One Week? Not Enough

It’s absolutely incredible to see not only the success of AREA15 in Las Vegas since it opened five years ago, but how much it continues to expand and grow its mind-blowing lineup of entertainment options. Yes, you may already know about Omega Mart, The Beast, the axe throwing, the zipline, the art installations and so much more, but get ready for even more!

This week’s issue of Las Vegas Magazine is dedicated to AREA15’s Zone 2, which not only includes the sensational Universal Horror Unleashed (unlike any haunted house you’ve ever seen, trust us) but a lineup of creative entrepreneurship only AREA15 can pull off. Check our roundup of what you can expect from this allin-one entertainment destination in the coming days, weeks and months (“In the Zone,” p. 30)

Another major source of excitement is Mexican Independence Day week, which Las Vegas celebrates like few other cities. Whether you’re here for comedy, music or a little of both, the more than a dozen options this week will have your head spinning (“The Sound of Freedom,” p. 32). And we’ve also highlighted two separate acts related to the week’s theme: Comedian Felipe Esparza at MGM Grand (“Fooling Around,” p. 42) and pop sensation Alejandro Fernández (“A Smooth Blend,” p. 22)

Our music coverage doesn’t stop there. Janet Jackson is coming back to Vegas to finish up her Resorts World Las Vegas residency, and it is a show you will regret missing (“Take a Trip to Rhythm Nation,” p. 12)

Hitting the town tonight? Stop by your concierge to pick up a copy of our sister publication, VEGAS2GO.

Hungry? We’re featuring two giants of the Strip: Giada at The Cromwell (“A Fare to Remember,” p. 16 ) and Prime Steakhouse at Bellagio (“Magic All Around,” p. 28)

Take a Trip to Rhythm Nation

This pop icon will only be in Las Vegas for a few more days, so get your tickets now!

If you haven’t seen Janet Jackson’s Las Vegas Strip residency yet, there’s not much time left, as the superstar wraps her successful run with just six shows remaining—Sept. 10, 13-14, 17 and 1920. And for fans of hers, this is a show that can’t be missed. Think astonishing visuals, fashionable ’fits, smooth moves and more than 40 hits.

That’s right, we said 40! The singer uses medleys to seamlessly move from favorites like “2nite” and “Slolove” to chart toppers like “Escapade” and “What Have You Done For Me Lately” (spoken word intro included). And you might find yourself thinking, “That’s got to be close to her entire discography, right?” Not even close. The songstress has released more than 150 album tracks across all her studio albums, including 70 singles!

And this show is oh so fun to watch. The scenery changes every few songs, and everything on the stage is dynamic, meaning there’s always something new to look at—not that you’ll be able to look away from Jackson herself. Not only is she strikingly beautiful with honey blonde curls and glittery makeup, but

the icon’s dance moves are mesmerizing and seemingly effortless, yet also impossible to replicate, other than by the talented dance crew Jackson graciously shares the stage with, of course.

It’s hard to tell who’s working harder, the wardrobe department or the wind machine operators, because they both have the chanteuse looking absolutely fine. With each outfit change comes a stylish masterpiece, usually accented by chunky boots and visual elements that flow with the gusts of air that push back Jackson’s hair (and hopefully keep her cool). What’s particularly fun about the costuming is each piece is very Janet and pays homage to ’80s and ’90s looks, but is also so chic and modern.

To make your evening extra special, consider booking a VIP package. With various seating options available, packages include VIP entry, two complimentary beverages, a souvenir red carpet photo, a special gift created just for VIP ticket holders and a commemorative lanyard with laminate. –Em Jurbala

Come and Join the Fun

This

entertainer’s history-making show is an absolute blast for every age group

I was never able to see Elvis Presley when he performed at the International, and so I can’t begin to imagine the energy level from the crowd at just one of his shows. But I have seen Barry Manilow, who performs in the same space as the King did those many decades ago. And I’m here to tell ya: I’ve seen a lot of concerts in a lot of venues, and nothing in my experience matches the electricity generated by a Manilow crowd.

I’d go so far as to say it’s what keeps Manilow going. He has nothing left to prove; he’s earned the right to retire and rest on his many laurels. But yeah, if I was in his shoes and got the reaction he does every time he steps onto a stage, I’d probably be performing into my golden years, too!

Ask any Manilow fan who’s been to countless Manilow performances, and they’ll all say the same thing: Barry is the ultimate showman, a consummate entertainer who leaves everything on the field every single time. He may have just turned 82, but this dude’s stamina is legendary. And his fans are with him every step of the way, waiting for hours sometimes after a show to pose with him for photographs and autographs. We’ve all seen those concerts where entertainers point into the audience as if they spotted someone they know; at a Manilow concert, it’s a pretty good bet Manilow actually does!

And good news: Manilow has been given a lifetime residency by Westgate Las Vegas, meaning that the fun won’t be stopping any time soon. And since Manilow broke Elvis’ record of shows at the International Theater last year, each performance is a new chapter in his storied career.

But of course, the history-making run is only a small part of it. It’s ultimately hearing the man himself sing “Mandy,” “I Write the Songs,” “Copacabana” and so many more fan favorites. –Ken Miller

A Fare to Remember

Dine on innovative Italian cuisine at this longtime Strip hot spot

We’ll make it simple for you—dine at Giada at The Cromwell. See? Easy. We’ve answered the most common Las Vegas question, “Where should we eat?” However, there’s nothing common about Giada.

The star chef and TV personality has created an environment that puts amazing eats together with amazing Strip views. Through the floor-to-ceiling, open-air windows, indulge in views of the fountains’ show across the street, and if you dine as twilight approaches, you’ll get the thrill of watching the neon turn on up and down the famed boulevard. This all serves as the perfect backdrop to a delish menu of Italian eats with California influences—fresh fare that marries traditional cuisine with Giada’s innovative and creative culinary touches.

The menu is packed with meats and seafood, but don’t skip the handmade pasta here. Giada’s Signature Lemon Spaghetti (pictured right) is light, simple and piquant with shrimp, mascarpone, lemon and basil. For something heartier, the agnolotti with braised short rib and ricotta in a brown butter sauce and the ravioli with Maine lobster in orange saffron butter should both do the trick. Traditional eats like veal chop saltimbocca, grilled branzino and stuffed chicken Parmesan support bigger appetites.

Giada is also celebrated for its heavenly brunch experience. And let us not forget to highlight the restaurant’s dedication to vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free options; just talk with your server about options and the chef can whip you up something special. The addition of handcrafted specialty cocktails with Italian inspirations makes Giada the perfect spot to dine—just like we told you! –Kiko Miyasato

Vibes, Views and Variety

Keep the party going from lunch to late night at this new rooftop hot spot

Cool cocktails, cool views and cool vibes make Bottled Blonde Las Vegas the new exciting hot spot for visitors looking for a good time. Situated right along Las Vegas Boulevard and anchored by the Grand Bazaar Shops, this multilevel venue is a welcoming environment for people looking for that nightlife alternative.

Cool vibes. During the day Bottled Blonde Las Vegas welcomes families to enjoy the food and atmosphere, but after 9 p.m. it turns into a 21-and-over nightlife experience. “Bottled Blonde Las Vegas is a hybrid venue that is built around fun—food, beverage and entertainment,” said Bryan Bass, chief marketing officer. “We like to say from lunch to late night. As the sun goes down and the neon turns on, it gets more of a high-energy bar environment—something that is more approachable and casual than the typical Vegas nightclub but still all based around a fun experience.”

Cool views. It’s hard to beat Bottled Blonde Las Vegas’ rooftop when it comes to views of the Strip combined with a large indoor-outdoor environment. “The energy feels really good on the rooftop—and there’s the great patio with an amazing view,” Bass said. Those views not only include up and down the Strip, but a fantastic shot of the fountains show at Bellagio.

Cool cocktails. Two large 360-degree bars (one on the ground floor, one on the rooftop) are where the bartenders are whipping up tasty cocktails. The list of cocktail names lets guests know this venue is meant for good-time drinking—Sip Happens (vodka and Red Bull), Emotional Damage (bourbon and passion fruit) ... the list goes on. But over-the-top fun lies in the large-format cocktails, a definite must if you’re with a group of peeps. Go for the Strawberry Pump, made with Tito’s vodka, strawberry syrup, lemon juice and lemonade, served in a vessel shaped like a gas pump. The Capri Sin is a throwback to the childhood favorite drink Capri Sun, but this behemoth is an adult version with its blend of Casamigos blanco tequila, Aperol, lemonade, prickly pear syrup and lemon juice served in that classic pouch with a straw. –Kiko Miyasato

Get Your Game On

Allegiant Stadium is going to be absolutely rocking in the next few weeks, with the Raiders vs. the Los Angeles Chargers on Sept. 15, vs. the Chicago Bears on Sept. 28, vs. the Tennessee Titans on Oct. 12, and vs. the Kansas City Chiefs on Oct. 19. And if you’re planning on being there but don’t want to deal with the hassle of parking at the stadium (or paying those high parking prices), we’ve got great news: You can bypass all that at WSKY Stadium, a terrific restaurant and bar just steps away from the stadium.

Park in one of the 638 spots available (free on nonevent days) and get things started with cocktails like the Spiced Apple, made with Bacardi, agave, lime juice and apple juice, served in a glass with a cinnamon raw sugar-lined rim, and the Spicy Pina-Rita, made with Ghost tequila, pineapple and lime juice and agave.

Fan of Italian sandwiches? The Italian Grinder is one of the best in the city with salami, carving board ham and spicy capicola on French bread, covered with smoked provolone, shredded lettuce, red

Entrées run the gamut from steak frites and fish and chips, made with beer-battered white fish and served with onion hush puppies, french fries and coleslaw, to WSKY salmon, served with Dijon honey glaze, Frisco pilaf and veggies.

For dessert, the churro donuts are so much fun, served with key lime or WSKY caramel sauce. –Ken Miller

A Smooth Blend

Mexican artist continues a passion for many different genres

Go to just one performance by Alejandro Fernández and you’ll be convinced: This man has music in his blood. The Mexican singer, the son of ranchera legend Vicente Fernández, made his first appearance onstage at one of his father’s concerts when he was just 5 years old. He may have ended that appearance in tears after forgetting the lyrics to the song he was supposed to sing, but his career certainly took off following that inauspicious start.

Fernández released his first album in 1992, and since then he’s branched out into mainstream pop from traditional Mexican music and has collaborated with international stars including Rod Stewart, Placido Domingo, Christina Aguilera and Beyoncé, as well as with his father.

Fernández’s live shows balance the ranchera style with more modern pop, with Fernández switching out of his traditional charro suit as he transitions musical styles. His efforts over the years—17 albums in all—have led to four Latin Grammy Awards and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, as well as an induction into the Billboard Latin Music Hall of Fame in 2016. His hits span many different genres, and fans can look forward to hearing favorites like “Sé que te duele” and “Caballero.”

To celebrate Mexican Independence Day in Las Vegas, there’s no better choice than a Mexican icon who’s committed to exploring his musical independence. –Ken Miller

Friends With Benefits

Justin Graves

There’s no one more hype working on the Las Vegas Strip than Justin Graves. In fact, you can call him the hype man in addition to his official title of play maker at Play Playground at Luxor. “This is a playground, come and have fun,” he says. “Run around, sweat, play the games, make some noise.” And while you’re doing all that, you’ll spot Graves having fun right along with guests.

When he joined Play Playground over a year ago, he was hired on as a play maker,

someone to help people play the more than 20 immersive games. “But I can’t sit still and stay to one area, especially when I see people having a good time,” Graves says. “So I started getting so good at being a hype man that they were like, ‘Justin, do your thing,’ and they gave me a megaphone and they let me do my thing. I put a little extra sauce into it.”

Full of personality and then some, Graves’ talents expand into his other jobs, writing and acting. In fact, the day after

• Libation • Shark Bait

we met with him for this story, he was off to a production company in L.A. to discuss a couple scripts he had written. “I’m a struggling artist, but it’s all good.”

So, as he waits for his big break, he keeps working his talents and his knack for getting people to have fun at Play Playground. “I get to be myself at this job, which is dope,” he says. “I get to be a hype man and have a good time, and it’s my job to make sure others are having a good time, too.” –Kiko Miyasato

From views to food, Prime Steakhouse is a Vegas gem

There are steakhouses, and then there’s Prime Steakhouse at Bellagio. The moment you settle into your table just as the Bellagio fountains explode into their famous dance, you know this is a dining experience you’ll

remember for a long time. It’s the kind of Vegas moment that makes you think, “This is why people come to this town.”

After a recent renovation, chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s fountainside gem looks better than ever. Outside, you have the water; inside, it’s all elegant French blue and caramel accents, Italian damask fabrics and Venetian chandeliers that catch the fountain’s light just right. Think luxurious Parisian salon meets modern Vegas glamour. Wherever you sit, you’re exactly in the right spot.

Take a mental (or literal) picture of your surroundings, because once the food starts flowing, everything else will soon recede into the background. The evening begins with a bread basket featuring house-made pretzels (to die for), crusty baguettes and cheese onion rolls. This is a steakhouse, yes, but do let the seafood set the tone: Maine lobster, oysters, shrimp cocktail and salmon tartare with lotus chips arranged like edible architecture, accompanied by an arsenal of house-made sauces from classic cocktail sauce to ponzu wasabi with sesame chili oil.

On a recent visit, we were treated to bacon—thick-cut and theatrical, arriving under a glass cloche filled with aromatic smoke, seasoned with peppercorn, papri-

ka and maple syrup. It’s a palate primer, along with a seasonal summer salad of heirloom tomatoes and berries dressed in habanero champagne vinaigrette.

At this point, maybe move the bread basket away from your reach, because you’re about to dig into what you really came here for. The F1 Holstein New York strip is a robust choice, while the filet mignon’s Brandt Beef California provenance is evident in every juicy bite. Meanwhile, the Kuro Blue Label wagyu ribeye is pure poetry, beef so perfectly marbled it’s like biting into butter. Prime’s signature sauce—a mix of rice wine, soy mirin, butter and lime—adds an unexpected Asian twist that just works.

French technique transforms traditional sides into revelations. The Parmesan cheese soufflé with truffle butter defies gravity and expectations, while broccoli turns elegant when crusted with pistachios and dressed in hazelnut vinaigrette. Even the traditional mashed potatoes feel special here—when asked about the ratio of butter to potatoes, our server, Vicente (who has been at Prime since it opened in 1998), smiled and said, “It’s best not to think about it.”

Seafood mains deserve equal attention. The Chilean sea bass arrives with a mushroom crust and lemon emulsion, demonstrating the kitchen’s philosophy of letting great ingredients shine. Seared, the fish is rich and tender and holds its own against the more muscular menu items.

Save room for dessert because at Prime Steakhouse, this final act does not go unnoticed. On this summer night, we finished strong with the signature Basque cheesecake, lemon meringue pie and Black Forest chocolate cake.

Indulgent? Yes. Unforgettable? Absolutely. In a city where fabulous dining choices compete for your attention and calories, Prime Steakhouse gives you something no other steakhouse can: a front-row seat to Vegas magic, where every course is choreographed as perfectly as the fountains dancing just beyond your table.

Universal Horror Unleashed is just the beginning of AREA15’s newest expansion

When AREA15 opened in 2020, Las Vegas already had plenty of over-the-top attractions. What it didn’t have was a 40-acre playground where you could walk through an alien grocery store, throw axes, stumble upon a massive art installation and have a cocktail in a digital forest. And now this parallel-to-the-Strip destination is pushing even further into uncharted territory with Zone 2, its latest expansion. Zone 2 transforms AREA15 from a single 200,000-square-foot venue into

a sprawling “retailtainment” district that defies easy categorization. The cen terpiece is Universal Horror Unleashed, Universal Destinations & Experiences’ first-ever year-round, fully immersive horror experience.

The expansion brings dozens of newly installed sculptures and murals, pushing AREA15’s collection to more than 60 sculptures and 30 murals, officially mak ing it the largest permanent installation of monumental festival art in the world. Walking through the massive space feels

like wandering onto the set of a sci-fi movie where the art director had both unlimited budget and boundless creativity.

rigging,” he says. “Come back in a month, and we’re going to have a psychedelic carousel right there.”

Despite major corporate partners like Universal moving in, what makes AREA15 a beloved Vegas destination is its commitment to local artists, who are given the space to create a world as weird and as wonderful as their visions allow.

“Art is part of our fundamental ethos and brand value,” Winston Fisher, AREA15’s CEO, tells Las Vegas Magazine “We don’t even think about it; it’s just what we do. (One of our new attractions will be) an experience called Tiny Worlds, where local artists build these micro villages. We just put art everywhere.”

After Tiny Worlds, how do you balance the scale? With a large commercial jet bursting out of a building, of course. Coming soon, a Boeing 747 from Burning Man is being reimagined as a dining and nightlife venue, and Fisher can barely contain his excitement about it.

“I’m very excited about the 747 that’s going to be an event space. We can throw parties in there and set up lighting and

The expansion includes other sensory pleasures, too: new bars like the Looper Bar, food options including The Beast Mobile Food Trailer, and retail kiosks that somehow make shopping feel like performance art. Chilango’s Tacos, Saint Honoré Doughnuts & Beignets and Nacho Daddy will join the culinary scene, because immersive art works up quite an appetite. Also, guests can now travel between zones on the Grounded Intra-district Tram (GIT), because why walk when you can ride a futuristic transport system?

It turns out that AREA15’s commitment to constant evolution has become its best attraction. This isn’t a static theme park or traditional entertainment complex but a living experiment in what happens when you give creative minds space to build impossible things.

The Massive: Galactic Zoo event on Sept. 13 demonstrates this philosophy, transforming the entire district into an “otherworldly wonderland.”

Five years in and 15 million visitors strong, AREA15 is just getting started.

There’s no end to the variety as part of Mexican Independence Day celebrations

What more is there to say about this sensational entertainer? Only that if you don’t know who he is, look around to make sure you aren’t living in a cave! To say the former Menudo member made the most out of his solo career opportunity is the understatement of the century. For 1999’s “Livin’ la Vida Loca” alone (which topped both the Billboard Hot 100 and UK Singles charts), Martin could rest on his laurels. But, as he would go on to prove, that was just setting the table for an unprecedented career.

In addition to selling more than 70 million records worldwide and winning countless Grammys and Latin Grammys in the process, Martin has also become an acting force, garnering an Emmy nomination for his role in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story in 2018. He’s also appeared on Broadway and founded The Ricky Martin Foundation in 2004 to combat human trafficking. But c’mon: Did you really need me to tell you all this?

standpoint is the generational gap between the stars. Teo González, who’s been at his stand-up comedy craft for decades in comedy clubs, is sharing the stage with Mario Aguilar, who’s known more for his viral content. It’s sure to be a big part of what will make this one of the most memorable comedy performances of the week. Young or old, this is going to make you laugh. A lot.

For more than 30 years, this norteño band (translated as “The Toucans of Tijuana”) has been influencing other artists in Mexico’s Pacific states. Their melodious sound is instantly infectious, and has led to numerous awards, both in music and in film. The proof of their wideranging appeal? In 2019, they became the first regional Mexican music group to perform at Coachella! They are incredibly prolific, releasing 30 albums over the last 31 years and winning a 2012 Latin Grammy for album 365 Dias. They

Los Tucanes de Tijuana

are also the first norteño band to win an international film award: The Un Certain Regard Angel Film Award at the Monaco International Film Festival for their participation in the documentary Los ilegales

And they have a Las Vegas connection, receiving a star on the Las Vegas Walk of Fame in 2008!

Few Mexican bands have the sound of Caifanes, a quartet whose rock music sound has been likened to The Cure, The Beatles and King Crimson.

When they burst on the scene in

the ’80s, they even looked the part, dressing in black with makeup and disheveled hair.

Their crossover success to America was complete when, in 1992, the group sold out the Hollywood Palladium with a strong lineup of songs like “No Dejes Que (Don’t Let It),” “Estas Dormida (You’re Sleeping),” Debajo de Tu Piel (“Under Your Skin)” and “Nubes (Clouds).” They would later open for The Rolling Stones in Mexico City in 1994, as well as participating in Peter Gabriel’s WOMAD Festival.

Even though Caifanes has not released a new studio album since El Nervio Del Volcan in 1994, their influence remains strong, and they continue a rigorous touring schedule.

This group from Mazatlan, Sinaloa (hence the “MS” in its name), specializes in the banda style of regional Mexican music, emphasizing wind, brass and percussion. They’ve released 20 albums since forming in 2003, and Qué Bendición reached No. 1 on the Billboard Latin albums chart, while the lovely “Solo Con Verte” achieved a remarkable 12 weeks on the Monitor Latino singles chart.

The group has also collected a substantial number of awards during their existence, including

multiple Billboard Latin Music Awards: 2015 Regional Song of the Year and Hot Latin Song, both for “Hermosa Experincia”; 2016 Hot Latin Song and Regional Mexican Song, both for “Mi Razon De Ser”; and 2017 Regional Mexican Album of the Year for Qué Bendición, as well as Regional Mexican Song of the Year for “Solo Con Verte.”

This is sure to be one of the highlights of the week. Palamozo Norteño is a “dream team” of four of Mexico’s most legendary norteño artists—Lalo Mora, Eliseo Robles, Rosendo Cantu and Raul Hernandez. Their Las Vegas performance is part of their 2025 La Borrachera Perfecta Tour, and their combination of contemporary and traditional music is sure to pack the house.

Few regional Mexican music figures have enjoyed the meteoric rise that Carín León did after launching his solo career in 2018. (He had previously been a member of Grupo Arranke.) His distinct voice is the perfect complement for his melodies combining banda, mariachi, grupero and even country, soul and pop.

His crossover appeal in America was apparent when he appeared on NPR’s Tiny Desk in 2022. (He would return to the show earlier this year, and seems destined to be a regular guest.)

His accolades include a Latin Grammy for Best Norteño Album for 2023 opus Colmillo de Leche, as well as a win in Best Contemporary Mexican Music Album for 2024’s Boca Chueca, Vol. 1.

Easily one of the most successful Mexican pop rock bands of the last 20 years, Reik has enjoyed enormous crossover success, winning awards and selling tons of copies in the process. Most of Reik’s seven studio albums have either gone gold or platinum—or both. It won a Latin Billboard Music

Reik

Award for Latin Pop Song of the Year with “Me Niego,” as well as a Latin Grammy Award for Best Pop Album by a Duo or Group with Vocals for 2009’s Un Dia Mas. The band has collaborated with artists like Diane Warren, Ricky Martin and J Balvin, and it looks like Reik is showing absolutely no signs of slowing down.

Few current stand-up comedians take the approach that Alfred Robles does. To classify his act as “comedy” just doesn’t do it justice; he’s more of an equal-opportunity self-help guru to his audiences—in the most hilarious way possible. He’ll routinely bring audience members up to discuss topics that most wouldn’t consider ideal topics for a night of comedy (divorce, prison, drug use, etc.). And yes, he will make anything funny while getting the whole

audience involved in the discussion. Robles has been hard at work refining his comedy chops with everything from the #FluffyBreaksEven World Tour, Staaand Upp on Starz, and Stand Up and Deliver on NUVOtv. He’s a favorite of comedian like Gabriel Iglesias, and as soon as you catch a glimpse of his unique style, he’ll be one of your favorites too.

throughout its career, specializing in the hits of the 1980s with a distinct sound. (It recently achieved Gold Record Certification for En Vivo Desde la Arena Ciudad de Mexico.)

This week’s show is part of the group’s Stereo Disco Tour, and the name says it all: You’re going to get a serious dose of retro goodness at this show, delivered in a high-powered style. Sing-alongs? Practically mandatory!

Often just called Duelo, this seven-member Mexican norteño band from Roma, Texas, is one of the most prolific of the last 20-plus years, producing no fewer than 20 albums during that time span (under the group names Duelo Norteño and Duelo). And in every effort, the band’s delightful sound never ceases to bring in new fans; in 2009, the group’s Solamento Tu debuted at No. 1 on both the Billboard Top Latin Albums and Regional Mexican Albums charts.

Caesars Palace, 8 p.m. Sept. 14-15, starting at $111 plus tax and fee. ticketmaster.com

As popular as Marco Antonio Solis was with the hugely successful group Los Bukis (which he cofounded in 1975), his solo career has eclipsed that and then some. His output since going solo in 1996 has been steady and very fruitful; he has more than 30 songs on Billboard Tracks chart.

He’s also enjoyed success in the United States, receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2010. Solis has won five Latin Grammy Awards and two Lo Nuestro Awards and been inducted into the Billboard Fame and was recognized as Person of the Year by the Latin Recording Academy. Fans can expect plenty of favorites, including “Se Veia Venir,” “Una Mujer Como Tu,” “Que Pena Me Das” and “Recuerdos, Tristeza, y Soledad.”

Few Mexican artists have the reputation of Chelo, often in the discussion for the best singer that country has ever produced. Still going strong at 81, she has a range that few artists of her caliber can ever come close to achieving; in one year, she recorded five genres— tropical, norteño, ranchero, boleros and cumbias!

Chelo began her career as a vocalist of cumbia group Chelo y su Conjunto before launching a career in the ranchera genre, producing classics like “Mejor Me Voy,” “Que Sacrificio,” “Si Ya Te Vas” and “Ya Me Voy” in the process. She also acted in 13 movies, often with her daughter, Yesenia Flores.

It’s literally a cool experience at all three Minus5 Icebar locations

Winter’s coming! OK, so it’s always winter inside all three Minus5 Icebar locations—The Linq Promenade, The Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian Resort and The Shoppes at Mandalay Place. It’s freezing, the temps kept at 23 degrees Fahrenheit, but it’s totally fun. As your nose slowly turns cold, you’ll warm your body with cocktails, and the fact that admission includes

your choice of wearing a parka or faux fur coat and gloves. Stepping inside any of the Icebars is such a cool experience (yes, literally and figuratively!) as you’ll spot all manner of ice (90 tons of it!) from the walls and seating to the sculpture and glassware. The company procures the clearest ice possible, created by a special process that removes all air bubbles, and all the ice sculptures start off as 250-pound blocks of ice that are then carved by professional ice carvers. Return visits are a must, as all three locations refresh the sculptures and themes quarterly. Each Minus5 Icebar is designed with playful sculptures and interactive scenes; gloves will be hard to keep on because you’ll constantly want to conduct photo shoots so the folks back home can check out such a cool Las Vegas experience. It’s fun for the whole family with children welcome from opening till 9 p.m.; after 9 p.m. each location is 21+.

“There is no time limit at Icebar, and

we often see guests vying for longest stay, but I’d say our average guests enjoy the Icebar for 45 minutes to an hour,” says Blake Nightingale, Minus5 Icebar general manager and marketing director. “We provide all the gear to keep you warm, as well as keep each bar full of so many ways to engage and entertain within the experience, that many don’t realize just how long they’ve lasted. … Our founder discovered the concept cruising around the globe and instantly knew that Las Vegas was the perfect place to literally bring the coolest bar to the Strip! Our goal is to bring a truly unique and immersive experience to Las Vegas with unbeatable hospitality and great value. I believe we should be on everyone’s itinerary because we accomplish all that in the coolest and freshest way we know how!”

MINUS5 ICEBAR AT THE SHOPPES AT MANDALAY PLACE (702.740.5800)

This location is the longest running of all three locations and opened in 2008.

The Shoppes at Mandalay Place
Frosted Berries

When you first walk in, you’ll discover an ode to the Arctic, with pictures set in ice of animals and scenery native to that part of the world. As you explore, check out the re-creation of the Zoltar Speaks game, made completely of ice, from the movie Big. There is a section tucked away that takes guests under the sea with floating jellyfish everywhere. There is a Viking ship you can sit in, decorated with Viking swords and flags. Take a pic while sitting on a throne

made of ice with a giant bear carved into it. And the coolest feature of this Icebar is the new vintage arcade section with images of old-school games, Nintendo controllers and an actual video arcade machine set in ice, on which you can play games like Pac-Man, Space Invaders and Dig Dug.

Our cocktail pick: Frosted Berries, a light and fruity cocktail made with Skyy vodka, peach schnapps and white cranberry juice.

MINUS5 ICEBAR AT THE LINQ PROMENADE (702.586.8925)

The largest of all three locations, this Minus5 Icebar has a ton of cool activations. The minute you walk in, you’ll be greeted by a very Vegas-y display with slot machines made of ice and a roulette wheel and cards set in ice. Any fans of horror movies? Don’t skip taking photos with the ice display dedicated to horror movies with ice carvings of characters like Pennywise and Leatherface. Fans of music festivals? Check out the DJ booth and speakers set in ice, trippy rave-like graphics and a TV displaying videos of festivals from around the globe. The mock fireplace with a giant tiki head made of ice is perfect for a group shot and check-in for your mission to Mars, with space-inspired ice carvings including a huge spaceship. A bonus of this Icebar is its loungelike space right outside along the Promenade, perfect for people-watching and enjoying another cocktail.

Our cocktail pick: Arctic Sunset, a fruity punch of Bacardi dragon berry rum, pineapple juice, lemon lime soda and a grenadine float.

Each location has a unique bundle experience that really builds in value to experience all three Icebars. Combine an ice experience with a yacht rock show at The Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian Resort or with The Booze Cruise cocktail experience at The Linq Promenade. The Fire and Ice Package gets you an Icebar experience, access to 1923

Prohibition Bar and daiquiri cocktails, as well as a couple of take-home souvenirs. Recently launched is the “Ultimate Polar Passport.”

The biggest bundle available gets you three experiences and three cocktails! It includes entry into all three Icebars, as well as a pass to Dreambox360 and the High Roller observation wheel at The Linq Promenade.

The Minus5 Icebars at The Shoppes at Mandalay Place and The Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian Resort are linked to 1923 Prohibition Bar, and Minus5 Icebar at The Linq Promenade is connected to DreamBox360, an immersive projection experience cocktail room.

Arctic Sunset Ice in da Coconut

Look for the QR codes frozen in ice and scan for videos and photos of cool stuff like some of the most popular ice carvings, how a snowflake forms and the ice caves of Iceland.

At The Grand Canal Shoppes location, on the door to the entrance, look out for the QR code and scan it to pull up a fun scavenger hunt game with clues all around the bar.

All three locations offer Dole Whip and vanilla soft serve cocktails like the Apple Pie with Crown Royal apple whiskey, Fireball whiskey, soft serve and cinnamon, and the Going Bananas with

All cocktails and nonalcoholic cocktails are served in glasses made completely of ice!

MINUS5 ICEBAR AT THE GRAND CANAL SHOPPES AT THE VENETIAN RESORT (702.293.3388)

Any Kenny Chesney fans? The coun-

try superstar finished up a successful residency at neighboring Sphere, and in honor of the occasion, Minus5 Icebar carved out a section made of ice ded-

icated to the music star and his spirit brand, Blue Chair Bay rum. The section is Chesney vibes, with beach-inspired surroundings like Adirondack chairs, palm trees and surfboards and one of the coolest ice sculptures, an ocean wave with ocean spray. Another recent feature is the 1923 Speakeasy Lounge. Sneak past the red curtains of ice and hang out inside this speakeasy with whiskey and gin bottles and vintage photos, all set within ice. Don’t miss the corner dedicated to Japan with a full-size ice samurai, the ode to Krylon spray paint with graffiti painted in the ice, a throne with a shark head carved into it and the dedication to Vegas’ Atomic Age in conjunction with the Atomic Museum, with photos of atomic bomb blasts, gas masks and more, all set within ice.

Our cocktail pick: Ice in da Coconut, in honor of Chesney, made with Blue Chair Bay rum, lime juice and lemon lime soda.

FELIPE ESPARZA brings his irreverent comedy to Las Vegas

If you’re a longtime comedy fan, you know Felipe Esparza. And depending on your age, you know him for different things. If you’re a little older,

you know him from the early 2000s, when he plied his trade in small comedy clubs across the country. If you’re younger, you might know him as the winner of Last Comic Standing (2010), or that actor on Superstore, The Eric Andre Show and Gentefied, or the host of his own long-running podcasts, What’s Up Fool? and History for Foos. And if you just started watching him, you probably know him from his latest stand-up special, Raging Fool, which debuted this February.

It’s a diverse fan base, but one the comedian embraces. “Some people go to see me because of Superstore, like they want to meet me, right? But they don’t necessarily know that I’m a stand-up comic and also have a very big fan base with Generation Z and millennials because of The Eric Andre show,” he said in an exclusive interview with Las Vegas Magazine

Photos by Frankie Leal Photography

The Mexican American Esparza also draws fans from a wide variety of ethnicities and has performed stand-up specials in both English and Spanish. He gets different responses depending on the country he’s in.

“I was in Germany, in Berlin ... I was like the only Mexican in the room, and

the rest were like German people and foreigners. And it was fun to do that show because I surprised everybody with my wits. You know, I killed it. Like they want to bring me back and headline me at that place,” he said.

A show in Australia

was eye-opening for him. “I thought when I got to Australia, (it) was going to be like people who look like that movie, like people who eat alligators or eat kangaroos. (It) was a lot of Latino-Australians who live over there from Bolivia, Peru, Uruguay, and a lot of immigrants from El Salvador.”

9 p.m. Sept 12 and 10 p.m. Sept. 13, starting at $45. axs.com

Currently, Esparza is on his At My Leisure Tour, which has taken him to cities all over the globe since 2024, from the Midwest to Vegas, in all sorts and sizes of venues, from small comedy clubs to larger venues, like the David Copperfield Theater at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, where he plays this week. Different venues require different skill sets onstage.

“Sometimes I gotta really work hard because there might not be a video monitor on both sides. But sometimes I do shows where there’s no video monitor, and I have to project larger and make sure that everybody sees my facial expression—180-degree angle, (so) everybody should see my expression. Then I have to look up for the people up in the balcony.”

He hasn’t played arenas, yet, but is already planning for that 25,000-seat venue, envisioning shorter jokes and a presence that roams across the stage.

What kind of sage advice does Esparza have for fans who are lining up to see him in Vegas? “Get there early.”

Donny Osmond’s latest state-ofthe-art addition to his show will blow you away

Donny Osmond has some favorite segments during his headlining show on the Las Vegas Strip. There’s the “Donny Rap,” the “Request Segment,” and the climactic part of the performance when inflated, blinking Donny Balls are pitched into the audience for celebratory volleying. The latest addition incorporates artificial intelligence, images of him at age 14 and his grandson to make something magical happen: Osmond duetting with his youthful “Puppy Love”-era self.

“That’s becoming another anchor point to the show,” says Osmond. “People have heard about it. They’ve read about it. They see it on YouTube and in interviews I’ve done. Then when that curtain opens up and you see this three-dimensional character that’s me 53 years ago … I hear the ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ coming from the audience.”

Two years in the making, Avatar Donny is a high-tech combination of Osmond’s face as it looked more than a half-century ago and his grandson Daxton, dressed as his grandfather did in the early ’70s when he was frequently featured on covers of teen idol magazines such as Tiger Beat. He’s even wearing a cap that was a trademark back in the day. A fan sent it to him just for the video recording in New York, after which Osmond promptly returned it.

“When I’m looking into the eyes of myself, 53 years ago, can you i magine how strange that is? I’m looking in the mirror 53 years ago,” says Osmond.

So returning fans have something new to witness the next time they buy tickets for Donny. Due to the technology involved, Osmond

needs to be on point during the segment with split-second timing. Other parts of the show are much more casual and spontaneous by design.

“That segment in my show that I call ‘The Request Segment,’ it’s 20 minutes of unknown,” says Osmond. “I don’t know where it’s

gonna go, and like I’ve said in times past, it’s probably my favorite part of the show because it’s unknown. For some people, that would scare them half to death. That’s why I love those parts of my show, because the audience is entertained in real time, if that makes any sense. We’re making it up as we go, and that’s what’s fun for me and the audience.”

Osmond road tested the segment on tours years ago before his solo residency, which he was not able to do with Avatar Donny. “I first saw it in January, when we were recording in New York in a place called ZeroSpace,” says Osmond. “When I first saw a rough export of my face next to his face, it freaked me out … You can only imagine what that felt like.”

It freaked out fans too, some of whom attended a special Tiger Beat Magazine Preshow VIP Celebration in March, featuring a Q&A with editor Ann Moses. Osmond has come full circle since trying to ditch his old image and can now embrace every era of his career.

He especially appreciates the current phase, in which every performance is now enhanced by groundbreaking use of AI. “What’s really cool is that I was the first one to do this,” he says.
