We are ending the year soon, with new hopes and fresh starts for the new year ahead. On this occasion of exciting renewal, on behalf of all my colleagues at the Golden Pagoda Buddhist Temple Management Committee, I would like to extend my best regards and gratitude to all benevolent supporters and employees, who have been caring and rendering support to the development of the temple!

During this COVID pandemic period, everyone spent almost 90% of their time at home, not by choice, but by the pragmatic health concerns to protect ourselves from contracting COVID. In sentient beings’ life, it is inevitable that there will always be ups and downs.

There will never be sunrise all the time, nor will there be pains and failures for sentient beings forever. Experiencing the ups and downs repeatedly, for sentient beings, is a way of training towards resilience. Medical experts predict co-living with endemic COVID will be a way of life.

There are as many gracious kindness as there are equal generous blessings in a person’s heart; There are as many sufferings as there are equal grievances in a person’s heart. Sentient beings must believe in cause-and-effect; that every effect happens from a cause. It helps if you believe whatever happens now, it is with good cause for the best possible future outcomes to achieving your dreams and life’s goals, by putting you through the vigorous tests. With empathetic appreciation of the nature’s intent, one can draw endless energy to march on. If we look forward for hope, then there is Hope. I wish, in the coming new year, you will reap double happiness with meaningful and happy life, as always.

由于香的芬芳遠闻，经典中也 常用来比喻修行者的持戒之德。 供香散发出来的香云，可让我们 内心虔诚地发愿。祈愿香云能够 供养十方三世一切诸佛菩萨，广大 无边。把供香普薰的香云作意布施 给法界一切众生，让他们得到满足 。供香也是积累资粮的一种方便，经 论中也提到供香代表着行持精进度。

Because of the lasting fragrance, incense is often mentioned in the sutras as a metaphor for the virtue of precepts. The incense cloud emitted from the offered incense inspires us to make a pious inner vow: May the incense cloud be able to provide for all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, reaching furthest and boundaryless; May the incense cloud be offered to all sentient beings in the Dharma realm so that they can be enlightened. Incense offering is also an effective way to accumulate merits, and it is regularly mentioned in the sutras as a measure of the practice progress.

【灯供养】

我们点燃的灯不是一般的油 灯，而是智慧、光明。以此 灯来遣除整个世界的无明黑 暗，遣除自己乃至每一个众生 心灵上的困惑。在《药师经》 中，讲到生病的人，要在佛前 点49盏灯，这个灯可以指引他 的神识走向。尤其是人在往生后 的49天内，都要点灯，是给中阴 身一个方向。

The lamp we light is not an ordinary oil lamp, but the wisdom of light. With this lamp, we expel the ignorance and darkness of the entire world, the perplexity and confusion of ourselves and every sentient beings. In the "Sutra of Medicine Buddha", it is mentioned that a person who is ill should light 49 lamps in front of the Medicine Buddha. The lamps can guide his spiritual consciousness. Especially during the 49 days after death, sentient beings light the lamps to provide them direction, during this stage of ‘Antarābhava’ (Bardo).

【涂供养】 VILE

涂香（梵 vilepana、upalepana）为古印度人的生活习惯之 一。又称涂身或涂妙香。即以 香涂身，以消除体臭或热恼。《 华严经》卷十一载有：增益精气 、令身芳洁、调适漫凉、长其寿 命、颜色光盛、心神悦乐、耳目精 明、 令人强壮、 瞻睹爱敬、具大威 德等十功德。除了一般的香外，经中 也说能止息烦恼者， 以戒德为涂香。

PAN ING FER A OF

Vilepana or Upalepana, is one of the ancient Indian practices by applying incense to the body to eliminate body odour or heat irritations. Chapter 11 of "Avatamsaka Sutra" mentions Vilepana Offering has 10 merits and it can : Gain Vitality; Cleanse The Body; Adapt The Coolness; Promote Longevity; Brighten The Colour of Halos; Maintain Joyful Mind; Increase Alerted Ears and Eyes; Provide Strength, and Health; and Gain Respect. Other than the usual fragrance, the Sutra mentioned Vilepana helps to stop worries and guidance to refrain from disruptive desires.

【果供养】

FRU

IT O FFER ING

在佛教中，果代表结果、圆 满。佛教十分重视因果，万事 万法不离因果。其中，供鲜花 ，代表善因; 供水果，则代表善 果。佛教修行的境界也用果位来 表示，最高的境界就是成就佛果 ，也即是能够“自觉、觉他、觉满 ”。为了提醒自己达到这个圆满的 佛果，佛弟子常把鲜果供在佛前。

In Buddhism, fruit represents result and completion.

Buddhism attaches great importance to Karma (cause and effect), Sentient beings’ action driven by intention (cetanā) which leads to future consequences. Among them, Flower Offering represents good cause, and Fruit Offering represents good effect and consequence. The attainment of highest realm in Buddhism practice is to achieve Buddhahood of “Conscious Awareness of Self, of Others and of Practices" (Fullness of Awareness). As a reminder upon oneself towards achieving this complete Buddhahood, devotees make Fruit Offering to the Buddha.

一花一世界，一树一菩提，一 茶一人生。沏一壶茶，于氤氲 馨香中，品佛之禅理，青灯孤寂 ，明心见性。以茶供佛，希望指 示学佛者，日常生活昏沉不得， 须时时省察自己，检讨自己，每日 举心动念，所做所为是否正确？人 若道理不明，佛理不懂，凡事迷迷 糊糊，就好比一天到晚昏睡不醒，辜 负大好时光，愧对己身。

One flower represents one world; one tree represents one Bodhi (Enlightenment); and one tea represents one life. Make a pot of tea, appreciate the wisdom of truths revealed, cleanse the hearts to see true self, with the Tea Offering to the Buddha. In the daily mundane life cluttered with despairs and frustrations, Buddhists must constantly self-discipline and evaluate every thoughts they raise, are they on the correct path? If a person does not differentiate between truths and lies, understand the Teachings of Buddhism, but live the days without directions and guidance, it will be like falling asleep all day long, betraying oneself and missing out the opportunities to achieve merits.

Food Offering to the Buddha is a sign of respect with profound meaning of helping sustainability towards spiritual practice. As sentient beings, we can’t live without the nourishment of food and supplement of energy. Therefore, Buddhism outlines food as one of the four essential offerings (the other three are clothes, bedding, and decoction).

佛前供珠表示圆融圆满的 意思，象征做事圆满，做 人圆融。《百缘经》中有位 商人，入海采宝，平安归来 ，以摩尼宝珠盖于供养着佛 陀舍利之塔塔顶。以此功德， 九十一劫不堕恶趣，生于天上 人中，常有宝盖随身，最终值 遇佛陀，出家得道。

Bead Offerings to the Buddha signifies perfection and completeness in life. In the " Avadānaśataka Sutra", there was a businessman who ventured at sea and returned safely with treasures. He presented the treasure beads atop the stupa housing the Buddha's relics. With this offering's merits, one can be blessed from falling into ‘Durgati’, during the 91 ‘Kalpas’. He who is born among the ‘Devas’ (Heavenly Beings) and accompanied by treasures, will finally be guided by the Buddha towards Enlightenment (Nirvana).

在佛教中，称“佛、法、僧”为 三宝。佛宝指圆成佛道的本师 释迦牟尼佛；法宝指佛的一切教 法，包括三藏十二部经、八万四 千法门；僧宝指依佛教法如实修 行、弘扬佛法、度化众生的出家沙 门。金银财宝拿出门，处处皆可用 。一个人若有了“信”，于己有信。 对师长、朋友们守信，不欺暗室，无 愧衾影，则人敬如神，待若上宾。

In Buddhism, "Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha" are called the Three Jewels. The ‘Buddha Jewel’ refers to the Buddha Shakyamuni who has attained Enlightenment (Nirvana). The ‘Dharma Jewel’ refers to all Buddhism Teachings including Tripi aka, sutras, and caturāsīti-dhammakkhandha-sahassāni. The ‘Sangha Jewel’ refers to the monks who comply Buddhism practices, according to the Buddhist rules, promote the Dharma, and guide the sentient beings towards Buddhism Teachings. Like treasures which are accepted everywhere, a person with "integrity" will be trustworthy to himself. A person who practises integrity towards his seniors and friends, who has clear conscience and doesn't commit wrong doings, even if he is alone, will gain unreserved respects from people and be treated with honours.

【衣供养】

CLO

即用衣服供养三宝。福田衣 即“袈裟”，佛家谓积善行可 得福报，犹如播种田地，秋获 其实; 又因袭装的形制似田亩 稻畦，故名。衣在此引申着依 靠之意。从事上说，衣服须穿着 在身上，才能显出衣体的好坏。 从理上说，学佛的人，须依佛丶 依佛经丶依靠出家人，照佛指示的 路径去实行，才能得到究竟解脱。

Cloths Offering presented to ‘The Three Jewels’ is better known as monk robes. Buddhism teachings suggest good deeds harvest merits, like farming the seeds in the spring and harvesting the fruits in autumn. Cloths also implies ‘dependence’ as in practice, only worn cloths can demonstrate its quality. Buddhists rely on the guidance of ‘Buddha, Dharma and Sangha’, to follow the path towards Enlightenment (Nirvana).
