This was the period from 1920 to 1933 that the manufacture and sale of any intoxicating liquors were made by the 18th amendment of the U.S. Constitution of the United States to be illegal. It was the 21st amendment that repealed this prohibition that marked a time of large scale smuggling and illegal sales of liquor and of organized crime plus increased the restriction on personal freedoms.

Throughout the world people have always enjoyed a good mug of cold beer and a satisfying swig of their favorite liquor after a hard day’s work or in celebration of weddings, winning wars, having a child or any number of other reasons or for no reason at all. The Prohibition movement started in the 1820’s due to the revival of Protestantism that saw the consumption of alcohol as sinful and a destructive force in polite society with the first state of Maine to pass a law making it illegal in 1846 and other states following in the years before the Civil War. Can you imagine a life without beer or other liquors? Neither can Heather Marble the owner of the Blue Marble Pub located at 816 High Street in Chippewa Falls, WI whose bar theme reflects this era of Prohibition in our history thru historical pictures on the walls to the general feel and atmosphere of her business and the names of her food on her full menu.

Heather is native to the Chippewa Falls, WI Heather Marble Blue Marble Pub Owner area and graduated from the Chippewa Falls High School. She started her bar career as a part-time bartender when she was still a senior in High School for Colleen Sweeney who owns the Sweeney’s bars in both Chippewa Falls and Cornell, WI. At the time of their meeting, Colleen’s business was really taking off with karaoke on Saturday nights and then food sales in Chippewa Falls (before she bought her location in Cornell) and she needed help. Soon Heather was working full-time and stayed for 16 years. She also bartended part-time for Bill Gauger owner of the 1st & Goal and Brain Krista of Burly’s both also located in Chippewa Falls and just down the street from one another.

Around 2012 Colleen Sweeney was starting to think of moving on from the food and beverage industry and Heather found herself interested more and more in giving restaurant and bar ownership the old college try and she had offered to buy it three times but each time Colleen wasn’t quite ready to give up the ship of her successful business and leave all of her happy patrons behind. Heather then tried to buy the Jehovah Witness building which had been up for sale in Chippewa Falls for many years but the business although stated to be zoned both a residential and commercial site was actually found to be only a residential site. She then went into a short partnership with the

owner of the BP Gas Station in Lake Wissota but due to some interesting business frustrations this venture did not last long. Heather then went to work for a short time for Jess of the Shelly House in Chippewa Falls until she saw her current business building was up for sale and put an offer in to buy it and applied for a liquor license.

The building that houses the Blue Marble Pub was originally made as a location to get your carriages and sleighs fixed or to buy and was named John Bresina’s Carriages & Sleighs in the early 1900’s. It was also a National Guard Armory at one time and then sat vacant for several years and used as storage. Most recently the building was owned by Troy and Cheryl Story who rented it to Seth and Alisa Short who had used it for their Cross-Fit business. They have since moved their business River Street area in Chippewa Falls.

Moving in was easy Heather says as the building was just a shell with a good bathroom. She added on some extra walls to create her kitchen area and bar but other than that the building is completely original and authentic giving customers a feel for days gone by in a relaxed and cozy setting. Heather wants her place to be known more as a restaurant than a bar although she does have the new bar area and serves many different locally made beers from your traditional domestics to your premium and craft beers such as; Lazy Monk Kellerbrater and Lazy Days Lager to Leinie’s Red Pale Ale, Orange Shandy, Creamy Dark and Honeyweiss Hop & Barrel lager and Helles Lager. Plus: Mudpuppy Porter, Indeed Flavorwave IPA, FML double IPA, Sam Adams Cold Snap, Spotted Cow, Blue Moon, and many others. She also offers wine coolers and ciders from the Blue Marble-rita to the Twisted Tea, Cider Boys Tiki Colada and White Claw Black Cherry to name only a few. Stop into the Blue Marble Pub for one of your favorite drinks today! Maybe a Black Out Old Fashioned, Gin Rickey, Manhattan or a Corleone or perhaps a wine is more to your liking.

Finally summer is here and it is my birthday month so I am especially happy this month.

Although none of us truly likes getting older, do we? But it is however better than the alternative and I welcome every line and wrinkle God grants me.

We never know how many years we will have on this remarkable home of ours that is earth and it is important to enjoy every little and big thing including the happy and sad times. With this in mind I want to say a heart felt good-bye to a friend of mine and customer of the Grub and Pub Report..

Denise Vik ‘Nester’ of the Hilltop Tavern in Eau Claire whom I just found out as I write this passed away in early May. God Speed Nester.. you will be missed!

Please do not take your days or the people you know for granted.

Live each day to the fullest and I can’t stress this enough .. do NOT hold grudges or long standing disappointments, disagreements or feuding. The issue(s) that causes hurt or dissatisfaction in a persons life is NEVER more important than the person. Again, we don’t know the number of our days, only the good Lord knows these and we need to do all we can to make peace or at least be peaceful people remembering to give more credit to those who live than the stuff or things we want or want them to do or the people we want them to be.

Life is full of disappointments but we can always make a choice to not be disappointed or angry

and when someone hurts us we can choose to forgive even when it is hard. Do this for yourself and them today and start living life again to the fullest possible measure that a human can. The other only keeps you in a place of vulnerability and false sense of strength over the other person.

Which only fosters a longer standing disagreement of hurt that you perpetually live in. Why waste your time, energy and talents when you could once again be having fun with the other person or at least live without more regrets.

I hope you will enjoy this months issue and remember to honor your fathers this month.

This includes those great stepdads, foster and adoptive fathers, grandfathers and special uncles & coaches etc. who have become like fathers. It also includes those moms who have had to be both father and mother to their children due to a fathers absence and big brothers that none of us should have to live without!

Thank you to all of you men who make children an important part of your life and showing them they are significant and wanted. You will never know how the time you give, the direction and correction helps each one of us grow into good, law abiding and respectful loving beings.

HELGA'S CRUISE SHIP DEAR DIARY - DAY 1 All packed for the cruise ship -all my nicest dresses, swimsuits, short sets. Really, really exciting.

Our local Red Hat chapter - The Late Bloomers, decided on this "all-girls" trip.

It will be my first one, - and I can't wait!

DEAR DIARY - DAY 2 Entire day at sea, beautiful. Saw whales and dolphins. Met the Captain today -- seems like a very nice, handsome man.

DEAR DIARY - DAY 3 At the pool today. Did some shuffleboard, hit golf balls off the deck. Captain invited me to join him at his table for dinner. Felt honored and had a wonderful time. He is very attractive and attentive.

DEAR DIARY - DAY 4 Won $800.00 in the ship's casino.

Captain asked me to have dinner with him in his own cabin. Had a scrumptious meal complete with caviar and champagne. He asked me to stay the night, but I declined. Told him I could not be unfaithful to my husband.

DEAR DIARY - DAY 5 Pool again today. Got a bit sunburned, and I went inside to drink at piano-bar, stayed there for rest of day. Captain saw me, bought me several large drinks.

Really is quite charming. Again asked me to visit his cabin for the night. Again I declined.

He told me, if I did not let him have his way with me, he would sink the ship... I was shocked.

Garlic: Planting garlic bulbs among your vegetables is another way to deter deer from munching on plants.

Garlic, Allium sativum, is an easy crop that requires little maintenance. Garlic is hardy in zones 7 to 9. It prefers moist soil and fertilizing with chicken manure or cottonseed meal.

Well-draining soil is important to garlic cultivation. Add soil amendment to ensure good drainage.

Cosmos: Cosmos, Cosmos spp., is an annual flowing plant that is available in a variety of colors to add interest to your garden areas.

Oleander is poisonous when consumed and deer know that they should avoid it, according to the University of California Davis website. When grown at the edges of your vegetable garden it will help to deter unwelcome dinner guests. It grows in USDA Hardiness Zones 8 to 10.

NIGHT OF DRINKING A man and his pet Antelope walk into a bar. It's about 5pm, but they're ready for a good night of drinking. They start off slowly, watching TV, drinking beer, eating peanuts. As the night goes on they move to mixed drinks, and then shooters, one after the other.

CHIPPEWA FALLS PAGE THE RIGHT CHOICE My 16-year-old brother, Ryan, was out late with friends one night. Suddenly he realized it was Father’s Day and he had neglected to buy a card for our dad. After much searching, Ryan located an open store, but was disappointed to find only two cards left on a picked-over rack. Selecting one, he brought it home and, somewhat sheepishly, presented it to our father.

Upon opening it, Dad read this message: “You’ve been like a father to me.”

He looked at Ryan, puzzled.

“Well, Dad,” Ryan tried to explain, “it was either that or the card that said, ‘Now that I’m a father too!'”

GARDEN TIPS Garlic Spray: Homemade garlic spray repels various animals, such as deer, rabbits and opossums, and damaging insects from vegetable plants. Minced garlic cloves soaked in mineral oil for at least 24 hours create the first ingredient for the concentrated garlic oil spray. A ratio of about 3 ounces of garlic to 1 ounce of mineral oil typically works well to deter pests.

The second half of the spray consists of 1 teaspoon of fish emulsion (See pg 9), 1 tablespoon of castile soap and 16 ounces of lukewarm water.

Fish emulsion is commonly used as an organic fertilizer and is made from mixing fish waste -such as fish guts -- with water and allowing it to rot for several weeks. This smelly liquid is also available for purchase at garden centers. Strain the garlic from the oil, combine the oil with the fish emulsion solution, and store it in a dark, dry and cool location.

Before using, dilute 2 to 3 tablespoons of the homemade garlic spray with 1 pint of lukewarm water, and liberally spray the vegetable plants and you can add a few tablespoons of pepper to help increase its potency.

THANKS FOR THE SODA, POP Before I took the old family car to college, my father loaded the trunk with soft-drink bottles filled with oil, coolant and transmission fluid. Sure enough, my car overheated. Scolding myself for not listening to my father’s instructions, I looked at the engine and saw how well he knew me.

The oil cap was labeled Dr Pepper, the transmission stick, Coke, and the empty coolant container, Diet Pepsi. I finished the trip safely.

EVENLY MATCHED A fellow is getting ready to teeoff on the first hole when a second fellow approaches and asks if he can join him. The first says that he usually plays alone but agrees to let the second guy join him.

Well, the second guy wins the rest of the holes and as they're walking off of the eighteenth hole, and while counting his $80.00, he confesses that he's the pro at a neighboring course and likes to pick on suckers.

The first fellow reveals that he's the Parish Priest at the local Catholic Church to which the second fellow gets all flustered and apologetic and offers to give the Priest back his money.

The Priest says, "No, no. You won fair and square and I was foolish to bet with you. You keep your winnings."

The pro says, "Well, is there anything I can do to make it up to you?"

EAU CLAIRE - LAKE HALLIE PAGE BETTING ON GOLF A man and lady golfer was betting and by the end of the first nine, it was obvious that the lady was no match for the man. Going into the second nine, the lady doubled the bet which the man agreed. At the end of eighteen holes the lady had lost both rounds. By then, it was getting dark and the lady suggested that they play a few more holes to judge her game. Obligingly, the man agreed. After teeing off, it was obvious that play would have to be halted due to the darkness.

The man suggested that they walk back to the clubhouse for a drink and also to settle the bet which he had won.

Being a lousy loser, the lady decided to have one last bet.

Looking around, she noticed that there was nobody on the course.

"Look" said the lady to the man.

"We will have the last bet of the day with an additional of $100 bonus if either of us should win."

Being the winner, he did not want to be called a coward and so he agreed. "Let's see who will pee the furthest." Both agreed.

The lady took down her pants

and undid her knickers. Squatted down and she began. The man took the measurement and it measured a putter's length. After the lady finished dressing, the man began to unzip and with his right hand took it out to start.

At this juncture, the lady said, "No free lift!"

BEARS FAMILY COURT Mama and Papa bear were splitting up, and baby bear had to decide who he was going to live with in family court. So, the judge wanted to talk to baby bear to see what he thought about living with either of his parents. When he asked baby bear about living with his father, baby bear said "No, I can't live with Papa bear, he beats me terribly."

"OK," said the judge, "then you want to live with your mother, right?"

"No way!" replied baby bear, "She beats me worse than Papa bear does."

The judge was a bit confused by this, and didn't quite know what to do. "Well, you have to live with someone, so is there any relatives you would like to stay with?"

EAU CLAIRE PAGE QUESTION FOR DADDY A man came home from work late again, tired and irritated. He found his 5-year-old son waiting for him at the door. “Daddy, may I ask you a question?”

The dad replied: “Yeah, sure, what is it?”

“Daddy, how much money do you make an hour?”

The dad got mad and said, “That’s none of your business!

Why do you want to know?”

The little boy said, “I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour?”

The dad, wanting to sit down and relax, said, “If you must know, I make $20 an hour.”

The little boy sighed and bowed his head. Looking up, he asked, “Daddy, may I borrow $10 please?”

The father flew off the handle, “If the only reason you wanted to know how much money I make is so that you can hit me up for some cash to buy some stupid toy, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. You’re so selfish. I work long, hard hours every day and don’t have time for this.”

The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door.

The dad sat down and started to get even madder about the nerve of his little boy. How dare he ask questions only to get some money? After an hour or so, the man had calmed down, and started to think that maybe he was a bit hard on his boy. Maybe his son really needed the money for something important. And so, the father went up to his boy’s room and opened it, “Are you asleep, son?”

“No daddy. I’m awake,” replied the boy.

“I’ve been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier. It’s been a long day, and I took it out on you.

Here’s that 10 bucks you asked for.”

The little boy sat straight up, beaming. “Oh, thank you, daddy!” he exclaimed. Then, reaching under his pillow, he pulled out a wad of crumpled up bills.

The dad, seeing that the boy already had some money, started to get angry again. The little boy slowly counted out his money, and then looked up at his dad.

Upon awakening, the little guy says, "Well, you caught me fair and square. I am a leprechaun. I will grant you three wishes."

The man says "I can't take anything from you, I'm just glad I didn't hurt you too badly," and walks away. Watching the golfer depart, the leprechaun says "Well, he was a nice enough guy, and he did catch me, so I have to do something for him. I'll give him the three things that I would want.

I'll give him unlimited money, a great golf game, and a great gambling success."

Well, a year goes past (as they often do in jokes like this) and the same golfer is out golfing on the same course at the 16th hole. He gets up and hits one into the same woods and goes off looking for his ball. When he finds the ball he sees the same little guy and asks how he is doing. The leprechaun says, "I'm fine, and might I ask how your golf game is?"

The golfer says, "It's great! I hit under par every time."

"I did that for you," responds the leprechaun, "And might I ask how your money is holding out?"

"Well, now that you mention it, every time I put my hand in my pocket, I pull out a hundred pound note" he replied.

The leprechaun smiles and says, "I did that for you. And might I ask how your gambling life is?"

Now the golfer looks at him a little shyly and says, "Well, maybe once or twice a week."

Floored the leprechaun stammers, "Once or twice a week?"

The golfer looks at him

sheepishly and says, "Well, that's not too bad for a Catholic priest in a small parish."

Then he told the following story: Shay and I had walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked, 'Do you think they'll let me play?' I knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on their team, but as a father I also understood that if my son were allowed to play, it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence to be accepted by others in spite of his handicaps.

I approached one of the boys on the field and asked (not expecting much) if Shay could play. The boy looked around for guidance and said, 'We're losing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning. I guess he can be on our team and we'll try to put him in to bat in the ninth inning.’

Shay struggled over to the team's bench and, with a broad smile, put on a team shirt. I watched with a small tear in my eye and warmth in my heart. The boys saw my joy at my son being accepted.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shay's team scored a few runs but was still behind by three.

In the top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and played in the right field. Even though no hits came his way, he was obviously ecstatic just to be in the game and on the field, grinning from ear to ear as I waved to him from the stands.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay's team scored again.

Now, with two outs and the bases loaded, the potential winning run was on base and Shay was scheduled to be next at bat.

At this juncture, do they let Shay bat and give away their chance to win the game?

Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat. Everyone knew that a hit was all but impossible because Shay didn't even know how to hold the bat properly, much less connect with the ball.

However, as Shay stepped up to the Plate, the pitcher, recognizing that the other team was putting winning aside for this moment in Shay's life, moved in a few steps to lob the ball in softly so Shay could at least make contact.

The first pitch came and Shay swung clumsily and missed.

The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly towards Shay.

As the pitch came in, Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball right back to the pitcher.

The game would now be over.

The pitcher picked up the soft grounder and could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman.

Everyone from the stands and both teams started yelling, 'Shay, run to first! Run to first!'

Never in his life had Shay ever run that far, but he made it to first base.

He scampered down the baseline, wide-eyed and startled.

Everyone yelled, 'Run to second, run to second!'

Catching his breath, Shay awkwardly ran towards second, gleaming and struggling to make it to the base.

By the time Shay rounded towards second base, the right fielder had the ball. He was the smallest guy on their team and now had his first chance to be the hero for his team.

He could have thrown the ball to the second-baseman for the tag, but he understood the pitcher's intentions so he, too, intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third-baseman's head.

Shay ran toward third base deliriously as the runners ahead of him circled the bases toward home.

All were screaming, 'Shay, Shay, Shay, all the Way Shay' Shay reached third base because the opposing shortstop ran to help him by turning him in the direction of third base, and shouted, 'Run to third! Shay, run to third!'

As Shay rounded third, the boys from both teams, and the spectators, were on their feet screaming, 'Shay, run home! Run home!'

He had assumed that since the question about the man's ultimate destination wasn't clear, the man would go to Heaven. The man could just see behind Satan the most beautiful golf course he had ever seen. It had beautiful trees, blue ponds, water separating the fairways, everything. The man fell in love with it at first site, and he couldn't control himself. He just had to play a round. The devil showed him a wonderful electric golf cart, a perfect leather bag, a matched set of clubs. Satan reached into his pocket and presented the man with a Golden Tee. The devil then said that only members could play. The man couldn't control himself. He just had to play there.

Plant pumpkins in June to be ready for Halloween. Use plants that you have started or direct seed in the garden. Remember, these become huge plants unless you are growing the bush types. Leave them plenty of room in your garden.

Perennials: If the weather is dry, water plants when they wilt.

Apply 1 inch of water early in the day so that the plants dry before temperatures drop in the late afternoon.

Pruning Perennials: As soon as the blooms fade, cut them off.

Some perennials will re-bloom if old flowers are removed. For others, there is no need to burden the plants with a seed load unless you are collecting the seeds. Let the energy go into the plants.

Roses: Roses are at their best this month. The spring blooming varieties are at their full glory.

Roses need constant pruning.

Carry your knife or shears anytime you are in the rose garden.

Do not leave dead or diseased stems on the plants because the diseases will spread to healthy parts of the plants. Remove bare or spindly stems at the bottoms of the plants. They are places where canker diseases can start.

Shrubs: Hedges that have completed their first flushes of growth can be sheared now. Do not cut off all the new leaves.

Shape the plants so that they are wider at the bottoms than at the Remove old blooms from flowering shrubs. These plants can be pruned now as well, but hurry.

WHAT DOES A FATHER DO I received a letter from a single mother who had raised a son who was about to become a dad. Since he had no recollection of his own father, her question to me was

“What do I tell him a father does?”

When my dad died in my ninth year, I, too, was raised by my mother, giving rise to the same question, “What do fathers do?”

As far as I could observe, they brought around the car when it rained so everyone else could stay dry.

They always took the family pictures, which is why they were never in them. They carved turkeys on Thanksgiving, kept the car gassed up, weren’t afraid to go into the basement, mowed the lawn, and tightened the clothesline to keep it from sagging.

how to handle adversity, anger, disappointment and success.

He won’t laugh at their dreams no matter how impossible they might seem. He will dig out at 1 a.m. when one of his children runs out of gas. He will make unpopular decisions and stand by them. When he is wrong and makes a mistake, he will admit it.

He sets the tone for how family members treat one another, members of the opposite sex and people who are different than they are. By example, he can instill a desire to give something back to the community when its needs are greater than theirs.

He booked himself on a Caribbean cruise and proceeded to have the time of his life, that is, until the ship sank.

He soon found himself on an island with no other people, no supplies, nothing, only bananas and coconuts.

After about four months, he is lying on the beach one day when the most gorgeous woman he has ever seen rows up to the shore.

In disbelief, he asks, "Where did you come from? How did you get here?"

She replies, "I rowed over from the other side of the island where I landed when my cruise ship sank."

"Amazing," he notes. "You were really lucky to have a row boat wash up with you."

"Oh, this thing?" explains the woman. "I made the boat out of some raw material I found on the island. The oars were whittled from gum tree branches. I wove the bottom from palm tree branches, and the sides and stern came from a Eucalyptus tree."

So, after a short time of rowing, she soon docks the boat at a small wharf.

As the man looks to shore, he nearly falls off the boat. Before him is a long stone walk leading to a cabin and tree house. While the woman ties up the rowboat with an expertly woven hemp rope, the man can only stare ahead, dumb struck. As they walk into the house, she says casually, "It's not much, but I call it home.

"No! No thank you," the man blurts out, still dazed. "I can't take another drop of coconut juice."

"It's not coconut juice," winks the woman. "I have a still. How would you like a Tropical Spritz?"

Trying to hide his continued amazement, the man accepts, and they sit down on her couch to talk.

After they exchange their individual survival stories, the woman announces, "I'm going to slip into something more comfortable.

Would you like to take a shower and shave? There's a razor in the bathroom cabinet upstairs."

No longer questioning anything, the man goes upstairs into the bathroom. There, in the cabinet is a razor made from a piece of

tortoise bone. Two shells honed to a hollow ground edge are fastened on to its end inside a swivel mechanism.

"This woman is amazing," he muses. "What's next?"

When he returns, she greets him wearing nothing but some small flowers on tiny vines, each strategically positioned, she smelled faintly of gardenias.

She then beckons for him to sit down next to her. "Tell me," she begins suggestively, slithering closer to him, "We've both been out here for many months. You must have been lonely. There's something I'm certain you feel like doing right now, something you've been longing for, right?" She stares into his eyes.

He can't believe what he's hearing. "You mean..." he swallows excitedly as tears start to form in his eyes, "You've built a golf course?"
