MOUNTAIN FEST

If you need an excuse to go up to Mt. Charleston, here are two. One, it’s usually 30 to 40 degrees cooler up there. Two, Lee Canyon’s Mountain Fest. This free, all-ages event features a concert, craft beer tasting, food vendors and ticketed outdoor activities like disc golf and scenic chair rides. The 12th installment of the festival is expected to exceed last year’s record attendance of 2,000. And there’s plenty of mountain to go around. “People will be dispersed around the resort, some taking part in outdoor activities while others chill and enjoy music,” said Johnny DeGeorge, Lee Canyon’s marketing coordinator. The music lineup includes Carlos Guerrero & Friends playing American roots, local country artist Chris Heers and blues artist Johnny Hazard. Guests are encouraged to arrive early and bring blankets or low-profile chairs. Unlimited beer tasting is available with the purchase of a steel pint glass for $40. 9 a.m., free, Lee Canyon, leecanyonlv.com. –Shannon Miller

PIERCE THE VEIL

Pierce the Veil’s I Can’t Hear You world tour is a rallying cry for the emo kids who never stopped screaming. After almost 20 years, the Fuentes brothers’ San Diego-bred band has evolved from their screamo roots into a force that still ignites every room they enter. Their visceral mix of post-hardcore and metalcore pull listeners back to a time when every lyric felt like an anthem for the broken-hearted. Joining them on the 217-day run are Sleeping With Sirens, with Kellin Quinn’s unmistakable high-pitched croon, and the immortal “King for a Day” collaboration between the two bands. Beach Weather completes the bill in Vegas as nostalgia meets catharsis and early 2000s emo never died. 7 p.m., $208+, PH Live, ticketmaster.com. –Gabriela Rodriguez

If you’re not based in a resort and just want to use the app to nd the things you’re interested in, the search function stands at the ready. Look for Thai cuisine; look for art galleries; look for sports books. Vegas2Go has it all, neatly categorized. And if you need to retrace your steps, “My History” keeps a record of everything you’ve examined in detail.

Spend a day on the links, at the movies or bowl a few frames. Get the lowdown on taxicabs and public transit. Find nearby pharmacies and quick care facilities. And if the mood strikes you, nd a chapel and get hitched. Vegas2Go just wants to help make our Vegas into your Vegas.

That’s the total settlement Nevada will get from Purdue Pharmaceuticals and its owners the Sackler family, resolving litigation for their role in “creating and worsening the opioid crisis across the country.” Attorney General Aaron Ford announced that 55 attorneys general agreed to sign onto a $7.4 billion settlement with Purdue, the manufacturer of OxyContin. Nevada’s portion will be dispensed to local and state governments over 15 years to support addiction treatment, prevention and recovery.

LEGISLATURE

New heat laws on the books

Nevada will require its largest counties to plan for extreme heat and protect outdoor workers from wildfire smoke under legislation Gov. Joe Lombardo signed this month, reversing his 2023 veto after Las Vegas recorded 526 heat-related deaths and experienced its hottest summer on record in 2024.

Assembly Bill 96 will help communities withstand the intensifying impacts of extreme heat, requiring Nevada counties with populations of 100,000 people or more— Clark and Washoe—to adopt heat mitigation plans in their master plans.

These plans must include strategies such as public cooling spaces, public drinking water and shade over paved surfaces or other “cool building practices” to help lessen the e ects of extreme heat

on communities. Examples include using safer materials for playground equipment and incorporating more foliage in areas deemed heat islands, which experience higher temperatures due to a lack of shade.

Additionally, Senate Bill 260 will require employers to take additional safety measures for outdoor workers when air quality deteriorates due to wildfire smoke. The bill uses the Environmental Protection Agency’s Air Quality Index (AQI) as its measurement standard. When the AQI exceeds unhealthy levels for sensitive groups, employers must take steps to reduce worker exposure, such as schedule adjustments, providing filtered air spaces, or distributing N95 masks and respirators.

If the AQI rises above 200, signifying air that is unhealthy

for everyone, employees would be allowed to stop working if employers cannot ensure a safe environment.

“We really wanted to make it clear that extreme heat is a really important issue to community members and for four, five, six months out of the year, it is something that a lot of us— especially in Southern Nevada—feel and experience every day of our lives,” said Jackie Spicer, coalition coordinator of the Nevada Environmental Justice Coalition.

AB 96 was supported by the Nevada Environmental Justice Coalition, the UNR School of Medicine and the City of Las Vegas. Las Vegas has already been embracing the heat-mitigation e orts required by the bill.

Broadacres closes amid reported ICE raids in Vegas

Broadacres Marketplace, a 44-acre outdoor swap meet in North Las Vegas, has temporarily closed “out of an abundance of caution and concern for our community.”

In a social media post on Saturday afternoon, management said it didn’t want any of the 15,000 weekly customers, 1,000 vendors or employees to be detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

“We are heartbroken to announce this temporary closure, but we cannot in good conscience continue operations while our vendors, customers and community members are under threat,” management wrote. ICE did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether enforcement has increased in the Valley.

The Nevada Immigrant Coalition has said they have confirmed ICE activity in Southern Nevada and called on state and local leaders to speak out against “economic harm” and take “immediate action” to protect immigrant communities.

“Our communities deserve protection from family separation and guarantee that due process is upheld in every detention and deportation case,” said Rico Ocampo, co-organizing director of Make the Road Nevada.

BACKSTORY

NFPA BEAR DONATION | CLARK COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT AND LAS VEGAS FIRE & RESCUE | FIRE STATION 33 |

JUNE 18, 2025

Firefighters have many tools: Hoses. Axes. Ladders. Teddy bears. Valley firefighters received a donation of 1,000 teddy bears from the National Fire Protection Association to hand to children they meet on traumatic calls. Clark County Fire Capt. Joey Virtuoso remembered a time when he gave a little girl a bear as he explained to her that her mother had died. “You’ll see that these bears not only help in that moment and give that child a level of comfort,” he said. “They will end up keeping these bears, essentially for the rest of their life.” Firefighters don’t just work in their stations, Virtuoso added. They consider the surrounding neighborhood their home. They sleep there. They grocery shop there. They go to the coffee shops there. “We are your fire department and we are your firefighters. We want you to treat us just like your neighbors, just like you would family,” he said. Maybe these bears can help people during their worst times feel like family, too. –Wade Vandervort
