Headteacher’s welcome
I am very proud to serve the pupils, parents, staff and the community of Golborne High School as headteacher. I feel very fortunate to work with our pupils every day and see their ambitions for themselves, their pride in their work and their commitment to the Golborne family.
I know that a successful and happy school depends on all of us working together. As parents and carers, you make an important contribution to your children’s achievements, and I’m excited to build on the relationship between you and our school.
Our aim has always been to provide the best possible education for our pupils to enable them to dream big and pursue their ambitions. At the heart of everything we do is our vision to provide an exceptional education to local children.
Before becoming Headteacher, I was Deputy Head at the school starting in 2016 and it has been a privilege to see the school be above National average in key performance measures.
In recent years a particular highlight was the Ofsted report in 2023 which judged us as outstanding in all areas. The report reflected the dedication and commitment of the whole school community to providing the very best opportunities for all our children both within and beyond school. The report recognises the family values that make Golborne so special and the fact that “Pupils and staff care deeply about their community”. Golborne is a thriving hub of the Golborne and Lowton community and is oversubscribed year on year. It is the school of choice in the local area.
It is a pleasure to interact daily with pupils who are polite, enthusiastic, ambitious and most importantly, proud to be a part of the Golborne family. This sense of pride is evident in every aspect of day-to-day life at from the exemplary standards of uniform and behaviour, both inside and outside the classroom, to the extensive participation in a wide range of extra-curricular activities in the community. Our aim is very simple: to ensure that all of our pupils dream, ambitious dreams which we make possible. We are determined to ensure that every child in the Golborne and Lowton community believes they can achieve through the consistently inspirational and challenging quality of teaching and learning delivered within a nurturing and supportive environment.
We have high expectations of our pupils’ behaviour based on a very simple concept, that every child and adult uses good manners at all times, and understands the difference between right and wrong. We have very simple but clear boundaries based on a ‘firm but fair approach’. At Golborne we simply want every pupil to thrive and excel though their love of learning and passion for each subject that they study.
Golborne High School is a learning community where a joy of learning is fostered in every lesson. The expert subject knowledge of our specialist staff, coupled with a culture of constant self-improvement, based on research-led best practice, means that our staff have both an expertise and passion for their subjects. Ofsted praised the “expertise” of staff and their ability to create “highly ambitious” subject curriculums.
We are committed to ensuring that we deliver an ‘exceptional’ education for the children of the Golborne and Lowton community because this is what they deserve. We are committed to delivering the highest academic standards, to allow our students to realise their aspirational goals. This is a target to which every member of the Golborne school community is committed, and it is a target that we will continue to achieve. I am delighted to lead Golborne High School and am determined to ensure that we continue to be a beacon of excellence in the local community in which all of our pupils not only ‘believe they can achieve’ but achieve really highly.
One of the areas of school of which we are most proud of is our fully inclusive culture. Our recent Ofsted inspection praised our students for being “responsible and respectful citizens” who understand “the importance of equality, diversity and tolerance”. At the heart of all we do is ‘The Golborne Way’ which students and staff ‘live out’ through their actions every day. All students are valued, nurtured and cared for.
We reward and celebrate success and enable our pupils to be ‘confident and independent’. We pride ourselves in providing expert support for our SEND children who are fully involved in the wider aspects of school life and thrive within a safe and protective environment.
We are proud of our professional relationship with parents. We know how important your child is to you and we appreciate your support throughout their time at Golborne High School. Communication is at the heart of our positive relationship with parents to ensure that we work together so that your child receives an exceptional education in a warm, protective and nurturing environment.
We look forward to welcoming you into the Golborne family.
Mrs A. Stott Headteacher
Communicating with School
If you need to get in touch with school, please use our email or phone number below. We will always endeavour to get back in you as soon as we can – and within 48 hours.
If your child is absent from school, we politely ask you to notify the school each morning by calling the school phone number and selecting option 1 or by email to ps@golbornehigh.wigan.sch.uk
How we communicate with you
At Golborne High School, we feel it is very important to have a strong three-way partnership between pupils, parents and teachers. The school will communicate with parents/carers through a combination of phone calls, emails and text messages, depending which is most appropriate.
Edulink One:
Edulink One is the application we use to keep you informed about your child. Parents and carers will receive individual login details and can use Edulink One to:
• See your child’s timetable and attendance
• View the homework set for your child, with deadlines
• View your child’s achievement and conduct information
• See what food your child has purchased in school
• Update your contact details
• View key documents
Parent Consultation Evening
Every child has an annual Parent Consultation Evening where parents/carers are invited to meet all your child’s teachers to discuss their progress and attitude to learning in each subject. For these events, we use an online appointment system and we send out all the details of how to access and book appointments in advance of the evening.
Year 7 parents and carers will have the following key events:
• Autumn Term: Introduction and Engagement Evening – 16th October 2025
• Spring Term: Review and Celebration Evening – 27th January 2026
Our staff are always more than happy to speak to you throughout the year, and your child’s tutor, head of year or class teachers can be contacted if you have a query.
Progress Reports
Throughout the academic year you will receive three progress reports, detailing how your child is doing in their subjects. Progress reports provide a ‘snap shot’ of how each child is doing, with progress test scores and attitude to learning grades. They are designed to identify pupils who deserve to be praised for their academic achievement, progress and effort, in addition to showing us where further intervention may be needed to fully support individual pupils.
In the Autumn term of Year 7, baseline assessments will take place in English and Mathematics only, with all other subjects assessed in the Spring and Summer term. Alongside these baseline assessments, Year 7 pupils engage with reading tests and CATs (Cognitive Ability Tests), which provide a well-rounded picture of their starting point.

Attendance Information
At Golborne High School we work hard to ensure that every one of our students reaches their full educational and social potential which is why we strive for excellent attendance with a whole school target of 97%. Every child at Golborne has an attendance target of 100%. We would like to draw your attention to the fact that research shows that pupils who have an attendance below 95% only have a 60% chance of gaining the highest grades at GCSE. Clearly, you as a parent, want your child to achieve the best possible grades therefore we would appreciate your support in ensuring that they attend school. We are aware that occasionally it may be necessary for children to be absent from school, but we do ask for your support in ensuring your child’s regular attendance.
Absence
If your child is unfit to attend school, you must contact Pupil Services daily to advise the reason for the absence. Once your child returns to school an absence note must be handed in to Pupil Services giving the reason for the absence. If, after one week, no note or phone call is received a reminder text is sent home to parents. A week after the text message the absence is changed from ‘unexplained’ to ‘unauthorised’ if we have not received an explanation for the absence. Please note that 10 unauthorised sessions (5 days) could result in you receiving an Educational Penalty Notice Warning which may result in you being fined.
Appointments
Where possible dental appointments, medical appointments should be made out of school hours i.e. school holidays or after school. Please note medical appointments are an ‘authorised absence’ and will affect your child’s overall attendance. If appointments are made during school hours pupils can come in to school and leave at an appropriate time near to the appointment, returning to school afterwards. This will mean that your child will receive attendance marks for both a.m. & p.m. registration. Parents must write a note, which should be handed in at Pupil Services before 8.30am, giving all the details including the name of the person collecting the pupil. Pupils will be given an Exeat to allow them to leave lesson at the time requested. Reception will ask for identification before allowing the pupil to leave school.
Holidays
Parents should be aware that taking holidays at times other than the school holiday dates can be extremely disruptive to pupils' education. This is particularly important for pupils preparing for public examinations. The school will not normally agree to your child missing school for family holidays except in exceptional circumstances.
Attendance certificate
At the end of every term pupils whose attendance is on or above the school target of 97% receive a letter with their attendance certificate printed on the reverse. Pupils who receive a letter will go into a prize draw for gift vouchers and those pupils with 100% attendance & punctuality will be entered into a draw for a Kindle Fire.
100%-98% Attendance meets Golborne High School's expectations
97% attendance meets the school target
96%-90% attendance is monitored
Below 90% Persistent Absentee - monitored by school/local authority level
Additional Information
90% or below:
New Government threshold for ‘persistent absence’ from September 2015
Your child’s attendance is of grave concern
The Enforcement Team may become involved (this could result in prosecution with a fine of up to £2500 and/or 3 months imprisonment)
Your child may have a medical condition which we are aware of and evidence has been provided.
Additional Information
90.1% to 94.9%:
Your child’s attendance is being closely monitored
You should consider contacting school to discuss your child’s attendance
You should take steps to reduce any further absence which could put your child into the red category
Your child may be placed on a Wigan Family Help Framework
Early Help and Prevention / Social care may become involved to work with parents to improve your child’s attendance (this could result in referral to the Enforcement Team).
Education Penalty Notice Warning for Nonschool Attendance
All schools across England have a duty, moral responsibility and are accountable for pupil attendance. This is because, data tells us that pupil chances diminish as a result of poor attendance. Non-attendance at school can also lead to an increased safeguarding risk to pupils. As part of the government’s and LA’s responsibility to ensure good attendance, I am obliged to send this letter to all parents regardless of the current level of attendance of your child, so that you are clear about the law. All pupils will receive this letter irrespective of their level of attendance currently. This simply serves as a reminder to parents of the law under the Education Act. Many thanks for your attention in this matter.
Under the Education Act 1996, parents and carers have a duty to make sure their children regularly attend school. If parents or carers fail to do this, they can be prosecuted.
Working within a Code of Conduct the Local Authority can issue a penalty notice to parents or carers if a child has missed a number of sessions without permission from the school.
If your child falls within one or more of these categories within a 12 week period
• 10 sessions (5 days) of unauthorised absence with under 90% attendance
• 20 sessions (10 days) of unauthorised absence
• Persistently arrives late for school after the close of registration
You could receive a Penalty Notice of £60 which will increase to £120 if not paid within 21 days. The Penalty Notice will need to be paid in full before 28 days of the notice being served. Failure to pay a penalty notice may result in prosecution (a separate penalty notice may be issued to each parent for each child).
In law, an offence is committed if a parent fails to secure a child's regular attendance at school. Wigan Council Attendance Service, in conjunction with schools, will use these powers as an early deterrent to prevent patterns of unauthorised absence developing. You may also receive a Penalty Notice for the offence of failing to secure regular school attendance under the following circumstances:
• Your child is stopped on a truancy sweep
• You fail to ensure that your child is not in a public place during the first 5 days of a fixed term or permanent exclusion.
The Local Authority and schools are committed to providing the best possible future for your child. If you have concerns about your child's attendance at school or if you are experiencing any difficulties, please contact your school and ask for support. At Golborne High School, we promote good attendance and punctuality for all.
Attendance has a direct impact on a child’s progress. Poor attendance has proved to be one of the key reasons for under performance. In school, we have many incentives to
promote excellent attendance. However, due to attendance being one of the key criteria for all trips including our annual trip to Alton Towers. It is important to note that any holidays that have been taken in term time within a year previous to the trip, will prevent a child being eligible.
Punctuality is as important as attendance and there is a clear strategy in place for any child who is late to school after the entrance gates to school are locked at 8:30am. We encourage all children to be on time, first time, every time to school and all their lessons.
Curriculum and the Wider Curriculum
The Year 7 curriculum includes lessons in the National Curriculum subjects of Mathematics, English, Science, History, Geography, Modern Foreign Languages, P.E., Music, Art, Technology and Computing In addition to these, Religious Studies, Drama and Reading are taught as discrete subjects.

Every pupil in Golborne High School has the right to enjoy his/her education free from bullying.
Our school will not tolerate any unkind actions or remarks. Pupils must support each other by reporting all instances of bullying to a member of staff or a prefect.
We consider that any amount of bullying is totally unacceptable; it is the responsibility of each member of the school community to help combat bullying. If bullying does occur, all pupils should be able to tell and know that incidents will be dealt with promptly and effectively. We are a TELLING school. This means that anyone who knows that bullying is happening is expected to tell staff.
Watching bullying and not telling is the same as supporting bullying.
• Bullying is too important not to report.
• Bullying will be dealt with seriously.
• Please see the school website for the school Anti-bullying policy.

Safeguarding, Mental Health and Well-Being Safeguarding
The safeguarding of our pupils underpins everything we do at Golborne High School. To ensure our pupils are able to keep themselves safe we follow the following principles:
Training
All our pupils and staff are fully trained on all aspects of keeping themselves safe from harm such as:
• Physical and emotional abuse
• Sexual abuse and unhealthy relationships
• Child sexual exploitation and criminal exploitation
• At risk of being radicalised.
Reporting
All pupils staff and parents should be aware of the school’s safeguarding reporting procedures. If anyone feels a pupil is at risk of harm they can report to any member of staff.
Our Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) is Mr K. Falconer.
Anyone who is at risk of harm is fully supported by the school. However, additional support can be offered by agencies such as:
• Early Help and Prevention
• Social Care
• Targeted Youth Support
• Targeted Education Support Service
• Educational Psychologist
• School Nurse.

Mental Health
All pupils receive a universal mental health offer through tutor time. This involves a programme of study called dialectic behaviour therapy. This programme focusses on the pupil being able to apply steps to consider which mindset they are in such as their emotional mind or wise mind. This is reinforced often and pupils are given the opportunity to feedback on this through effective pupil voice.
Pupils are given more bespoke age-appropriate information regarding mental health and are asked to complete a mental health questionnaire which helps us to identify any pupils who may be struggling.
Support:
Golborne High School has a dedicated team of support for mental health and well-being. This takes place in our iClass facility and can include but is not limited to:
• Group work
• 1:1 support from a mental health first aider
• Pastoral Support Leaders
• School Counsellor
• CAMHS School link service
• School Nurse
Any concerns regarding mental health should be raised immediately with your child’s Head of Year or the Pastoral Team who will be able to identify the appropriate level of support. More information regarding mental health support can be found on the school’s website including an extensive list of organisations and contact details.
