Students from Golborne High School, Bedford High School, and Byrchall High School teamed up with Everyday Wigan to celebrate the grand opening of the Pennington Flash Nature Trail. The trail showcases 14 striking abstract wildlife sculptures, thoughtfully created by the students in collaboration with Everyday Wigan. The project was funded by Curious Minds as part of the BeeWell initiative, aiming to inspire young people and the wider community to engage with nature, enjoy the outdoors, and support positive wellbeing.
As part of the celebration, students immersed themselves in a variety of mindful, creative activities, including natural texture rubbings, still life drawing, painting with quills, wellness doodling, and an inspiring nature walk to explore the sculptures and connect with the surrounding environment.

In June The Class of 2030 arrived to a warm Golborne Family welcome, beginning their high school journey with a full day of exciting experiences. They got a head start exploring the subjects they’ll be studying in September—conducting experiments in Science, tackling challenges in Maths, discovering new languages in MFL, getting active in PE, and unleashing their creativity in Technology and Art. It was a fantastic day, and we thoroughly enjoyed getting to know you all. We can’t wait to welcome you back in September for your official start!
Members of the school council met with Communications and Engagement Officers from Wigan Council today to discuss communications about local initiatives with young people in our area. The students were a credit to the school and represented their peers' views in the discussion. The student focus groups are part of a wider piece of work Wigan Council has been doing to find out how young people want to be kept informed about our services, activities, events and support.
We're thrilled to share that five of our brilliant Year 8 students qualified for the Junior Kangaroo—a prestigious follow-on round to the UKMT Junior Maths Challenge! This is an incredible achievement and a reflection of their hard work and mathematical talent. A huge congratulations to all who qualified, and a special mention to: Max – Bronze Certificate
Savia – Silver Certificate
Karson and Aevin – Gold Certificates
The Junior Kangaroo is a 60-minute, 25-question multiple-choice challenge, open only to UK schools. Thousands of top scorers from the Junior Maths Challenge (JMC) are invited each year to take part. Run by the UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT), this event connects young mathematicians worldwide with over six million students participating globally!
Huge well done to our U14 boys – who smashed it in June with a 38-0 win over The Deanery in the school final! Back-to-back Wigan school champs! We can’t wait to see this talented group continue to grow and develop as players!
Congratulations to our three Year 7 pupils — George, William, and Mac — who play for Leigh Miners U12s. In June, they faced Leigh East in the semi-final of the cup and delivered a fantastic performance, securing a well-earned victory to qualify for the NWC U12s Cup Final. This was the team's first experience playing in a cup competition, and reaching the final is an outstanding achievement. We’re incredibly proud and wish them the very best of luck for the final.
Year 7 Star Helps Ashton Park JFC
Net Two Titles in Style
Congratulations to Rosie in Year 7, who, along with her football team, Ashton Park JFC U13's Girls, were crowned Bolton and Bury league champions after only losing 1 game out of 18. They also became The Players Cup champions, winning 2-1 in the cup final. An amazing achievement, as this is only their 2nd year playing in a league.
In July, we were delighted to welcome a range of providers from across the region as part of our Path to Post-16 week. Representatives from MBDA, Winstanley College, GMLPN, Murphy Group Construction, Wigan Warriors, GK Training Services, the nhs.uk, and Northstone visited the school to share their expertise and inspire our Year 10 pupils. They offered valuable insights into post-16 pathways and potential career opportunities within their industries.
We’d like to extend our sincere thanks to all those who gave their time to support and give guidance to our pupils to help them make informed choices as they prepare for their final year at Golborne High and beyond.
Congratulations to Year 9 pupil Teddy, who recently delivered an impressive presentation to the NHS Trust Board. His audience included senior leaders such as the Chairman, Chief Executive, Medical Director, Chief Nurse, Chief People Officer, along with other Executive Directors, Non-Executive Board Members, and Governors.
Teddy spoke about a recent personal experience at the Trust’s Paediatric Emergency Department, offering thoughtful reflections on what went well and where improvements could be made. His honest and articulate feedback provided valuable insight—helping the Trust to both celebrate best practice and consider areas for future development.
Remarkably, Teddy is the youngest person ever to present to the Trust Board. His composure, clarity, and confidence earned high praise from members of the Board and even a job offer!
Year 10 Solve Their WaytotheTop!
We are thrilled to announce that our amazing pupils have triumphed as the St John Rigby Sixth Form College Maths Challenge Champions!
Our Year 10 team competed against several local schools, taking on a range of demanding maths puzzles and logic problems—both individually and collaboratively. Their outstanding performance earned them 1st place with an exceptionally high score. The organisers were highly impressed by the calibre of their problem-solving skills and teamwork.
Thank you to everyone who joined us for our annual Celebration of Achievement Ceremony. It was a truly memorable evening, filled with pride and reflection on what has been an outstanding year. This special event honours our highest-achieving pupils across all subjects, and we were thrilled to see many hardworking students receive multiple awards. In addition to academic excellence, we also presented House Awards for Sport, Outstanding Achievement, and Good Citizenship
A highlight of the evening was the presentation of 'The Golborne Way' awards—recognising pupils who consistently go above and beyond, demonstrating the core values of our school. These awards celebrate excellence across the Wider Curriculum, Honesty, Outstanding Behaviour, Love of Learning, Good Manners, Articulation, Reading, Resilience, Tolerance, and pride in wearing the Golborne High School uniform. It was a wonderful opportunity to come together as a school community to celebrate the incredible achievements and talents of our pupils.
Congratulations to all of our award winners.
