Bullying No es cosa de niños, es Mes Nacional de la Prevención del Bullying

Estadísticas a nivel nacional revelan que de un 20% a 30% de los niños ha sufrido de acoso escolar.

“Mamá tengo dolor de estómago”, “me está doliendo el pie”, “mamá me duele la cabeza”, “hoy no me siento bien”, son algunas de las excusas más comunes para no ir a la escuela de aquellos niños que podrían ser víctimas de acoso escolar, mejor conocido como Bullying.

La psicóloga y doctora en Educación, Marisel Elías Miranda, explica que el acoso escolar es cualquier tipo de hostigamiento e intimidación de una persona a otra, mantenida en el tiempo y con la intención de hacer daño.

Aunque no siempre es grupal, una de sus características fundamentales es el desequilibrio de poder: la víctima está sola frente a un grupo de agresores y observadores (que suelen ser el resto de la clase); estos últimos saben lo que está pasando pero no hacen o dicen nada por diferentes motivos.

Estadísticas a nivel nacional revelan que de un 20% a 30% de los niños ha sufrido de acoso escolar.

Tipos de acoso: - El más común es el verbal, en forma de insultos, humillaciones o propagación de falsos rumores, mensajes telefónicos o llamadas.

- El social es aquel donde se excluye y aisla a la víctima, por ejemplo se le deja fuera de las actividades, juegos entre compañeros, fiestas etc.

- El psicológico, el cual está basado en amenazas.

- El físico, que contempla tanto agresiones directas como indirectas, como por ejemplo producir daño en objetos personales de la víctima.

- El ciberbullying, El acceso hoy en día al internet desde computadoras, IPad y teléfonos ha dado pie a una nueva modalidad. Se trata de difundir información o imágenes de la víctima de manera rápida y sencilla a través de las redes sociales

¿Qué deben hacer los padres?

La Trabajadora Social, Alina Gallego, del Departamento de Servicio al Estudiante de las Escuelas Públicas de Miami-Dade, recomienda que una vez que el padre sospeche o conozca que su hijo esta siendo víctima, se reúna con el Consejero de la escuela y le exponga la situación. Por lo tanto, la escuela tiene el deber de investigar y luego reportar al padre el resultado de las indagaciones.

La profesional asimismo insta a los padres a tener conversaciones diarias con sus niños sin necesidad de mencionar la palabra acoso.

“Cómo te fue en la escuela, con quién jugaste hoy, con quién almorzaste en la cafetería. Son algunas preguntas que pueden darles pistas a los padres de lo que podría estarle pasando a su hijo”, comentó Gallego.

Asimismo, la doctora Elías asegura que mientras exista una buena comunicación entre padre e hijo, este último tendrá la confianza de expresar si es víctima o de denunciar si algún compañero lo sufre, además será más fácil enseñarles la importancia de aceptar a cada persona pese a su cultura, lenguaje o forma de vestirse”.

Levantado la bandera de la prevención El Sistema Escolar reconoce la importancia de prevenir el acoso en las escuelas. Por tal motivo tienen un currículo antiacoso desde preescolar hasta nivel de colegio, el cual consiste en cinco lecciones al año para hablar sobre el tema, las secuelas, y como ser parte del cambio.

Precisamente, en este mes las escuelas están enseñando el valor de Responsabilidad, el cual lo conectarán directamente en hacer decisiones responsables. Aquellos padres interesados en obtener más información al respecto pueden acceder a la página web de las escuelas públicas, www.dadeschools.net.

National level statistics reveal that between a 20 to 30 percent of kids has suffered bullying.

By Rosibel Mena | Translated by Sandra Chang “Mom, I have a stomachache,” “My foot is aching,” “Mom, I have a headache,” “I am not feeling well,” are some of the most often used excuses to not go to school by kids who are being victims of bullying.

Psychologist and school expert Marisel Elías Miranda explains that bullying is any kind of intimidation of one person by another over a period of time and with the intention to harm the other person.

Even though many times it is not done by a group of people, one of the most important characteristics is the imbalance of power; the victim is alone in front of group of attackers and observers (which usually are the rest of the class). The observers are aware of what is going on, but do nothing or say nothing for different reasons.

National level statistics reveal that between a 20 to 30 percent of kids has suffered bullying.

Kinds of bullying: - The most common type is verbal, such as insults, humiliations or starting false rumors through phone calls or text messages.

- Social: the victim is excluded and isolated. For example, is left out of activities, games among other kids, parties, etc.

- Psychological: based on threats.

- Physical: includes direct and indirect attacks, such as damaging personal property that belong to the victim.

- Cyberbullying: Today, access to the Internet from computers, tablets, and phones has created a new way of bullying, which is about promoting information or images of the victim in a quick and simple way through social network.

What should parents do?

Alina Gallego, a social worker at the of Department of Student Services at the Public Schools of Miami-Dade, recommends that once the parent suspects or knows the child is a victim of bullying, meets with the school counselor and presents the situation. Therefore, the school has the obligation to investigate and later report to the parent the result of their work. She also asked parents to have daily conversations with their kids without using the word bullying. “’How was school? Who did you play with today?

Who did you have lunch with?’ These are some of the questions that can give some the parents clues to what may be going on with their kid,” said Gallego.

Likewise, doctor Elias maintains that so long as there is a good communication between parents and kids, the little ones will have the trust to express what is going on at school and if they are being bullied, and even mention who is the perpetrator. It will also be easier to teach them the importance of accepting others regardless of their language or culture.

Raising the banner of prevention The school system recognizes the importance of preventing bullying at school. Therefore, they have an anti-bullying curriculum, from pre-school through high school, which includes five lessons every year to talk about the subject, consequences, and how to be an agent of change. El próximo 7 de noviembre en el área Harris Field Park ubicado en el corazón de Homestead, se va a realizar el festival de música cristiana God UltraFest, la admisión al evento es completamente gratis.

Go! Latinos habló con el organizador del evento, Carlos Pérez, quien aseguró que el festival busca de forma positiva impactar a la juventud a través del Hip Hop y la música Gospel que alaba a Dios. “Desde hace más de 5 años, Dios puso en mi corazón las ganas de hacer el evento y desde hace un año llevo organizándolo”, agregó.

El proyecto en el que Carlos ha trabajado sólo e inclusive ha costeado con los gastos económicos, tiene como objetivo resaltar la importancia de los jóvenes en la nación y busca reflejar la imagen de Dios a través de la música. El evento va a tener la presentación de 13 artistas cristianos locales, 6 DJ’s y varios pastores locales. Los artistas que participarán en el God UltraFest son: YoungSoulz, Surfgvng, Steven Rowel, Sean Oli-

vera, RevMizz, Nak Daniels NOG, KING DAVID, JDub, ilish Valdivia, Doxamillion, Carlos Bedoya y Ammo, quienes con su música buscarán involucrar positivamente a nuevas generaciones de jóvenes a través del mensaje de Dios.

The Ultrafest, a free Christian music festival, will take place on November 7 from 1 to 10 PM in the area of Harris Field Park, located in the heart of Homestead.

Go! Latinos talked to the event organizer, Carlos Pérez, who said that the event looks to positively impact the life of youth through hip hop and gospel music that worships God. “For more than five years, God put in my heart the energy to make the event, and I have been planning it for a year,”

said Pérez.

The event, in which Pérez has worked by himself and has paid for all the financial expenses, has as a goal to emphasize the importance of youth in the nation and seeks to reflect the image of God in music.

The event will present more than 13 Christian local artists, 6 djs and a number of local pastors. The artists that will participate in the event are: YoungSoulz, Surfgvng, Steven Rowel, Sean Olivera, RevMizz, Nak Daniels NOG, KING DAVID, JDub, ilish Valdivia, Doxamillion, Carlos Bedoya and Ammo.

They seek to positively involve new generations through music as well as through God’s word. There will also be an auto show, graffiti artists, local vendors, and food trucks.

“Usted tiene cáncer”, tres palabras que cambiaron la vida de Felicita Benitez. Su primera reacción fue llorar, mientras escuchaba el diagnóstico al otro lado del teléfono.

Hacía tan sólo unos días atrás se había sentido una pelotita, como del tamaño de una canica, en uno de sus senos, y ahora se enfrentaba a la incertidumbre de un cáncer en etapa 3.

“Uno escucha casos de gente que ha padecido la enfermedad, ve las noticias pero nunca se imagina que a uno le puede pasar”, comentó esta sobreviviente quien decidió vivir un día a la vez.

Y así lo hizo, hoy día reconoce que es una persona feliz que ha retomado nuevamente sus visitas al gimnasio. “Quiero que las mujeres tomen conciencia de la importancia de estar informadas sobre esta enfermedad y conocer sus cuerpos para detectar a tiempo cualquier anormalidad y reducir sus secuelas”.

Felicita reconoce que la actitud positiva que tuvo ante la adversidad y la fe en Dios logró que los días de oscuridad y soledad no se apoderaran de su estado de ánimo.

Para algunas mujeres será demasiado tarde y, para otras, el inicio de un doloroso camino a la recuperación plena -cirugía, quimioterapia, radioterapia-, lleno de incertidumbre y con una profunda carga emocional.

Si bien es cierto se han hecho progresos en el logro de detección temprana, mejores tratamientos y una vida más larga, millones de mujeres siguen teniendo sus vidas devastadas por este mal.

Según el Instituto Nacional del Cáncer, (NCI, por sus siglas en inglés) una de cada ocho muje-

res en Estados Unidos, son diagnosticadas con tumores malignos de seno.

En los últimos años, la cifra de quienes padecen esta enfermedad ha ido en aumento dentro de la población hispana, explica el doctor Samuel González, hematólogo - oncólogo de Homestead Cancer Institute.

Y es que como explica el experto el aumento de casos se debe a que “mientras las mujeres más buscan, más encuentran, por lo tanto el cáncer si es curable en la medida que se detecte a tiempo”.

Los datos de la Sociedad Americana contra el Cáncer (ACS por sus siglas en inglés) si bien son alarmantes, demuestran una realidad; para el año 2015 se diagnosticarán 231,840 casos nuevos de cáncer invasivo de seno y alrededor de 40.290 mujeres morirán.

“Muy pocas recuerdan la importancia del autoexamen y las revisiones periódicas durante el resto del año. Es así como día a día llegan a nuestras instalaciones mujeres con mucho desconocimiento, dudas, desinformación o que ya se encuentran en estados avanzados de la enfermedad”, según González.

Frente a las estadísticas actuales, los expertos coinciden que las campañas de concientización no solo deben enfatizarse en el mes de octubre sino durante todo el año.

No descuidarse Dentro del marco de celebración del Día Mundial contra el Cáncer de Seno, los expertos instan a las mujeres a no olvidar el autoexamen, las mamografías o los ultrasonidos para evitar diagnósticos tardíos.

• El sexo. Es más frecuente en mujeres que en hombres.

• La edad. Cuanto mayor sea, más alta es la amenaza.

• La historia familiar. Mujeres cuya madre o hermana han tenido la enfermedad poseen casi el doble de riesgo de padecerla.

• La etnia. Las blancas tiene un riesgo ligeramente mayor que las africanas, hispanas o las orientales.

• Periodos menstruales. Se considera que la amenaza es mayor

para quienes tuvieron una menstruación antes de los 12 años.

• Obesidad • Alcohol • Tabaco • Baja actividad física • Si ha estado expuesto a un tipo de radiación por otros tumores.

“You have cancer.” These three words changed the life of Felicita Benitez. Her first reaction was to cry while she was listening to her diagnosis on the other side of the phone. Only a few days before she felt a ball, the size of a small marble in one of her breasts and now she was facing the uncertainty of stage-three cancer.

“You hear about different cases from people that have had the disease, and you also see the news, but you never think it’s going to be you,” said Benitez.

She decided to keep on living and today she can say that she is a happy woman that has continued to go to the gym. “I want women to be aware and how important it is to be informed about this disease. Also, know your bodies to detect on time any anomaly and reduce the negative effects.”

Felicita recognizes that the positive attitude she had against her diagnosis and faith in God caused a good effect even in the darkest days. For many women it would be too late, and for some, the start of a painful way towards recovery, surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, filled with uncertainty and a deep emotional baggage.

Even though it’s true that progress has been made towards an early diagnosis, better treatments, and a longer life, millions of women continue to be devastated by breast cancer. According to the National Cancer Institute, one in eight women in the United States are diagnosed with breast cancer. In the last years, the number of people who have the disease has increased, especially among Hispanics, said Doctor Samuel Gonzalez, hematologist and oncologist at Homestead Cancer Institute.

He said that the increase is because “When the women look, they find, therefore the cancer is curable while it’s discovered on time.”

Even though the facts on breast cancer from the Ame-

rican Cancer Society are alarming, they show a reality; for 2015, 231,840 new cases of invasive breast cancer will arise and about 40,290 women will die.

“Very few women remember the importance of self examination and periodical check ups during the year. One day, they arrive at our offices, and these are women who have very little knowledge, doubts, are misinformed, or who are late into the disease,” says Gonzalez.

When seeing the current statistics, experts say that awareness campaigns should not only be emphasized in October, but during the entire year, and they should not be taken lightly.

Honor a quien honor merece...

La Junta Escolar del Condado de Miami-Dade reconoció la labor de una de las grandes influencias de la danza flamenca en Miami, el pasado mes de septiembre en el Edificio de la Junta Administrativa del Sistema Escolar.

Se trata de la distinguida bailarina española, Omayra Amaya, quien es sobrina nieta de la legendaria Carmen Amaya o mejor conocida por muchos como “la más grande bailarina gitana de su generación”.

La entrega del reconocimiento estuvo a cargo de la señora Lubby Navarro, quien es miembro del Consejo de la Junta Escolar del Condado de MiamiDade, Distrito # 7.

Siguiendo los pasos de sus padres y su tía abuela, la señora Omayra ha contribuido al mundo del baile flamenco y de las artes como maestra y coreógrafa.

“Este reconocimiento me hace muy feliz, porque significa que la Junta Escolar ve la importancia que tienen las artes en la educación del niño”, manifestó Amaya.

La profesional se considera un vivo ejemplo de cómo el arte a través de la danza le ayudó a desarrollarse física y personalmente. Y no es para

menos, desde que tiene uso de razón sus recuerdos giran en escenarios y bailes, mientras acompañaba a sus padres en las prácticas de danza. Es así como su primera coreografía en un escenario fue a la edad de 12 años, al debutar como compañera de baile junto a su padre.

“Las artes ya sea danza, música o pintura ayudan a conocerse uno mismo y comprender lo que lo rodea. Las horas de entrenamiento hacen que el individuo crezca como artista y ser humano”, manifestó Amaya.

Esta distinguida bailarina captó la atención de los medios nacionales e inspiró al Servicio Público de Radiodifusión (mejor conocido en sus siglas en inglés PBS) para el documental acerca de Amaya y el Corazón Gitano.

Actualmente Amaya es miembro de la Facultad del Conservatorio de Boston, del Ballet de Boston y el Departamento de Danza de la Universidad de Harvard. Al mismo tiempo dirige y enseña una mezcla de música moderna española con el baile tradicional flamenco en ciudades como Miami y Nueva York.

The Miami-Dade County School Board recognized the work of one of the most important influences in flamenco dance in Miami. The celebration took place in the school board building in the month of September. We are talking about the distinguished Spanish dancer Omayra Anaya, who is the great niece of the legendary Carmen Anaya, better known for many as the greatest gypsy dancer of her generation.

Lubby Navarro, member of the school board and representative of the seventh district, was responsible for the celebration.

Following the footsteps of her parents and her great aunt, Omayra has contributed so much to the world of flamenco and to the arts in general as a teacher and choreographer.

“This honor makes me very happy because it means that the school board sees the importance that the arts have in the education of a child,” said Amaya.

She sees herself as an example of how an art, in her case dance, has allowed her to develop herself physically and personally. Since she can remember, she has memories of stages and dances while she was travelling with her parents practicing dances. This is why her first choreography in a stage was when she was 12 years old. She was acting as a support to her father.

“The arts, like dance, music or paint, help to know yourself and understand what surrounds us. The hours of training make the person grow as an artist and human being,” said Amaya.

She captivated the attention of national media and inspired the Public Broadcast Service (PBS) to make the documentary about Amaya and the gypsy heart.

Today, Amaya is a member of the faculty at the Boston Conservatory, Boston Ballet and the Department of Dance at the University of Harvard. At the same time she directs and teaches a mix of modern Spanish music with traditional flamenco dance in cities like Miami and New York.

St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer - Miami, FL

El pasado 26 de Septiembre más de 4 mil personas participaron en el “St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer”. El evento se realizó en el Zoo Miami, donde se logró recaudar más de 300 mil dólares destinados a contribuir al tratamiento de miles de niños que luchan contra el cáncer y otras enfermedades terminales.

More than 4,000 people participated in the “St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer” on September 26th.

The event took place at the Miami Zoo, where they raised more than 300,000 dollars for the thousands of children battling cancer and terminal diseases.
