A Scary Good Time

There are few more exciting weeks in Las Vegas than the one surrounding Halloween. The whole city comes alive with a frenetic energy, and thousands of holiday fans flood the Strip and elsewhere to join in the fun. Odds are many of you reading this week’s issue of Las Vegas Magazine already have your Halloween experience planned. However, we think we’ve packed a few tidbits into the following pages that will surprise you.

AREA15, an ever-evolving entertainment experience, recently unveiled its latest attraction: Universal Horror Unleashed, a series of haunted houses guaranteed to scare. To take the edge off the adrenaline-pumping frights, we’ve highlighted three distinct signature cocktails available at the destination’s three bars (“Drink If You Dare!” p. 42).

Speaking of cocktails, Las Vegas bars offer plenty of libations for every palate, and this week some of them are adding, shall we say, unorthodox ingredients to put you in the proper holiday mood (“What’s In This Glass?” p. 24).

Feel the Energy

From decor to service and food, this celebrity chef’s Strip restaurant brings you the full dining experience

Step inside Ramsay’s Kitchen by Gordon Ramsay at Harrah’s Las Vegas and the energy hits you immediately. It’s casually warm, exactly how you’d imagine the chef’s own kitchen would be. Start at the raw bar with oysters and a glass of wine, then settle into the dining room, where you can watch the team work through the open kitchen.

Ramsay has several restaurants in Las Vegas, ranging from fine dining to burger joints and a fish and chips stand at The Linq Promenade, but this destination feels distinctly personal. It’s not a television set piece like Gordon Ramsay Hell’s Kitchen; instead, it pulls together flavors from his global travels, where refined technique meets straightforward British comfort food, with detours through Asia and the Mediterranean.

The meal unfolds like a Ramsay greatest hits tour. Start with tuna tartare dressed in chili garlic soy, sour cream, avocado and wonton crisps, or the jumbo lump crab cake with citrus herb aioli. Beef carpaccio arrives topped with horseradish panna cotta, cured egg yolk, artichoke chips and English mustard sauce, a dish that balances richness and brightness without feeling heavy.

Then comes the centerpiece: Ramsay’s signature beef Wellington, filet wrapped in puff pastry and mushroom

duxelles, served with potato purée, glazed baby root vegetables and red wine demi-glace. It arrives medium rare, golden and inviting. Technically precise and visually dramatic, it’s the kind of dish Ramsay’s built his reputation on.

But that’s not the only star on this table: Pan-seared scallops pair with orange-glazed pork belly, pomegranate and apricot purée; crispy salmon comes in a green coconut curry sauce with sticky rice and Thai apple slaw; and braised short rib, pictured, comes with crispy onion straws. Vegetarians aren’t an afterthought: an elote risotto or maitake mushroom with char siu butter and miso aioli could anchor any meal.

For dessert, Ramsay’s sticky toffee pudding—warm sponge cake drenched in toffee sauce, paired with vanilla ice cream—makes clear why, as far as celebrity chefs go, Ramsay is in his own constellation.

Ramsay’s Kitchen by Gordon Ramsay is an invitation to sit down and taste the dishes that shaped the celebrity chef’s career. From London kitchens to television screens to this bustling room, this is comfort food with a Michelin pedigree. –Genevie Durano

Pure Catharsis

The singer who helped define the ’90s brings her soul-baring catalog to the Las Vegas Strip

If you’re a Gen Xer of a certain age, you remember exactly where you were when Alanis Morissette took her place in pop music history with “You Oughta Know,” “Hand In My Pocket” and “Ironic” off her album Jagged Little Pill. (I was a college student in Arizona, riding my bike to campus, listening to my Discman.) That particular song felt like a reckoning and gave a generation its own primal scream—raw, unflinching, undeniably cathartic.

The album reshaped what pop music could sound like. Morissette didn’t just sing about heartbreak; she excavated it, turning personal pain into universal, shriekable anthems. When she reminded you of the mess you left when you went away or proclaimed that life had a funny way of sneaking up on you, she was speaking truths that hit so deep some of us are still belting out these songs in the car 30 years on.

Jagged ’s staggering success—it remains the second bestselling album by a woman artist—could have defined Morissette’s entire career. Instead, she channeled her honesty across nine more albums, chasing new sounds and deeper truths, from the reflective Such Pretty Forks in

the Road to the meditative The Storm Before the Calm

Now, 30 years after Jagged ’s release, the seven-time Grammy winner is still blazing new trails with a limited run at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace. But for Morissette, this isn’t about looking backward.

“There’s a perception that we’ve gone somewhere or that this is a comeback or whatever the words are,” she recently told ELLE Canada magazine. “Well, I’ve been here the whole time, and I’ve been evolving and growing and falling on my face and getting back up 100 times. That’s just kind of what I’ve always done.”

Her approach to live performance remains as open as ever, telling the magazine that her concerts are “a space where if you want to cry through the whole thing, punch the air through the whole thing— whatever you need to do, I’m doing it with you.”

And for all her fans, Gen X and beyond, it’s an invitation to sing and scream—pure catharsis, no irony required. –Genevie Durano

Feeding Your Belly and Your Soul

Longstanding brunch event features an all-you-can-eat buffet and entertainment experience unlike any other

In a city full of entertainment and dining options, becoming an institution means providing guests from all walks of life an exemplary experience that leaves them with a sense of satisfaction. Gospel Brunch at House of Blues inside Mandalay Bay is one such institution. Since its inception more than two decades ago, the all-you-can-eat buffet and live entertainment experience has been uplifting local artists and filling bellies with delicious food.

Though the word “gospel” refers to the teachings of Christ and the content of the show comes from the Christian faith, it’s important to know this is not an exclusionary event. Host Patti Pennington and a rotating cast of choir singers, quartet singers, soloists and instrumentalists seek to uplift anyone who joins for the morning gathering.

“He’s a universal god. We don’t put Him in this box, which makes Him be presented to everybody, whomever they chose to (worship), whether it’s Allah, whether it’s Catholic, whether it’s whoever,” says Pennington. “The good thing about our music and His music is it is universal. Everybody can relate to hallelujah, salvation and glory … And then the excitement that we bring in the

show—we make you dance and laugh. So, it’s not just straight church.”

The truth in Pennington’s words is incredibly apparent the moment guests step foot in the venue, as there’s a welcoming sense of community and curiosity that fills the room almost as much as the irresistible scents of bacon and maple syrup. Then, when talented performers begin to belt spirited serenades from the stage, the impulse to join the revelry is undeniable.

While Pennington and her crew feed souls, the House of Blues kitchen staff is hard at work feeding grateful patrons. Find an irresistible array of creole-inspired bites like jambalaya and chicken and waffles offered alongside breakfast classics like omelets and biscuits and gravy.

“I’ve had waffles before, but there’s something about the way they cook the waffles. It’s so amazing, they have a buttery taste,” Pennington says. “And the bacon … I don’t know where or how they cook this bacon, but (it must be) a certain way they cook it because it’s so freaking good.”

Travel the Culinary Globe

‘Top Chef’ winner takes root on the Strip—and it’s glorious

No matter if you’re here for a multicourse journey or just a killer burger at the bar, Stubborn Seed—chef Jeremy Ford’s Miami-born restaurant now at Resorts World Las Vegas—has you covered.

The Top Chef season 13 winner and Michelin-starred chef has brought his bold, globally influenced cooking to town, and you should do your best to get a reservation just as soon as you can.

Ford specializes in tasting menus that read like passport stamp collections. Take the current lineup: You start with Kalamata olive ciabatta, followed by sake and

citrus-cured Japanese yellowtail topped with crispy tapioca and compressed Asian pear. Somewhere in this six-course procession of flavor comes the fragrant spiced barramundi, nestled in galangal curry with shiitake sofrito. The finale arrives as citrus pavlova with fall figs and caramelized pistachios.

Prefer to order à la carte? The menu gets even more expansive. JJ’s Guilty Pleasure Burger—double wagyu onion smash with smoked beef bacon and American cheese—lives up to its name.

The space itself makes a statement:

art deco vibes, 130 seats, threetiered ribbed-glass chandeliers and a glass-fronted kitchen. On one wall, a hand-painted mural inspired by The Great Wave off Kanagawa crashes across the dining room. The room is polished without feeling stuffy, which seems on brand. After all, this is a chef who just won a Green Michelin Star for sustainability efforts, but also puts a burger on his fine-dining menu. – Genevie Durano

What’s in This Glass?

Have a cocktail with a little extra-spooky something this Halloween in Vegas

Halloween in Vegas? Sounds like a party to us! And this year, you can really embrace the spirit of the season with thematic cocktails that not only taste great, but have some ingredients that might just give you the heebie-jeebies.

Creepy crawlies in cocktails aren’t necessarily a new concept, with insect-infused liquors existing across the world for decades, if not centuries. Anyone who watched George Lopez in the early aughts will remember the surreal scene in which Lopez indulges in “the worm,” a weevil larva found in the bottom of mezcal bottles, and hallucinates. (Which, by the way, won’t actually happen if you do get your hands on one.) But in Vegas, you don’t have to make it to the bottom of a bottle of mezcal to imbibe with insect inclusions; you just need to head to Madame Tussauds Las Vegas at the Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian Resort.

At the iconic wax figure museum, check outthe Haunted Hotel experience (open through Halloween), and order the Uninvited Guest, a mix of vodka, raspberry liqueur, blue curaçao, lemon-lime soda and ... salted crickets! (Eek!) In normal circumstances, we’d tell you that if your drink comes with some floating pests to send it back and

leave that bar quickly, but these are food-grade, totally-safe-to-consume critters that add to the fright of the night. If the thought of bugs in your drink gives you the ick, try the Death by Doctor, made with Dr. Pepper, spiced rum and amaretto.

Another spooky sip awaits at The Lock , a speakeasy hidden within The Cabinet of Curiosities at Horseshoe Las Vegas with an ingredient that might just weird you out. But we’re getting

ahead of ourselves—before you get to the Lock, there’s already some majorly cool Halloween vibes to take in.

Sit a spell in the Cabinet of Curiosities and explore the expansive oddities displays, filled with items that have their own spooky, unsettling or mysterious stories. And while you scan QR codes and learn all kinds of fun facts, there’s a whole set of Halloween cocktails to enjoy from the bar, which are different from what you’ll find beyond

the safe door that secures this venue’s moody speakeasy. For something that looks the part but only includes very normal, delicious ingredients, have the Vampire’s Special, made with vodka, amaretto, orange juice and a splash of club soda, served with a raspberry purée-filled syringe to stir.

OK, now let’s get a little freaky in The Lock. Ask the bartender for the Quoth the Raven and behold the sparkling, yet murky drink that will arrive. That color

is provided by squid ink, of all things. Once again, this cephalopod-sourced ingredient is safe for consumption (and actually quite common in various cultures)—it just looks a bit bizarre. But worry not, this drink will taste great with its mix of gin, creme de violette,

lemon juice and raspberry puree. And don’t let the sparkles alarm you; that’s just edible purple glitter. For something that looks supernatural but tastes great, sip the Witch’s Hex, made with tequila, lemon juice, yuzu syrup and passion fruit purée. –Em Jurbala

Artifact specialist helps bring the story of Titanic to life

When Duncan Lauer was growing up, he and his dad would talk about the history of the Titanic. “He was a huge fan of the ship—now he’s jealous that I work here,” Lauer says, smiling. Ten months ago, Lauer joined Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition at Luxor, where he works as an artifact specialist.

Lauer’s love for history and learning outside of the classroom has guided his career, which includes working at various museums and being a documentarian. “I thought working in museums would make a nice career, to create a space for education that feels less formal and con-

stricting than a classroom,” he says. “The nice thing about museums is it’s similar to documentaries in that it combines aspects of art and education in order to teach people things in a way that maybe people will enjoy and be open to.”

Normally, guests can find Lauer all around the exhibition, interacting with guests and answering any questions about the history of the ship and the more than 350 artifacts on display. But through Oct. 31, Lauer is stepping up his role by guiding guests through the timely, “Omens, Premonitions & Superstitions,” an add-on tour through the exhibit where

he’ll share eerie stories from surviving passengers of the ship and some stories from their family members.

“You’re not just looking at the placards and reading the stories and facts—you’re getting something extra with this special tour, you’re getting more stories,” Lauer says. “Like Captain Smith’s wife saying she saw her husband’s figure in the drawing room the night he passed away and that’s how she knew he died. Just when you thought The Bedford by Martha Stewart couldn’t get any better, it did

If you’ve never eaten at The Bedford by Martha Stewart, please do something about that. Designed after Stewart’s Bedford, N.Y., home, this restaurant has an elegance, but is drenched in comforting, homey energy. And if you have already eaten there, it’s time to return, as the culinary team has just overhauled its menu to have a more seafood-focused approach. Before we dive into what’s new, there are some musthave mainstays that are totally worthwhile. First and foremost, order the housemade bread basket, because if you don’t, one will arrive at the table next to yours and it will be painfully apparent that you’re missing out. Another great way to start a meal here is an order of Big Martha’s pierogies. Share an order or

Honey mustard salmon

two with the table and savor the delicious fluffy potato filling that’s been wrapped in delicate dumpling dough and smothered in brown butter sauce. For a sneak peek of the fresh seafood infusion, order the lobster rolls appetizer. Each roll overflows with Maine lobster meat, gets a coating of Meyer lemon aioli , and is then topped with tarragon, celery, capers, chives, and frisée.

Much of the menu comes

from Stewart’s own cookbooks, and the entrée section is where you’ll find some of her finest fish dishes. Order the lemon risotto with sea scallops for something extremely satisfying yet bright and citrusy, or consider the honey mustard salmon, served with wilted spinach and confit shallots, for a rich and savory dinner.

If seafood doesn’t quite tickle your fancy, find a favorite bite in the steak options.

Consider an 8-ounce wagyu filet or a 16-ounce prime New York strip steak for a single portion, or share the 38-ounce tomahawk for two. All steaks are served with braised leek and watercress for a bit of green and with the option of bordelaise or béarnaise sauces.

With mains so satiating, it’s hard to imagine needing side dishes, but after seeing the options, the dishes on this section of the menu might just be too irresistible to skip. Ooey-gooey four-cheese mac and cheese, Big Martha’s potato purée, blistered shishito peppers … no matter which dish you choose, it’s guaranteed to be a hit.

the Meyer lemon drop, a mix of Tito’s vodka, Cointreau and Meyer lemon juice (served in a glass with a sugar rim, of course). For something more spirit-forward, try the Martha-tini, made with Zubrówka Bison Grass vodka, dry vermouth and a lemon twist, or Martha’s Perfect Manhattan, featuring Woodford Reserve bourbon, sweet and dry vermouth, Angostura bitters and Luxardo cherries.

Don’t forget to sip a refreshing cocktail with the decadent meal you’re sure to enjoy here. For something simple and easy to drink, have

Now MGM Grand Garden Arena. Somehow, a show where people sit around a table rolling dice and improvising fantasy stories has become arena-sized entertainment.

Tabletop chaos meets arena spectacle when Dimension 20 brings its signature blend of improv comedy and high fantasy to the Strip with Dimension 20 Live: Viva Más Vegas, a one-shot adventure designed specifically for the stage.

The beloved actual-play series, created by Game Master Brennan Lee Mulligan, has spent years building a devoted following on Dropout’s streaming platform. For the uninitiated, “actual-play” means exactly what it sounds like: Audiences watch players sit down and play Dungeons & Dragons in real time. Mulligan builds the world and voices supporting characters while core players each control a single character. Their decisions, combined with dice rolls, determine how the story unfolds. It’s improv comedy plus epic fantasy, and the magic comes from watching triumphs and disasters play out completely unscripted.

Fantasy High, a coming-of-age story set at a high school for heroes, the show has explored candy kingdoms, haunted New York streets, sci-fi anarchies and Regency-era fae courts.

Dimension 20 has crossover appeal, too. Celebrity guests have popped into different seasons, including Critical Role’s Dungeon Master Matthew Mercer and RuPaul’s Drag Race stars Jujubee and Bob the Drag Queen.

For Dimension 20 Live, Mulligan will be joined by the show’s usual cast of characters: Lou Wilson, Ally Beardsley, Emily Axford, Zac Oyama, Siobhan Thompson and Brian Murphy. The chemistry among this core cast is a big reason Dimension 20 works. Over the years, they’ve guided fans through medieval intrigue, magical malls and sci-fi heists.

8 p.m. Nov. 1, starting at $89.50 plus tax and mgmgrand.fee. mgmresorts.com

Dimension 20 Live is set as a one-shot, which means it’s a single, self-contained adventure. Who knows what lurks around the corner, be it the Rat King, a Celestial Paragon or maybe even the Faerie Mafia? The only certainty is uncertainty. In Dimension 20 Live, even the cast doesn’t know what’s coming next until the dice decide.

Mulligan’s reputation borders on legendary. His quick wit, encyclopedic imagination and willingness to push players into impossible situations help to create a show that consistently blends absurd humor with unexpectedly poignant storytelling.

The streaming show runs as an anthology series, with each season transporting viewers to entirely new worlds with fresh characters. Episodes clock in at two to three hours, packed with dense lore and house rules. Since launching in 2018 with

The leap from streaming to MGM Grand Garden Arena allows for immersive staging, elaborate visuals and full theatrical production. The players may still be huddled around a table rolling dice, but now thousands become part of an experience that is wholly unscripted and unpredictable. For fans, it’s a chance to experience the cast’s energy in person. For newcomers, it’s an entry point into what Mulligan calls “one of the most surprising, heartfelt and hilarious shows you’ve ever watched.”

Don’t know what you’re in for? That’s exactly the point.

Get in the spirit of the holiday with two of Westgate Las Vegas’ Halloweeninspired suites. (Westgate Las Vegas’ many year-round themed suites have become popular destinations for visitors.) Spirits rise and shine inside the two themed areas, the Day of The Dead Suite and the Halloween Suite. The decor makes any stay the perfect backdrop for plenty of frightfully fun photos along with luxurious amenities that make for an unforgettable experience.

“No one does themed suites like Westgate,” Dawn Rawle, senior vice president of marketing and entertainment at Westgate Las Vegas, said in a release. “Our Halloween and Day of the Dead Suites are immersive, imaginative and full of unexpected delights. Whether you’re visiting for a content shoot, an unforgettable getaway or simply to embrace the spirit of the season, these suites promise a stay you won’t soon forget.”

A vibrant and bold color explosion defines Dia de Los Muertos, also known as Day of the Dead, a Mexican holiday right after Halloween that celebrates loved ones who have passed. One of the biggest symbols of the holiday are skulls or calaveras, often bejeweled and decorated with bright, rich colors and floral patterns. The 1,125 square-foot Day of the Dead Suite sports one bedroom and two bathrooms with a king-sized bed. Amenities include wet bar with coffee maker, microwave and fridge, and flat-screen

televisions. The living and dining spaces have beautiful Mexican- and Day of the Dead-inspired furnishings and brightly colored tiles and tapestries, with a dynamic painting of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo hanging on one of the walls.

Two selfie hot spots include the living room wall decorated in a series of hand-painted Day of the Dead skull masks and an ornate flower wall next to the guest bathroom. For relaxation, enjoy comfortable chaise lounges and two deep-seated tubs for soaking.

The fright-filled Halloween Suite is spooky and sinister at every turn. Painted with black walls and ceiling, the 1,160-square-foot, one-bedroom, two-bathroom suite is packed with cool and hauntingly stylish decor. The wet bar amenities

include sink, fridge and coffee maker. The dining table is covered in Halloween-inspired tchotchkes like pumpkins and spiders. (Be careful what’s lurking under the table!)

In the bedroom you’ll find a kingsized bed, red-lit lamps and faux-flame

chandeliers with a giant spider that made its web above the bed. Inside the bathroom, with black sink and black deep-seated tub, be careful what lingers in the corner of the shower! Two highback chairs situated near the window with black-out and black-lace curtains allow for relaxation and views of the city. Creepy writing on the walls and a book of dark stories by poet Edgar Allen Poe add to the overall air of creepiness, yet gothic romance, of the room.

In the living and dining spaces, you’ll find frights like a full-sized, interactive Pennywise, holding his distinctive red balloon. Gargoyles and skulls decorate the walls along with spooky framed photos. Michael Myers paraphernalia hangs on one wall while menacing clown statues hide around the corners and in the closets. The gothic-inspired black leather furnishings and black-lace curtains give off an air of dark luxury, and hours can be spent perusing all the themed decor strategically placed throughout the suite.

“Sweet, sinister, and just as twisted as Jack the Clown himself, this vibrant concoction is pure carnival chaos in a glass. It’s bright, bold, and dangerously drinkable.”

Universal Horror Unleashed offers a variety of cocktails to get you in a macabre mood

Just across Interstate 15 from the neon-lit Las Vegas Strip sits a giant, rundown and eerie warehouse. The contents (and its inhabitants) inside are the stuff of nightmares, scares that’ll keep you awake at night. Nope, there’s no pleasant dreams inside Universal Horror Unleashed at AREA15, the city’s newest immersive attraction that will turn your hair white and your bones cold. Four year-round haunted houses inspired by Universal’s cinematic horrors comes to life: Universal Monsters, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Scarecrow: the Reaping and The Exorcist: Believer. But the frights don’t freeze there. From the moment you step inside the warehouse, there are spooky sights and sounds at every turn. Amid all the horrifying (and darn fun!) houses and interactive areas, 21-and-over guests can gain some liquid courage by visiting UHU’s three distinct watering holes: Jack’s Alley, The Boiler Bar and Premiere House. Each bar offers a menu of creatively fun and terrifying handcrafted

cocktails and a few exclusive ones.

“Creating these cocktails was an incredibly fun and collaborative process,” said Darci Davalos, Universal Horror Unleashed assistant director of food and beverage. “We worked closely with local mixologists and our team in Hollywood, tasting our way through more than 75 different recipes to find the perfect lineup. The most exciting part was imagining the personalities behind each drink and bringing them to life through bold flavors, unexpected ingredients and immersive presentation. From smoky reveals to custom drinkware, every detail was inspired by the sinister world of Universal Horror Unleashed. We wanted each cocktail to feel like a story in a glass, and the result is a collection that’s as theatrical and thrilling as the experience itself.”

Check out three standout cocktails as well as Davalos’ descriptions: Green Dread from Premiere House, Severed Pair from Boiler Bar and Jack’s Juice from Jack’s Alley.

Bourbon, spiced pear, baking spice and aromatic bitters

“A horrifying twist on the Old-Fashioned, it’s equal parts cocktail and performance. Served in a custom barrel lantern, it invites guests to lift the lid and release a swirl of aromatic smoke. Within lies a rich, spiced blend of bourbon and pear, deepened by baking spices and bitters.”

“This eerie elixir is a shareable showstopper, conjured for six brave souls. (It) balances the herbaceous depth of Luxardo Del Santo with the tropical sweetness of coconut syrup, sharpened by a splash of lime. Smooth and sinister, it finishes with a silky chill that lingers like a ghostly whisper.”

The Neon Museum recently unveiled its latest addition

It’s always a good time to visit the Neon Museum and explore Las Vegas’ fascinating history through its signage, and if you haven’t been for a while, there’s an exceptionally good reason to revisit—the historical hot spot relit the Dunes Hotel & Casino sign, a piece of artwork that represents the first major Strip property to leave us by implosion. Talk about a trendsetter!

This restoration was no easy feat. In fact, our friends at the Neon Museum said it looked like the sign itself had come straight from the wreckage when they acquired it. That’s where Jesse Hartlauer and his company, Hartlauer Signs, come in. They make all kinds of displays, from the road signs you see

to the directional signage that helps visitors navigate casino floors, but by far the most intriguing area of the workshop (and one Hartlauer clearly feels passionately about) is the neon workshop.

“The new styles are really modern and really basic and standard colors, where the old signs were fun,” Hartlauer says. “They were colorful with neon all over them. They flashed, they just came alive when you looked at them. I prefer the old ones, myself, a little bit. The craftsmanship and everything along with it is a part of our history.”

The sign that was relit is a 10-foot entrance sign from the property. It mirrors the shape and style of The Dunes Hotel and Casino’s grand, 150-foot neon

sign, but actually doesn’t feature any neon. It’s lit by three internal lighting units to create a backlighting effect and about 100 candelabra lights that flash to create the classic sparkling effect many marquees have.

“When we take these signs down, usually we’re not thinking of Neon Museums and stuff like that,” Hartlauer says. “They hook a crane on it and sling it out of there. Throw it on a truck, lay it on its face, and take it to the back of the yard. It sits around for years until somebody realizes that it’s got a home and we can bring it back to life again.”

The metal structure is entirely original and had all of its bumps and bruises tapped out by Hartlauer’s crew before

being repainted. It would be logical to assume then comes the struggle of trying to fix the electrical components that made the sign shine, but in reality 95 percent of the original sockets were in working condition before restoration. The real struggle came when trying to refurbish the rich orange bottom half of the sign, which needed to be replicated and installed.

Remarkably, this isn’t the first run-in Hartlauer has had with the Dunes signage. His company, which opened in Vegas more than 30 years ago, frequently repaired the massive main sign that greeted people as they came to town.

“When I moved to this town in 1979, off the I-15, there was an exit called Flamingo Dunes, and when you got off there, it didn’t go west. It only went east to the Strip. And that was one of the first things you’d see when you came into town and you got onto the Strip …

The Dunes was always intriguing, you know, kind of a fun hotel. It always had a lot of action going.”
