

Under penalty of one stroke, play as near as possible to where the original ball was last played.

7. During match play, a golfer plays out of turn. Which of the following options is his opponent entitled to claim?

They win the hole.

They ask him to play the shot again, from as near as possible to where the original ball was played, without penalty.

5. On the teeing ground, a player sets his ball on the tee.

New leader Boavista’s ambitious new golf director wants to make the course even more attractive and internationally recognised ugo Pinheiro has arrived as the resort’s new golf director to further strengthen the Boavista team. with an easy smile, the 38-year-old speaks passionately, and with a special twinkle in his eyes, about his ambitions for the new challenge he has embraced. originally from Leiria, in central Portugal, Pinheiro has been in charge of the resort’s course for only a few months, packing his bags and moving with his family to “seize a long-term project”. here, he shares his experience so far in managing one of the Algarve’s busiest golf courses. with a degree in sports management and a post-graduate diploma in golf course management, he also has 15 years completely dedicated to the world of golf under his belt. his

O interesse e deslumbramento por este desporto é, portanto, um amor de longa data, pois sempre teve a certeza de que o seu futuro passaria, inevitavelmente, pelos campos ondulantes.

Colaborou com o Lisbon Sports Club em Belas, o Bom Sucesso em Óbidos, e, antes de se lançar no desafio de gerir o campo de golfe do Boavista, foi o diretor de golfe do Penha Longa, em Sintra, durante os últimos quatro anos. Colaborou ainda com a Federação Portuguesa de Golfe e uma agência de golfe. Tem experiência em todas as áreas de golfe, e defende que «para se poder gerir um campo de golfe há que saber fazer tudo». interest in this sport is clearly a long-time passion, having always believed his future would inevitably be spent among rippling fairways.

Pinheiro worked at Lisbon Sports Club in Belas, Bom Sucesso Resort in Óbidos, and, before venturing into the challenge of managing Boavista’s course, was golf director at Sintra’s Penha Longa Resort for the last four years. he has also worked with the Portuguese Golf Federation and a golf agency. Experienced in every area of the sport, he believes that “in order to manage a course, one needs to know how to do everything”. It is thanks to this vast understanding that he feels comfortable managing a multifaceted team at the Algarve resort.

In the Algarve, “golf is approached in a different way”, says the new director. “In cities like Lisbon, which is very fashionable, most tourists aren’t aimed towards golf. That is why I feel there is an ever-growing lack of investment in the sector, which is in decline in that area,” states Pinheiro. “In the Algarve, however, even though we have the ‘sun and beach’ factor, there is an unrivalled investment in golf all year round. here, this is the top sport and it’s exactly where I wanted to be,” he concludes.

Following his arrival, Pinheiro made an initial assessment of what the resort has to offer, and he was very pleased to find he had joined “a well-established project that works wonderfully”.

Therefore, his objective for golf at Boavista involves “maintaining existing strategy”, but also trying to attract new clients, boosting the brand’s online presence and investing in the improvement and quality of all procedures and customer services. he is also keen to improve the resort’s recognition elsewhere: “I would like for us to be featured in the specialties’ rankings. why not work to be among the top European resorts and golf courses?” Pinheiro also highlights the fact that the Boavista course is very dynamic, adding “there is a generous programme of tournaments, competitions and other events on this course, and we intend to continue that”.

As for the actual course at Boavista, he reveals that one of the characteristics he enjoys most is that “it isn’t flat terrain”, unlike many courses in the Algarve. “I love undulating courses, where you have to think about the next shot. They are more challenging and require more mental strategy,” he explains.

“Besides, it’s quite spread out and fits in very well throughout the whole resort.” Finally, the new director reveals that one of the aspects that most impressed him about Boavista was the constant movement: “From full-time residents to tourists, golfers, spa and gym enthusiasts, sports lovers, restaurant customers, it’s a very lively resort!” 쐽

Algarve «trabalha-se o golfe de uma maneira diferente», diz o novo diretor. «Em cidades como Lisboa, que está muito na moda, a maioria dos turistas não é direcionada para a prática de golfe. Sinto, por isso, que existe cada vez mais um maior desinvestimento no setor, que está em declínio naquela zona. Já no Algarve, apesar de existir o produto “sol e praia”, é feita uma aposta inigualável no golfe durante todo o ano. Aqui, este é o desporto-rei e era num lugar assim que queria estar», conclui.

Após a sua chegada, Hugo Pinheiro realizou uma avaliação inicial à oferta do resort, e ficou muito satisfeito após ter constatado que integrou «um projeto bem estabelecido e a funcionar muito bem». Por isso, o objetivo para o golfe no Boavista passa por «manter a estratégia já iniciada», mas também por tentar atrair novos clientes, reforçar a presença da marca online, e investir no melhoramento e qualidade de todos os processos e serviços de atendimento ao público. As suas ambições passam também por uma aposta no reconhecimento do resort no exterior: «Gostaria de estar presente em rankings das especialidades. Porque não trabalhar para estar nos tops dos resorts e dos campos de golfe da Europa?», questiona. O diretor evidencia ainda o facto de o campo de golfe do Boavista ser muito dinâmico. «Existe uma programação muito recheada de torneios, competições e outros eventos neste campo de golfe, e são para manter», acredita o diretor.

Relativamente ao jogo no campo do Boavista, confidencia que uma das caraterísticas que mais o agrada é o facto de «não ser um terreno plano», ao contrário de muitos campos do Algarve. «Sou amante dos campos ondulados, onde é preciso pensar no shot seguinte. São mais desafiantes. É preciso mais estratégia mental!», explica Hugo. «Além disso, está bastante disperso e muito bem enquadrado ao longo de toda a Quinta da Boavista.» Por fim, o novo diretor revela que um dos aspetos que mais o impressionou no resort foi o movimento constante.

«Desde os residentes que aqui vivem a tempo inteiro, aos turistas, golfistas, frequentadores do spa e ginásio, desportistas, clientes do restaurante... Em suma, é verdadeiramente um resort com vida!». 쐽

Homecoming Boavista recovers a piece of its history hen occasional golfer Les wise called into the Marie Curie Charity Shop in Potters Bar, London, he could not imagine the sequence of events that his visit would trigger.

Staff at the shop had recently received three sets of golf clubs and, as none of them were golfers, they didn’t know what to do with them. knowing Les was probably more familiar with the clubs, they asked for his assistance. he duly obliged and sorted the various clubs into sets, placed them in the three bags in which they had been delivered, and suggested that they were put on sale at £25 a set. one putter, though, attracted Les's attention. It had been engraved with the Boavista Golf logo and the words “Presented to Sir henry Cooper on the 20th May 2002”. his curiosity was aroused so he bought the club. As Les owns a property in the Algarve, he knew the Boavista golf course and wondered if they might be interested in its return. Consequently, he sent an email to the resort, advising them that the club was to be put on sale on eBay. The email ended up with Tony walton, a long-time staff member at Boavista, who was around in the early days when the club was presented to British heavyweight boxer Sir henry by Peter Jones, the Chairman of the Emerson Group, owners of the Boavista development.

Tony and Boavista managing director Phillip Pope discussed the possibility of buying back the putter and bringing it “home”.

Os funcionários da loja tinham recebido recentemente três conjuntos de tacos de golfe, mas, como nenhum era praticante, não sabiam exatamente como avaliá-los. Contudo, sabiam que Les os poderia ajudar. O golfista acabou por classificar e agrupar os vários tacos, e sugeriu que cada conjunto fosse vendido pelo valor de 25 libras (aproximadamente 28 euros). no entanto, um putter em especial atraiu a atenção de Les. Este tinha sido gravado com o logótipo do campo de golfe do Boavista, acompanhado da seguinte inscrição: «Oferecido a Sir Henry Cooper a 20 de maio de 2002». Curioso, decidiu adquirir aquele taco. Como Les possui casa no Algarve, e conhece o campo de golfe do Boavista, questionou-se se o resort estaria interessado em reavê-lo. Sir Henry Cooper: um alegre pugilista inglês O Boavista manteve uma relação próxima com a associação Sir Henry Cooper Classic Charity desde 2002, ano inaugural do seu campo de golfe, até 2009, data da última edição do torneio Sir Henry & Mike Reed Golf Classic.

Henry Cooper era um dos atletas de maior renome na Grã-Bretanha, não apenas pelo famoso confronto em ringue com Mohammed Ali, mas amplamente estimado e respeitado um pouco por todo o mundo. Apesar de não ser conhecido enquanto contador de piadas, gostava de recontar episódios e experiências divertidas. A Boa Vista recorda uma das suas partilhas mais engraçadas: Um dia, Cooper estava a conduzir na companhia do seu irmão gémeo, George, e do seu empresário, Jim Wicks, três homens de grande estatura, quando um ciclista guinou a bicicleta na frente do carro.

Henry Cooper travou a tempo, mas, ainda assim, o ciclista caiu da bicicleta. O pugilista parou o carro, baixou a janela para perguntar se ele estava bem, mas foi surpreendido com uma chapada na cara! Em estado de choque, os três homens saltaram do carro para confrontar o pequeno ciclista de metro e meio de altura. Este respondeu de forma corajosa: «Ah! São três?! Então... qual de vocês será o primeiro?». Escusado será dizer que os três não conseguiram conter o riso.

to purchase it on behalf of the company. A complete novice to eBay, he struggled at first with the process, but advice from a friend who was a frequent eBay user paid off handsomely, and the club was finally acquired with just seconds left of the sale.

Les wise subsequently made contact with Tony and arranged to deliver the putter himself on his next trip to Portugal. And so, 10 years later, the putter will be given a special place in the clubhouse as a memento of the early days at Boavista, when the Sir henry Cooper Charity Golf Classic became a regular event until its final year in 2008.

There was, however, a final twist to the tale as related by Les. Apparently, some weeks after his visit to the charity shop, he called in again and asked if they had been able to sell the sets of clubs he had made up for them. The answer was yes, all three sets had sold very quickly, but strangely, shortly afterwards, the gentleman who had donated them in the first place went into the shop and asked if he could buy them back. he was very disappointed when he learned they had all been sold. So why would he want to buy back three sets of second-hand golf clubs? well, all of the sets were left-handed, and so was Sir henry Cooper. were they all Sir henry’s? we will never know… but you can reach your own conclusion! 쐽

Sir henry Cooper: a cheerful British heavyweight boxer Boavista has been involved with the Sir Henry Cooper Classic Charity event since 2002, its course’s inaugural year, to the last Sir Henry & Mike Reed Golf Classic in 2009.

Sir Henry was one of Britain’s greatest sportsmen, not only renowned for his fight with Mohammed Ali, but also loved and respected throughout. He was not really a joke teller, but he would often relate anecdotes or experiences. One of Boa Vista's favourite was this: He was once out driving with his identical twin brother, George, and his manager, Jim Wicks, all of a formidable size. When a fitter on a bike swerved in front of them, Sir Henry braked but, nonetheless, the cyclist fell off the bike. Stopping the car, Sir Henry wound down the window to ask if he was all right, but to his surprise the man slapped Sir Henry around the face! In shock, the three men jumped out of the car to confront the five-foot-nothing little guy, to whom he bravely said: "There are three of you, which one is first?” causing them all to break out in laughter.

Tony e Phillip Pope, diretor geral do Boavista Resort, discutiram a possibilidade de adquirir o putter, e ambos chegaram à conclusão que era uma boa ideia. Tony recebeu assim a tarefa de tentar comprá-lo em nome do empreendimento – um processo complexo para alguém relativamente inexperiente em adquirir objetos através do eBay. Apesar de algumas complicações iniciais, os conselhos de um amigo mais experiente em compras online deram resultado, e o taco foi adquirido com sucesso, a apenas alguns segundos do encerramento do leilão online.

Les Wise agilizou então com Tony a entrega do putter durante a sua próxima viagem a Portugal. E assim, dez anos depois, o taco terá um lugar especial no resort e será recordado como uma lembrança dos primórdios da história do Boavista Golf & Spa Resort, quando o torneio Sir Henry Cooper Charity Golf Classic se tornou um evento regular, até à sua última edição em 2008. no entanto, na reta final desta história houve uma reviravolta. Aparentemente, algumas semanas depois da visita de Les à loja de caridade, este contactou o estabelecimento e perguntou se, por acaso, os restantes conjuntos de tacos que tinham chegado com este putter já tinham sido vendidos. A resposta foi afirmativa, os três conjuntos tinham sido rapidamente vendidos. Curiosamente, pouco tempo depois, o doador inicial entrou na loja e perguntou se poderia comprá-los de volta, e ficou extremamente desapontado quando percebeu que todos já haviam sido vendidos. Fica a questão: porque quereria ele comprar de volta os três conjuntos de tacos? Bem, a verdade é que todos eles tinham sido talhados para jogadores canhotos, assim como Henry Cooper. Seriam estes os tacos originais do mítico pugilista? nunca saberemos com certeza, mas podemos imaginar... 쐽

A healthy birthday Essential Fitness & Spa celebrates a decade of success ctober 5, 2018, was destined to be a special day. After all, 10 years ago, the Essential Fitness & Spa opened its doors for the first time at Boavista Golf & Spa Resort. To celebrate its 10th anniversary, the resort organised a morning filled with healthy and charitable physical activities, with the overall €515 of funds raised being donated to nelma, a young Lagos woman suffering from a serious illness.

The health Club was the 9am meeting point and the lobby quickly filled with around 100 people keen to participate in one of two alternatives: an 8km walk through some stunning Lagos landscapes or a challenging 12km trail run.

Senior golfer Jayne Milliner proved to be a source of inspiration and a role model to all, having been one of the few participants with a brilliant trail performance.

To replenish themselves, visitors enjoyed a buffet lunch at the Clubhouse Restaurant. The event ended after an emotional speech from 82-year-old Tom white, one of the oldest and most cherished members of the Essential Fitness & Spa. 쐽

Afinal, há 10 anos abriu portas pela primeira vez o Essential Fitness & Spa do Boavista Golf & Spa Resort. Foi precisamente no âmbito das comemorações do seu 10.º aniversário que o resort decidiu proporcionar uma manhã repleta de atividades físicas saudáveis e solidárias, cujas receitas reverteram a favor de nelma, uma jovem lacobrigense afetada por uma grave doença.

O Health Club foi o ponto de encontro, pelas 9 horas, e o seu átrio rapidamente se encheu com as cerca de 100 pessoas que não quiseram perder a oportunidade de participar no evento, através de uma de duas vertentes: uma caminhada de 8 quilómetros por deslumbrantes paisagens de Lagos, ou em alternativa, um desafiante trail run de 12 quilómetros.

A golfista sénior Jayne Milliner revelou-se uma inspiração e exemplo de resiliência para todos ao ser uma das poucas participantes a conseguir uma brilhante prestação durante o trail. Para restabelecer forças, seguiu-se um almoço buffet no restaurante do Clubhouse. no total, ao longo do evento foram angariados 515 euros que reverteram na sua totalidade a favor da jovem.

O evento foi dado como concluído apenas após o emocionante discurso de Tom White, 82 anos, um dos membros mais antigos e estimados do Essential Fitness & Spa. 쐽

wondrous Reiki A relaxing holistic therapy oavista resort has offered Reiki sessions since opening the Essential Fitness & Spa, in 2008. There are currently two therapists qualified to conduct these treatments, one of whom is a Reiki master and has been practising for over 10 years.

According to the therapists, Reiki is “an ancient healing system whereby therapists use their hands to direct the Universe’s energy into the physical body of those who need it, stimulating the person’s healing ability and helping them replenish and rebalance the body’s own energy. It’s an ancient healing art with roots in Tibetan Buddhism.” It can be applied to “anyone, regardless of age or physical condition, and even to plants or animals”. however, those seeking this holistic therapy at Boavista are mainly women, who are 50 years old or above, and who come in regularly as they find “the treatment to be extremely relaxing”. Reiki is helpful in “treating many illnesses or physical and emotional issues”. For example, people suffering from “insomnia, nervous breakdowns or emotional disorders […] feel very invigorated and balanced” after a session.

During Boavista’s Reiki treatment, clients lie on a massage table in comfortable clothes, while the therapist channels energy through her hands in several energy spots on the body (chakras), without touching, to stabilise physical, emotional and spiritual health. “It’s a state of complete relaxation, which often leads people to fall into a deep sleep,” explain the therapists.

wearing history The traditional Algarve bioco is back in fashion traditional Algarve garment from the 17th century, the bioco was used by women of all social levels to disguise their identity. Similar to the burqa, this attire consisted of a cape worn from head to toe, usually black, leaving only the eyes uncovered.

Since it concealed the identity of those who wore it, the bioco represented a form of female freedom and independence, allowing women to circulate freely. however, the governor of the Algarve banned it in 1892, and over time it fell into oblivion.

At least until 48-year-old Lurdes Silva, a university professor and lover of local culture and tradition, visited the Museu do Traje (costume museum) in São Brás de Alportel, and rediscovered this garment and its intriguing history.

“I tried on an original bioco and fell in love,” she recalls.

“It was bold attire.” The history behind the piece fascinated her so much that she decided to create the Bioco Tradition clothing brand. She developed three bioco models: Mystery, Passion and Tradition, the latter being more classic. 왘

The new biocos are made entirely in Portugal and are available in both winter and summer varieties. They are made from materials including wool, cotton, georgette and velvet and come in different colours and patterns. Some models are even waterproof and all pieces have yet another touch of originality: the history of the bioco, written into the lining in both Portuguese and English.

Lagos Cultural Centre is the most significant concert hall in the district

O Centro Cultural de Lagos é a mais importante sala de espetáculos do município

rom theatre to dance, music to cinema, specialised conferences to painting, sculpting and ceramics... all these, and many other forms of art and culture, have taken shape at Lagos Cultural Centre during the past 26 years.

The venue, in the heart of the town’s historical centre, has over the years “established itself as a dynamic hub for the creation and diffusion of regional, national and international arts, projecting fresh ideas and interpretations on life and reality, and offering new experiences and emotions through different art forms”. So says José Viegas, lead coordinator of the Technical Unit for Communication, Culture and Tourism at Lagos council, and head of the organisation.

Lagos Cultural Centre has three temporary exhibition rooms and two events’ rooms, as well as a 300-seater auditorium for medium-scale performances, an outdoor patio and a café.

Between 2014 and 2017 the building underwent extensive renovations, receiving new technical resources to improve conditions for cultural agents and increase audience comfort levels. 왘

A project brought to life by the people of Lagos Lagos Cultural Centre was born from a project initially conceived by the 1º Maio Lagos Philharmonic Society. In the 1970s, the town lacked a cultural home that encouraged initiatives, while being a centre for promoting and disseminating culture. It was a gap the local community wanted to address, given the growing social and cultural dynamic in the town. So, Lagos council led this project from 1976 until the end of building works in 1989. The centre will celebrate its 27th anniversary on October 24 2019.

Viegas also mentions that “Lagos has the largest English community in the region, who frequently visit the centre and are very passionate about music. For example, they attend every classical music concert.” he adds that remaining audiences consist of national residents aged between 35 and 45, who attend all types of events, as well as a senior audience "who really enjoy this space, and for whom a show is also a way of socialising and interacting with others”. Viegas also points out that there are a lot of performances that promote interaction between generations: “our Cultural Centre allows for this meeting between generations and the sharing of experiences. with our programme, we look to capture different audiences such as schools and families.”

The council is also open to new cultural propositions, and encourages new artists or agents to suggest spontaneous cultural initiatives. “we offer all residents, national or foreign, the necessary means to submit and develop their own ideas.” 쐽

um projeto ambicionado pela população de Lagos O Centro Cultural de Lagos teve na sua génese num projeto inicialmente pensado pela Sociedade Filarmónica Lacobrigense 1.º de Maio. Durante a década de 1970, verificava-se em Lagos a necessidade da existência de uma casa da cultura ou um centro cultural que fomentasse iniciativas e que se constituísse enquanto polo de dinamização e divulgação cultural. Esta era uma lacuna que os lacobrigenses queriam ver colmatada, dada a crescente dinâmica associativa e cultural vivida na cidade.

Desta forma, a Câmara Municipal de Lagos liderou este projeto desde 1976 até à data de conclusão da obra, em 1989. O centro completa 27 anos de existência a 24 de outubro de 2019.

Desenhar o mundo Lagos e o Algarve pelo olhar atento dos Urban Sketchers Algarve eúnem-se uma vez por mês e prestam tributo às mais bonitas paisagens algarvias. Os urban Sketchers Algarve são formados por um perspicaz coletivo de autores que não recusam um bom desafio e recriam nos seus diários gráficos, in loco, as gentes e a região.

O movimento internacional urban Sketchers teve a sua génese em 2007, em Seattle, nos Estados unidos da América.

A ideia partiu do jornalista e ilustrador americano Gabriel Campanario com o objetivo criar um fórum online dedicado a desenhadores urbanos. A sua ideia evoluiu e tornou-se numa organização sem fins lucrativos que se espalhou por todo o mundo. no entanto, apesar de cada polo ter uma organização regional e independente, há um paradigma que os une: todos se regem por um manifesto composto por oito ideias chave (ver caixa). no sul de Portugal, o grupo urban Sketchers Algarve foi formado em 2014, com o intuito de divulgar e expandir a prática do desenho em cadernos (diários gráficos) na região, à semelhança do que já acontecia noutras localidades do país. O primeiro encontro aconteceu em Faro, em janeiro de 2015.

«Sugeri ao Hélio Boto a localização para realizarmos o nosso primeiro encontro, e, desde então, tenho estado sempre envolvido, assim como outros desenhadores como a Maria de Fátima Santos, Guy Moll, Alfredo Mesquita, Paula Martinho e BJ Boulter, que se tornaram presença assídua nos encontros», explica João Pinto, coordenador do grupo no Algarve.

Vintage art Local artist creates wonderful digital illustrations inspired

by Lagos

Arte vintage he first illustration was born from an unassuming experience, in early 2018. It was a postcard, and the feedback was so positive that it resulted in an entire collection of unique souvenirs inspired by Lagos. Gabriela Eufrásio, 49, was born in Germany but has lived in Lagos since she was 12 and is the creative designer behind this collection, which immortalises the town through vintage style.

The artist signs her works with the pseudonym “mafarrica”, a colloquial Portuguese word for a devilish, playful person. And that is exactly how she feels when embodying this “free-spirited character”. with a degree in communication design, Gabriela was already a keen oil painter when she realised Lagos souvenirs lacked a touch of creativity. The idea of linking art to her field of expertise and the passion she feels for the town gained even more momentum when she saw the lack of original and quality gifts in Lagos. “I wanted to create something that was more creative and bold, with a unique design,” she says. her aspiration resulted in the first collection of postcards, posters and notebooks which, above all, pay homage to the town she loves.

Available at local outlets, these digital illustrations, created from the artist’s own photos, have been a great success, flying off shop shelves. “They are never faithful reproductions, but I use the photos as guidance, from which I can work with light and colour aspects,” explains Gabriela. “I have always wanted to create something of my own and, after studying the market, I quickly realised this type of unique product was lacking and had all the makings of success.”

This first vintage collection is mainly inspired by large and small lighthouses, storks, the iconic local statue of Prince henry, the Saint Sebastian Church tower, and many other Lagos landscapes. The postcards cost €2, notebooks €10 and A2 posters €27.

Era um postal, e a receção foi tão positiva que daí resultou uma coleção inteira de souvenirs originais inspirados na cidade de Lagos. Gabriela Eufrásio, 49 anos, nascida na Alemanha mas residente em Lagos desde os 12 anos, é a criativa por detrás desta coleção que imortaliza a cidade através do estilo vintage.

According to Gabriela, future plans inevitably involve expanding the brand, both within the market and the product range. “I would like to take Mafarrica to other regions in the Algarve and even to the Portuguese capital, Lisbon,” she reveals.

“I want to create a postcard for each district in the Algarve, recreating iconic buildings or landscapes.” Soon, the range will also include other items such as T-shirts, shopping bags, wallets, keyrings, “and an entire collection featuring stationery and merchandising”.

The designer is currently preparing a new collection, which should be launched early in the year.

Henrique, na torre da Igreja de S. Sebastião, e em diversas outras paisagens de Lagos. Os postais têm um custo de 2 euros, os cadernos 10 euros, e os pósteres em tamanho A2 acarretam um custo de 27 euros.

Outro dos serviços disponibilizados pela designer é a criação de ilustrações exclusivas para lojas ou empresas. «Posso providenciar um serviço personalizado para cada cliente, criando ilustrações à medida, de acordo com as necessidades e interesses do comprador.» Será precisamente este o caso do Boavista Golf & Spa Resort, que se encontra a desenvolver em colaboração com a designer uma coleção de postais com ilustrações exclusivas do resort, que será disponibilizada para venda ao cliente.

De acordo com Gabriela Eufrásio, o futuro passará inevitavelmente pela expansão da marca, quer em termos de mercado como de produtos. «A Mafarrica gostaria de entrar para outros concelhos da região do Algarve e até para a capital de Portugal, em Lisboa«, revela. «Tenho em mente criar um postal para cada concelho algarvio, recriando edifícios ou paisagens icónicas.» Também em breve, a gama de produtos deverá evoluir para outros itens como t-shirts, sacos de compras, carteiras, porta-chaves, «e toda uma coleção que envolva estacionário e merchandising».

here is a long tradition of pottery in the Algarve. It is easy to find good examples of pottery along the region’s coastline, but there are areas that inevitably stand out. In Lagos, for instance, the Algarvean chimneys are still being reproduced, alongside typical roof tiles, alcatruzes (ancient water buckets) vases, jars, dishes and pots. But the small village of Porches is considered the Algarve’s pottery capital. It is precisely here that you can find one of the oldest and most renowned potteries in the region. Every tourist guide includes a stop off at olaria Algarve, better known as Porches Pottery.

The story goes back to 1968, when Irishman Patrick Swift founded the first pottery shop in Porches. Swift discovered the region in the 1960s, fell in love with its charisma, and quickly upped sticks to move here with his wife and two daughters. The art of pottery was in decline then and intricate earthenware was being replaced by plastic and metal, which were massproduced and very cheap.

Swift decided he wanted to save this traditional art and, coincidentally, met artist Lima de Freitas, who shared his passion for regional pottery. Together they undertook extensive research, speaking to the old masters who had dedicated their lives to the craft. They even visited museums in Portugal and abroad, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, in London, which houses the largest collection of decorative arts and design in the world. 왘

Mas no concelho de Lagoa, a pequena vila de Porches é considerada a capital algarvia da olaria. É precisamente aqui que encontramos um dos mais antigos e famosos estabelecimentos da região dedicados a esta arte. não existe nenhum guia turístico que não inclua uma paragem obrigatória na Olaria Algarve, mais conhecida como Porches Pottery.

A história remonta a 1968, quando o irlandês Patrick Swift fundou a primeira loja de olaria em Porches. Swift descobriu a região na década de 60 e apaixonou-se pelo carisma da vila, decidindo mudar-se de armas e bagagens com a mulher e duas filhas. na época, a olaria estava em franco declínio. A complexa arte oleira era substituída, com cada vez mais frequência, por materiais como plástico e o metal, os quais eram produzidos em massa, a preços muitos mais baixos.

Swift decidiu que era urgente salvar esta arte milenar e, por coincidência, conheceu o artista Lima de Freitas, com quem partilhava a paixão pela olaria regional. Juntos empreenderam uma profunda investigação e processo de recuperação que os levou a falar com antigos artesãos que tinham dedicado a sua 왘

pair eventually opted to use the majolica technique, an ancient practice which is believed to have originated in Persia and was introduced in Europe by the Moors. After the first baking, the clay pieces are coated in a tin-based opaque glaze, creating a white base onto which the decoration is applied.

They are then dipped in a clear glaze, followed by a second baking. This way, the colours and glaze melt together and form a shiny coat, which is also waterproof and resistant.

The motifs created by Swift and Freitas were also inspired by ancient civilisations, such as the imagery of the tree of life, flanked by two birds with open wings, which hails from Iberia.

Both the majolica technique and these themes are still used at olaria Algarve today, where the artisans also draw inspiration from the regional flora and fauna.

Each piece is hand-decorated – a practice that Swift’s daughters, Stella and Juliet, are committed to preserving, protecting their father’s legacy. Swift started them off in the family business at an early age, and they went on to study arts and art history at university. Today, they are in charge of not only managing the company, but also its artistic direction. The sisters have also developed new motifs and patterns, and create their own pieces, mainly panels and azulejos (hand-painted tiles).

And the future of the business is in good hands: around two years ago, Brian Fortune, Juliet’s son, decided to join the team and continue the family’s legacy.

An equally important part of the team are the ‘Marias’, who provide visitors with the opportunity of watching live as they hand-paint each piece. Maria Rosa has been at the shop for 42 years; Maria do Carmo and Maria Manuela for 36; Maria Eulália for 28; and Maria José for 27.

To celebrate the pottery’s 50th anniversary, in September 2018 the family published a book detailing the history of olaria Algarve, from its conception to today.

Após uma primeira cozedura, a peça de cerâmica é submergida num vidrado opaco à base de estanho, criando uma base branca sobre a qual a decoração será aplicada, e posteriormente, mergulhada num vidrado transparente e sujeita a uma segunda cozedura. Desta forma, as cores e a cobertura vitrificada derretem em conjunto, misturando-se e formando uma superfície brilhante, que também é à prova de água e resistente.

Os padrões utilizados por Swift e Freitas foram também eles inspirados nas civilizações milenares, como é o caso da árvore da vida, ladeada por dois pássaros de asas abertas, tradicional da Ibéria. Tanto a técnica majolica como estes temas são utilizados até hoje na Olaria Algarve, cujos artesãos também se inspiram na fauna e flora regionais.

Todas as peças são decoradas à mão – uma prática que as filhas de Swift, Stella e Juliet, se esforçam por preservar, conservando assim o legado do seu pai. Swift fez questão de que as jovens se iniciassem nesta arte ainda em tenra idade e, por isso, na universidade optaram por estudar Artes e História da Arte. Hoje, não só estão no comando da gestão e administração do negócio, mas também da direção artística. As irmãs desenvolveram ainda novos motivos e padrões, e dedicaram-se a criar as suas próprias peças, sobretudo painéis e azulejos pintados à mão. E o negócio de família já tem futuro garantido: há dois anos, também Brian Fortune, filho de Juliet, decidiu juntar-se à equipa e dar seguimento ao legado da família.

Outra parte não menos importante da equipa são as «Marias», que proporcionam aos visitantes a oportunidade de assistir ao vivo à pintura das peças à mão. nly 100 years ago, Lagos was writing local history as a pioneer in the development of the fish-canning industry. In the last century, the main fishing ports in the Algarve were located in Vila Real de Santo António, olhão, Portimão and Lagos, which were also the leading centres for producing and exporting canned goods. Back then, foreign industrialists spearheaded investment in this sector, namely French, Greek, Italian and Spanish, as well as a few Portuguese.

In Lagos, the first factory appeared in 1882 belonging to a major French company, Établissements F. Delory, with headquarters in Lorient, in Brittany, and branches in Setúbal and olhão. In 1908, the town instigated industrialised canning in the Algarve, with 10 established canneries; by 1910, canned fish represented 4.7% of national exports. The massive reputation of Portuguese tinned foods quickly spread, mainly thanks to those produced in the South. 왘

to its geographic location and the abundance of fish and salt, as well as the available fleet and workforce, Lagos became the main producer and exporter of tinned fish in the Algarve, with around 30 factories which, at one point, produced five million tins per year.

Throughout the complex fish-canning process, men were only responsible for crimping: everything else was done by women. They would begin working in the factories at the age of 14, and were summoned by an iconic siren whistle, at any time of day or night, depending on when the fish arrived. The sound generated massive commotion: workers would run to get in factory queues to ensure work for the whole day. Many would even take their small children with them, as they had no one to mind them.

As for Lagos port, records indicate the town had around 32 factories in 1920, but by 1929 that had dwindled to just 19. 왘

advent of tourism in the ‘60s contributed greatly to the decline of the canning industry in Lagos. Another issue that heralded this sector’s demise was the lack of a port with the necessary infrastructures, such as a fishing dock with shelter for ships. Artisanal flavour Unveiling the story of one of the first artisanal beers produced in Portugal ovina was one of the first artisanal beers to be produced and bottled in Portugal, following completely traditional methods. Ever since, the brand has greatly contributed to rewriting the history of this type of beer production in the country.

The idea was born in Porto, the brainchild of Alberto Abreu, an artisanal beer enthusiast who studied the craft for many years, travelling around the world to see close up the production methods out there. For many years Alberto dreamed of creating his own artisanal beer. In 2009, after years of developing his knowledge about the world of European artisanal beers, he decided to make his own brew, along with Arménio Martins, Sovina’s current master brewer.

In 2011, after three years of experiments and many trials, the first Sovina bottles – Amber and helles styles – were finally launched onto the market. Soon after, came India Pale Ale (IPA), Dry Stout

and Trigo. They were such a hit that the company had to abandon production in a small garage for a new, larger space in Porto’s industrial zone. This significantly improved the production and bottling process, which currently reaches 10,000 litres per month (in 33cl & 75cl bottles and 20l & 30l barrels). The brand became so popular that even today it still attracts big investors. This success was precisely what caught the eye of the renowned Esporão group which, in 2018, bought into the artisanal beer label.

Sovina beers are produced using artisanal methods and contain ingredients such as water, malt, hops and yeast, without artificial colouring or preservatives and are naturally carbonated by the yeast. The company strictly follows traditional, enriched and seasoned recipes through a rigorous selection process that monitors all stages of production, from the development of flavours and aromas of the malt and hops to fermentation.

The microbrewery regularly produces six types of beer, with special flavours for more discerning palates – from the strongest, filled with powerful hops and malts, to the lightest, subtle in flavour and aroma.

Besides the usual beers (Amber, helles, IPA, Stout, Trigo and Bock), Sovina also sells seasonal editions inspired by occasions such as Christmas, along with other special brews. Currently, it is one of Portugal’s leading Premium-beer brands, ensuring distribution and representation all over the country.

t is impossible to remain indifferent before the crowd gathering at Meia Praia beach in Lagos, to both watch and take part in an ancient fishing practice. Drawing the attention and sympathy of locals and tourists alike, the xávega tradition involves an artisanal method of manually dragging a trawl net to the sand, relying solely on the force of the sea and human strength.

In Lagos, the practice has remained the same for hundreds of years. At 67 years old, José Glória, known as “Zé Bala”, is the mentor and protector of the last artisanal xávega in the country.

Before dawn breaks, men gradually start arriving. They are occasional fishermen and all are volunteers – some retired, others still active. They come for the conviviality and the challenge of the ocean. The fishing is usually arranged the day before, by word of mouth, if the weather and the sea are favourable. Most of them are already experienced or know what they have to do, but sometimes, new faces show up.

The first task is to use lard to grease the planks of the improvised slipway from where the boat José Fernando will glide into the sea, moved by arm and leg strength alone. It will be even more difficult to bring it back to its resting place on the sand, full of salt water, and to the grinding sound of the old, battered wood. In winter, the fishing is irregular, happening only once a week, when it is calm; in summer, it goes ahead whenever there is “will and people”, states the skipper. 왘

Em Lagos, a operação mantem-se tal e qual como se pratica há centenas de anos. Aos 67 anos, José Glória, conhecido como «Zé Bala», é o mentor e protetor desta última xávega artesanal no país.

Antes do raiar do dia, os homens começam a chegar aos poucos. São pescadores de ocasião, todos eles voluntários, alguns reformados, outros ainda no ativo. vêm pelo convívio e pelo desafio da maresia. A faina é, regra geral, combinada de véspera, boca a boca, se o tempo e o mar estiverem favoráveis.

A maioria já é experiente e sabe o que tem a fazer, mas, por vezes, surgem novas caras.

A primeira tarefa é untar com banha de porco as traves do passadiço improvisado, por onde o barco José Fernando vai deslizar até ao mar, à força de braços e pernas. O mais difícil será trazê-lo de novo para o repouso do areal, já cheio de água salgada, ao som do ranger dos esforços de madeira batida pelo tempo. no inverno, a pesca é irregular, sendo efetuada uma vez por semana, quando há calmaria. no verão, faz-se sempre que haja «vontade e pessoal», afirma o responsável. 왘

The small vessel survived shutdown orders from Brussels and the rise of fibreglass, but even the master himself acknowledges its poor state of conservation. Even extensive restoration may not save it. If he had €10,000, Zé Bala would have a new boat built in wood, at a small shipyard where he has already been given a quote. “I have been offered €40,000 for my licence”, but up to now he has always refused to sell it “so that [traditional xávega art] can survive”. 왘

adversities threaten his dedication to keeping this technique alive. Besides less traditional types of xávega – where tractors are used for the trawl – and the boat’s poor shape, in order to maintain his licence, he must take his catch to the fish market. “I agree, but they demand an excessive amount: €6,300 per year,” he reveals. “Two years ago, I brought a full boat, 1.5 tonnes, in four trips”, in a refrigerated van (not his own), along with the respective delivery slips.

It did not cover the expenses. According to Zé Bala, it is more gratifying to share the harvest with the seagulls or with tourists and onlookers who gather to watch the action, delighted by a spectacle that has long disappeared from Algarve beaches.

The process is completely traditional: the net is cast around 1,000m from land for the benefit of the 16 men who will drag it back to shore. one end of the net stays on the sand and the other goes on the boat. Segundo o mestre, acaba por ser mais gratificante partilhar a colheita com as gaivotas ou oferecer aos turistas e curiosos que se juntam para ver a azáfama, deliciados com um espetáculo há muito desaparecido das praias algarvias.

O processo é inteiramente tradicional: a rede é largada a cerca de 1 000 metros da terra, facilitando assim o trabalho dos 16 homens que a vão puxar do mar para a praia, sendo que uma das pontas desta rede fica no areal e a outra vai no barco. na volta, depois do lance completo, o José Fernando regressa a terra, com muito esforço. Depois de uma hora, a rede chega à orla da rebentação, e com ela um rebuliço prata de escamas e salpicos. Quando o mar é generoso há sardinha, santolas, lulas, raias, bicas e safias. Este «final feliz», em boa verdade, é um novo começo. O começo da partilha entre todos: cada um leva um pouco do peixe que ajudou a apanhar. O fruto do trabalho e esforço em equipa resulta numa distribuição participada e justa, entre todos. Lively market With produce aplenty and a great view over the town, the nearly century-old Lagos Municipal Market is a must t was 9am when we walked into the massive Lagos Municipal Market building on Avenida Marginal. For 95 years this market has served people with the freshest fish and seafood and the most varied horticultural produce on earth. The 20thcentury architecture of the council flagship does not go unnoticed by visitors, with its opening year of 1924, clearly visible on the façade. Renovated in 2004, it currently comprises ground and first floors, as well as a terrace.

catch. Besides fish and seafood, there is also a refrigerated area with a butcher and the Antiquário do Bacalhau, a shop selling diverse Portuguese delicacies. Ana Paulo is in charge of the shop, which has been open for a year and a half, and where salted cod, a staple in national cuisine, is king. “not too long ago, I sold 10kg of bacalhau to an Italian couple,” she says. She also stocks other products, such as regional and national canned goods, honey, olive oil, liqueurs and several spices.

“There is a lot of movement in the market between 7am and noon, but after that there is no point visiting, because there is not a lot to choose from,” assures Ana Paulo. She also mentions that both Portuguese and foreigners visit the market: “Residents and tourists alike come here. we see people from all nationalities.” Looking around, we see an octogenarian at a stall alongside a tall young man with nordic features. The mix of nationalities and ages fills the busy market with a multicultural atmosphere.

Another of the building’s characteristics is its iconic staircase, surrounded by beautiful tiled panels with paintings of animals.

Ana Paulo é a responsável por esta loja aberta no mercado há um ano e meio, e onde o bacalhau seco, tão típico da dieta portuguesa, é o rei. «Ainda há pouco tempo vendi dez quilos de bacalhau a um casal de italianos», diz. Existem ainda outros produtos como conservas regionais e nacionais, mel, azeite, licores e diversas especiarias.

Ana Paulo garante que «o movimento no mercado é uniforme entre as 7 da manhã e o meio dia, mas depois dessa hora, já não vale a pena visitar, pois já não existe tanta escolha». Ainda segundo a vendedora, o mercado é igualmente frequentado por portugueses e estrangeiros: «Tanto os residentes como os turistas nos visitam. Há pessoas de todas as nacionalidades», explica. É um facto que nós próprios constatamos. numa das bancas, admiramos uma senhora octogenária a ser atendida mesmo ao lado de um jovem rapaz alto e com atributos nórdicos. A mistura de nacionalidades e idades confere um ambiente multicultural a este agitado mercado.

Um saboroso tributo ao bacalhau

he Portuguese cannot live without bacalhau (salt-cured codfish). This beloved fish has long been a part of the nation’s cuisine, and it has a very special place at everyone’s table.

There are signs dating back to the 16th century of Portuguese fleets fishing for cod along the coastline of newfoundland (today one of the 10 Canadian provinces) – evidence of the intimate relationship between this fish and the national maritime voyages. Since this is a cold-water fish, at the time, it was preserved in salt to survive the long journey back home, giving origin to the traditional bacalhau. In fact, there is no Portuguese word for ‘fresh codfish’, it is simply referred to as just that.

In homage to this fish, Boavista recently introduced a new dish. Fresh codfish with a bread and herb crust is the latest addition from chef hélder Marreiros to the Clubhouse Restaurant menu. “It’s a very appetising and delicate dish, and the bread, herbs and Portuguese olive oil give it a special flavour,” explains the chef. It is precisely the quality of these products “at the basis [of the dish] that defines its complex flavour”. Desde o século XvI que existem registos de frotas portuguesas que pescavam bacalhau nas costas da Terra nova (hoje, uma das dez províncias do Canadá), pelo que a captura deste peixe aparece, assim, intimamente associada ao apogeu das viagens marítimas nacionais. Sendo este um animal oriundo de águas frias, na época, era conservado em sal por forma a suportar a longa viagem de regresso. É precisamente em homenagem a este peixe, que o Boavista lançou recentemente um novo prato. Intitulado «bacalhau fresco em crosta de pão e ervas», esta é a mais recente adição do chefe Hélder Marreiros ao cardápio do restaurante do Clubhouse. «É um prato muito saboroso e suave, e com um sabor especial conferido pelo pão, ervas e o azeite português», descreve o chefe. É precisamente a alta qualidade destes produtos «na origem [que] define o seu profundo sabor». O bacalhau é ainda acompanhado com uma juliana de legumes e tomate grelhado.

Ingredients: 200g fresh codfish (be sure to ask for ‘fresh cod’ at the fish counter, otherwise you might end up with the traditional salted version) 70g carrots 60g courgette 60g turnip Half a tomato Bread

Ingredientes: 200g Bacalhau fresco 70g cenoura 60g curgete 60g nabo Meio tomate Pão q.b.

Directions Coat the codfish in a touch of olive oil. Roughly crumb your toasted bread and mix with aromatic herbs. Cover the top of the fish with this mixture, to form a crust. Bake in the oven for 20 minutes at 160ºC, or until the bread is golden. Meanwhile, julienne the vegetables and grill the tomato to your liking.

To serve, place the fish on a bed of vegetables and put the juicy tomato on the side. Enjoy!

Sailing away Lagos Sailing Club is one of the most renowned in the country

or 69 years, Lagos Sailing Club has been an ever-present name in the nautical world, especially in dinghy sailing. The club has around 200 active members who meet regularly, mainly at weekends, at the building near Praia da Solaria beach in Lagos, to connect, train and compete. open to anyone aged seven to 80, the nautical activities are interdisciplinary and enjoyed by many generations.

The club mostly fosters dinghy and regatta sailing, recreational fishing (deep-sea, jigging and big game) and spearfishing. In addition, its Training School for Recreational Sailors offers certified boat licence courses for Basic Skipper, Local Skipper, Coastal Skipper and VhF operator and the schedule is packed with classes, activities, training and competitions.

Currently, the club’s sailing school has 40 students, aged seven to 17, in different levels – from beginner to improvement and competition. During bathing season, the school also hosts one-week summer courses for youths or adults wanting to start sailing. on the competition front, they have members challenging in several classes, including optimist, Laser, 420, Snipe, Solo and Moth; for fishing competitors there is deep-sea, jig and big game fishing, as well as spearfishing. The 2019 calendar is already filled with major competitions, such as the 30th Regata dos Portos dos Descobrimentos (a regatta from Palos de la Frontera, Spain, to Lagos), and other world and European championship events including the GC32 (flying catamaran) Racing Tour Lagos Cup and the European Moth Championship. 왘

As práticas náuticas são transversais e apreciadas por diversas gerações, dos 7 aos 80 anos.

O Clube de vela promove sobretudo as modalidades de vela ligeira, vela de cruzeiro, pesca desportiva de mar (nas vertentes de pesca ao fundo, jigging e big game) e pesca submarina. Founded on April 20, 1950, to develop nautical activities in Lagos bay, the Lagos Sailing Club was the birthplace of the famous Optimist class in Portugal. This category originated in Florida, USA, in 1947, and came to Europe in 1971. The same year, the first three Optimist models were built and the first regattas took place.

A fairway to living in paradise Chapter two Janet and John – The Surprise! anet and John bought their dream apartment in Bayview Village within the prestigious Boavista Golf & Spa Resort just three months ago. After two glorious summer weeks enjoying their new home and surroundings, John came back on his own a month later to play golf with his chums.

Landing at Faro International Airport just a few months later, Janet leans into John and says: “It’s strange but I feel as if we are coming home. I’m so excited.” John smiles and takes hold of Janet’s hand as the aircraft comes to a halt. “I’ve also been looking forward to this trip. Although it’s late october, the weather looks good enough for a few rounds of golf.” John waits for the reaction. he has to navigate this situation carefully...

Janet responds, concerned: “I hope you’re not going to make me a golf widow? you can’t keep sending me off to the spa, however nice it was last time!” John smiles and quips: “As if I’d

do that to you. wait and see, I have a surprise in store.” Janet turns to John and snaps: “what surprise? what are you up to?" having picked up the hire car, the journey to western Lagos takes just 50 minutes. John comments on the easy drive, extolling the sparsity of traffic on the coastal motorway. Janet continues to badger him about his surprise. Should he have consulted her first?

As they enter the resort, they both comment about the immaculate presentation of the landscaped gardens and John confirms that their choice of investment location was the correct one. They had viewed apartments all over town and while they liked Lagos, they agreed that Boavista offered the best of all worlds being only a stone’s throw from the town centre.

“I know… you bought that watercolour I liked. The one I thought would look nice over our bed.” Janet was cut off abruptly by John as they waited for the electronic garage gates to slide silently open. “I most certainly did not. Anyway, you just fancied the French artist.”

She perches herself on a stool adjacent to the island unit. “well, tell me,” she demands. “This is a particularly good wine... if you like it I’ll get a few more bottles. It has subtle hints of butter and lemon. what do you think?” John doesn’t wait for an answer before continuing: “where would you like to eat this evening?” “The clubhouse restaurant, of course.” having agreed to play golf with Phillip tomorrow, John wonders if the intensive golf tuition, the set of ladies’ clubs and a pair of pink golf shoes secreted in the storage room will be a welcome surprise. he is now not as confident as he was when all this was arranged ‒ his golfing chums, with humorous and mischievous bonhomie, egging him on after a couple of pints of local beer imbibed in the comfortable surrounds of the clubhouse bar. 쐽

over the nature of the surprise. opening the door to the apartment, Janet forges ahead and starts to open the electric shutters, allowing the early evening sunlight to flood through the picture windows. “Given no one has been here for a couple of months, the apartment doesn’t feel at all musty or cold,” calls out Janet. “That’s because of the excellent build quality. The insulation is very good,” responds John.

“I wish our home in England was as easy and as economical to run. Did you know that the fibre-optic internet, the TV and all our phone calls are included in the condominium fee? we don’t even have to worry about maintenance or up-keep of the building.”

“And don’t forget, the excellent spa facilities,” Janet retorts quickly as she checks out all the rooms and notices nothing different. nothing added, and nothing removed. no obvious surprise here. She slides open the large picture window and surveys the spacious terrace. nothing new there either, but before returning inside she takes a moment to appreciate the glorious view thinking that no artist could improve upon the natural canvas before her: a couple putting on the green

iniciativa 365 Algarve já vai na sua terceira edição, continuando a investir na otimização da experiência turística e atratividade dos municípios da região durante a chamada época baixa, atenuando a sazonalidade através de uma programação cultural de qualidade, construída a partir das propostas do tecido artístico local. nos próximos oito meses, o programa disponibilizará 402 espetáculos, incluindo concertos, peças de teatro e eventos e visitas a património cultural, cruzando áreas como a música, o novo circo, as artes de rua, a dança, o cinema e a literatura.

A oferta cultural totaliza 50 eventos por mês e pretende ser diferenciadora e complementar à já existente, atraindo público às zonas mais periféricas e interiores do Algarve. nos últimos dois anos, o 365 Algarve promoveu 1 151 iniciativas e apoiou 89 projetos, contando com a participação de cerca de 275 mil pessoas, num investimento global de três milhões de euros.
