This interest badge for Rainbows lets girls dream it, plan it, build it!

Rainbows learn about the great

outdoors as they explore the Camp Skills Builder. Using their Tent-tastic skills Rainbows learn how to put up a tent!

Our Rainbows have been getting Camping Creative and using piles of blankets, cushions, rugs and throws they have built their very own hideaways.

The Camp Skills Builder is a great way for girls to learn how to work as a team, encourages inventiveness and helps them learn about decision making.

Worldwide

Girlguiding Bedfordshire achieves these events with our brilliant team of volunteers who run the weekly Guiding sessions, organise trips and visits, events, outings, camps and so much more... We need more volunteers to help us continue giving exciting opportunities to 5 -18 year olds that can change their lives and outlooks.

Guides and Rangers county also have oppo ternational Camps an SOAR in Canada show enjoy camping with r Guiding from all over

Brownies learn how to make a Camp both indoors and outdoors.

Our Brownies have put these skills to good use as 300 of them took part in the YMCA 'Sleep Out'.

The girls learnt about homelessness and about how they could help make a difference.

The Brownies made temporary homes using nothing but a cardboard box, newspapers and any other things they could find that they thought would help keep them warm.

Brownies can try their hand at innovating and inventing with this new badge

They then spent a night raising funds for the YMCA by sleeping in The Mall in Luton.

Guides had the opportunity to

find out about, not only Heritage Guiding but also how Camping used to be at a Vintage Flying Day held at Shuttleworth Airfield. The Guides set up two camps, one using traditional canvas tents and the another using modern camping equipment.

They ran various activities for the public to take part in including constructing a cardboard plane for a ‘virtual reality’ flying experience.

Camping!

s from across the ortunities to visit Ind Jamborees such as wn here, where they representatives from the world.

Our volunteers come from every walk of life and offer a myriad of skills to girls from 5-18 years old. Our helpers skill sets range from Artists to Aviators, Zookeepers and Housewives to computer wizards. This way, girls can learn from their mentors. If you have some spare time to help out contact us on www.bedsguiding.org.uk

The Heritage Camp and Modern Camp worked side by side so visitors could compare the Guides progress to lightweight camping. Some of the girls went that extra mile and took part in the experience wearing the old style uniform and hats.

Our New Programme...

Guides are changing over to a new programme which is now being rolled out over all the age groups.

It works on building blocks so that making camps as a Rainbow will lead on to away from home expeditions and overnight stays.

As the girls progress to Guides, they have camping opportunities home and abroad. These develop into overnights in bivouacks as Rangers and opportunities for worldwide travel to International camping.

Rangers went Bivouacking as part of gaining their DofE Award.

Bivouacking is a challenge as it means that girls must build their own encampment and improvised shelters using only materials that they can find. After building their shelters the girls then stayed in them overnight.

Rangers can plan their trips and get ready to have adventures with the Travel badge

They used ground sheets, a plastic sack, branches and leaves to help keep them warm and dry. In the morning the Rangers made their own breakfast over an open fire made from materials scavenged in the woodland.

All this is backed up by a wealth of experience gained through time in guiding.

Issue No.16 October 2019

Wings to Fly with Princess Anne Some of our Rainbows, Brownies and Guides were delighted to be a part of a project to create a brand new piece of art for London Luton Airports redesigned arrivals area. The mural is a pair of wings, with each feather representing every woman who works at the airport.

The Rainbows, Brownies and Guides had been busy earlier this year getting creative as they designed the feathers which make up the wings. The mural was designed as part of a larger project to celebrate women in aviation. The girls used collage effects, stickers and artwork to create the feathers which came together to make the final piece. On Princess Anne's visit to the airport, she was shown the newly-transformed terminal and the Rainbows, Brownies and Guide were delighted to present the mural to her.

Luton Brownies are Flying High

As part of encouraging more girls to enter aviation, Girlguiding has introduced an Aviation Badge at Brownies to inspire more girls to pursue careers as pilots. The new badge, launched in partnership with EasyJet, hopes to engage girls aged seven to 10 in aviation, by raising awareness of the opportunities to be a pilot.

To earn the badge, girls will challenge themselves to think of 40 things that fly and also put their engineering skills to the test, creating their own aircraft experiments with different building materials, structures and launch techniques. Pictures show 15th Luton Brownies visiting TUI at LLA as part of the Aviation Badge
